Chapter 1: Check yes juliet
AN: warning there are mentions of abuse. If you know the backstory to constantine you can kind of see where this is going. but fair warning.
The dull thudding against my window made me look up from the open textbook on my bed. I chose to ignore it but the more I ignored it the more persistent it became. My phone dinged and I looked at it.
'I'll keep tossing rocks at your window' the text read. I had to bite back a smile as I realized it was my best friend John Constantine. He had moved to the states a few years ago and we quickly became friends. Partly due to our fathers becoming good friends and partly because it got John out of his house. It didn't take me long to figure out what was going on over there so I helped him in any way that I could. My phone dinged again and I read the message. 'I'm serious luv even if I have to break your window'. I quickly got off my bed and went to the window, waving at John when I saw him. I opened the window and leaned out.
"What are we doing tonight John?" I called down to him. John smiled and dropped the rock he had in his hand.
"Whatever you want luv. Just get me away from here." He glanced over his shoulder at the porch to his house. I nodded and waved him up. John climbed up the rose fence that was installed on the side of the house. I had already started packing up my textbooks and making my room look cleaner. It was no secret to my family that I had a crush on John. I had ever since he moved here. It was just a good thing they were ok with him coming into the house through my window to avoid potentially running into his dad. Or that he would just appear and seemingly never leave. "You don't have to clean up on my account." John said as he stood next to the window with his hands in his pockets.
"I'm not cleaning for you." I said as I shoved my backpack into the closet and pulled out a different one. "I think you forgot what happened last time we went out and I left everything laying out." I glanced over at John and saw his face fall a little.
"Right." He nodded and scratched the back of his head. "I almost did forget about that." John gave me an apologetic look. John had come calling one night literally running away from his house and had taken me with him without a word of warning. When we had come back early the next morning, I found both my parents waiting up for me and got grounded because they thought something bad had happened to me. And no matter how much John or I explained, we were stuck in my house for two weeks and with a rule that I had to clean up before I went anywhere just so my parents knew I was safe.
"So where are we going?" I asked, holding up the spare backpack. John seemed lost in thought so I threw it at him. He caught it and snapped out of it. He looked at me with a daze expression. "I need to know what to pack stupid." I laughed as I took the bag back from John.
"Right. Uh well I just wanna get out of here for a bit." John sat down on the edge of my bed and tugged on the sleeves to his shirt. I finally got a good look at him. He looked at little pale and he was playing with his sleeves a lot.
"John what happened?" I asked as I sat down next to him. John flinched when I reached for him. I froze and waited for John to come to me.
"Sorry luv." He murmured and moved closer to me. I gently reached out and pulled his sleeve up. I gasped as I saw the burn marks on his forearm. "It was bad tonight." I saw John trying to bite back tears. "I can handle the punches and the killers but it was really bad tonight." I lurched forward and wrapped John in a hug. His face was buried in my shoulder and I held him as tight as I could.
"Wherever you want to go John." I whispered. "I'll be right behind you." I could feel John nod. He finally pulled back and ran a hand over his face. I Gave him a small smile and squeezed his shoulder. "There's no turning back for us tonight. Not unless you want to." John shook his head.
"I couldn't do that to you." He sighed and looked around the room. "You've got too much of a good thing to leave it behind even for a poor blighter like me." I shook my head and stood up to start packing the bag.
"I'd leave everything behind if you asked." I muttered as I went through the drawer John had started to keep. I felt something hit my back so I turned around to look at John. I raised an eyebrow at him and he smirked.
"Thought we might need another one." He pointed to the backpack at my feel. I nodded and continued packing. Music started to fill the room and I glanced over my shoulder at John who had put my iPod on. I giggled as he laid back on my bed and started to play an imaginary guitar. John caught my eye and winked at me with a smug grin on his face. I finished packing and walked into my closet. I quickly changed and grabbed a change of clothes for John. "Oi!" he exclaimed when I dumped his clothes on his chest.
"Get dressed." I said as I pushed him off my bed and laid down. He gave me a dirty look as he walked into my closet. "If we're gonna head out we gotta go soon." I moved to my side to watch him as he walked out. "You don't look too bad." John smirked at me and pushed me off my bed.
"You don't look so bad yourself darling." We both dissolved into a fit of laughter as John helped me up. There was a knock on my door before my mom popped her head in.
"Hi John." She greeted before coming into the room. "You two heading out tonight?" I nodded as I passed John one of the backpacks before putting the other on my back.
"Yep." John popped the 'p' before giving my mom a tight smile and moving his arm behind his back. We all knew what was going on over there but nothing we tried to do helped in anyway so we helped John in any way that we could.
"Well have fun. Don't come back too late and be safe." My mom said before giving us both hugs. "Are you going to be coming back here tonight John?" He nodded before taking my hand.
"Sure am. I might be here for a few days before it's ok to go back." I squeezed his hand at that information. My mom nodded and gave us both a smile.
"Enjoy yourselves." She said. "But not too much fun." A finger was pointed at us both in a teasing manner.
"Don't worry mom. We never do." I joked back before following John out of the window. He was on the ground before I was and helped me down from the rose fence. I looked up at my window and saw the light go out meaning my mom had left the room. I turned towards John and took his outstretched hand. "So where are we headed?" All John did was smirk at me.
