Chasing Love
"Will you go to prom with me?" My girlfriend of two years was standing before me, hope on her face. Not knowing what to say, I stand frozen. Do I say yes and possibly have the whole school on us, ready to tear us apart? There's a chance they will accept us and our relationship. It's hard to say when there's no openly gay couples.
"Look, Sam...I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet. It's alot to think about and my parents don't know about us." Sam's smile slowly falls, sadness filling her eyes.
"We've been together for two years. We don't need their approval. Our love for each other is what matters most." I nodded in understanding, but still hesitate. "Sky, I'm not going to pressure you to say yes. It's ultimately your decision, but think about this. If you keep this relationship a secret, it's going to bear down on you when you want to show your love for me in public. I know you want to show how much you love me, but your fear of being negatively viewed by others is clouding your decisions. Don't let others define who you are. Only you can do that. Only you can choose who you want to be and who you love. There's nothing wrong with that. I'll pick you up for prom. We will go just as friends if you wish, just let me know before we get there, okay? I respect your decision either way." With that said, Sam gave me a kiss and left.
"She's not wrong you know." I jump, not realizing that my dad was home.
"How much did you hear?" My dad smiled.
"Everything. Sky, your mom and I love you. We only want what's best for you, and if that means showing your love for your girlfriend, go for it. I'll be here to support you and help when needed." I feel my heart warm with happiness. Why was I hiding this. Even if I wasn't accepted, Sam would have been there for me.
"Maybe, I should stop thinking about how others will look at me. It's my life! I don't need their approval."
"That's right! Now go that prom and show your pride." I hug my dad, tears trailing down my face.
"Thanks dad."
The rest of the week past, my nerves getting to me. I've been acting as I usually do, wanting to surprise Sam. This will be our first statement to the school. Friday comes along, with Prom. Sam picks me up and by the time were parked, she turns to me.
"So..." I breathe in and out slowly.
"Let's show our pride," I saidly with determination. Sam smiles wide, and we both leave.
Entering was nerve wracking. Eyes watched us as we walked hand in hand. It's more intense when we have our first dance.
"I love you," Sam says.
"I love you too." No matter what anyone thinks, Sam is who I love unconditionally.
