He's back

Written 2013 by VeGirl

It was barely more than a week after when Klaus returned to town, that things were getting strained again. One day he just sat in our lounge with his feet on our coffee table. "Hello luv."

"Klaus." I jumped slightly. "You're back!" I faked a smile and thought about how obvious my accelerating beating heart was even if it was a silent vampire-heart. "So Klaus, what were you doing in Magyrors... Hungary."

Klaus laughed softly. "Magyarorszag luv, is that so hard to say?" He chuckled and said a few lines in Hungarian which I of course didn't understand a single syllable of.

"Show off!" I muttered.

Klaus laughed right out. "Look who's talking; the girl who were getting bitten by a werewolf just because she was showing off."

I realized I couldn't really retort anything to that, so I let it drop. "What were you doing there?"

"In Magyarorszag? Why on earth would I tell you?"

"Are we back, plotting to take over the world again?"

"Take over? I'm already king of this world, head of the food chain..." He smirked, making me roll my eyes at him again, perhaps Rebekah and Kol was right to take him down a notch. "I was just popping in to see an old friend of mine." He said.

"An old friend?" I asked intrigued.

He laughed. "Didn't anyone tell you what curiosity did to the cat?"

"No, I think I missed that one..."

Klaus laughed. "Yes, Countess Bathory is older that you, love." He informed me with those gorgeous dimples visible.

Excitement filled me instantly I wanted to know more and I totally forgot what I was trying to deflect. "Countess, who is she?"

"My, my; aren't you a nosy one?" He teased and the he just sighed. "What can I say, I got to know her in the sixteen hundreds and we had a few benders..." He shrugged and took a sip of the whiskey standing in front of him.

"Fine, don't tell me." I said terse and decided to move on. "When are you going to court Caroline in a proper manner?"

He froze for a sec at the mentioning of Caroline's name. "Like the sixteen hundreds gentleman or the Viking?" He wondered with a voice that suddenly was teasingly ominous again, and I was once again amazed by his ability to change mood with a flip of a coin.

I smiled. "What do you think will work out best?"

We were doing our best to evaluating each other, when his expression changed. "So, care to tell me why I have a new lock on my house?" He looked expectantly at me.

I did my best not to swallow loudly. "Isn't that a matter for the sheriff?"

He shrugged his eyebrows slowly and made a blatant face. "I find it much more effective to go straight to the source."

In a blink of an eye he had my arm pinned up behind my back in some freaking police grip and he was about to push me out the door when Damon came down the stairs.

"Whoa; what are you doing?"

"I'm just gonna borrow this little burglar for now." Klaus said between his teeth, pushed me out to his car and opened the passenger door for me to get in.

He got seated behind the wheel. "Anna sends her love, by the way." He said tart when he took off with me in sheer panic.

The surprise made me forget the fear for a fraction. "Have you seen Anna?" I asked surprised, and he just nodded. "You've been in Sweden?" I just stared at him while he kept steering the car to his house. "But Klaus, I haven't done anything!" It wasn't a particular good defence speech, but it covered the basics.

"You got invited into my house."

I couldn't deny that, so I stayed quiet. "You mean Anna's house." I muttered to myself, looking out the side window so I couldn't see the raging man by my side. I was wondering what he was going to do to me for tricking Anna to get me inside and dreaded any of the alternative scenarios.

When we arrived at Klaus mansion, Damon was already there jerking my door open and wrapping his arms around me. Klaus took a grip on the back of my neck. "She's coming with me, you can stay here." His tone of voice was harsh and he just motioned with his head for me to follow.

I had no choice but to come.

If I hadn't come he just would have forced me, so I trotted beside him to the front door with my neck in his iron-grip.

"Do you know what happened to the last the one's that plotted against me?" He pushed me away from him when we got inside the door. "They lost their head." He said as he walked after me into the parlour with his mouth pressed into a thin line and his eyes stone cold. He walked straight up to the liquor table and poured himself a whiskey which he gulped down.

"What, me; I haven't plotted to kill you." I was defensive. "Why would I want to kill you, you have saved my life in more times than anyone... well, except Damon..."

His angry face subsided slightly. "But the bottle with Anna's blood; the cure, is gone, and you are the only one with an invitation to this house."

"Yes." I said shortly, making him a little puzzled. "Yes I took it, so Kol wouldn't threaten to take Anna again."

"Kol?"

"Yes, was Rebekah the one who pulled the dagger out of him?"

He looked confused at me. "I wasn't even aware that Rebekah was out." He muttered.

"Yeah well... I think April was the one to de-dagger your sister." I muttered. "They are in cahoots..."

Klaus just looked unseeingly ahead, apparently to ponder options or contemplating the latest turn of events.

"Why do you suspect me; couldn't it have been anybody else, a human to come in here taking your stuff?" I muttered totally trying to deflect.

He glared at me. "Who else could it be; my cellar reeks of your blood, what did you do; fall on your face while you stole the cure?"

My eyes got huge. "What?" I thought I had been careful. "I... I..." How would he react to my betrayal?

Klaus lounged back in an armchair with his legs over the armrest and his eyebrows high up, pinning me with those blue eyes, demanding an explanation.

I took a deep breath. "I... I didn't give him the cure."

