Chapter 10 - All Hell Breaks Loose

Michael Jr. leaves his mother waiting at the hotel. He's decided to be the one to confront his father. The Camaro fires to life to race home, believing he's finally doing the right thing.

As he pulls into the driveway, he sees the B.M.W. still there. After a deep breath, Michael Jr. charges into the house and finds his father coming from the bedroom with a girl on each arm.

"Hey, son, just in time. Do you want one of these lovely ladies?" Michael Sr. says, looking over to the redhead.

"Oh, he's pretty cute! He looks exactly like a younger you!" She points out, taking her leave reaching out to take hold of Michael Jr.

"He's named Michael Jr. for a reason, you know. M.J., go have fun, and uh, we'll not tell your mother about this. Consider her a gift for it being, oh, I don't know, a sunny day."

Michael Jr. marches up to his father without hesitation.

"I have my girl, so just take them home, dad." He says, trying not to cause a scene.

Michael Sr. nods and helps the two ladies out to the car. Soon they're gone, and Michael Jr. waits for his father to return.

Back at the hotel, Elizabeth receives a call.

"Hello"

"Hey sis, listen, I'm at the airport, and I'll be in town shortly. I uh took a few days that dad told me to take and come check-up on you." Kevin admits without wasting time.

"ATTENTION ALL PASSENGERS! Southwest Airlines is now boarding for Los Angeles International Airport. Please have your ticket and carry-on ready, and thank you for choosing Southwest Airlines." The announcement states as it carries through the phone.

"I'll see y'all soon; love ya bye!" Kevin says, ending the call.

Elizabeth is stunned that her brother is already coming to visit. She's put off even more, when their father suggested that Kevin come to visit to make sure Elizabeth and the kids are okay. She keeps a close eye on her phone until she can't handle it any longer.

"Fuck it!" She says, rushing down to get Katie.

As the elevator door opens, Elizabeth bumps into Kaitlin without Wally escorting her back to the room.

"Oh, hey, sorry, mom." She says in a depressed kind of voice.

"It's okay, and come with me; your uncle Kevin is coming to visit for a few days."

"Do what?" Kaitlin manages to say while her mother drags her to the SUV.

Before she can tell her mom anything else, Kaitlin is in her seat with the seatbelt fastened. Elizabeth slides into the driver's seat and notices something's off.

"What did he do?" Elizabeth asks.

"He broke up with me; Wally dumped her for Sherry Martel. She put out more than I did, and he dumped me." She mentions then sniffles.

"That son of a bitch! I'll beat his ass for using you and ditching you!" Elizabeth yells, smashing her hand into the center console.

Kaitlin draws up into the seat with her knees folded as her heart cracks even more. She stays that way the entire forty-minute drive to LAX. They find an easy spot to park and wait patiently with the car idling with the air condition blowing.

They both watch as planes land and take off from the runways. They guess which one Kevin is in with every plane that lands. It's a way for a distraction from the drama in their lives, and soon the phone call comes from Kevin.

"Hey bubby, have you landed yet?" Elizabeth questions when she quickly answers the phone.

"Yeah, I have my bag, and I'm about to walk outside. Do I need a rental car or..."?

"We're here already. I'll pick you up and uh explain a few things on the way back."

Without wasting time, Elizabeth backs out of her space spot, driving up alongside the curb. Kevin climbs into the Nissan and buckles his seatbelt, and begins with some small talk.

"So this is California, huh? It doesn't seem that impressive to me, or at least flying over it didn't look special.

Kaitlin sniffles and wipes her nose with a tissue from the center console.

"You haven't been into L.A. or Hollywood yet, Uncle Kevin."

"You okay, sweetie? Something happen?"

"Her boyfriend broke up with her for another girl, and he did it while they were at the pool. Spineless little ass clown." Elizabeth mentions so Kaitlin doesn't upset herself all over again.

"His loss, our Katie girl is one of a kind. If someone weren't good enough, it would be him Kit-Kat, okay? You can do better, you're young, smart, brilliant, in fact, and I bet you could outshine your mom one day."

