Chapter 12 - Country Heritage

Days after the final court hearing, Elizabeth and Kaitlin finally arrive at Lucinda's home once more. Crushed pride mixed with a devastating glare in Elizabeth's eyes doesn't even begin to touch the shattered and scattered pieces of her heart. Everything she had known since becoming a doctor is gone because of one man's greed.

"Hey babe, your sister is here," Logan calls out from the door on his way to work.

Lucinda walks out with him to greet the two weary travelers as she says nothing at first when she wraps her arms around Elizabeth. Logan, though goes over to Kaitlin to discuss what happened to her.

"Hey kiddo, heard you got attacked inside of a courthouse. Are you okay?"

"Yes, Uncle Logan, I'm fine. Luckily Uncle Kevin came to my rescue. He didn't touch me or hurt me this time, I promise." She whispers, giving him a warm embrace.

"As long as you're okay is all that matters. If I had been there, I would have given him a southern-style beating like his momma should've done." He adds, trying to act like a tough guy.

His response has Kaitlin chuckle lightly. Once they release from the hug, they see Lucinda and Elizabeth stroll towards the house.

"Uncle Logan, would you care if I go with you today? I've never seen mom like this, and I don't wanna hang around here today."

He gingerly wraps his arm around her shoulders.

"I don't mind, and I'll go clear it with your mother. Stay here and get anything you need; I'll be right back." He declares, making his way to the house.

When the door creaks open, Logan stands in the doorway.

"Hey um, if uh, maybe, yeah, okay..." He sputters at first, "Do you mind if I take Katie with me to a few appointments? I can tell some much-needed sister-time is required, and she feels out of place right now."

"Yeah, she could use some time away from me," Elizabeth says, blowing her nose into a handkerchief.

Without a single word, Lucinda motions to her husband to get lost and does so when he notices her hand waving. He returns to Kaitlin and waves to get into the truck.

Once they're buckled up, the truck roars to life, and in no time, they're off to Logan's first appointment of the day.

"So, ready to see some real rodeo horses?" He asks while his eyes remain locked on the road.

"Like seriously?" Kaitlin bursts out with excitement, "Hell yes, I am!"

Logan snickers under his breath and continues his way out to the training ranch.

"Maybe once we get finished there, we'll make the drive to Loveland and grab some lunch over at Applebee's or maybe the Jack in the Box on Main Street," Logan suggests feeling his stomach ready for something to eat.

"I've never had Jack in the Box before; we rarely ever had real fast food."

Her statement doesn't surprise Logan at all. He again snickers under his breath. The rest of the way to the horse ranch, they listen to the radio.

By the time they arrive, Kaitlin is in awe at the sight of trainers working with horses and riders alike.

"Oh! How cool would it be to get to ride a horse every day!" She bursts out with a new glow in her eyes.

"Tell you what, I'm close friends with the owners. Once I get finished with the typical rounds of checkups and immunizations, I'll see if I can get you on a beginners training horse." Logan mentions keeping his eyes looking forward.

"No way!"

"Like, yes, way!" he taunts, flipping his wrist at her.

"You're so totally cool!" Kaitlin admits staring at her uncle.

"I know, I know, I'm that cool hip uncle-like guy who has favors owed."

Kaitlin scoffs at his light-hearted and playful tone. She's anxious to get on a horse.

It takes some time for Logan to complete his tasks. Kaitlin watches and listens as Logan goes through each examination of each colt. More than a half dozen were born, and almost the same number is retiring from competitions to training horses.

"Alright, Mr. Tackett, that should do the trick. I'll turn in these results to the rodeo and racing commissions office, and you should be set to register these babies." Logan says, discarding his gloves and the syringe into the proper disposal containers.

"Hey, who is this amazing young and attentive beauty with you?" Mr. Tackett teases, giving a wink over to Kaitlin.

"Danny boy, this is my niece. Meet miss Kaitlin Phillips. She's a true-blue Californian and a bright young woman. She's also interested in getting her first ride on one of your training horses. That's if you wouldn't mind her having a tryout."

All Kaitlin can do is stand there and blush, playing the giddy card to near perfection.

"I don't see the harm in that. Have Lindsey get her set up, and let's take a gander at what she has." He replies before taking out his phone to text the lead trainer.

