chapter 27
-
THE SCENE SPLAYED BEFORE ALEXANDRA almost made her drop to her knees in shock. The bloody mess on her sister's back made her furrow her thin blonde brows. When the baby vampire told her what happened, Alexandra didn't think she would walk into Fangtasia to see Bill and Eric confused and perturbed about the incident.
"Alexandra, you're here!" Bill exclaimed, standing up to greet Sookie's older sister with a pained frown. "I need you to try and see what happened, and what did this to her. I tried to give her my blood, but it didn't work." Bill softly placed a hand on her back, gently leading her over to the flat sofa he had laid the young telepath on.
Alexandra didn't have time to talk or look anywhere else except for Sookie's back. It was riddled with three large deep gashes that were filled with a white substance. She glanced up to Eric with wide eyes, gulping when the look in his eye told her everything she needed to know. She grabbed her sister's cold hand, clutching it close to her chest as she kneeled down. Alex let her eyes flutter shut and she let her brain do its job. Memories came flooding in, and Alexandra carefully picked them out. She clearly saw what Sookie had seen, and she was terrified.
Alex opened her eyes, lazily bringing her hand up to swipe at the blood that had unknowingly dropped from her nose, down onto her cupids bow. Eric was in front of her in a mere second, a cold, wet rag was pressed to her nose. He wiped the blood from her lip and her other hand.
It was to be nice and not shake her up even more, but also to keep Bill from smelling her raw blood. Eric knew it was stronger than Sookie's just by the way their scents differed. He was afraid if the young vampire got a sniff, he would've wanted more, regardless of who he loved.
"Don't over work yourself, you still aren't a hundred percent yet." He hummed lowly in her ear, she nodded softly. She let go of Sookie's hand and backed away, her knees still touching the freezing cold tiles.
"Guys, what I saw was impossible, right?" Alex questioned, "it was a monster. It's head was like a bull, but the body looked completely human. Except for the hands, they were claws. Like a fuckin' dragon." Her eyes glanced over at Bill who pursed his lips. She then craned her neck up to see Eric's face, but he was lost in thought.
That was, until three soft knocks came from the front door. Eric used his vampire speed to open the door, he leaned his head down to greet a short, old woman who was dressed up in a pair of light blue scrubs.
"Bill, Alexandra, this is Dr. Ludwig." He introduced the woman and Alex raised from her knees to a standing position. She held out her hand for the doctor to shake. Dr. Ludwig almost looked disgusted as she looked the blonde up and down, dismissing her with the roll of her eyes. Alex's face fell, along with her hand, which Eric took immediately. He guided her over to a short little loveseat that was big enough for the both of them to sit on.
"Just leave me alone and let me get down to business." She sighed, her voice clearly irritated. The doctor sat a large bag onto the floor and ripped it open. She slapped on blue latex gloves, and grabbed scissors, cutting the fabric of Sookie's shirt enough to see her deep wounds. Alex grimaced at her poor attitude, hoping that her medical skills would be worth it.
Sookie had regained a bit of consciousness while the doctor was working, and she raised her head slightly, "what kind of doctor are you?" She choked out, making Alex's head snap towards Sookie. Eric could feel Alex's rugged emotions. It made him feel abnormally human, and he wasn't sure he liked it. The discomfort was evident on his face, though he was hoping the snooping vampire in front of him wouldn't notice. His hand squeezed hers tightly, hoping to offer some comfort to relieve her emotions a bit so they weren't as strong in their bond.
"The healing kind. I'm Dr. Ludwig, what's your name?" She asked Sookie, harshly digging in her back. Sookie let out a terrifying scream and Alex's eyes widened, her protection instincts kicked in. She let go of Eric's hand, light spritzing from her palm. His eyes widened at her unbelieveable action and his hand wrapped around her wrist, lifting her up and dragging her from the sofa.
