Chapter 1- He Called Back
"Shit, shit, shit," Y/N curses under her breath in her mind begging for the Universe that YoonGi did not receive a notification of her call.
"Hey, what's up?" HyoRin's voice is heard and the Medical Student sits down in front of Y/N with her tray full of food from the cafeteria.
Y/N does not respond still trying to go through the shock that she called her ex- whom she still harbors a few feelings for- and shut it right after. If he does see the call then- as the curious being he is- he will definitely call back and who knows what might happen then. The earth could split in two.
"Y/N?" HyoRin calls leaving the orange plastic spoon hand between her lips as she waves her hand in front of Y/N's face.
"Yes!" Y/N finally snaps back to reality.
"Are you okay?" HyoRin asks with wide eyes, perplexed by her best friend's sudden behavior.
"I don't know. I couldn't change my topic for the project and I ended up dialing YoonGi by accident," Y/N spews out the words while frantically looking around.
"What?" HyoRin gasps, the orange spoon falling down on the hard-plastic-white table in the University's Cafeteria, "How?"
"ugh," Y/N shows her discomfort as her facial expression turns into one of discomfort and she lets her shoulders slump down before she starts explaining everything to HyoRin.
"Oh...," HyoRin says as she looks at Y/N, "Well, you don't really have to go back to your exes. I know a few guys who've been there, we can ask them."
Oh, if only Y/N had actually paid attention and listened to what HyoRin just said. She might actually avoid the mess that's ahead of her but turns out fate wants it differently.
Just before HyoRin started talking Y/N's phone that lied on the table the whole time it started buzzing and on her screen showed Min YoonGi's contact. She lost complete contact with the world around her when her eyes landed on the screen.
He saw the notification...
She growls in her mind, cursing her fingers and the screen of her phone that is so sensitive to the touch. Without really using her brain to think further she takes the phone and slides her thumb over it to answer the call before she brings the speaker to her ear.
"Hello?" she asks, acting surprised to have received his call.
"Y/N? Hi. Um, I received your call just a bit ago. What's...the matter?"He hesitated to ask, which can only imply he wasn't sure whether to ask or not, but he's already called so he might as well ask.
Y/N is left a little bit starstruck at the sound of his voice. It has not changed one bit. Deep and velvety as always. His accent just as she remembered. Smooth. He was and still sounds so smooth.
No, no, Y/N, you can't think about him like that, he cheated on you, you broke up with him. It just can not work.
"Actually, that call was a butt-dial," she explains with a white lie, "However, I do need to ask of a favor from you."
"Oh?" he sounds surprised, "What is it?"
"I need to do a project for my Master and the topic is on the reasons men cheat,-"
"Ouch," he cuts her off.
"I know," she purses her lips, "And I wanted to ask- if you are comfortable with it of course- that we could meet up and discuss the reasons behind your actions. Of course, I am going to be completely professional on it."
"Uum...,"
"Y-you don't have to this. It's okay if you-," she tries to save it. Panic making her conclude on the fact that what she is asking of him is completely ridiculous and she's only to humiliate herself in front of him.
"When do you want to meet up?"
And that's when the system named Y/N completely shuts off. The only thing missing is Window's signature deactivation sound.
"O-oh," she stammers trying to gather her thoughts, "Um, you're the busier one, I assume, so whenever you're free?"
"I'm actually on a month long vacation right now so just tell me when and where and I'll be there.""Um,-"
"Next week on Monday, four pm at the coffee shop we met?" he cuts her off.
"They closed that place. Let's just meet up at the park by the building I live on Monday at four pm," she explains.
"All right, then. See you then," he says and with that, he hangs up.
"Are you crazy?" HyoRin asks dumbfounded at the conversation that just ended, "Didn't I just tell you I can get you a few guys?"
"You did?" Y/N's face loses all color as she stares at her friend frightened. A second later her expression morphs into one or regret and sorrow, "I'm sorry I got in a zone after I saw him calling," she speaks with a tone in her voice that's higher than her normal one, before she lets her head fall on the table with a thud and an "ouch," followed after.
"You can always cancel," HyoRin suggests and as she pops some bread into her mouth looking at her friends head.
Y/N raises her head slowly contemplating the idea. She could really do that. Call him. Tell him she found a way to do her project without needing him and then never hear from him again. Avoiding the awkward meeting all at once.
That last one is what doesn't add up in her recipe. As much as she hates what happened between them and the way he acted. She admits, she still has feelings for him she just can't seem to shake off, like Taylor Swift states in her song.
"I don't know, are they gonna agree for sure?" Y/N asks and HyoRin frowns.
"I'm not sure, they aren't exactly open about such stuff," her friend speaks in thought and Y/N scowls even more.
"I guess I should call my other exes too," a displeased expression is written on Y/N's face but nonetheless she picks up the phone to dial Jake and Kai.
