Chapter 4: Under The Surface
Y/N's POV:
The dawn light was blood red with pink streaks that shone brightly under the clouds. I opened my eyes with Chat Noir's arms around me as we leaned against a wall. His steady breathing was like a lullaby that had no words. I nuzzled my head in closer to him and felt the heaviness of my eyes ease away. Even though I was still tired, I wanted to stay awake. The stars blinked between the clouds at us, the dark blue night sky gradually turning lighter and lighter.
Chat heaved a sigh in his sleep and I felt his arm tighten around my shoulder. I laid my head back on his chest again, and fell half asleep and stayed half awake. If we needed to move at any moment, I wanted to be ready. No dream came to me. But that was ok. I didn't need a dream to make me feel secure, make me feel safe, or even entertain me. All I needed was a heart beat.

"Kitten... Kitten?"
"Chat?" I mumbled, not opening my eyes. Chat's chest rumbled with a purr and I felt his hand mess up my hair. I opened my eyes and sat up, rubbing my eyes. "Good morning, Kitten. Sleep well?" he asked. I nodded and yawned, blinking away my tiredness. I glanced over at Chat and he was already up on his feet and stretching. His tail curled up as he raised his hands to the sky. I giggled a little at that. He was just so cute!!
"What's so funny?" he asked as I stood up to his level. I felt myself blush. I tried pushing the feelings away but there was no hiding it now.
"It's just you," I said. "You're just so cute and funny and..."
"Go on?" he purred. A playful glint brightened in his deep green eyes. I froze for a moment, time just ticking the seconds away. How could I explain to him that he was so perfect? So innocent? So... Chat Noir?
"I... Uhmm... I don't really know how to explain it to you...," I continued shyly. "It's- well it's... It's complicated."
Chat Noir stared at me with his dashing grin and his vibrant green eyes. His suit glimmered with the dawn light and the cool air made my breath cloud up in white. I swallowed, glancing at the other buildings around us. No one was up and out year. I would have to guess that it was around 5 am.
"You're just so you. You fit your looks and your life perfectly just the way you are. Your funny, your sweet, caring, defensive at times, and most of all, determined."
His gaze and grin softened to an astonished look. "I can't think of anyone who wouldn't look up to you. I know that Ladybug gets the spotlight all the time, but you work harder than her with saving people and showing them that you too hold the light, Ladybug doesn't hold it all alone." At that moment, the sun split through the clouds and I saw that at the bottom of his eyes, sparkling tears trembled with his eyelids. He stared at me, his pupils dilating wth the rising golden orange sun.
Did I hurt his feelings somehow? I thought, but I was too afraid to ask. After seconds of silence, I finally opened my mouth.
"Chat... Did I hurt your feelings?" I asked softly. The tears that hung on his eyes trickled down his black mask and he reached up to wipe them away.
"No. No, no, you're good. It's just... I haven't heard anyone say that about me. Ever. I'm always in Ladybug's shadow. Don't get me wrong! I love her to death and all, but... She just has the spotlight all the time," he said, his voice rasping. He cleared his throat and turned away from me and stared at the buildings. A chilled breeze ruffled his blond hair and made him look so powerful.
- Hours Later -
The sun was blacked by huge, puffy white and gray clouds as we leapt over the rooftops. I was getting better at this, and stronger too. I could see the forest's trees in the distance as we kept going. As we moved away from the center of the city, the buildings began to shorten and began to space out, causing me to use more force to leap away and latch onto the other buildings. Chat offered to carry me but I refused.
My heart pleaded for me to say yes, but I didn't want him to see that I was weak or pathetic. Neither did I want to stress him out or over work him with the ordeal of carrying me wherever we went. "Do you think it'll be safe if we just jump down to the ground?" I huffed, crouching on the edge of the building. Chat glanced down at the sidewalks that were gradually turning to just dirt paths.
"Maybe. Let's just go a couple more buildings, m'kay?" I nodded and watched him jump over to the building across the way.
When he landed, there was barely any sound. I bunched up my muscles and got ready to leap over the wide drop. The wind that blew past my face was chilled and came from the forest. The sweet smells of pine and forest smells made me smile. My hands caught on to the roof, but started slipping before my feet stopped me from falling to the ground. I climbed up the steep, metal roof with Chat next to me. I saw that he was focused and concern colored his eyes.
"Hey, you ok?" I asked, stopping him. He looked at me quickly before smiling back.
"Yeah, yeah. Why?" I shrugged and turned away, walking a bit slower up to the top of the roof.
"You just seem a little concerned about something," I sighed, "that's all." Chat rested his arm around mine and squeezed me in to a side hug. I felt my face start to burn up and my heart beat hard and fast.
"Don't worry about me, ok? I'll be fine," he assured me. When his hand left my shoulder I nodded and hid my face with a silly, love-struck smile on it. We kept jumping from building to building with ease until we came to where the towns ended and the trees began.
"This is it?" I whispered. The great pine trees towered over us, veils of shade under their tree trunks and copper golden pine needles lay in a heavy blanket before us.
"Yep...," Chat said, jumping down and landing on all fours. The ground under me was far away, and I felt a small twinge of fear when I stared at it. Chat glanced up at me and waved for me to come down. I nodded and tightened my hands into fists. I can do this. I can do this! I thought.
I took in a deep breath and got ready to jump down. But suddenly, a hand slammed against my back and I was flying forward into the hands of gravity. I glanced over at Chat and saw that his summer green eyes were now painted with fear and the black pupil that was once round and calm was now a cut of black. I turned my head and saw the figure behind me. Dark orange with the hint of black and white here and there.
I moved my eyes down to the ground and saw that the ground was coming closer and closer. Then I saw Chat skidding towards me on his knees, but he was too late. I'm sorry, Chat!
