Chapter 6 - Sisters
Elizabeth and Katie arrive at Lucinda's within minutes after departing from the ranch. After Elizabeth shifts to Park and kills the engine, she can't stop herself from crying when she looks over to see Katie's knees curled up into her chest sobbing.
"It will be okay, sweetheart. Grandma isn't suffering anymore. At least you got to meet her."
With a sniffle and her head dipping over her arms, Katie says nothing but continues to whimper. It isn't until Lucinda comes out to the car and opens the door that Kaitlin pulls her head up.
"Hey, hey, now little one, it's okay. Come on inside, and let's get you something to help calm you down." Lucinda says, leaving her older sister a moment to herself.
The aunt-niece duo makes their way through the front room foyer that leads through the dean and into the kitchen, where Katie is given a slice of devil's food chocolate cake smothered in chocolate icing and a tall glass of ice-cold milk.
"This should help, I know, I know, you're watching that girly figure and all, but this isn't your everyday kind of guilt food. It'll help, trust me, always helped your mom when she was sad." Lucinda says with a piece of cake on a plate followed by a cold glass of milk.
What Lucinda did by taking Katie inside allows Elizabeth to break down. She takes a few minutes to cry and calls home when she regains her composure.
"Hey, mom, sup?" Michael Jr. answers.
"I uh, it's that..." she mutters, trying to find the words.
"Everything okay, mom? You don't sound like yourself."
In a single breath, Elizabeth finally calms herself to form a sentence.
"Yes, I mean no, your grandma passed away, and since you're free, I'd appreciate it if you came out here and paid your respects and meet my side of the family."
"Not possible, mother of mine! I already Googled you and your hometown, and yeah, I ain't about to ruin my brand-new car for some country bumpkin." Michael Jr. says in a snotty way.
His comment takes the wind out of Elizabeth's sails. She sits there stunned and ready to reach through the phone to beat her son's insensitive ass.
"You ungrateful little brat! I have been cussed out, talked down to, treated worse than a dog, and had a gun pulled on me since I've been here. I have tolerated your smug, spoiled, entitled attitude for a while, and I've dealt with your limp dick father cheating on me. Now, get in your damn car, put it in gear, and get your ass here, or so help me."
By the time she pauses, a beeping comes from her phone.
"That little brat hung up on me!" Elizabeth shouts with her cheeks turning red.
Fuming at how her only son treated her, Elizabeth loses her cool by beating her fist into her steering wheel. The beating doesn't come to an end until Logan walks out, tapping on her window.
"Whatever it is, the steering wheel didn't do it. I understand that you're hurtin', and there's nothing wrong with letting that anger out. Let me help though, get out and follow me." Logan states standing there not looking anything like Kevin described.
Logan appears cut but not thick in muscle mass in a polo shirt and faded Arizona jeans. Elizabeth is stunned to see her sister picked a country-toned but not a traditional rodeo or cowboy-like guy.
While he strolls out to the barn, Elizabeth drags herself from the SUV and follows several feet behind. Before she's through the barn doors, she hears him grunt and groans with a pounding-like noise from the far side within the big wooden structure.
The sight of Logan with his shirt off striking the punching bag takes Elizabeth by surprise. He continues to grunt with every blow, with the bag swaying.
"C'mon over and put on the gloves. Sis, this will help with everything that you have stored up inside. Just let it out. It's just us out here. Lucy has Katie in the kitchen helping her. Let me help you, please. I know how it feels, I have a cousin who my family shoved out the door, and it fucked his life up until he met a wonderful woman. Now they have a great life. All because someone showed they cared, and you're my big sister-in-law. So, this is me helping you." Logan explains, taking a break to show her photos of his cousin Josh and cousin-in-law Nikki's explaining their story.
After scrolling through the photos on Logan's iPhone, Elizabeth picks up the boxing gloves and begins to hit the bag in a girly way.
"C'mon! Get mad, get angry, get pissed, get furious, get freaking livid, and hit that damn thing!" Logan yells, trying to get Elizabeth amped up.
Her first memory that sends Elizabeth into the first stage of rage is when she pictures her husband kissing a girl out in public one night without him knowing she was there.
Then Elizabeth hauls off, slamming her left hand into the bag. Dust lightly flies from the bag, and Logan gives her a bit of praise.