"All right," HyoRin shrugs, "And to be honest, this might not be so bad after all."
"What do you mean?" Y/N perks her head up to look at HyoRin.
"As far as I know, that those relationships broke up without any discussion. At least now some light will be she into the matters."
And that's when it dawned upon Y/N. Not only will she be meeting up with three men who she was in serious relationships with, but she'll also have to face the reasons they left her for. Is she ready to face those reasons? Is she ready to accept that she probably had a fault into what led them into the bed of another woman?
Hell no she is not.
But on the other side, she needs to do it. Maybe that way, after giving closure to those relationships she'll stop having strong negative feelings towards them. Or feelings at all, in YoonGi's case.
Who knows what may have happened to them after they separated. In Y/N's theories, Kai has kept using girls for a few months then moved on the next.
That guy will never be able to settle down, it's impossible.
Jake...well, if he turns out gay, I won't be surprised honestly. He kept eyeing guys in that gym we went to.
But he did cheat on you with a female friend of yours, her subconscious throws at her a very solid argument that goes against her theory and she purses her lips in a judgemental way.
Maybe he was discovering himself?
"Will you call them?" HyoRin's voice sounds snapping Y/N out of her train of thoughts again. With a little shake of her head, she grabs her phone and dials Jake's phone number, hoping he hasn't changed his contact over the years. It has been five years since they broke up, so the chances are pretty high. But nonetheless, she stands lucky.
Jake answers the phone and seems to be rather cheerful to hear her voice after so long. This time she's not nervous at all to talk with her ex. The conversation flows almost too naturally due to Jake's enthusiasm and cheerfulness.
She nearly questioned whether she was talking to the real Jake or not, but there is no doubt, it's him. In the end Jake, happily agreed to help her out with her project and they settled on meeting up at his house on this Saturday's evening.
Next up, she dialed Kai. He didn't sound as enthusiastic as Jake did. In fact, he sounded pretty creepy and scary, but she gave it a try nonetheless. They agreed on seeing each other next Tuesday, one day after meeting YoonGi.
"Okay," she turned her phone off and looked at HyoRin who just returned with a new spoon to eat her food with.
"Are you nervous to meet them after so long?" HyoRin asks before taking a mouthful of rice.
"Jake was very friendly in the call," Y/N responds, almost with awe in her voice at how well her ex was. And somehow it made her happy that he was okay after everything. He didn't have an easy life.
"Kai?"
"He was...," she trails off in search of the right word, "I don't know. He kinda gave me the creeps, but back when I knew him he was pretty decent, except the whole...sleeping with other girls thing."
"He was a douche," HyoRin fires blatantly.
"Yeah,...you're right..."
"When am I not?" HyoRin smirks playfully.
"Shut up," Y/N slaps her arm and the two girls giggle.
"So...when can you know whether those guys will agree to the interview?" Y/N asks after a moment of silence between.
"In the next couple of days I suppose," HyoRin shrugs.
While the two girls continue with their lunch break and wait until the time for their next course comes, Min YoonGi is on the other side of the city looking over his phone and wondering why the hell he even agreed to meet up with Y/N and specifically helping her with such a project.
I'm nuts.
He considers while he takes his phone ready to start typing a message meant for Y/N where he cancels on her. But when her chatroom pops up and he sees her smiley face, on a picture from a year ago, in that small bubble, feelings of nostalgia hit his chest.
His gaze locks on her face, his thumb presses on the picture for it to magnify and the device only shows him a distorted version of it, as the original picture has been deleted. And then curiosity takes over him. He realizes that a year has passed since he last saw her.
Devastated is the word that fits his last memory of her. So many groundbreaking things have happened in his life since that day. Breaking up with her being one.
Is she better? He wonders. Is she worse? Did she move on?
Has she found someone better?
She probably has.
He asks and then answers to himself. The more he thinks about her the more curious he gets. Maybe after all meeting, her is not such a bad idea. Catching up won't do any harm right? And besides, he can finally explain his side of the story. The one he never got to tell, because he chose not to.
"Yoongi?" a sweet female voice calls out his name and he returns back to reality, turning his phone off almost instantly so that she doesn't see,
"Ah here you are," she smiles warmly and sits down on the white couch next to him, while he snakes his phone under his thigh, out of her vision.
"I missed you," she coos, leaning on him and wrapping her arms around his and placing one of her hands on his thigh.
"You had a tiring morning, HaEun?" he turns his head around to look at her leaning her head on his shoulder and plants a kiss on top of it.
"Mmhhmmm," she hums quietly, "It's hard, but it's worth it," silence falls for a few moments before she's heard taking a deep breath and then exhaling,
"I still can't believe we're getting married in less than a month," she says those words with a dreamy sigh and Yoongi wraps his arms around her tighter.
He stays quiet because he has nothing to say. To be fair, he has things to say, and those things weigh down on his chest, but he can't say them. Not now, not to EunHa.
