Sia Brown and the journey to Harmal
The little girl didn't stop looking out of the window at the lush green trees while her parents spoke in the background. She placed her hand on the window, leaning a bit towards the window to look at the road as the bus moved.
The sound of 'ka-chick' made her shift her gaze from the window to the lady sitting in the front seat before her. Her blue eyes curiously looked at the camera the lady was holding.
She leaned forward and placed her little hands on the seat as she wanted to have a better view of the lady and the camera.
"Sia, what are you looking at darling? Please, sit back in your seat," her mum said.
Sia quickly turned back and looked at her mum and dad who were looking at her. "Sorry, I'm curious to see the camera."
"Camera?"
"The lady in the black dress is holding a camera and I wish to see what she has clicked," Sia said. Her thick Berkshire accent was dripping in her voice. But it's cute coming out of her mouth.
"But baby, that's not the way. You shouldn't peek in, if you want to see the picture, go around and ask the lady politely to show you the picture," the mom explained.
"Okay, but I don't want to go."
"If you don't go and ask, you won't be able to see the picture on the camera."
Her white cheeks started turning pink as she started feeling shy. "Don't be shy darling. The lady wouldn't be saying anything to you."
"Okay." Sia slowly got off her seat and held on to her mum's thigh before getting out of the row. She went over to the lady's row. Her blue eyes started gazing at the lady who was smiling and looking out of the window. Her long hair is braided into a fishtail, and Sia is awed at the red hair of the lady.
"Auntie," Sia called.
The lady with red hair turned her head and looked at Sia in astonishment. This is the first time she was ever called 'Auntie'.
"Yes, cutie?"
"Hmm," Sia hummed and looked at her mum. Her mum encouraged her to speak with the lady.
"Hmm, can I see the pictures on your camera? You have clicked the picture of the forest. I love pictures and videos. I even took pictures on my mum's phone and I― I would like to see the pictures please," Sia blabbered out in nervousness.
The lady with red hair laughed. "What's your name, girl?"
"Sia... Sia Brown."
"Nice to meet you, Sia, I have a lot of pictures on my camera. You have to sit over here and look at the pictures. Are you okay with it?"
Sia looked at her mum for an answer. Her mum encouraged her to sit with the lady and communicate. Sia is a very shy girl and she has difficulty having a conversation with others.
Her parents tried to engage Sia in conversations with others so that would help her socialise.
"Yes."
"Well, have a seat." The lady removed her backpack and placed it on the floor.
The lady helped Sia sit on the seat. The lady pushed her hand out and, with a smile on her face, she introduced herself.
"I'm Elodie... Elodie Rufer."
Sia shyly shook her hands with Elodie's. Elodie chuckled and turned her camera to Sia and started showing her the pictures she had clicked.
"This one is beautiful. I saw the bird but didn't know it was big," Sia said, looking at the bird.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?"
"Yes, it is."
"You have so many pictures on your camera."
"I'm a photographer so I have many pictures with me," Elodie said, loving the girl beside her. There is this curiosity in her eyes that is making Elodie show more of her work.
"As in the person who clicks pictures on birthday parties, engagements and weddings?" Sia asked.
Sia with her family went to New York to attend their uncle's wedding and now they are returning to their home.
"Hmm, they are photographers too and I'm a travel photographer. I take pictures while I travel to different places. I take people's pictures, nature pictures, animal pictures and everything I like," Elodie explained.
"Like?"
Elodie picked up her camera and pointed it at Sia. "Like you are beautiful to me and your eyes are so beautiful and unique. They are expressive, so with your permission, can I click your picture?" Elodie asked.
Sia nodded her head. Elodie smiled before clicking a picture of Sia. "Do we have to give permission for them to click our pictures?" Sia questioned.
"Yes, if it's your family member, then it's okay, but if it's a stranger, then the person shouldn't be taking your pictures without your permission," Elodie explained.
"Oh."
Elodie showed Sia the picture she had clicked. Sia warmed up to Elodie and Elodie listened to Sia patiently. She could understand how excited Sia was as she spoke about her love for nature and how there is a big banyan tree in her backyard.
"We have an open backyard and I play there with my brother. You will see so many birds every day. It is so beautiful when the sun sets. My brother and I stayed there watching the birds and the sky. You should come and click the pictures with this camera."
Elodie chuckled. "Sure, I will visit the place." Sia's parents shared a look and smiled, that Sia was having a good time with the good stranger.
Elodie handed the milk chocolate to Sia. "I hope you eat chocolates."
"Yes! They are my favourite. Thank you so much. Can I call you Elodie?"
"Yes, you can call me Elodie."
"Your name is different. I have never heard it before."
Elodie chuckled. "Yes, it means lovely and pretty."
"How old are you?" Elodie questioned.
"I'm eleven years old."
"Oh, that's nice. What standard are you at?"
"Fourth standard."
"Where do you live?" Elodie asked.
"I live with my parents in Siolim village," Sia answered. Elodie leaned down to get the chocolates from her bag.
"Oh, that's good. I have heard of Siolim village."
"Yes, where are you going? You are coming to Siolim?" Sia asked in excitement.
Elodie shook her head. "I'm going to Harmal."
"Harmal is after Siolim. My school is in Querim," Sia said, eating her chocolate. "And after Harmal is Querim."
"That's nice, guess I will be meeting you..."
"Yes, I would like to meet you. You are nice and you take nice pictures with your camera," Sia said. Sia is interested in taking pictures.
"Thank you, cupcake."
"Is that a nickname?"
"Yes, you don't like the nickname?"
"I do, but I never had any friends who called me by nickname."
"Oh, we are friends if we share chocolate together. Then I can give you a nickname."
"I love the nickname, Elodie."
"I forgot to tell you. I like taking videos of the sky. We have cows on our farm and I like to take videos of them when they eat grass," Sia said.
"You have a phone?"
"I don't."
"Then how do you record the videos?" Elodie asked, genuinely finishing off her chocolate and picking the tissue paper from her bag.
"My mommy's. I use my mommy's to record the videos."
"That's nice, what do you like to do in your free time or coming from school?" Elodie likes to hear stories from people. Travelling has taught her a lot of things and one of the main things she loves about travelling is meeting people of different age groups and having heartfelt conversations.
Sia smiled widely and started telling Elodie about all the things she did in the backyard or on her farm. She even took the phone from her mum and showed Elodie the pictures and videos.
"Do you think one day I will be able to click pictures like you?"
"Do you want to become a photographer when growing up?" Elodie asked.
"I don't know. I never thought about it but I like to click pictures and take videos..." Sia said.
"Know that if you are interested in something, work on it. Don't give up and one day you will be a master at it. Maybe you will be better than me. I held this camera when I was fifteen years old and now you are only eleven years old. You will be better than me," Elodie said, patting Sia's head.
"Really? Will I be able to buy a camera and be good at it?"
Elodie chuckled. "There's a saying that I read." Elodie tucked Sia's hair behind her ear lobe. "What you seek is seeking you."
"This means if you really want to have something in your life, even that something is wanting to be there in your life. Don't give up on your passion if you like taking pictures. You do... You continue and one day when growing up, you will buy the camera of your choice and use it for your happiness," Elodie explained.
"Oh." Elodie smiled and looked out of the window as they crossed the checkpoint.
'What you seek is seeking you.'
