Chapter 2

Journal Entry 2

About a week ago, I got a book called 'Wallflower' from Lindsey, which I absolutely loved. It explained perfectly the feelings of being a wallflower and the challenges we have to face. I consider myself a wallflower. The literal definition of one is "someone who has no one to dance with or feels shy, awkward, or is excluded at parties." I don't know if I like this definition so much. In the book, they explain a wallflower as more of someone faded in the background and not noticed as much. The author, Abby Timber, also referred us to have a "social disease". Being a wallflower isn't as bad as it sounds, we can be pretty interesting if only people gave us a chance. Gave us some love.

I told my mom I was going out to the library and then I left stealthily. I couldn't wait to talk about this novel to Lindsey. She knew I would love it, and she's right. I've probably read it 2-3 times this past week.

When I arrive the short cut, I check my surroundings to make sure no one is watching and then I dive into the hole in the fence. I'm crawling through the small path when I get pushed back. I bumped into something, or by the sound of it, someone.

"Hey, what's your problem?" a boys asks in a revolting tone.

I huff and sit up, rubbing a small scrape that had appeared on my elbow. "I'm climbing through my passage way to arrive at the library. How did you know about this place?" I ask skeptically.

"Wait, your saying that this is your passage way when I created it," the boy said with an enraged expression in his eyes.

I stare up at him with a dismayed face. "You made this?"

"Yup,and it's my territory so I would greatly appreciate if you wouldn't come through here," he said, his voice tinged with revolt.

I suddenly get silent, feeling a bit insecure in his presence. It's a downside of being a wallflower. "I-I'm sorry. It's just- this is the fastest way to the library. I really need this short cut."

"Well that's too bad. If you would excuse me, I want to go through my passage way." He hastily leaves the way I was trying to go through. I try and ignore what he said so that I could walk through peacefully, but I can't handle the feeling going through me that this is his territory, and I'm trespassing.

I walk through anyways and arrive the huge doors to the library. I brush off all the dust and twigs from my jeans and I walk in to see Lindsey working at the front desk.

"Hi Linds." I say, still feeling perplexed from the boy before.

"Oh, hi Miss Cat. Back so soon?" She asks with a warm smile.

"Yup,I couldn't stop reading this book. It's now my very favorite." I say, trying to sound intimate.

My comment made Lindsey grin. "Well, I'm very happy to hear that. I don't have another book picked out for you yet, so would you be okay to wait?"

"Oh I didn't come here for a new book. I came to talk to you about this one," I say, gesturing to 'Wallflower'.

"Oh how wonderful! It's one of my favorites too. What would you like to talk about with it?" she asks as she stands up and leads me to a comfortable arm chair in the sitting area.

"What was your favorite line in the book? I kinda liked the line 'Every part of life is either up or down. Choose to jump high or sink low.' But I liked of other ones," I state, welcoming the familiar chair.

She looks at me, her eyes deep with thought. "My favorite is 'We are all part of a cherry tree. Some choose to be cherries, the most popular and good looking. Some choose to be the trunk and branches, the supporters. And others choose to be the leaves, the ones who don't get paid attention to as much but are the most interesting and beautiful if they were noticed.'"

My mouth makes a small 'O' shape as I remember the familiar line, reciting it in my head a few times before I answer. "I'm a leaf," I said, sounding thoughtful.

Lindsey just takes a quick look at me before a smile creeps up her face. "You and I both, sweetie."