"Thanks, Uncle Kevin, that means a lot to me."

His comments put a smile on her face, but Kaitlin remains with her knees folded into her chest.

Before they can drive back towards the hotel, a call comes through the Bluetooth connection to Elizabeth's phone.

"Hey Gia, what's up?"

"Elizabeth, uh, I mean Dr. Phillips, girl, you best get here and fast! Something ain't right, and I think that there is something bad in the air."

Elizabeth stops her from rambling more.

"Wait...Gia...STOP!" She yells.

"Sorry"

"Why do you think something is wrong?"

Gia can be heard sucking in a long breath to explain.

"That Nick guy, well, he's been on his phone with his lawyer almost all day, and then he bursts out of your office and says to lock up and cancel all the rest of today's appointments. And, I might have eavesdropped and heard him mention about getting to the bank with him and um." She pauses before she finishes her statement, "Your husband, so I think they're about to fuck you up the ass, Dr. Phillips. I hate being that blunt girl, but something ain't adding up."

On instinct alone, Elizabeth knows exactly where to go. She diverts off the interstate heading straight for the bank where she took out the loan to start her practice. She arrives and notices the BMW parked in the front of the building. That's when Elizabeth takes off like a bat out of hell.

Barging through the bank's door, she turns and runs down the hall into the loan department, where she sees Nick, Michael, two lawyers, along with the loan officer all shaking hands and a document packet in the loan officer's hands.

"That son of a bitch!" She growls, marching into the office.

"I know you did not just sign over MY practice!" Elizabeth screams, nearly shattering the glass door after it slams.

Michael and Nick are all smiles with their lawyers handling their dirty work for the sinister scheme.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but you mean your shared practice. The original loan has both you and Mr. Phillips as co-owners, or rather, partners, and since you were not here to work out the deal, he came in on your behalf. The deal is signed, sealed, and delivered, and negotiations are over. Good day, and enjoy the money." The short, dark-haired lawyer explains in his high-pitched voice.

"Listen here, 'stumpy' McShort Pants, I own that practice, and it is mine! I've owned it for years, and I've built up the clientele and busted MY ass off to earn the contract with the hockey team. It's been my blood, sweat, and tears poured into making it the million-dollar business it's about to become!" Elizabeth brawls out, screaming nearly at the top of her lungs.

Michael and Nick both cross their arms and make another huge announcement.

"That money is gone already. I am paying other debts we owe, but you, my dear, have the debt of everything else. My lawyer has been busy working up deals with creditors and with the bank." Michael admits with a wicked smile across his face.

"You son of a bitch!" She says, struggling not to strike her husband.

"By the way, you have until Friday to have your stuff out of my house. I filed for divorce while you were gone, and oh, the kids are staying with me since I can support them. You're broke, just like when you met me. Have a nice life, sweetheart." Michael Sr. counters as that sink Elizabeth's world even further.

Suddenly stuck in a state of shock, Elizabeth stands there, barely able to breathe. In the swoop of a pen, her world didn't just crash and burn, but a nuclear bomb destroyed everything in sight. She stands there feeling the fallout over her body with nothing left but a dark sky and the embers of hate glowing and growing in her soul.

Without a peep, Elizabeth turns and walks out of the office. She strolls up to the teller, checking her balance in the shared checking account and business accounts.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but you have maybe a hundred dollars left combined in both, but wait, wait one second. Your joint business account has over six hundred thousand. Would you like to transfer anything to your single account?" The teller asks, winking to Elizabeth.

It instantly dawns on her that two can play the game. Swiping away a few tears, she makes sure to put a couple of screws against her husband.

"Yes, transfer it all from my joint accounts and close them, please. I know there's also a business account with my husband. I want to transfer those funds and close that account as well, please. That just leaves my single account." She states, returning the wink.

"As you wish, ma'am, just need an electronic signature to verify, and then it can be processed." The female teller indicates mouthing to use her husband's name.