"That a girl, give that bag hell!"
Not even two seconds later, she begins to scream and call out memories with each blow.
"This is for cheating on me!" Elizabeth strikes the bag again.
"You lying two-faced dickhead, this is for when you called me lazy for not sucking your dick!" Elizabeth screams.
"Ugh, Katie, this is for you sneaking your brother's best friend into your room having unprotected sex!" She scolds at the bag seeing the images return in her mind.
Logan remains silent and watches while she unloads every bit of pent-up rage into the bag. He pulls her away for a moment to check on her wrists.
Gently Logan tugs on the gloves and exposes some red glowing knuckles. He can tell there's not going to be any abrasions.
"Wow, no bruising, impressive if I can say that. Listen, I know everything's in flux, but this is just between us if you need anything handled. If you ever need anything, my cousin and his friends are a phone call away. For real, we're family, and where I come from, family sticks through thick and thin." Logan says to Elizabeth, trying to build a bridge of trust.
Elizabeth stands there with her head held low and her shoulders hunched up. Tears fall like rain inside the musty, horse-filled barn. Logan stands there with his hands resting on her shoulders for comfort without invading her space.
Inside the house, Katie and her aunt sit on the couch. Lucinda allows Katie to rest her head on her shoulder. They can't form any words, but their grief has too strong of a grip over them at the moment.
Shortly after helping Elizabeth work off some of her issues out in the barn, Logan returns inside, where he finds Lucinda and Katie still resting on the couch.
"Aunt Lucy, mind if I stay here tonight?"
"Child, you need not ask that because you are always welcomed here. You and your mom both."
Lucinda leans over, squeezing her niece, and gets up to talk to her sister. Once Lucinda is outside, she heads over to the barn, where she finds her sister talking to one of the horses.
"You're a very pretty girl. You remind me of my Jazz-Jazz. So pretty with her brown and white painted colored and oh your mane is so healthy."
Elizabeth leans over, giving a hug to the horse before Lucinda interrupts.
"That's exactly why I got her from the rodeo. She reminded me of you, and well, I had to have a part of my big sis at home with me."
"Thank you," Elizabeth mutters, wiping her eyes.
"Mom always wanted you to come home, and she got to see you at least and little miss Katie."
Elizabeth stands there and lets her memories run freely of her mom. They bring a smile to her face as she feels Lucinda's arm around her shoulders.
"C'mon inside, and we'll figure out something to eat. You're staying with us tonight, by the way. You can take the guest room, and Katie can sleep in the office on the futon."
Without arguing, Elizabeth nods her head.
"Care to help me go pack up our stuff from the hotel? I planned on leaving tomorrow, but now I guess it'll be after the funeral."
All Lucinda manages to do is wave to her sister as she walks out of the barn and over to her pickup truck to get going. It doesn't take them long to pack up and check out from the only hotel in the area.
"Hey, Wade's pizza is around the corner. Let's pick up a couple of pies and maybe a bottle of wine from Daniel's General Store." Lucinda suggests with an ulterior motive.
"I'll get the food, and you get the wine. It'll be back by the pharmacy. Barefoot is nice, but Norton Valley makes the best Sauvignon Blanc that comes into town." Lucinda continues trying to hide the smile on her face.
By the time they pull up to the pizzeria, Lucinda heads inside to place the order while Elizabeth strolls over to the general store. While she's heading for the wine section, there's a very familiar voice from the other side of the aisle. All she can do is duck for cover and wait for a minute as the coast clears and quickly snags two bottles of wine without looking at the brand.
"That bitch, I'm going to strangle her!" Elizabeth whispers on her way out of the store.
Elizabeth joins her sister waiting on the pizzas after dropping the wine off inside the truck.
"You hussy, you knew he was working and wanted a rendezvous between us. You sneaky bitch!" Elizabeth teases, playing out several scenarios in her mind.
"That grin on your face says it all too, doesn't it," Lucinda says, smiling at her sister.
"That was low; even for you, that was low and wrong!" Elizabeth scolds, unable to break the smile.
They lean into each other with shoulder bumps giggling as they sway back and forth.
"BRADSHAW, you're up!" The server announces with Lucinda taking the food.
