my ahsoka thoughts
OK. I am...conflicted.
Rebels is my favourite Star Wars show, hands down. I watched it as a kid before Clone Wars, so I'm deeply connected to it. So I was of course STOKED to learn that Ahsoka was basically live-action Rebels.
So when I watch it, any slight reference to Rebels gets me giddy and excited. But my excitement clouded my critical thinking slightly. No, I don't think Ahsoka is a bad show (so far), I actually have been enjoying it more than Mando s3 and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but I think some things have been missing the mark for me.
First, I'll talk about what I like. Personally, I love Sabine. I think her character motivations (especially in ep 4) make a lot of sense, cause her main goal is to find Ezra. And a little bit of a controversial take, I actually don't mind her Jedi training all that much. I think her learning how to properly use a lightsaber, especially Ezra's, makes sense for her character (the force less so).
ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT MY MAN CHOPPER. He's my favourite droid, the best droid, and he is absolutely perfect in the show. No complaints. And little Jacen Syndulla, ugh my heart. I love that there was a tiny hint that he's force-sensitive (like his daddyyyyy).
Ok so, I mentioned Sabine's force training, which I think is a mistake. Yes, I like that Ahsoka is training her like a Jedi in terms of fighting technique and morals, but it is clearly shown Sabine can't access the force, that is simply a talent people are born with, she can't make it happen. And I'm so worried they're gonna make it happen. I think it is much more meaningful for her character to be a Jedi in all things but the force, which yes, I know, is like the main thing, but with her Mandalorian background, learning to fight with a lightsaber makes sense.
Those are my only plot complaints so far, but next is acting, specifically Rosario Dawson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Flat, is all I have to say. Where is Hera's personality? Where did it go? Mary looks like Hera, sure, but I've only seen ONE moment of Rebels Hera in FOUR episodes. And honestly, I haven't really liked Rosario's depiction of Ahsoka since Mando s2. She just hasn't clicked for me. She just feels like a different character, like an AU or something. She's so different than Ahsoka in Rebels to me. Idk.
But in all honesty, I'm holding out hope for this show, ESPECIALLY after seeing how episode 4 ended. I find its weaknesses lie in its performances rather than the plot, which is refreshing for a Star Wars show.
Please let me know what yall think, I'm really interested! Spoilers are allowed ;)