Alex yanked her hand away from Eric, giving him a glare. "She's hurting her, Eric." She chewed on the bottom of her lip, looking up at her boyfriend with watery eyes. Eric gulped, cupping her face and wiping away the tears that had dropped onto her cheeks. His fingers grabbed onto her golden locks and he gently pulled her close into his chest, shielding her from Sookie.
"She's fixing her." Eric whispered, "let her be." He caringly caressed the back of her head. She nodded into his chest and wrapped her arms tightly around him.
Eric wasn't afraid to show affection in front of anyone, in fact he craved it, so when Bill Compton furrowed his eyebrows at the couple, the Viking just waved it off. Another reason he pulled her away, besides the obvious injury Alex could've done to the doctor, was because of the dark haired vampire. He was obviously a little too curious in Alexandra and her different abilities. Eric didn't want him to see anymore than he had to.
"Sook-Sookie Stackhouse. Am I dying?" Sookie wheezed, practically coughing up a lung. Dr. Ludwig hummed, holding up her bloody fingers to reveal a heap of white poison she had carved from the telepath's back. Bill and Eric turned their noses up, while Alex was desperately trying to calm her nerves, keeping her nose tucked into his chest. The smell of mint and leather crowded her nose, and she loved it. Eric felt her heart rate slow as he rubbed tiny circles onto the side of her neck.
"Yes." The doctor answered in a monotone voice, tilting her head at the white gunk. Alex's grip around Eric's waist stiffened and he shushed her, placing a soft kiss onto the crown of her head.
"No! She cannot die, you will save her!" Bill growled, gripping Sookie's hand tightly. "Back off vampire, and let me do my job." Dr. Ludwig demanded, glaring at the dark headed vampire. Bill clenched his jaw shut, locking eyes with Eric.
"Forgive him, Bill is abnormally attached to this human." Eric replied, not breaking eye contact with Bill. Alex rolled her eyes, giving a loud sigh at Eric's human remark. He seemed to think she wasn't human herself and a part of her believed it.
"Like you aren't." Dr. Ludwig's eyes signaled to their embrace, "well we don't have a lot of options, she's been poisoned. Have you ever heard of Komodo dragons? Their mouths are teeming with bacteria. After one has bitten you, it will track you for hours, days, just waiting for the toxins to slowly eat away at your nervous system till you're good and helpless. Then, it will devour you alive."
"I was scratched by a dragon?" Sookie questioned, tears falling freely from her eyes.
"No, but this poison is similar but way more efficient. I think I've seen it before but it's hard to tell without testing, and we don't have that kind of time. Give us some privacy. I need to remove her clothing." Bill stood, whispering sweet nothings to Sookie before making his way into his sheriff's office. Eric let Alexandra pull back from him, leading her back into his office as well without taking a look at her sister.
Alex clung to Eric like a moth to a flame. Being close to him made most of her worries wash away, even if it was disturbing for Bill to watch her crawl into his lap as Eric sat at his desk.
Eric didn't seem to mind, almost like a second nature as his arms instinctively wrapped around the blondes waist. Alex let her head rest on his shoulder and play with the collar on his tracksuit top as he conversated with Bill. She couldn't help but think about if she had spent time with Sookie instead of going out with Hoyt, everything would have been fine.
It couldn't have been more than a minute or two before Pam and Chow entered the office. Alexandra saw Pam roll her eyes at her maker but she didn't have the energy to raise her head up and come up with a snarky comment to impress the blonde.
After Pam and Chow left, a scream echoed through the main room and Alexandra shot up. Dr. Ludwig yelled for help to hold her down and before she could run out of the office, Eric grabbed her hand. "Bill can handle it, you shouldn't have to see her like that." Alexandra chewed on the inside of her cheeks, nodding at Eric's words.
"Dr. Ludwig is an amazing doctor. I called the very best for your sister, she's going to be okay." Eric leaned down, placing a chaste kiss on her lips. Alex nodded, tucking her lips inside her mouth.
