Suspects (14)

NOTE: In this chapter's image, for those who don't know, the word dinheiro means money

Lauren Jauregui's Point Of View

After a quick shower and change of clothes, I drove to the police station as fast as I could. The news that the girls found the number of the account to where the stolen money was transferred brought more excitement and joy to my day, which by the way was already much more tranquil thanks to Camila. I didn't know how to explain it, but something that night had been different. The Latina not only gave me a wonderful and satisfying night of sex, but she also made me relax, and consequently forget my problems. The divinely delicious dinner brought a sort of calmness to me. I confess that having that side of the Latina was somewhat different, however, good.

-Good Morning, Agent. – one of the police officers said as soon as I entered the precinct.

-Good Morning.

I crossed the precinct's reception quickly, heading towards the elevators. My head began to work faster, bringing with it anxiety. I pressed the button of the floor where my office was twice, in a failed attempt to go faster. As soon as the metal doors opened, I headed towards my office. Upon entering it, I came across Vero, Normani and Ally.

-Finally! – Ally exclaimed as she got up from her swivel chair.

-Sorry, I had to make a quick stop at home to take a shower.

I received some mischievous looks, which I took care of ignoring. I approached my desk, where I had a jumble of paperwork next to the laptop that we got from the abandoned warehouse.

-Please give me the report.

Normani glanced at Veronica, who nodded.

-Well, Lauren... Since I was one of the biggest responsible for the lack of supervision of the system, I asked the girls to stay with me last night. – Vero spoke with her eyes focused on me – And together we assembled the computer again.

-It was a bit difficult and laborious, the machine had a good security system. – Normani said with a visibly exhausted expression.

-But the important thing is that we handled it. And we were able to get the transaction history. We know the numbers typed in the process, but only that. – Ally completed while pushing the piece of paper with the numbers towards me.

-With this numbers we can know the bank and the agency, right? – I asked as I stared at the numerical sequence.

-Yes. And we've already done a quick search through the police system. The account is in Switzerland. – Vero said handing me another paper.

-Dammit.

Swiss banks and their unique way of protecting information is going to make things more difficult. It wasn't for nothing that many criminals tended to have their money properly saved in the Swiss safe. There, the confidentiality of information of any type of transaction or data was followed vigorously, unless requested by the account owner.

-We can ask for a warrant, we can get the information, and they will have to give it to us. – Normani said.

-For that we'd have to talk to the department of big cases there. – I muttered unsatisfied.

-I have acquaintances there. – Ally exclaimed.

-You could get in touch with them, send a team to the bank. – Veronica let out calmly.

-No... – I backed away from the desk, as my head seemed to work faster than normal – We are not telling anyone yet.

The three women looked at me confused, trying to decipher what was going through my head. I couldn't take any type of rash decision, everything had to be properly thought and calculated.

-But, Lauren, we have... – Veronica started to speak.

-We only have a sequence of numbers.

Silence settled in that room, everyone looking at each other. I sighed heavily, as I walked towards the commode behind my desk.

-I need to think about what we'll do now. – I spoke calmly as I poured a good amount of coffee in the cup with the NYPD coat of arms.

-She's right. – Normani said.

-I'll dismiss you this morning since you spent the night here.

-It's all I need, my bed must be missing me. – Ally exclaimed as she got up.

I let out a chuckle, bringing the cup of hot coffee up to my lips. They all got up and went to their desks to get their things so they could leave.

-Girls... – the three of them looked at me quickly – This information can't leave this place. Only the four of us know about this and I want to keep it that way for now.

-As you wish, Agent Jauregui. – Normani agreed – I'm going now, I still have to go to Collins Enterprise later.

-Good work, Hamilton.

-Thank you, see you later girls. – the woman said before heading to the elevators.

It didn't take long and soon Ally also said goodbye, leaving only Veronica and I on the floor where my office and their desks were. Vero didn't dare say anything, just continued to organize her desk and pack her bag in silence.

-Vero...