Nothing else is said on the way back to the house. The pain is diverted at last, and together they lift the mood. Kevin arrives before the food gets too cold, and for the first time in years, Elizabeth is surrounded by family with a movie playing. She nearly feels at home.
The next day after the family gets together, Elizabeth receives a call that she sends to voicemail.
"Hi, Doctor Phillips, it's Gia. Listen, your patients want to send you their best wishes and want you back soon. They're, uh, not enjoying your temporary replacement, and well, it's been a mess. So, call me back, and I hope you're doing okay. Miss ya girl, bye!"
It seems as if time has stood still at that moment. In a way, Elizabeth wants to leave her life in California behind but realizes her responsibilities. Although she considers it for a quick split-second, another call comes in that she answers.
"Hello"
"Dr. Phillips, hello, how are you doing this morning?" Nick asks with a hint of frustration in his voice.
"I'm doing better, the funeral is in a few days, and once I'm home, I'll be ready to get back to work. Gia called a little bit ago, is everything alright?"
He takes his time planning out his words with an underhanded deed up his sleeve.
"Ah yes, just you know, leaving out of nowhere, and your patients thought I had finally bought you out. No worries though, everything and everyone has adjusted. They send you their best wishes. I just wanted to call and well see how you were doing and how your mother was feeling. I guess you answered that, and I am so sorry about your loss."
"Thank you, Nick. It was great to see her before she died. Anyway, I need to get moving and finish up arrangements and help get everything paid and finalized. Bye."
Elizabeth hangs up her phone but doesn't realize her sister has been listening to the conversation.
"He sounds like a real jackass," Lucinda comments and startles her sister.
"Nick is an asshole for sure, but he did me a huge favor by filling in while I'm here. I have one of the best reputations in all of Anaheim. I make a damn good living too. If it weren't for Michael and his irresponsible ways, I'd be golden."
Lucinda doesn't hold back her opinion of her sister's spouse.
"I hate him, always have, and that smug smile of his just rubs me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, I love Katie, and she's such a sweetheart. Though Michael needs an ass-kicking, I'll be more than happy to come back to California and do it for you. I love you, sissy, and you deserve so much better."
"I love you too, Lucy, and you've always been welcomed in my home. Michael is usually away on business. I have to be honest; it would be nice to have company occasionally." Elizabeth explains with a hefty sigh.
"Tell you what, let me get home and get settled, and then you and Logan come out and enjoy the beaches and shopping and cuisines of Southern Cali. You'll love it!" Elizabeth says with some excitement to her voice.
Katie comes out of nowhere and leaps onto the bed.
"Oh, Aunt Lucy, you'll love it, I promise! I can let you see my school and watch me at cheerleading practice. Please say you'll come, please, please, please!"
Lucinda sees that she doesn't stand a chance and agrees to come along.
"How could I tell this precious face no, and Ellie, I have to see the big city doctor in action. Why wait? After everything is said and done, we'll follow you home and spend a few days crashing on your couch per se."
Katie squeals, and Elizabeth smiles, but in the pit of her stomach, things feel off. She returns to picking out her clothes for the day.
Once they're ready to head down to the funeral home, they arrive to see Mr. Reed's truck already there. It's a bit of a surprise to see him off the ranch when all he's ever shown is how much he works to keep ahead of any issues that may arise.
"Weird seeing daddy's truck here. He avoids things like this." Lucinda states, walking by the tailgate.
They all head inside and see things are about to wrap up. Soon Frank and Kevin walk out of the office.
"Hey Ellie, Lucy, you're a little late," Kevin says, exchanging hugs with his sisters.
"Typical of these two, always late or running off to have a better life." Mr. Reed grumbles, marching past them on his way to the truck.
"He's in a mood, ain't he?" Lucinda asks with a snarling glare at the back of her father's head.
"Dad's fine. He just paid for everything and not willing to admit that he misses mom." Kevin explains, then sighs.
"Guess we're not needed then; so, when is everything?" Elizabeth questions.
"Her viewing is tomorrow evening, and then the funeral is just family only, the morning after."
Elizabeth feels conflicted, sad to say goodbye to everyone but glad in a way to get back to her life and work. She walks out with her siblings. Kevin hitches a ride with Elizabeth and Katie as they all take time to visit old places from their childhood and try to make the best of the time they have left together before the family splits apart.