-
Sookie was completely healed and resting on the sofa she had been laying on for hours. Dr. Ludwig had left and Alexandra left Eric and Bill to talk while she walked to her car to grab her cigarettes. By the time she walked back to the front door, Eric was standing there with a small frown on his face. Alex grabbed her lighter, taking a long puff from the tobacco stick.
Eric didn't like that she smoked. He honestly found it unbecoming on everyone else, somehow she managed to make the disgusting trait attractive. It was a sick habit, one he remembered Pam having before she turned. Eric had mentioned something to Alex about smoking merely a week after she had gotten attacked and Alexandra said it helped to relieve her stress. He truly couldn't argue with that answer because he could feel her anxiety lower through their bond.
"Sookie almost died tonight and I was out drinking at Merlotte's. Y'know, it seems like almost every time she needs me I'm always busy getting drunk so I don't have to deal with my shitty psychic problems. I know the alcohol suppresses the visions and that's why I drink, but maybe I should stop? I'm borderline addicted." She blew smoke out of the side of her mouth, looking to her partner for a little bit of guidance.
Eric crossed his arms, "you should stop. I think it's time you embrace what you are. Godric has been alive twice as long as I have, I'm sure when we go to Dallas and find him, he will have some information. Maybe he will even know what you are." Alex flicked her cigarette butt into a tin metal bucket beside the door. She looked up at Eric, his eyes glowing in the light of the moon and stars.
"You really think so?" She let both of her hands work their way up his chest, going up to his shoulders. Eric swooped down and hummed at her question, he placed a tiny kiss on the scabbed over bite that she was sporting on her neck. Alex melted into the kiss, chills popping up on her skin from his soft lips and the cold breeze.
"Let me heal you, min blomma." Eric whispered right below her earlobe, pulling back to trace her bruised cheekbone. Alex quirked an eyebrow at the thought of his blood entering her once again. Sure, he had fed from her many times since they had made everything official, but Alexandra only had his blood once, and a few drops at most.
"Your sister is healed, it has to be your turn now. I know you still ache." His voice seemed like the only thing she needed to stay alive. Alex suppressed her urge to jump his bones in his own parking lot. She pulled back slightly, glancing up into his eyes. Her intuition was telling her to let it happen, she could tell it pained him to still see her skin a very light yellow with a dark purple sheen.
She nodded slowly, and his fangs made an appearance. Instead of biting his wrist like Bill had done for Sookie, Eric took a mouthful of his palm and bit down, letting Alexandra place her lips around his wounds. Alex could have moaned as she instantly remembered the taste of his blood as soon as it hit her tongue. The hint of metallic mixed into the hypnotical sweet and savory taste of his blood was just the cherry on top. Both of her hands went up to grasp his hand, keeping it in place. Eric watched as her bruises began to heal themselves, her skin became brighter, and her hair bounced back to life.
His mouth dropped open and his tongue traced over his fang with a wicked grin, getting slightly aroused as her tongue and lips danced across his palm. Eventually Eric pulled away, prying her from his hand with a gentle motion. Alexandra licked her lips and looked up at Eric with wide eyes.
-
Alexandra had a weak smile on her face as she looked over at Sam. She had been behind the bar, trying to reach Sookie for well over twenty minutes. It had been a few hours after sundown and she had wrote a note for her sister to call her, but it was obviously ignored.
Eric assured her before the sun rose that it was okay to go home and rest before going back to work. Bill also calmed her nerves by saying he would look after her, so Alexandra assumed everything would be fine.
After the failed attempts she was getting ready to give up before the ringing stopped and she heard her sister's voice on the other end of the phone saying a quiet greeting.
"Jesus Christ Sookie, I've been trying to call you for an hour and a half! I thought something happened to you, I've been having Arlene wait my tables so I could check on you. Are you okay, honey?" She let the phone rest between her shoulder and her head as she gave Arlene a thumbs up, making the redhead sigh in relief.