I placed the cup of coffee on the shelf where I was leaning against, receiving a serene and curious look from my best friend.

-I wanted to apologize for being so rude to you.

-You don't have to apologize, you have every right to be mad. Because of my carelessness, all of this happened, and I know how much this operation is important for your career.

-Not only for mine, for our career. – I corrected her.

-For ours.

-Come here, give me a hug. – I said as I opened my arms for her, who expanded her lips into a smirk – Sometimes I want to kill you, but even then I still love you.

Vero approached slowly and wrapped her arms around my body. I hugged her with all my affection, reciprocating the hug with the same intensity. Even amid so many problems and difficult times, Vero has always been by my side, going through it all with great determination. She wasn't only my best friend, she was also my sister.

-I love you too, Laur. But I'm still curious to know where you spent the night. You were having sex, weren't you, you naughty woman?

I freed myself from Veronica's arms, letting an amused laugh escape my lips.

-You can't not be you for 5 minutes?

She raised her hands as if showing innocence. I just shook my head, grabbing the cup of coffee from the shelf.

-I was with Camila.

-I don't even know why I asked if I already knew the answer. – she let out ironically.

-Oh yeah? I could be with another woman.

The woman stared at me with a bored expression.

-If you could see another woman in front of you, I could even think that. But Mrs. Collins doesn't let that happen.

Vero was speaking as she straightened the jacket on her body. I frowned and sat down on my chair, behind my desk.

-What do you mean by that?

-I mean that Camila is the type of woman who knows how to get someone's attention, who knows how to be exactly everything that the person wants her to be. Let's say that she has everything that attracts you, and with that you only have eyes for her.

I didn't say anything, just continued to sip on my coffee, thinking about the things that my best friend had just spoken. And analyzing all the facts, Vero was completely right.

-Is that bad?

-Taking into consideration that she's married? Yes. But if you can leave your feelings out of it, then it's great for you.

-Then everything is cool. You know exactly that emotional involvement is far from happening to me.

Vero stared at me for brief seconds, in which we stayed in absolute silence.

-I have a feeling that it will be different now.

I rolled my eyes impatiently and accommodated myself better on the chair.

-That's the sleep affecting your neurons. You better go home. – I muttered.

-Yeah, I better go, I can only see those computer parts and numbers in front of me.

-Then go home and sleep a lot.

-I will, but think about what I said, okay? – Vero spoke as she headed to the elevators, leaving me alone in my office.

-She's crazy. – I muttered.

Camila and I had a good connection from the first moment we laid eyes on each other, however, it was clear how that was restricted to desire and arousal. Since she and I didn't have the least possibility of having some kind of emotional involvement. Getting involved with the Latina was already being one of the most risky and mindless things in my life. I had the biggest case of my entire career in hand, and she was one of the pieces that could knock me down easily.

-But if no one finds out, we are fine... – I whispered as I grabbed the paper with the account number, which was on the desk.

My eyes scanned number by number, and right after the other report with the data of the agency location. Switzerland was the perfect place to hide a large sum of money, since it was much more difficult to get the information about the account owner. But I wouldn't give up so easily, I would discover something, even if for that I'd have to have the trouble of going over there.

-Let's analyze a little. – I whispered to myself.

I grabbed the folder with all the documents about that case, reading again some situations that could have high relevance in the investigation process. Everything there needed to be thoroughly analyzed so that no kind of information goes without being seen. I wrote down some data in a notepad on the desk. My thoughts seemed to run at a scary speed with many papers and information contained therein. I don't know for how many hours I stayed there, only surviving on coffee, without receiving calls or people in my office, but at some point I realized that the whole desk was filled papers, photos and documents. I was committed to organize that process so that in the end I could find out something. I got up from my chair, grabbing a marker to use on the board in my office. I would start now with the investigation's organizational chart, I would list those involved and their connections.

-Let's see now.