"Will do, and thank you; you've been most kind today," Elizabeth says after a sniffle and a handshake.

With only a quick glance back at the office, Elizabeth rushes back out to her car and doesn't say anything as she speeds back to the house. It's not until after that she slams her SUV in Park that she gives direct orders to Kaitlin.

"Katie, grab all you can and throw it in the back. Get what you need the most, sweetheart. Don't ask questions; just get what you can, and we need to rush. Kevin, please help her out!"

"Ellie, what's wrong?" He asks, seeing panic in her eyes.

"Just help her please, I did some things that are going to get me killed probably. Hurry up, and let's get out of here!"

She doesn't waste time escaping from her vehicle. Kaitlin and Kevin don't waste time running inside packing up things into the Nissan. They're just about finished with most of Kaitlin's clothes when the BMW comes flying low into the driveway. It comes to a halt, with the tires leaving skid marks about ten feet long.

"Where the fuck is that slut!" Michael yells, getting into Kaitlin's face.

From the window, Michael Jr. sees Kaitlin trying to back away, where he watches his father grab her by the wrist. Afraid for her safety, he charges outside, hitting their father with a full-fledged tackle sending him tumbling.

"You're not touching her again!" He shouts, standing over his father.

Without a word, Michael Sr. gets to his feet and shoves his son back. Once Michael Jr. gets into another stance, he's met with a left jab followed by an intense uppercut ending with a solid front kick that puts him on his ass. He sits there stunned at first, but his blood boils for round two.

Just as moments earlier, Michael makes short work of M.J. flying off the handle. A few more jabs to the face and a shoulder throw that plants M.J. on his side, leaving him breathless. Michael maintains an armbar with enough pressure that he's about to snap his son's arm in half. It's stopped when Michael's head is met with a left hook from Kevin.

M.J. gets to his feet, screaming in agony, clutching his arm. Kevin picks Michael up, then slams him onto the concrete, gets on top of Michael, and leans forward using his weight, transferring through his arm and hand choking Michael.

"Let him up!" Elizabeth screams, standing a few feet from her brother and husband.

"He may be an ass, but I don't need you going to prison. Please, Kevin, let him up!" She repeats, trying not to intervene.

Kaitlin stands there hugging her mother, afraid for her life. M.J. continues to hold his arm as it throbs in pain. Kevin slowly releases his grip with a warning to his brother-in-law.

"Once I get up, you come at any of us, including my niece or nephew; I'll kill you, and you know I can. Listen here, city boy; you don't fuck with my sister and her kids. I don't know what's gone on, but you need to get your shit and leave for a few days."

That's when Michael lays down the law.

"Fuck you, hill jack! This house is mine, and those kids are mine! That damn slut took my money and closed my accounts. I want my money back, and I want it back now!"

Elizabeth reveals how she outsmarted her dumbass husband.

"You mean OUR accounts, you ass hat. Also, you will not take custody of my children! They're over the age to choose who they wanna be with, and you're on the losing end of that."

That's when Michael unveils one final ace up his sleeve.

"That may be true for Katie bug, but oh, you forget, that unwanted little bastard can't leave. Oh, I'll send you back to Colorado, but it'll be without Michael Jr. His ass belongs to me, and until he's off probation, he stays here. You best get ready for one hell of a brawl, baby, because I am going to take you for everything you have left. You're going to pay for taking my money. I've busted my ass and fucked over a lot of people to get ahead, and I'll be damned if some country bumpkin takes it from me!" Michael says, holding his throat.

They all know the fight is just beginning, but Elizabeth gathers up her kids, and soon after, they're leaving the house together. She takes them back to the hotel where Kevin and M.J. share a room.

Alone after sending them all out to get something to eat, Elizabeth breaks down in tears. Her entire world is gone and has no clue which way to go from here. She's afraid for M.J.'s well-being, and Kaitlin's a mess too. She sits with her hands cupped over her face crying with such force Elizabeth can't see even the sliver of light at the end of the tunnel.
