5: Clean
Bright sunlight illuminates the plain white hospital walls, making Scarlet squint and wince every time she opens her eyes. She is really beginning to hate the place despite having one helluva hot man beside her. And as usual, Theo rushes over to the window to drape the blinds down.
Scarlet is really grateful for him.
The only reason she realises that she's been sleeping is the fact that she's waking up. Scarlet yawns and stretches her legs out on the bed in the most unladylike manner-- not that she's ever claimed to be one --grimacing when she tugs at the hand that has an IV attached to it.
"Did I fall asleep?" She muses.
"No. You took a walk down the street and now you're back." Theo snorts. "Yes Scarlet, you fell asleep." Scarlet rolls her eyes. The guy seems to know nothing about rhetorical questions.
"How long?"
"About three hours." Theo replies. "The doctor said it's the morphine."
"Oh"
Scarlet's head pounds again and she grips it.
What's with these constant headaches? And what's with this man distracting her from calling her baby every time? But then, she's the one that fell asleep. It's not like he's doing it on purpose.
"I did." Theo says.
"Hmm?" Scarlet asks, confused.
"I ignored your request on purpose."
"Oh?" Again, she didn't realise she was thinking out loud.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I called her."
"You did?" Scarlet asks, incredulously.
"Yes. It was the most dialed number in your log. 'My life'?" He raises an eyebrow at her. Maybe questioning the way Scarlet saved her daughter's number but she doesn't respond. Can't he tell? He can't be that dumb really. Lea's the best thing that has ever happened to Scarlet. The only good thing in her life. But then, how's Theo to know that? He can't possibly have any kids, doesn't even look like a kids' guy.
"Anyway, I just thought it's your boyfriend's or something." He shrugs.
Does she even have a boyfriend? Or husband perhaps?
"And?" Scarlet presses, pushing the boyfriend thoughts to the back of her mind. Not now.
"And a bubbly little girl picked up thinking it's you. She came with her nanny last night but you were unconscious."
"Was she scared? Oh my God! Did she cry? Did she panic?" Scarlet doesn't even realise she's rambling. Her mind races at the realisation that her little girl may have gotten scared shitless, watching her mommy laying unconscious.
"Hey," In three long strides, Theo walks over to Scarlet, brushing a lone escapee tear from her cheek and smoothing her hair softly. When Scarlet looks up, Theo is looking her straight in the eyes. Concern etched in the deep gray that is his eyes.
"She wasn't scared, and she didn't cry." He explains gently, a secret almost proud smile plays on his lips. Her girl seems to have that effect on everyone.
She can't help but smile ridiculously at the thought. She has the most amazing baby in the world. Then again, she's hers so maybe she's bound to think that way.
But Theo seems to share her views.
"She so strong Scarlet, and adorable."
"I know." Scarlet muses. "But what did you tell her? What did you give her to leave? I know she couldn't have left willingly."
He chuckles and stares out for a second, as if replaying a fond memory. Then sighs dramatically. Scarlet resists the urge to roll her eyes.
"Yes." He says. "It was a hell of a hustle. But she made me promise that I would stay with you until she can come back."
"I see." Scarlet breathes. "Thank you Theo." She smiles at him, her smile weak but warm because she means it. He looks like an OK guy.
"Am I free?" Theo asks
Scarlet gasps. "Oh God. Did I keep you? Do you have appointments? Oh God I'm so sorry Theo. You can go now I'm okay. Really. And thanks again."
"Am I free; of charges?" Theo clarifies, smirking.
"Oh." Scarlet flushes the colour of her name in the face.
"Of course." She chuckles, nervously tucking wayward strands of her brown hair behind her now red ears. When has she ever been shy?
Never.
"You didn't have to do this for me." She says. "Accidents are what they are. Accidents. No one plans them. I'm not going to and wouldn't have pressed charges either way."
"Phew!" Theo breathes, dramatically flopping back into his chair. This time Scarlet rolls her eyes. He really is melodramatic. But fun.
"Just so you know, I have strict orders from a certain little miss not to leave you alone. Not until she comes back anyway." He frowns. "So you're not getting rid of me. At least not yet." He smirks.
Scarlet flushes again and fumbles with her fingers for what to say next.
"I hope she did not scare you." She says, almost whispering. "Um...you know? She can be a mouthful some times. I'm so sorry and thank you so much."