I began with the weaker suspects, of little relevance, but still suspects. I wrote down their names at the bottom part of the board, drawing a line to the intermediate suspects, those who possessed a relatively close connection. And going up now to the main suspects, those who might have a direct connection to the theft. I put their photos on the top of the organizational chart, above their names. Putting now all the little papers from the notepad, glued to each suspect present there. The small yellow papers stood out with the color of the board, drawing attention to their probable reasons. My eyes remained glued to the three people at the top of the board, to their photos, that brought to my thoughts the image during the theft process. But of course, everything there was still only hypothesis, perhaps one of the people who were below would be the big responsible for the disappearance of the money, and the closest to it could be only pawns in this board game. One of them was the owner of the million dollar account in Switzerland, and I would find out who. I drank another dose of coffee, feeling my stomach growling with hunger. It was already past 3PM and I was still there, holed up in that department, trying to organize my thoughts. I grabbed my phone from the desk to take a picture of the entire organizational chart done on the board, after that I removed all the information contained there. I couldn't afford to leave everything exposed inside the police station, since one of my suspects worked there. I would assemble another board again, but at home.

Upon arriving home, I got rid of the papers and clothes, heading towards the bathroom. Soon after some good minutes in the warm shower, I got dressed and started fixing something to eat. While the ingredients were cooking, I remembered that my phone was still turned off. At this point, it should already have a good amount of calls and texts. I turned on the device, which within minutes was bombarded with notifications.

-Jesus...

Texts from Vero, Ally, Taylor and Camila. I started answering them, when I received a call from Taylor, interrupting what I was doing:

-Finally! – she exclaimed as soon as I picked up.

-I'm sorry, Tay. I was busy at the precinct. – I spoke somewhat melancholically due to hearing my sister's voice on the other side of the line – How are you?

-I'm good, Laur. And you?

-I'm good too, but very busy.

-I imagine so, you almost don't call anymore.

I propped the phone between my ear and right shoulder, as I grabbed the spoon to stir the ingredients in the pot with boiling water.

-I'm sorry, I swear that I'll try to call more often. How is everything there? How's dad doing?

-Everything is fine, I'm full of work to do, but I'm handling it all. And dad is involved with that car repair shop, I think now he can manage everything.

-Yeah? I'm proud of you. And dad really did it?

The aroma that emanated from the pots made my stomach growl. The smell at least was delicious, hopefully it will taste delicious as well.

-Thank you. I'm doing everything right. Just waiting for the letter of approval. Studying psychology is really what I want most. And well, he did it, he made a kind of partnership with Mr. Adams. And now they are looking for the place, but I think it's in another city.

That news had actually further improved my day. After leaving the police force, Mike always wanted to work with cars or motorbikes, but our financial situation still wasn't big enough for him to manage one car repair shop alone. While not being able to work with what he wanted, he just continued to take care of a trade shop in the town center.

-That's wonderful, Tay. But wait, another city?

I turned the stove's small button so that the flame would turn off. And then grabbed the pot to put it on the counter.

-Yes! Mr. Adams has a good place in Miami, and it was what he offered to the partnership. I think we are going to move to Miami, Lauren.

-Wow, I never expected to see dad leaving Mount Vernon. But I'm really happy about it. Even more to know that you sent letters for the college there, right?

-Yes, it's one of the factors why dad's considering to go there. In fact, I think everything is already settled.

-I'm very happy, really.

-And you there?

I sighed heavily, as I placed the phone on the table and pressed the speaker button so that I could talk to Tay while eating dinner.

-I'm in a really big investigation. And very complicated, I feel like I'm going to go crazy at any moment.

-Are you sure you want that? Here was so much simple and safe.

-Yes, despite being much more difficult here, it's gratifying. You know that I love challenges, and this case is certainly the biggest one.

-You like the challenge and the danger. – the younger one murmured on the other side of the line.

-Exactly.

-And Vero?

-She's sleeping now, she stayed up all night. I think she won't wake up any time soon. – I let out amid a low chuckle.

-I miss you, Laur.

-I miss you too, and dad. I promise that I'll visit you soon, in some holiday.

