Annabelle and I were just roaming around at Kroger, hand in hand. I tried my best to put on a relaxed face, but I was still a bit on the edge. Two teenagers at Kroger at one in the morning was probably pretty suspicious. We both looked a bit more mature than thirteen and could probably pass for fourteen or maybe fifteen if we really wanted to, but that was pushing it and still way below driving age.
All of the sudden, Annabelle pulled me into an aisle and started dragging me down it as if she was running away from something. Or someone, for that matter.
"Annabelle, what the heck are you doing?" I exclaimed in a hushed whisper since her eyes were pleading me to be quiet.
"Mack's mom is over there, and if she sees me out, especially at one in the morning, with a boy, she's definitely going to call my parents. And then I get grounded for the rest of my life."
"Well I'm glad I'm such a problem," I joked. Annabelle didn't really get it, and looked hurt. "I'm kidding!" I said with a smile. She sort of half-smiled, obviously stressed about how close she came to Mack's mom spotting her. I, growing up with Mack, know her well and would have probably gotten away with it. I didn't know where Annabelle stood with Mack's mom though.
"We'd better get out of this store." Annabelle said, leading me towards the exit.
"Okay," I smirked a little, knowing I could totally make a move as long as we were out of contact with Gabriella, Mack, Mack's mom and most importantly, Derrick. If he or any one of our friends caught me with Annabelle I swear I would never hear the end of it. As long as they aren't playing in the plant section outside-which the boys might be because there's a mess to be made-we were all clear.