She rests her head back on the pillows, breathing in the not-so-fresh air of the hospital air conditioning as she glances up the bare white ceiling. She feels, she doesn't know how she feels really. There's a certain need her body feels to get out of this bed even if she's really weak, it's as if she doesn't like being taken care of while laying in bed. She feels useless, weak.
Weak. The word stands out in her mind more than it normally should.
She doesn't like weak, right? Someone else in her life doesn't.
Though what intrigues Scarlet most is that everything in her mind, every clue her brain gives; the parts and pieces that should make up her life and memories, she isn't sure of. It's like she's speculating someone else's thoughts while watching them from the outside.
It must be the hospital effect. She needs to get out of this hell hole.
Doctor Strange had said he'd discharge her in a few hours but really, four hours is longer than a few hours. What's taking him so long? Although she feels okay in the stranger's company, Scarlet doesn't care for hospital environments.
"She wasn't scared." Theo says suddenly, breaking Scarlet from her train of thought.
"Hmmm?"
"Your daughter, she didn't cry."
"You said that."
"I did?"
"Yes." Scarlet giggles. What the hell? Since when do you giggle? Her nosy and uptight subconscious raises a perfectly plucked brow.
"Oh!" A masculine gasp escapes Theo's throat as he chuckles and blushes slightly.
Oh! Apparently, even gods themselves aren't immune to blushing!
"Well yes, as you can see, by some kind of miracle, there isn't a single wound or trace of an accident on your body, or scars for that matter. So there was really no cause for alarm to her. I just told her that you were resting." He shrugs.
"Oh!" Scarlet glances at her body and an "oh" escapes her lips when she sees it.
Her pale skin is crisp clean. Not washed-clean but I've-never-had-a-scratch-or-wound-in-my-life-clean. Too clean for someone who was in accident two days ago. Of which she stayed unconscious until today. She blinks up incredulously at the beautiful stranger sitting at her bedside.
He shrugs nonchalantly. What?! He shouldn't be shrugging!
This is serious.
No. Not serious. This is impossible! How come? What exactly happened? Her heart thrums loudly, the sound deafening Scarlet. She suddenly feels an urge in her gut to throw up the chicken caesar salad she'd so enjoyed earlier. The whiteness of the hospital room is becoming overwhelming.
She's is frightened.
Frightened of her own self.
A feeling of de javu washes over her, but she can't quite place a finger on why exactly.
But maybe the accident wasn't that serious. It was just a bike after all. Her subconscious quips, placing her index finger on a perfect red lower lip. Scarlet agrees. But then why would she have been out for two whole days?
The shock, it has to be.
She lifts her head to look at Theo again. His expression is nonchalant. Too nonchalant for her sanity. Does he know something she doesn't? Scarlet narrows her eyes at him. Theo's eyebrows rise in question. Then he shrugs, as if answering her unspoken question. He doesn't know how it happened either. Does he? Does he not?
"Was it serious?" She asks softly. Trying to obscure the panic in her voice. "Was the accident serious? I don't understand."
Theo pauses, as if thinking about it then, "No," he shrugs again. "I don't think so."
Scarlet lets out a relieved breath. Seriously, it could've been worse. For a moment there, she thought she might have a tissue regeneration ability. How stupid and X-men is that?
They stay there in a seemingly comfortable silence as her eyes become heavy again. My! How much is she going to fall prey to sleep until the cursed morphine is out of her system? Scarlet has no idea. But she really wants to stay awake. She never thought there would come a day when sleep was an unwelcome activity to her body. For she feels like she has always gotten less of it...There goes another speculation of her own life, something she's supposed to be well aware of. Does she even know herself?
This is maddening.
She asks Theo what time it is and he says it's three in the afternoon. Scarlet really hopes that the nanny, whoever she i---oh shit!
She groans inwardly, scanning her brain for the nanny's name and coming up with nothing.
This is unbelievable!
How does she not know her baby's nanny?
How's it possible?
And why doesn't she feel like Theo is telling the truth about something?
Scarlet groans inwardly again. Did she get amnesia? She hopes not. She knows certain things about herself dammit!
Sirens go off in her head as anxiety grows in Scarlet's stomach. She doesn't understand what's going on as she lets out a loud screech. Waking up a dozing Theo.
"Scarlet you okay?" Theo jumps.
"Yes!" She breathes, left hand gripping her head. "It's these on and off headaches. I'm okay it's gone, did I wake you?"
"No it's fine." He assures her with a small smirk, and readjusts her bed so she can sit upright.
....