-Promise?

-I promise.

We talked for a few minutes about random things, about plans and all that we could catch up on. I missed my family, the affection when they greeted me at the end of the day, Mike's and Taylor's smile every time I got home. But things couldn't always remain the same, when you wanted to evolve and change your life to an opposite side of comfortable and safe, in which I found myself, everything needed to be different. Changes always have a high price to pay.

-Don't forget to call me.

-I won't. When you move to Miami let me know.

-I will. Take care, Laur. I love you.

-I love you too, tell dad that I love him.

-I will! Bye.

-Bye.

I ended the call with Taylor, dropping the phone aside. I walked over to the center table in the living room, grabbing the folder with all the documents, photos and investigation files. I decided that I would re-assemble the organizational chart again, now in the board I had at home. Here I didn't fear that anyone could see, since only Vero and I frequented the apartment. It took me a few minutes, recreating everything that I had done at the precinct, but in the end everything was exactly like the first one. Lacking only the last photo and some papers.

-You're the only one that's not in place... – I mumbled as I put the photo on the right corner of the top of the board – Now all the photos are in place.

I looked at the organizational chart, now analyzing the connection between each person present there. Everyone, no matter how small the connection, had a direct connection to the person who was robbed. I sighed heavily, now grabbing the little yellow papers with the probable reasons, and suspicious, to put them next to each suspect, when I heard the doorbell ring shrilly.

-Dammit. – I grumbled as I put the papers inside the folder again – Who the fuck is it?

The doorbell rang again and I rushed to answer it. When I opened the door, I had the image of the Latina standing in front of me with a smirk on her lips.

-Hello, Jauregui.

-What are you doing here, Karla?

-Wow, rude much? Aren't you going to invite me in?

I swallowed hard and flashed her a smile. I stepped back, making room for the brunette to enter my apartment. Camila was wearing dark jeans and a delicate white silk blouse. On her feet there were black high heels with delicate straps. Her hair was tied in a sloppy bun, causing some strands of hair to fall on her face.

-How did you find out my address?

-Your record. By hiring you as a private security guard, I have access to all the information about you. – she said while walking into my apartment.

-Very clever. – I mumbled as I closed the door.

-Always. – she stopped walking, resting her eyes on me.

-To what do I owe the honor of your presence, Mrs. Collins? Missed me?

She suppressed a smile and shook her head.

-No, I just came to talk to you.

I frowned in confusion, not believing her words. What could Camila want from me besides sex?

-Are you kidding me?

She rolled her eyes impatiently and I didn't say anything. I walked towards the living room couch and motioned for her to sit. Karla seemed to examine every detail of my apartment, very cautiously.

-No, I'm serious. And I believe that the subject is of your interest.

I inched closer to her, now sitting beside her. Unlike the brunette, I was completely sloppy, with short gray cotton shorts and a simple black crop top. My hair was tied in a well made ponytail, and my feet were bare .

-You are leaving me curious, Camila.

-I imagined you would.

-Then tell me.

She relaxed her body on the couch, letting out a sigh between her parted lips.

-Brandon was in my house today. And we talked to Christopher over the phone. – she started looking into my eyes.

I stayed in silence so that she could tell me everything without interruptions.

-He asked how the case was doing and Brandon told him that so far it's stagnant. I didn't say anything about the discovery that you informed me of earlier today. Since that must come from you.

-Yes, and I appreciate that.

-But I don't know if that was the right thing to do. Christopher is angry and he said that if you don't find something really concrete in a week, he'll ask for you to be removed from the investigation.

-He can't. – I seethed.

-Lauren, Brandon can. And he does everything that Christopher asks.

I huffed angrily, because Camila was right. Brandon was clearly a puppet in Collins' hands, and I couldn't do absolutely anything against it.

-Your husband is a son of a bitch. – I blurted impulsively – Dammit, I'm sorry.

Camila smirked and shook her head.

-It's okay.

-Did you talk about anything else?

