chapter 14

-

AFTER THE FUNERAL ENDED and everyone went home, Alex had about two hours before dark. After she changed and got out of that ungodly dress and shoes, she walked down to the back of her house, seeing a good spot to look up at the sun.

It was her and Sookie's favorite past time, soaking in the sun with no worries in the world. When they would lay out in Adele's yard, she would come out and say, "You're fryin' like a fritter in a pan!" She missed that. She could just let her mind go blank and relax. She stretched a quilt out on the dry grass and laid down, shutting her eyes for a quick nap.

Alex wheezed, her eyes shot open and she flailed as a pair of hands connected to her neck. It was definitely not a vision. The tears in her eyes had stopped her from seeing who was on top of her, as well as her glasses being right beside her on the grass. As his hands were wrapped around her, Alex saw flashes of Dawn and Maudette laying dead. Shots of Adele in her kitchen entered Alex's mind and she gasped for air, tears escaping her eyes.

She could feel herself getting lightheaded, but Alex wasn't going down without a fight. She grasped his wrists, digging her fingernails into his skin, he hissed in pain. While keeping one hand on her throat, he raised up, sending a punch to her right cheekbone. Alexandra whimpered, and tried to push him away when a burning sensation left her fingertips, sending the blurry man back about 10 feet. Alex's eyebrows shot up to her hairline as she looked at her hands. A bright white light had just shot out of her hands.

She took a deep breath, and quickly grabbed her glasses. Alex jumped up off of the quit, running as fast as she could to get to her house. All she was hoping for was that Jason would be home, or by some miracle Eric would be there waiting for her even though the sun was still out.

She didn't look behind her until her back connected with the door, shutting it completely. Alex turned, locking both locks and she charged over to the hallway closet, grabbing a 9mm pistol that was hidden in the back. She knew that the sun would be down in no time when she saw the orange tint in the sky shining in through the windows.

She paced the floor, going back and forth between the kitchen and the living room. Alex's shoulders arched up everytime she heard the slightest noise. She didn't want to call anybody because she really couldn't explain anything, like how she got away.

It had been about 30 minutes since she had blasted away the intruder. She was still flipping her hands over trying to figure out what the hell had happened. The bruises on her neck were starting to show and the cut on her cheek from his fist had scabbed over.

A knock on the door startled her, making her jump and point the gun in the direction of the door. She looked through the curtains, only to see Eric outside with a panicked expression on his face. She dropped the gun on the side table and swiftly unlocked the door. She hastily ripped open the door and flung herself into his arms. Eric instantly grabbed her, pulling her close and cradling the back of her head.

After a minute or two, she pulled back, using the back of her hands to wipe her swollen eyes. Eric's eyes dropped down to her neck where the blue and yellow discoloration stood out the most. His hand traced it and she pulled back slightly, cringing. His gaze drifted up to her cheek and his face turned dark.

"He tried to kill me. Eric, it was him. I could feel his, his overwhelmin' urge to strangle me dead. He killed Dawn, he killed Gran." Alex gripped his thin black T-shirt, looking up at the vampire. His jaw was clenched and the veins in his neck were popping out slightly.

His fangs popped out, and he sniffed the air slightly. Alex could tell he was getting ready to vanish into the night to find whoever did it, but she couldn't have herself be alone. "Eric, please stay. Don't go! Please don't leave me." Alex wrapped her hands around his biceps and caught his glance. She looked up at him with pleading eyes and he stared for a moment. He retracted his fangs, and sucked in his cheeks, almost like he was fighting the urge to rip someone's throat out.

"I'm staying here until morning." Eric sharply said. Alex could hear the anger radiating from his tone and she let out a strangled breath. He grabbed her arm and pulled her in close, his hand rubbing circles on her back. His hand firmly pressed her lower back, and his feet shifted closer to her.

"Will you lay with me?" Alex didn't look up, she kept her face buried in his black T-shirt. Eric wrapped his arms tightly around her, "Of course." She led him to her bedroom, where she sprawled out on the bed. He plopped down beside her and wrapped his arms around her midsection, pulling her close.

Time had passed and Alex had nodded off a few times. She told Eric the whole story, even about the bright shiny light, which he didn't really comment on. Alex could tell he was curious about it, though. She eventually fell asleep once more, until her phone vibrated from her table. She raised up slowly, reaching over Eric to grab her phone. Her eyes went wide and she hopped up, throwing the blankets off and struggling to put her hair in a ponytail, almost falling in the process. "Shit!"

Hoyt had sent her a text, signaling that he was on his way.

"I forgot I have to meet a friend." Is all she said as she zipped to the bathroom, changing her clothes. Eric furrowed his eyebrows and sat up. "I'm sorry, it's just, he's probably gonna be here any minute." She slapped her thighs impatiently, waiting for him to get up out of her bed, but he stayed put with his hands behind his head and his legs crossed.

"A friend huh? Does this friend know that you are with me?" Eric smirked, his stance implying that he wasn't going anywhere.

Alex huffed, "Hoyt is my best friend. Not that kind of friend. I made plans with him earlier today, I forgot, my-my face! My neck!" She rushed over to the vanity mirror. Eric sighed, hopping up out of her bed. He clicked his tongue and pulled her hair back, revealing the dark bruise.

"My blood will heal it instantly." He hummed, leaning down, his nose going in the crook of her neck. Alex looked defeated, she was wondering if she should keep the marks to prove to Sheriff Dearborne that something actually happened, or if she should just Eric heal it.

"No, I can't. I'll explain to Hoyt what happened and have him take me to the police station." Eric's head tilted slightly and his head turned to the door. A truck was heard pulling up into her driveway and she sighed, grabbing her phone.

"As you wish." He lingered in front of her, grabbing ahold of her shoulders. Eric's lips were ever so gentle as he placed a light kiss on hers. She closed her eyes and leaned into the kiss, but she opened them, realizing he was gone. Her cheeks heated up and a blush made its way onto her face.

"Alex?" There was a knock on the door and Hoyt walked in, stuffing his hands in his jeans. Alex slowly stepped out of the bedroom, walking into the light of the kitchen. Hoyt smiled but his lips dropped into a frown when he saw the bruises on her neck.

"What the fuck?" He was in front of her in a second and he grabbed her shoulders, his thumbs running over the marks. She was silent, fighting the tears that were trying to make their way down her face. His gaze caught onto hers, "Alex? Come on, tell me what happened!"

"I think the person who killed Maudette, Dawn, and Gran tried to kill me." She looked up at him with tears in her eyes and Hoyt pulled her into his arms, tightly grabbing the back of her head. "I need you to take me to the Sheriff's department."