"Mom!" Lea screeches, waking up her mother from another one of her naps, as they run into the room. When Scarlet glances around, Theo is not there. For a moment she wonders if he gave up and left after all.
Lea's with an older woman; the nanny, Scarlet imagines. She is seemingly in her late thirties, she has dark brown eyes with tiny wrinkles in the corners, a pale skin and coffee brown hair tied up in a torturously perfect neat bun, and another little blue eyed blonde girl around the same age as Lea. Both of whom Scarlet, much to her consternation, doesn't recognise. It is not possible that she's never met her housekeeper before. It's even laughable. She will have to talk to her doctor about it later. But for now, she needs not to show.
Scarlet and the older woman smile at each other. While hers is a bright really-happy-to-know-you're-okay smile, Scarlet's is another story; weak and confused.
"Honey!" Scarlet gasps as her daughter squeezes the life out of her lungs in what she thinks is a hug.
"Mommy you awake!"
"Yes princess. I am. How are you?" Scarlet grins at her precious girl, not even minding the pain shooting through her head while she does. Happiness blooms in her chest like flowers in spring and tears of joy prickle in her eyes. It's unbelievable that she isn't sure of anything in her head but the love she feels for the little girl. It comes so naturally in her heart, so real that Scarlet doesn't even for one second doubt it. She just can't believe how much she adores her.
"Mrs. Jake said if we ate all our carrots we'd find you awake! Yes!" The little girl screams, bouncing up and down the bed while the others watch with interest. The other little blonde joins her, so that they're both standing on either sides of her legs. Scarlet grins, she's happy. She can also see the adoration in the nanny's eyes. She feels mortified about her reception all of a sudden.
"Did she now?" She asks, responding to her daughter.
"Yes! Yes she did, and it worked! See Kay?" Lea screeches and the other little girl nods vigorously. For a moment, Scarlet is worried her head might pop off.
"Mrs. Jake, I can't thank you enough for taking care of the girls." Scarlet says warmly.
"It's okay ma'am. I love it. And besides it's my job." She gives her that professional but also genuine smile and Scarlet smiles back. This time it reaches her eyes. Instantly, she knows that she is close with the nanny despite not remembering her name. The conversation continues, Mrs. Jake settles in one of the two chairs inside while the girls sit beside Scarlet. Lea tells her what she and the little blonde; Karen did over the past two days, but more importantly, the part where they played in the tree house alone and Mrs. Jake was so mad at them so she didn't let them watch TV that night and they missed their tv show; Teen wolf. Scarlet is about to ask them whether they understand anything on the show when Lea claps her hands excitedly.
"Please mommy get well quick, we need to watch the rerun before the next episode."
"We do?" Scarlet asks sardonically. She can't put her mind around some things. As it is, she watches Teen wolf with her five year old daughter. The show doesn't sound alien in her head, watching it with Lea does.
"Yes we do!" Lea's getting angry at her mother's tone of voice. Scarlet is thinking of something to calm her down when Theo walks in, another paper bag in hand. Apparently, he didn't leave. He must have gone home for a change of clothes and some more food. He's now wearing a black wife beater that hugs his oh-so sexy muscles like a long lost friend, and black denim jeans with white converse. Scarlet wills herself not to drool in front of her daughter and Mrs. Jake. But she can't help checking him out.
"Hey Sunshine?" Theo greets, oblivious to the shameless ogling of a certain brunette in the room. A wide grin is plastered on his face as the faint blue behind his gray eyes twinkles brightly. It takes Scarlet a few seconds to register that he is not referring to her, but her daughter. But not before her face turns tomato like.
Fucking hell!
"Teddy!" Lea jumps from the bed, throwing herself into Theo's arms like they're the very best of buddies. She almost brings him with her to the ground.
"Leandra honey!" Scarlet scolds.
Lea scowls.
"What?" Her mother asks, not knowing what she's done wrong.
"I hate that name! I've told you mom!" She shouts, still in Theo's arms. She actually said mom, not mommy. Scarlet knows she's angry.
"But it's your name!" Scarlet says gently.
"No it's not!" Her daughter shouts as her dam breaks and tears roll down her small cheeks. "It's just my middle name. You promised you wouldn't call me Lea again!" She stomps her feet as Theo tries to calm her down.
"What is your name then?" The question is out of Scarlet's mouth before she can stop it. It comes out just as genuine as Scarlet has meant it that even if the listeners would have wanted to think it a joke, it most certainly doesn't sound like it.
She almost wishes she were joking but no.
Scarlet really doesn't know her daughter's first name.