-Christopher has many acquaintances, he said that he knows a great investigator, and that that person would fit perfectly well in the case.

-He can't put someone he knows. The investigator must be totally impartial.

-Brandon. – that was the only word Camila said.

I rolled my eyes impatiently. The circle was closing and I needed to move forward with this investigation.

-One week?

-Yes, it's the days that he'll be away. In about 7 days Christopher returns to New York.

-What's the reason for his trip?

-Business, they are looking for a new area for oil extraction. And he needs to be present.

I nodded slowly, thinking about all that information. We stayed in silence, as my mind seemed to run at an absurd speed. Camila just looked at me, causing a doubt to hover over my head for a few seconds.

-Camila...

Yes? – she asked as she looked at me.

-Why are you helping me?

She stayed in silence for a few seconds while our eyes remained fixed on each other.

-I don't know, Lauren.

Camila was an enigma, a secret little box with almost humanly indecipherable codes. Her so intense brown eyes were fixed on me, with the multitude of secrets that I knew existed.

-Are you sure?

-Yes. I only trust you to solve this case, and I know how it is important for your career.

-You confuse me.

-Why? – she asked with a frown.

-Nevermind. – I answered quickly, somewhat nervous.

Her eyes analyzed me quickly, as if they were capturing every change in my emotional state.

-Are you alone?

-No, Vero is sleeping in her room. – I said as I pointed towards the hallway.

-Does she know that you and I...

-Yes.

Camila let out a laugh and leaned slightly forward, inching her delicate lips closer to mine.

-You told your friend that you had sex with me?

-She would find out eventually. – I let out nervously because of our proximity – Vero knows absolutely everything about me.

-And she'll keep our secret, Lauren?

-Yes, she always keeps my secrets.

-Now, ours. – she whispered.

Camila closed her eyes and rubbed the tip of her nose on my cheek, letting me feel her soft skin against mine. I closed my eyes, allowing myself to feel that contact. The apartment was filled with silence, giving me the opportunity to only hear our breathing changing gradually. I felt the brunette's soft lips dragging across my jaw line, going towards my chin. Camila's teeth closed slowly in that area, in a subtle bite. On impulse, I brought my hand to her neck, letting my fingers get lost between the stands of her hair. We opened our eyes at the same time, and that electric current seemed to have intensified more. We didn't say anything at all, we just stayed in a constant silence, just staring at each other.

-Ours. – I whispered.

Her lips expanded into a smile, showing those white teeth. She inched even closer, now pushing my shoulders so that I would lean my back on the couch. The Latina stood up and sat on my lap with one leg on each side of my body.

-Do you think she'll wake up now?

I arched my head back when Camila brought her hand to the side of my face. Her thumb gently slid over my bottom lip while her eyes remained fixed on mine. My hands rested on her thighs, moving slowly, up and down.

-I don't think so, she spent the whole night working.

-Then I believe that she won't mind if I keep you company, right? – she asked as she deposited small wet kisses on my neck.

I sighed heavily as I felt her lips slide on my skin.

-She won't, she won't mind at all. – I murmured as I swallowed hard.

Camila continued with those slow caresses. Her full lips moved slowly, all over my neck. I could feel the breaths of air against my ear, making my whole body shiver. She didn't seem to be in a hurry, it was as if she wanted to enjoy every second. Gently, she lowered the thin strap of my top and kissed my right shoulder, moving towards my collarbone, making me sigh. I was already feeling my sex wet with that simple contact. Skillfully, she licked the beginning of neck up to my chin, like a feline. In that instant my hands went up to her waist, squeezing a little hard. Camila sighed in surprise and moved her lips to my ear.

-If you start squeezing and touching me like that, I won't be able to hold myself. – she whispered, and then sucked my earlobe.