Sookie was silent for a moment, playing with the hem of her shirt to think of the correct way to word the situation. "Sorry, Alex. I was just helpin' Lafayette out of Eric's dungeon. Your boyfriend has been torturing him for weeks. He was shot in the leg, he can barley walk. There's bite marks all over him. I know you didn't want to believe Eric was a monster but, sometimes people just are."
The blonde furrowed her eyebrows and dropped her jaw slightly, trying to take in the full capacity of her sister's words. Before she could say anything to Sookie, the dial tone rang through her ears and she slowly dropped the phone down on the hook. She gulped and stumbled from behind the bar, not even seeing Sam walk up to her with a worried expression on his face.
"Did she finally answer you? Alex what happened? What's wrong?" His questions were swirling around in her head until she finally made eye contact with him. His hands were on her shoulders, gently shaking her to snap her from her distraught gaze.
"Sam, I gotta go. Please just let me go." Alex pushed past him, ignoring the eyes and whispers of all the customers. She went straight to Sam's office, ignoring the shouts from Sam joined by Arlene. She stuffed everything in her bag, taking her apron off and shoving it in her cubby. Before Sam or Arlene could blink Alexandra was already walking out of the back door and going to her car.
She slammed her car door, running to get past the people in front of the club. She blinked away the tears that were making their way to her eyes, and swung open his office door. Eric was sitting at his desk, looking down at his computer with a frown. He didn't meet Alexandra's eyes, or greet her at all, which told her that he had something to be guilty of.
"Tell me it ain't true. Please tell me that you didn't kidnap Lafayette, please tell me that Sookie was lyin'. Please." Alexandra yelled, slamming the door to his office shut. Eric stood, slowly walking over to her. She instinctively put her hands in front of her, silently warning him to stay back.
Alex's head was pounding and her heart was following in tow. She could feel her blood pumping through her own veins and she had to clench her fists so she wouldn't accidentally blast him, even though she wanted to.
"He was selling vampire blood, selling and soliciting himself in exchange for vials of our blood. It's a grave offense, any other vampire who had found out would've done much worse." Eric calmly stated, looking down at the blonde who had tears rolling from her baby blue eyes.
Eric was upset, of course. How could he not be? Sookie was prying into his employee's mind, and it cost him his whole relationship. He knew what Alex was feeling, as soon as she felt it. The car ride she had to take to get to him could've killed him. She was secretly blaming herself, the guilt they shared through the bond was enough to make it burst.
"How could you?" She yelled, getting ready to raise her fists to push him back when he grabbed her tightly, trying to calm her. "You didn't have to hurt him, I care about him Eric! I care about you, I don't know how you thought I wouldn't have found out!"
She ripped her hands from his grasp as her chest heaved up and down. "Why would you do this? I thought you loved me, I love you-I loved you. I can't even believe this is happening right now, Lafayette is laying in his house crippled and almost dead because of you." She made a disgusted face, backing away from the vampire in front of her. It was like she didn't recognize him. Maybe she was finally seeing what everyone else saw.
Eric's face was struck with guilt, and pain because he felt their souls shift. He knew she could feel it too, "I never meant to hurt you. I was going to release him before we flew to Dallas. I was going to heal him. If the Magister ever got wind me doing just that, he would have my fangs." He slowly explained calmly, while Alexandra paced before him.
"You know what, I can't even look at you right now. I need to go check on my friend. Eric, don't come see me." Alex sniffled, grabbing her purse she had unknowingly threw onto the ground. She made her way out of his office, ignoring the eyes of Pam and Chow who were gossiping at the bar.
Alex shut her driver's side door with so much force it shook the whole car. Eric's blood was racing through her veins and all she could feel was her enhanced anger. She hit her steering wheel, hard enough to make the hard plastic dent in slightly.
For the first time in a long time Alex was completely sober. All of her feelings and thoughts were crowded in her mind, she wanted to get rid of them so badly. She pushed the thoughts away as gravel flew behind her. She put her car in park as she had finally made it to Lafayette's house.