Klaus mouth fell open in surprise. "Come again?"

"I didn't give him the cure. I cut myself and poured it into a bottle I found so he wouldn't be able to do to you what he planned." I admitted shameful, letting my shoulders slump forward.

I don't think I have ever seen Klaus that surprised. "You double-crossed Kol?" He sat upright staring at me. But then he thought of the cure and anger coloured his face again. "Where did you take it then?" He pressed his mouth into a thin line. "The bleeding bottle is gone."

"I just put it in the other room downstairs." I admitted weakly, feeling like a little schoolgirl being chastised by the principal. "I figured it be safe here where no one could get in." I muttered.

He looked at me defiantly, not believing a word.

"Come!" I ordered soft and walked through his house with him behind me. It was easier to find the back entrance and laundry room than I thought and I just walked down the stairs. The storage-room where I had found the bottle in the first place was ahead on the left side and I went right, straight up to the little chest. I opened it, moved the fabric I had found and lifted the old bottle and handed it to him. "Here it is."

He just looked at the bottle and then up at me as if he still couldn't believe any of it. "You really left it for me?"

"Of course, it wasn't mine... and I certainly wasn't going to give it to Kol."

He kept staring incredulous at me and I started to feel like I had grown an extra head or something. "What?" I asked annoyed. "You think you're the big bad, but Kol is a freaking lunatic." I growled.

"Emma?" I heard Damon yell from the back of the house in a worried tone.

"Yeah, I'm fine!" I called back, turned back towards Klaus and took a deep breath. "I better go out to him. Take care Klaus, and don't spend it all on one vamp." I said in a poor attempt of a joke, nodding towards the bottle in his hand. After that I just turned and walked out of the house to Damon who wrapped me in his arms.

"I'm fine." I reassured him. "Are you okay?"

He kissed my forehead. "Yeah, now I am."

"Emma?" Klaus voice from the doorway made us both turn and I felt Damon get defensive next to me. "Thank you." Klaus said soft and awestruck.

I flashed him a smile. "You're welcome." I took Damon's hand, interlocked our fingers and then we walked back home to the Boarding house.

We got a bit when Damon looked peculiar at me. "Did I hear correct that you tricked Kol and didn't give him the right bottle?" He seemed totally blown away by this info.

"I couldn't bloody much give him the right one, could I? I could risk that you'd get killed."

He looked at me with his eyebrows pressed hard together. "I don't know what I would do if you get killed." His voice was thick and hard and his eye showed so much pain that it was hard to fathom.

I couldn't help but to think about how one minute he could be the big strong protector and bodyguard and the next minute he was just a little boy, scared of being alone. Once again I wondered how his earlier years had been and how his relationship with his father had changed when his mother died. Right now was not the time to talk about that though, I could see that in his eyes. "Klaus wouldn't do anything to me; I have him wrapped around my little finger." I said with a cocky smile, knowing that I most certainly didn't. "I was more scared for you to get hurt."

"If I die due to some original being wasted, then you die, Sweetie." He said slowly and I actually felt relieved. "At least that's a match." He kissed my forehead and kept one arm around my neck. "There's so much I want to do with you until then; places to go to, things to see."

I beamed up at him as he looked down at me with his eyes glistening with pride. "I'd really like that. Can we go to Italy; I'd love to hear you speak Italian." There was a shiver tingling down my back. "Please tell me you speak Italian."

"Naturalmente." He said sly putting a big grin on my face.

"Rebekah!" I yelped.

"Not the reaction I was aiming for, but if you're up for it..." He had the seductive look on, but I didn't even comment that.

"I have to call Becca to see if she knows that Kol took the damn thing." I snatched the phone from my pocket and dialled her. It felt like half an eternity before she answered. "Is Kol with you?"

"Well, hello Em'."

"Yeah, yeah... Did he leave? Did he give you the bottle?"

"He said you couldn't find it." She sounded surprised.

"I knew it!" I snapped.

"Emma, do you care to explain?"

"Gladly... As long as Kol's not around." I said, and as soon as I'm allowed to have my bodyguard with me, I thought.

"No, he left when you didn't give him the cure." Her tone was terse.

"Good, can we stop by?" I asked, not really listening after an answer, but pulling Damon along and showing up outside her house three seconds later.

"Bec's!" I called and she answered the door with an expression of equal amounts of surprise and annoyance. Everything turned into surprise when I hugged her.

"What's going on?" She asked.

"He hasn't done anything to you?" I asked actually a little worried for her sake.

"No, he just left." She looked around outside and then she motioned with her head. "Get in!"

I felt irritation run through me. "Welcome in, you mean." My voice was terse but she just rolled her eyes.

"So there is a cure and you had it in your hand." She asked when we sat down in her lounge.

"Yes, and I don't really know why, but I didn't want to give it to Kol, I had a feeling that he would double-cross us." I told her how I had hid it and how mad Klaus had been until I showed him where I hid it. "He didn't believe it until he saw it with his own eyes."

"Well he's been double-crossed a lot, and he went through a lot when we were kids." Rebekah explained thoughtful.

"Then suddenly he was grateful and said thank you."

She raised her eyebrows. "Nik said thank you? You must really have him under your spell."