I wrapped Camila's body with my arms, squeezing her tightly against me. I gathered my strength and got up from the couch with her on my lap, making her wrap her legs around my waist. I walked a few steps forward until pressing the Latina's body against the wall of the living room. She put her feet on the ground and let me kiss her lips with all the desire that consumed me in that moment. My hands were on her neck, pressing her against me. Camila's hands snaked inside my top, letting her nails drag on my skin. I felt the brunette's soft tongue slide over mine, in slow and at the same time intense sucks.

-I want to know why I can't resist you, Lauren. – she muttered as soon as I descended with my kisses to her neck.

I licked that area, to then bite real slow, hearing a low moan in response and feeling her nails being dug into my back.

-You want to go to my bedroom? – I asked her, and when she was about to answer, she stopped suddenly.

I frowned trying to understand what had happened. Camila was staring into a corner of the living room, and I just looked in the same direction as her, when I realized what had caught Camila's attention.

Dammit.

She looked at me serious and then removed my hands from her body. I closed my eyes and swallowed hard as soon as she walked away from me, going towards the board where I made the criminal organizational chart. Camila stopped before the board, analyzing everything that was there. I didn't approach, I just stood where I was, looking at her.

-So this means that I'm one of the main suspects of the theft? – she asked as she turned towards me.

Camila's photo was there, along with the other two people in the first line of the organizational chart. I took a deep breath and took a few steps until stopping in front of her.

-Yes, you are one of the main suspects.

We stared at each other for a while, now with desire and arrogance.

-And you tell me that with such ease?

I smirked at her, lifting my hand to touch the brunette's face.

-Everyone, absolutely everyone is a suspect, Karla. You are too smart, you can't be left out.

She nodded and backed away, turning towards the board. Camila stared at it again and soon turned towards me, leaning her body on the commode that was there.

-And even thinking that, you still have the courage to get involved with me? Even thinking that I might have stolen?

-I can't control it. I could be fucking the damn woman who's messing up my head with this investigation, or not.

-Son of a bitch. – she cussed.

-It's part, and you like it.

-You're no good, Jauregui.

-Much less you.

-That you don't know, I'm just one of your suspects, right?

-Even if you haven't stolen. You're no good. – I let out with a sarcastic smile, receiving another from her.

Camila grabbed the hem of my top and pulled me closer. I felt her lips collide against mine, soon asking for passage for her tongue, which entered my mouth with a wonderful skill. We kissed with hunger, desire and a hint of anger. Our bodies seemed to have a unique fit, almost perfect?

-I give you information and you put me as a suspect. If you didn't fuck so well, I'd send you to somewhere far away. – she murmured as she turned her back to me, looking at the board again.

I let out a laugh and glued my body to hers from behind. Now Karla knew who were my main suspects, but she didn't know the reasons, since I didn't have time to continue and finish the organizational chart. She seemed to try to understand all that.

-What's this? – she asked, as I kissed her neck.

I looked to where the brunette was pointing, seeing the account number.

-An account, in Switzerland.

-The money is in it?

-Apparently so.

-And whose is it?

-That's exactly what I have to find out. But for that I'll have to get in touch with the department there. Unfortunately.

-Unfortunately? – she asked confused.

-I didn't want to let anyone else handle this case. It will make it even more messier.

She nodded, thoughtful.

-And why don't you go over there?

-I'm your private security guard as well, I can't leave you alone. It's in the contract I signed.

Camila turned to face me, now staring at me. She seemed to be thinking, when finally she spoke:

-Let's go to Switzerland together.

I let out a loud laugh, but she continued serious, showing the seriousness of her words.

-Wait... Are you serious?

-Yes, Lauren. I have an art project with the sights in Switzerland in mind for some months now and I can take care of that while you solve your problems. This way I can clear my record with you, since you think I'm stealing my own husband. – she said ironically.

I stood in silence for a few seconds, just analyzing all that.

-What will people say? We can't. I can't take you on an investigation trip. You are a suspect!

-I'll be going to Switzerland to take care of some projects. And you, as my private security guard, have to accompany me. Simple.

-Camila... We can't.

-It's decided. We embark tomorrow. – she informed as she deposited a little kiss on my lips.
