CHAPTER 5
The Clan stared at Ashkit in astonishment.
"B...but you're a kit!"Sootmouth objected.
"And you are a warrior,"Ashkit shrugged.
Bigkit couldn't believe what she was hearing. Ashkit murdered Fishripple?
"I've had training,"Sootmouth reminded the kit quietly.
"Ashkit,"Sharpstar took a deep breath, "You know about the prophecy, don't you?"
"Yes. I know that my birth killed four kits, blinded Spongestorm and after that my mother, Stormstripe, was killed,"
Bigkit wasn't listening. She was only aware of an argument forming behind her.
She burried her muzzle in her mother's soft fur, willing for her to wake up.
Please, Heatface! Please come back!
Although the fault wasn't her's, Bigkit couldn't help believing it was.
If only I'd gotten her to stay...If only we hadn't been born; then she would be on top of everything.
She let out a soft whine. None of her Clanmates seemed to hear her. She didn't realise that her Clanmates had left after a while, nor did she that it was already half way through the night.
☆☆☆
"Bigkit?"some cat whispered. Bigkit blinked open her eyes, vision blurry from sleep.
"Bigkit, you slept through the vigil," the tone was sterner now. When she glanced up she saw Pinktongue glaring at her.
"Wah?"
"You slept through the vigil,"she repeated.
"Who's- Oh!"with a pang of cold dread, Bigkit recalled the events of yesterday. She shuddered. Heatface is dead.
She let out a shrill wail as she saw her mother's limp shape in front of her. Desperately, she tried to inhale the last hints of milk and warmth, but lavender and death blocked her path.
She turned her head away, unwilling to look at her any longer.
"I'm sorry,"she whispered.
Pinktongue made no comment.
Beside her, Bigkit spotted Braidkit licking Heatface's tufty, brown ears.
While she watched, the elders emerged from their den, Treedot complaining about something.
Spongestorm, the blind elder sighed and set off towards Heatface's body.
"Hi, Bigkit,"she waved her tail as she purred a greeting,"We've come to bury Heatface,"
She instinctively ducked closer to her deceased mother, never wanting to let her go.
"No,"she meowed hoarsely,"You-you can't..."
Spongestorm let out out a murmur of sympathy then grasped the body in hrr jaws.
Bigkit gasped as she swung,"You're hurting her!"she protested feebly.
She followed them to the camp entrance where they dug a hole.
Once finished, they placed her inside. They begam to shower dirt over Heatface's body. With a screech, Bigkit dived in after her mother, clutching her as if she were her own kit.
"Come with me, Bigkit,"a male voice sounded above the growls of Treedot.
Sharpstar lifted Bigkit up by the scruff and she mewed in annoyance.
Before long, they were near enough the Carronplace for her to believe the stench could choke her.
"I'll be right back,"Sharpstar whispered. Briefly, she wondered were he was going. After a sudden shriek, her father returned with a sparrow in his jaws. Bigkit's mouth watered, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since the Clam meeting that had announced their assult on ThundetClan.
"Tuck in,"Sharpstar mrrowed, sensing her hunger. When she'd finished, there wasn't much left but feathers and bones.
"You were hungry,"her father commented.
"Yeah,"
Sharpstar was still for a moment, then he whispered: "I should never have taken her into battle,"
"You wanted what was best for ShadowClan,"Bigkit comforted.
"No. That's not why I took her,"
She shot him a puzzled stare,"Wh-What do you mean?"
"StarClan sent us both a sign. They said that Heatface would die in the allegiance with RiverClan. It was fate,"he meowed,"You were born that day,"
She blinked; there were so many questiins she wanted to ask but not enough words to do so.
