Run away

Written 2013 by VeGirl

When my phone rang with my mother's name on the display, shock ran through me like a mountain stream of ice cold water.

"Mother?" I said anxious, but in Swedish of course.

"Hi Sweetie, how are you? I haven't heard from you in days."

I had a hard time to grasp what was happening. "Hi mom, I'm fine." I said dubious.

"How's it going, have you seen any of those actors yet?"

"Actors?" I asked.

"Yeah, you told me you stayed an extra week to see them, right? It wasn't a boy, was it?" She was teasing me.

I laughed a tense laughter. "Here is definitely a boy involved." I confirmed.

"Well, I hope you're having the time of your life, and I'll see you soon."

What should I answer to that? "Of course I'll see you!" I lied and asked myself what my life would become from now on? I didn't even consider leaving this place, when I had worked for so long to get back here.

When we had ended our call I stood for a long time and just stared at the phone. Anna walked into the parlour, where I stood. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"No, but it felt like I spoke to one." I answered and told her about the weird phone call. "I haven't called to talk about some extended leave."

"My mother called me last week and said about the same thing."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I have no idea what's going on." Anna widened her eyes. "But I have an idea who might know something." She pulled her phone out and dialled Klaus.

"You have his number?" was all that came out of my mouth. She just gave me a surprised glare, before she started to talk to Klaus. I couldn't believe how much she was confiding in him, with everything that he'd been responsible for. I watched Anna's face intensely as she and Klaus discussed the possibility of a future call that we have missed yet.

Stefan walked into the parlour, and I took the opportunity to talk things through with him. "How have you've been doing with this whole Elena-Damon thing?" I put a comforting hand on his arm.

At first he got this protective shield air over him, but soon he relaxed. "It's been... hell; I even moved out from the house and she moved in." He noted how I flinched. "But then you showed up like Jack in the box, just the right time." He added quickly and a smile took place on his face.

"I went through hell, but it was only for two weeks."

"Two weeks?"

"Yeah, that's another part of this mystery..." We stood there, watching each other's confused and pained faces.

"I'm so glad you're back, Emma! For my sake but more for Damon's, he was a wreck!" We hugged each other, a warm friendly and confiding hug.

"Is it change-over in half time?" Elena's voice made us almost jump apart, but she had a confident, loving smile as she slid her arms around Stefan as soon as he and I was separated.

"No, I made my pick and I'm sticking to it." I said confident.

"Good!" She claimed. "I asked Anna if she wanted to go shopping with you and me."

I was a little taken aback from this one-eighty in attitude, but decided to just drop it and go with the flow. "Good, I guess she said yes." I smiled to Elena who had been my friend earlier and I was determined to make that happen again.

We took Elena's car to the Mall and walked around there randomly picking stores with alluring displays in the windows. I'd never seen Elena so upbeat or perky; that was always reserved for Caroline, who was the ultimate shopper-slash-party-planner.

"Elena?" Bonnie's voice caught our attention.

"Bonnie!" Elena hugged her friend. "I haven't seen you since you started to hang with Professor Shane." Elena teased her.

Bonnie flashed that gorgeous smile of hers that just lit up her face. "It's not like that, he's just teaching me to deal with the magic." She said, glancing around at Anna and me. "Emma, are you back?"

"Yup." I affirmed. "And this is Anna, my friend."

The two girls said hi, and then Bonnie turned to me again. "You just disappeared." She said in a questioning suspicious manner.

"Yeah, that was a mystery, and it turned out it had something to do with magic and Wiccan holidays; lug-something."

"Lughnasadh?" Bonnie asked.

"Yes, that's the ones!" Anna said. "That's the ones Klaus told us about."

"Klaus?" Bonnie sounded surprised and had this frown on her face as she said his name. "Why would he know anything about that?"

"Because he's like a gazillion years or something..." I chuckled.

"He's been helping us to get back." Anna had a sharp tone in her way to protect his actions, and ours for that matter.

"He doesn't help people, he uses them!" Bonnie snapped.

"That's not true, he's been helping us!" Anna defended him sharply.

"No he doesn't, he's using you, and you'll find out eventually."

I wondered who turned her bitter as she and Anna glared at each other. Elena had the best way to break the stare-down. "I haven't seen Caroline in a while."

"She's been busy helping Tyler deal with breaking sire-bonds to Klaus' hybrids and helping Stefan while you..." Her eyes flickered to me as the tone trailed off. I just shrugged my eyebrows in a way to let her know that I got the entire story. We stood there for a long awkward while.

"I think we should resume our shopping." Elena said.

"Yes, and stop trusting Klaus!" Bonnie said sharply. "It will turn out badly!"

Bitter and judgemental, I thought; is that what this Professor Shane is turning her into? I decided to ask Klaus what he knew about this guy.

Without further pleasantries Bonnie left us and we stood there looking confused at each other.

"Breaking sire-bonds? I think I'm gonna have a little chat with Caroline." Elena said thoughtfully.

"Yeah, but it doesn't work the same." I mumbled. "For you, I mean."

She looked bemused at me.