Within a few minutes, a tall long dark-haired woman arrives. She's tan and thin, which leaves Kaitlin stunned at her appearance. She was expecting a tomboy-style trainer, not a primp and proper cowgirl.

"Hello, I'm Lindsey, and I'll be your assessment trainer. I take it you're Kaitlin; well, aren't you a sight of young beauty! Just like your momma." She says in her introduction.

"Yup, that's me!" Kaitlin mutters, feeling a bit nervous.

Lindsey extends her hand out, taking Kaitlin's hand to guide her to the training assessment area. That gives Logan and Mr. Tackett time to enjoy a chance to sit and chat.

"So, Logan, why haven't you brought your niece out here sooner? I mean, you know most of these riders begin when they're maybe six, seven, and eight at the latest, but she's what maybe fourteen, fifteen?"

"Okay, she's almost 16, but the long story made short, her mother grew up here, and you remember Elizabeth Reed; well, Katie is her only daughter. You know the story about Ellie being disowned by her father, and well, she just got divorced. They're staying with Lucy and me for the moment."

Mr. Tackett's expression says it all when it all rushes through his body. His eyes expand to the size of an owl, and his mouth nearly scrapes the table.

"I could've sworn she looked familiar!" He blurts out when the puzzle pieces connect.

"If she's anything like her momma, then she's going to be a natural on a horse! I mean, I remember the couple of shows her mom did in the jumping competitions, and just wow, I can still see the shows like they just happened." Mr. Tackett says to Logan, recalling his younger days when he learned how to run the ranch from his father.

While Mr. Tackett continues with some old stories, Lindsey is busy on the other end of the ranch testing Kaitlin's skills.

"Geez, I suck!" Kaitlin scolds herself when she nearly falls off after attempting the jumps.

"You don't have your mother's skill for this, but I have one more track for you to try. You have a great firm grip on the reigns. Maybe your skillset should be better tested for barrel racing." Lindsey recommends leading the horse over to the barrel area.

Lindsey misses the look of dread on her trainee's face. The sense of doubt tangles Kaitlin's mind. Before she realizes it, Lindsey slaps the horse on the ass, sending them down towards the first barrel.

"To turn pull on the right reign and lean slightly into the turn for better support!" Lindsey shouts, watching the duo soar across the dusty earth.

"That's it! Now pull on the opposite side and continue the pull. Remember to lean to move toward the next barrel. You're doing awesome!" Lindsey calls out orders teaching Kaitlin on the fly.

The sounds of Kaitlin's voice crying out in exhilaration echoes throughout the air, with other ranch hands coming over to observe. They're all stunned to see a teenager with zero experience follow instructions and barrel race like she's done it for years. They all begin to cheer and clap Kaitlin and Gunner.

"She's a true natural at this!" Lindsey explains over to Pablo as they clap together before Lindsey calls out for Kaitlin to halt.

"Whoa! Okay, you two, that's enough!" Lindsey cries out, coughing as the dust in the air falls over her.

The commotion carries out to Logan and Mr. Tackett. They pull themselves up from the table to travel back just to see Kaitlin finish up her trial run on the barrel race.

"If I ain't a monkey's uncle; she ain't a jumper, she's a damn talented barrel racer." Mr. Tackett mentions with the employees gathered to watch.

"Doesn't surprise me in the least. Like I said, if Kaitlin's anything like Elizabeth, she'll be your next champion. She's like my cousin Josh, raw talent and rage buried deep within that propels natural talents," Logan says.

Mr. Tackett shrugs his shoulders, giving Logan the 'I told you so' without using words. He stands there staring at the smile plastered on Kaitlin's face with a glow of happiness emanating from her body.

"You got a deal; she can train, and I'll cut you a deal since you're our vet if she can bring in a couple of solid wins. Then maybe I could pick up that new sponsorship with Wrangler Jeans at last." Mr. Tackett admits feeling some sense of hope.

Logan takes a few steps over, patting Mr. Tackett on the back.

"Anything for that elusive brand, eh?" He teases at first with a chuckle to his voice.

"We all can't be hippie-dippy Arizona brand-wearing city boys like you, you know!" Mr. Tackett teases back with a playful nudge.

Lindsey comes out to guide Kaitlin and Gunner back to the stall. They can all still hear Kaitlin giggling with joy. After she climbs off Gunner and the trembling comes to an end, she struts up in front of Gunner, talking to him.