Multiple knocks on the door woke him up from his silent nap on the couch. Lafayette jumped, but quickly recovered, knowing that if it was indeed a vampire, they couldn't come in. He slowly drew himself to his feet, wincing in pain as he limped to the door. He peaked under the blinds to see Alexandra, staring straight at him. He mumbled a string of cuss words to himself and unlocked the door, a purse waiting on his lips when he came face to face with her.
"Oh my God," Alex let her hand go up to her mouth to cover the gasp that spilled past her lips. Lafayette looked awful, even though he was halfway covered with a colorful knitted quilt, she could still see the damage on his chest and neck. Her eyes trailed down to his bandaged up leg, and tears were brought to her eyes.
"Sookie should've kept her fuckin' mouth shut." He clenched his jaw and let out a cough, clearing his raspy voice. "I'm fine, hooker, I just wanna be alone. I don't want to make yo'self feel bad or nothin', but your fuckin' boyfriend and his friends already did enough damage. I don't need you comin' up in here and trying to sew my ass up." The dry humor didn't amuse the blonde at all, in fact it hurt her even more.
Alexandra bit her bottom lip enough to draw blood as she held in a slew of apologies. Lafayette must have noticed her watery eyes and unspoken guilt, "Al, I don't blame you. You was blindsided by a muh'fuckas beauty, it happens to the best of us. Now go on home and cry cause I don't need them salty tears all over my doorstep, baby." His sass was covering up his true hurt, which he spared the blonde from. She was beating herself up for it and he could tell.
-
Alexandra pulled into Bill's driveway, her eyebrows raising as she saw Hoyt's truck pull away with a loud roar. She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts before entering the household with a knock. Sookie and Bill were on the stairs when she entered, the two looked to her with pitiful glances. Sookie whispered something in Bill's ear and he stood up, giving a knowing smile to Alex before making his way up the stairs.
"Well, I am heartbroken, for the millionth time. I don't know what the hell I was thinkin', Sook." She spoke quietly, taking the vampires previous spot on the stairs. Sookie wrapped an arm around her older sister and squeezed her tightly.
"You weren't, but that's okay. You and Jason are just alike in that mindset. I was gonna tell you to meet us here to talk but I lost service on the phone. Bill was telling me that Eric had a thousand years to practice manipulation, that the whole thing was a trap-" Sookie started but Alexandra raised her head up and shook it slightly, "no, the love we had was real. I could feel the bond we had, it was like a big 'ole ball of love and energy. That ball just shattered an hour ago."
Sookie completely disagreed, but nodded along anyway. "I got roped into going to Dallas, thanks for tellin' me you were going by the way." Her lips pressed into a thin line as her sister shrugged. "I told Bill I didn't know if you were still going or not. I know you probably don't want to spend your first trip out of state with your ex-boyfriend." Sookie spoke softly, her finger going up to catch the tears that slowly dropped from Alex's eyes.
It felt like someone had taken a hammer to her heart when that sentence came out of her sister's mouth. Ex, as if Eric could even be compared to the last ones. He was the one, and she knew it in her heart of hearts. But, after this incident, she knew she could never be with a man-vampire who was capable of doing that to one of her best friends.
"I ain't lettin' you go by yourself, you won't have anyone there with you durin' the day. Plus, I already put vacation time in with Sam today. He wasn't too happy about it." Alex scoffed, but in the back of her mind she was thinking of one other reason her mind just wouldn't let her say. There was a strong possibility that Godric knew what she was, and maybe even Sookie. She wasn't going to get her sister's hopes up in case he didn't.
"Well I just can't wait to see his reaction when I tell him I'm gonna need a few days off." Sookie chuckled softly, playing with Alex's hair. "After this fuckin' trip is over I'm gonna start drinkin' again." She sniffled.
Sookie paused her nonchalant braiding for a moment to lean down to Alex, she scrunched her nose up, "I didn't know you stopped."