"Katherine!" I breathed startled as the girl suddenly appeared in the parlour. "What do you want?" My head was going on red alert in an instant.

She was pacing back and forth in the room on her high heels. "First I was only going to wait her out; what's another seventy years?" She had a sarcastic edge to her tone that I felt familiar with. "And then the stupid girl gets turned."

I didn't know what to say.

"And then it turns out perfectly when she jumped in bed with Damon, leaving Stefan to me, but what happens? You turn up, taking Damon away from Elena, and where does that leave me?"

"I... I'm..." What was I going to say; sorry?

"So... Either you just disappear again... or I can kill you." She had a smile on her face as if she had suggested coffee or tea instead of death or flee.

"Katherine..." Stefan sauntered in and acknowledged her with a bored tone. "That doesn't change a thing."

"Stefan!" She made her way over to him with the hips swaying suggestively and her lips pouting. "It is so good to see you again; I've missed you."

Stefan just sighed and I did my best to jumpstart my heart back in motion again.

"Katherine, leave Emma alone." He said in a patient tone.

She turned and looked at me and her smiled changed. "We can share her." She suggested and in a flash she stood behind me with an arm around my waist. "I hear she tastes delicious..." And then she bent over to smell my neck; something that made my blood run ice-cold.

Instantly Stefan stood in front of me. "Katherine I'm telling you to leave Emma out of this thing between you and me."

"You admit there is a thing between you and me." She giggled delighted as I was still pinned between these two vampires.

"Let Emma go, so we can discuss our relationship further." Stefan had suddenly his suggestive tone, making this situation feel like a ménage á trois in the making. He took Katherine's hand, the one that was snaked around my waist, and just spun her around as if they were dancing, and then I was free. Unfortunately my knees just buckled under me and I was in a heap on the floor.

"Hey love, are you here as audience?" Damon reached a hand to me and nodded towards Stefan who still had Katherine in a dance-like grip, even if it was something very different. Damon pulled me up in his arms and supported me as we walked out of the room. "Unless you wanna stay?" He teased.

"No thank you, I rather be far away from her." I answered grumpy and Damon chuckled.

Anna stayed in her old bedroom at the Boarding house for a couple of nights, but decided she wanted to go back to Klaus mansion. Frankly, Damon and I wanted to escape to his secret getaway; just chilling in front of the big fireplace all alone.

I accompanied her to Klaus'.

When Anna walked up to her room with her suitcase, I had Klaus to myself, I asked the question I hadn't mentioned during our race through Eastern Europe. "What happened between you and Caroline, Klaus?" He looked at me, reluctant to answer. "I mean I saw the two of you kissing." I pressed on.

He sighed. "There has been so much going on, crossing and double-crossing." He sighed again.

"Have you just given up?" I asked but he just looked at me. "With nothing but a kiss?" I couldn't believe this guy; he never gave up on anything.

"I had a close en encounter with her while I was in my Tyler-suite."

"Tailor suit, what's that; some werewolf thing?"

He hesitated for a while and then smiled wickedly. "No, I was using Tyler's body; a Tyler-suite."

"Oh, gross!"

Klaus laughed. "It's not like that."

I did my best to shake of the picture of Klaus wearing somebody else body, I saw it on TV when Klaus was using Alaric, but for some reason it felt much worse this time.

"Caroline threw herself at me, thinking I was Tyler." Klaus told me. "I had to stop her; it was the wrong place, wrong time and the wrong equipment." he added wry.

I glared at him with a frown.

He laughed. "I thought you'd be pleased that I didn't take advantage of the situation." He had that sparkling smile that made his eyes glisten and the dimples appear. "I have time to wear her down." He joked in his flirty way.

I just rolled my eyes.

"I try to stand idle by while Tyler screw everything up with that wolf girl, Hayley of his." I looked at him with a questioning face, but he just waved it off. "I'll step in when he has ruined everything, making me the hero and not the bad guy." He added with a smirk.

"Yes, that will be quite a change for you." I teased.

He just laughed and shook his head. "I will definitely kill you one of these days luv, and I'm going to enjoy it!" He had a wicked smile, which just made me laugh.

When Elena finally seemed to accept that I was back in their life, she, Anna and I took her car down to the Grill. Anna and I ordered something to eat, but Elena claimed she couldn't eat yet.

Perhaps Damon could tell her it was okay? I was getting a little annoyed with her baby-ways.

"Okay, that's your loss." I just said blatantly and took a big bite of the burger in front of me. During our race through Europe I had longed to sink my teeth in one of those burgers again.

Elena sighed deeply. "I remember how good it was when I was..."

Both Anna and I knew that she was about to say human, even if she cut the sentence short and started to look away. She looked back at us. "I miss it so damn much!" she exclaimed with tears in her eyes and Anna and I didn't know what say. All we knew was that Anna needed to be sacrificed.

My phone chimed, and surprised I saw Klaus' name on the display; I never remembered putting his number in my phone in the first place; I tapped the screen and answered a questioning. "Hello?"

"Mother has dropped by, you need to get away; you and Anna." He informed in a stressed voice.

"What?" I didn't get it. "Where would we go?"

