A Collage Student's Feast
"Not fast enough." I mumbled, half asleep, and took another gulp of ambrosia. What was this? My second cup? My third? Didn't know. Didn't care. After I set the styrofoam cup down again I grabbed the small wrench I had put on my desk for future use.
Using it I fiddled with the magnetic field generator which was used to make the disks float. Something had jammed it and was keeping the disks from running smoothly. This had to have been 18th time it'd happened today! Every time I looked away something managed to work its way to the inner workings of my bike.
All at once everything went dark. My wrench fell to the floor and I let out a yelp of pain as it hit my foot. Quickly the lights came back on again and I saw Tadashi running over.
"Sorry, Go." He pulled a black swivel chair for me to sit on, which I used gratefully. My toe throbbed and I had to bite my lip to keep down a yelp. "I thought I was the last one here."
"No problem, Dashi." I inhaled deeply as the pain began to subside. "I thought I was the last one too. Why are you here so late?"
"Baymax. He shut off all of the power in my room, though." He rubbed the back of his neck and a dorky smirk made an appearance. "I would be staying later but the guy I called said he couldn't come until tomorrow morning."
Later? It was already well past midnight and most everyone else was long gone. Even I was planning on spending no more than another hour in the lab before calling it a night, and Tadashi was usually gone before I even thought of shutting down.
"Sucks." I said, getting up to fiddle with the bike again. Eventually I managed to pry a bolt from inside the bike.
"What's wrong with your toy?" He asked, spinning the disk where it hung in the air. It faltered mid circle before spinning smoothly again.
"Things keep getting lodged in the magnetic field generator. At this rate I'll lose my scholarship." I let my head fall back with a groan.
"Oh come on, Go." Tadashi took my chin and stared into my eyes. "Use that huge brain of your. What can you do to fix it permanently? Look at it from a new angle"
"I don't know!" I exclaimed. After a minute of silence I shook my head. "Maybe I could ask Wasabi to teach me about his tech? I could set it up around the desk and rework it to repel rather than cut?"
"There you go!" He pulled a wooden stool up and sat. I followed his example and dat back in the swivel chair. He reached into is messenger bag and pulled out two sticks of gum. "And to celebrate: a collage student's feast."
I grinned and took one of the candies. Being the nerds we were we hit the sticks together, as if they were champagne glasses. Quickly I unwrapped the foil and plunked the gum into my mouth. The taste of classic bubble gum overwhelmed my buds and I blew a bubble, only to pop it in my mouth.
"To friendship." I laughed and shrugged on my leather jacket. I had purchased it at the small thrift shop on campus and it was my new favorite thing in the world.
"Through thick and thin." He stood up and followed me to the lab doors.
"In life and death." I agreed before hitting the lights and we made our way down the stairs.
