It was hard not to pester Annabelle with questions, but it was also hard to pull her out of this trance that she kept going into whenever when there was a second of silence. Once we got out of Mogermentry, I think she finally had snapped out of it.
"What did you guys talk about?" Gabriella tried to take baby steps. I prefered to cut to the chase, but I supposed this approach was worth trying.
"Basketball, building cabins and other stuff." Annabelle bit her lip, clearly debating weather or not she wanted to tell us something.
"What do you mean 'other stuff'?" I asked. Gabriella glared at me. Apparently I had taken too big of a step along the conversation, but I didn't really care cuz I wanted answers.
"Excuse me, I don't kiss and tell." Annabelle taunted us before pulling herself into the front seat. I let it go, figuring I might be able to get more answers if she was happy in the front.
"A kiss?" I asked.
"Tell!" Gabriella finished. We made a pretty good pair sometimes.
"It was sweet. And, yeah." Annabelle clearly didn't want to talk, and I wasn't gonna push her. It would be a bad way to end the night.
"Hey guys, how long does it take to get back home?" Gabriella asked in a worried tone.
"My GPS says about an hour and a half. Why?" I answered.
"Um, It's 5:10..." Gabriella's voice trailed off.
"Wow, time flies." Annabelle said.
"Well, step on it!" I exclaimed. "Sunrise is at 6:50!"
"Agh!" Gabriella screamed and frantically tried put the car in drive.
"This is gonna be an interesting end." Annabelle huffed and sunk back into her seat. "So what all did you guys do while I was, uh, out and about?" I gave Gabriella a look, a 'Should I tell her?' Look. Gabriella faintly shook her head back and forth. I pretended that I didn't see, since I was bored and wanted some action.
"Gabriella and I had a little 'chat'." I watched as Gabriella's hands tightened around the wheel ever so slightly. I wondered if I overstepped, but chose to ignore it.
"Chat?" Annabelle looked towards Gabriella. She kept her eyes focused on the road with a blank expression on her face.
"Don't worry about it." Gabriella remarked blankly.
"Really. You're going to tell me, Annabelle Brite, not to worry about it? Yeah right." Annabelle sunk into the leather of her seat. I saw the pain in Gabriella's face and knew I might have overstepped a bit, but we were in too deep to change the subject.
"Gabriella likes Derrick." I said as quickly as I could. I watched Gabriella's cheeks go from a ghost white, to a blazing pink.
"What in the WORLD is wrong with you?!" Gabriella growled.
"Well, it's not like you were going to do anything about it!" I retorted.
"I have his number." Annabelle whispered.
"Why?!" Gabriella and I said in usion.
"School project..." Annabelle's voice trailed off.
"Give me your phone." I reached into Annabelle's jacket and swiftly snatched the device.
"Hey!" She protested, not that I cared.
"Okay, now your phone!" I grabbed Gabriella's iPhone from the middle table between her and Annabelle's seats. With what I would like to think of as expert texting skills, I punched the number of Derrick's phone into Gabriella's while reading it off of Annabelle's. I typed in a quick 'intro statement', and hit 'send'. "Anddd, sent!"
"What. Did. You. Just. Do." Gabriella's sentences always got a little choppy when she was mad. I suppose I got my entertainment for the night!