"Thank you, thank you for being a good horsey. I felt right at home riding you, and yes, you are my first horse. You're gorgeous, and I will see you again like really soon, I promise, boy!"

Lindsey stands at the corner of the stall listening closely to Kaitlin speak to Gunner.

"He's a great trainer for sure youngin', but he's a retired racer. I wish you could have seen him a few years back. He was so graceful with me; yes, he is my horse, but Gunner's gotten too old for the racing standards, but he's a great horse." Lindsey chimes in, staring at her old companion.

Given that Kaitlin is out having the time of her life. She's able to escape the reality of what's occurred between her parents. Back at Lucinda's, Elizabeth sits with her sister writhing in her agony.

"I still can't believe I nearly lost everything." Elizabeth sobs with her sister taking her hand.

"All part of God's plan, sis. I know it sucks, and you can't see the sun rising over the bastard keeping you locked down and hurting, but things will get better. Dr. Fisher is giving you time to get adjusted and settled in." Lucinda says to her sister.

"Yeah, I'm going to need it. I'll stop by when I head out with Kaitlin to find us an apartment. Starting over sucks, and I can't believe that we have only the clothes on our backs. I hate that man, but at least I have my daughter. I need to find a way for M.J. to get out here. I need both my kids with me."

Lucinda sits there thinking about who all she could turn to for help. She's never seen her sister so broken up, and with every recent event hardship taking its toll, Lucinda can't understand how Elizabeth isn't completely left in shambles.

"Take your time Ellie. There's no sense to rush into anything. I mean, you got Alimony and child support coming in soon, right?"

Elizabeth scoffs and responds.

"That son of a bitch got out of all that. The judge was a buddy, and Michael's done so much in keeping the courthouse updated with security and internet security equipment that he owns the favors of anyone there. I did get most of the money he got from selling my practice, but that's only six hundred thousand."

"Hey, if anything that could help you get a house rather than an apartment!" Lucinda lets out in excitement.

All Elizabeth can do is look down at the table.

"I need that to help buy into a practice or take one over," Elizabeth admits feeling deflated from her divorce.

There's an unexpected knock on the front door, and before either of them makes it from the table, the front door opens with Mr. Reed walking through the house. Soon he's spotted coming down the hallway with his typical expression etched into his face.

"Heard about what happened." Mr. Reed says softly while taking a seat with his eyes locked on his oldest daughter.

"Go ahead, daddy, let me have it, give me the 'I told you so Elizabeth' speech."

"Lucinda, give us a few minutes, please." He asks.

Frank's request is granted, and before Elizabeth can protest, Lucinda is gone from the kitchen and down into the living room.

"Daddy before..." She's cut off when he places his hand over her mouth.

"It's okay, yes I was angry before, and when I lost your mother, I felt a part of me die with her. Now, I ain't sittin' here saying that I've forgiven you for all you have done because I'm not. However, you have a wonderful little girl, and I still have yet to meet my grandson. I want to meet him and soon, but as for you, your momma wouldn't want us fussin' at each other." Mr. Reed begins and pauses when he runs short of breath.

After a couple of extended deep breaths, Mr. Reed picks up where he left off.

"I love you, little girl. I've always been proud to say you became a doctor. I wanted more for you, but you chose your path. I can respect that, and that dumb idiot you had for a husband let the best thing in the world go. You're better off, but he won't be, and if I ever see that motherfucker, I'll blow his goddamned nut sack off for you."

He pauses again before he finishes.

"Now, I heard about what happened with Katie from your brother. I'm half tempted to go hunt that sum bitch down and place a bullet between his damn eyes myself. I'm an old man, and I got more days behind me than I do ahead of me. I'll go to Hell to protect my kids, and yes, that includes you too. I love you, kid, and I'm glad you're home, even if you're not."

Elizabeth reaches out, pulling her father in for a hug.

"I'm so sorry, daddy; I'm sorry mom's gone. I'm sorry I never came home sooner to visit. I've missed you so much. I love you!" She says, breaking down with tears streaming down her face.

Mr. Reed puts his arms around his daughter in hopes of helping her heal and get her life back on track in time. Lucinda stands in the hallway observing as her father finally cracked his hard shell to bring his family back together. She can't help but smile with wiping away a tear or two and feel a bit of the storm that's been over the family lift a little as things can't go anywhere but up from here.