"The only way to keep you safe would be to go to your world."

Huh?

I breathed in. "How would we be able to fend for ourselves in our world, I mean Kol had no trouble finding us there."

"You have to take Damon with you."

I didn't know what to say; Damon in Sweden? Everybody would think he was Ian Somerhalder; the actor.

"I think you two should get over here as soon as possible." Klaus voice had a serious edge to it, making me just obey.

I stood up even before I had ended the call. "Anna, we have to go, now!" I started to look around in the Grill. "Come on!" I did my best to make her hurry up.

Both Elena and Anna got up and we headed out through the door.

Elena drove us to our destination and then she headed home while Anna and I walked into the headquarter of the Alpha male of this town; of this world. By now we just knocked on the door and then stepped right in.

"Klaus!" I yelled.

"Oh do step right into my home!" He came to meet us with his usual sarcastic expression.

I ignored that. "You told us to come, and here we are."

"I did." He showed us into his sitting room where Amariya just walked in. "Here she is, the woman we need." He said and plopped down in an armchair and put his feet up on the ottoman in his trademark lounging style.

"Hi Amariya, please walk us through this." Anna said as we all took our seats on the couches.

"How would we get over there; I mean we had to go through the buzzing rock to get to Mystic Falls, can you get us all out?" I had so many questions this time.

"Yes, Amariya says there's a holiday, called Samhain closing in." Klaus explained.

"Sao-what?"

"Samhain." He sighed as to tell me I should pay attention.

"It's one of the big holidays and I think we can get you through." Amariya explained.

I looked doubtful at him and then at his sister, the expert. "Isn't there any other alternatives?"

"It's better than to let mother kill your friend, right?" He said tart and he was of course right; I definitely didn't want to sacrifice Anna.

"Fortunately Samhain is tonight, so we need to work fast to get ready." Klaus said with his smirk. "So pack your bags my lovelies, we're going on a trip."

* * * * *

Damon came into the room when I was going through my stuff and throwing a few necessities in a suitcase.

"You're leaving me?" He sounded incredibly hurt.

"Oh darling, you have to come with me; I'm not leaving without you." I was very persistent, and the thought of him rejecting me never even occurred to me. "I can't do this without you again." I tried to explain everything that had happened, and I showed him that I had packed some of his stuff as well.

"And you're sure you can't be safe here?"

"I'm not sure about anything" I said. "But Klaus says his mother is on our heels and that the four of us need to get the hell out of here."

"Klaus is coming with us?"

"Yes, he knows his mother best and he said that if we had the two of you with us, there was no problem in keeping Anna safe." I explained.

"Of course, but isn't there somebody else to come with us, to keep us safe?"

"I actually rather have Klaus on the same side, than at a distance where I know what he's up to."

"I'm having a hard time to trust this guy."

"He was our only safety on our last getaway, and we're still alive." I knew that was a really strong argument in the rate people died in this town and in his company.

"Okay, when do we leave?"

"I'm done in five minutes, then we leave for Klaus' mansion; Amariya will meet us there." I instructed and resumed the packing. Within minutes we were in Damon's car with a bag packed, ready to go.

The black Ferrari didn't hold that much luggage, but we only had a bag each as we raced to the Michaelson mansion.

"Could you please teach her some civil courtesy?" Klaus asked Damon as I once again barged in through the door of his home.

"I can't promise anything." Damon said tart and followed me into the sitting room where I hugged Anna and sat down next to her on the couch.

"Could we get on the flight first, and then step into the rock in Sweden; the one we told you about?"

Amariya looked at me with a confused look on her face. "Perhaps you can, but if we do it here and now, I can guide you through it."

That seemed to be a strong argument to get this over and done with so I just shrugged my eyebrows and rolled my closed eyes in the way Stefan always does.

"Wait a minute; when we get on the other side; will we recognize each other?" Damon asked alarmed.

"I will at least know you, since I knew you before we met." I was sure. "But what if you don't know me?" I added worriedly.

"Oh, come on! Stop being so melodramatic! Yes you will know each other, can we go now? I'd like for us to get through this keyhole before mother expose us and before this opportunity is over." He added, looking up in the sky in direction of the soon rising sun.

Damon gripped my hand and then we both nodded.

Klaus helped Amariya set up everything as she did last time and Anna, Damon and I did our best to prepare. Klaus joined us and we all nodded to make the leap.

"Wait a minute, will we transfer to another time again?" I said when we were just about to step up to the humming rock.

"I'm not sure." Amariya said. "But it's likely, that you'll end up in Yule."

"Where's that?" Damon hadn't really cached on this whole time-travelling business.

"Not where; when!" I corrected. "Christmas?" I asked and explained that the Swedish name for Christmas is 'Jul', frighteningly alike.

Amariya smiled. "That is when the sun is at its lowest point; in December."

"Winter solstice?"

She smiled. "Are you ready?"

Klaus, Anna, Damon and I nodded and then it was time to step into the inferno of thoughts and impressions that looked so peaceful from the outside. The last thing I remembered was the iron grip Damon held around my wrist when darkness swept us away.
