Coming out

Written 2013 by VeGirl

Two days later we walked past a TV down in the hotel lounge when a feature on MTV was shown that made us stop and stare. "The tremendously popular show 'the Vampire Diaries' which was mysteriously closed has got new clues. The popular guys playing Damon and Klaus have been seen in Malmoe in southern Sweden."

We looked between us and around to see if anyone else had noticed. If others had spotted us, then wouldn't Esther be able to do that pretty quick?

"What shall we do?" Anna hissed.

Klaus sighed. "Well, we have two alternatives; one, get out of here unnoticed, and the other are to play along, make a statement and then get out of here."

I thought about it and realised that if we made a commotion, people would know we were here and then we could make some distance between these characters and the real us to hide from Esther. "But how can we get away if we're not under the radar anymore?"

Klaus studied me intense. "Another leap in time."

My mouth fell open. "Are you kidding me? What is this; some freaking clicker, going fast forward all the time, or are you thinking of pressing the rewind button this time?"

The other started to look around in this lobby to see if anyone noticed my loud outburst. I felt a hard grip on my shoulder as Klaus pulled me closer to his face. "Would you rather that my mother kills your friend?" He hissed and I gasped. "I'm not on this vacation with you just to enjoy your company, luv."

I was reminded of the reason why we were here in the first place, and I had no more objections. "Sorry." I mumbled, and he released the grip he had on me. "I'm just worried I'll be old before we're done here." I muttered.

"I can fix that." He said and the devious smirk was back on his face as he reached his wrist toward his mouth with a questioning look.

Anna gasped and Damon took a protective grip around my shoulders. "Let's go through our options again now shall we?" He suggested in a calm way. "Somewhere more private perhaps?"

There was a new pub in town where we sat down in a quiet booth.

"If you 'come out' here." I made air quotes with my fingers to emphasize the double meaning to the phrase. "We'd blow our cover and any way for Anna to come home in the future will be ruined."

Anna whipped her attention to me. "What about you?"

"Oh, I'm staying in Mystic Falls!" I stated determant.

Anna just stared at me. "Really, you would abandon me?"

"Let's focus on not getting you killed, okay?" I snapped to my shocked friend.

The fact of the matter was that she had family here, while I had no biological ancestors. However much I loved my foster-family, they were not my blood relatives. I had Damon and that was all that mattered.

"If we've been detected, we need to get out of here again, but we can make a smoke screen by getting noticed." Damon was suddenly the one in charge of the operation at hand and started to make up different scenarios.

After having tried several of the establishment's finest single malts, the guy's that is, we had agreed on taking a very official flight from Malmoe to Stockholm after an anonymous phone call to the press. We hoped that it would make enough commotion to attract attention over to Mystic Falls. When Ester or her entourage would get here, we'd be long gone; preferably back home in Mystic Falls.

"To a good plan!" Klaus raised his glass with a satisfied smile on his face; it was one of his genuine ones that made the dimples appear. We all drank to that.

"Didn't I tell you once that I'd be a better wingman than my brother?" Damon asked Klaus whose expression darkened, even if the smile remained.

"Yes, I believe that was when I threatened to kill you; right?" Klaus asked, holding a toothpick with a questioning face.

"Come on you guys, we've passed that; common goal here now, remember?" I did my best to break the tension.

"Yeah, keep Anna alive, remember?" Anna said tart.

"Yes, sorry luv." Klaus said, put his arm around her and kissed her temple.

Damon and I raised our eyebrows in surprise. What, had they hooked up? They looked at our surprised faces and then at each other. Klaus pulled a strand of Anna's hair behind her ear affectionately, smiling and I think my mouth fell open in surprise. How could I have missed this chain of events?

Anna put her hand on Klaus chest and stroked it, while she smiled cheeky at him through her eyelashes. The two of them turned and laughed at us. "You should see yourselves!" Anna exclaimed laughing and then she rolled her eyes. "Would it be such a shock?"

I exhaled and turned my face into a grim grimace. "Well, you have been swooning over him in front of our TV."

She laughed, and Klaus looked as if this was totally new info. "Yes, and if we hook up, it'll be our business." Klaus stated. They looked at each other from the corners of their eyes and Anna nudged him with her shoulder, while he smiled.

Oh, my God! They had hooked up, and she hadn't told me! What kind of friend was she?

As the guys resumed the conversation, Klaus arm remained around Anna's back and finally she gave me a secret smile, which I returned.

"Girls, could you be a little more subtle?" Klaus asked, staring at us. "It's not like... true love." Klaus said with a frown towards Anna.

She returned it. "No, you weren't that good." Anna teased him, making Damon and me gasp.

"Oh, those moans were complaints, then?" Klaus asked in a teasing manner and Anna laughed. "I'm good and you know it!" He teased.

Damon and I just sat there almost not breathing, watching this being played before us. Then suddenly Damon turned to me. "I'm sorry that I don't have a mother alive to introduce you to." He said in a very obvious tone of voice that interrupted the playfulness on the other side of the table. "Didn't you have a thing for Caroline, or did she just reject you too many times?"

Klaus instantly removed his arm from Anna, who embarrassed looked away. "That's a different life." Klaus mumbled.

As if he had made his statement made, he didn't even looked smug. "If we're going to make an impression, we have to do it big!" Damon claimed, totally ignoring the present conversation to focus ahead.

To create the ultimate smoke-screen, we made anonymous phone calls to the media right before we took a flight to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. When we stepped out through the doors at the arrival hall, photographers were lighting up the night sky and fans were screaming. Klaus were using his charming flirty smile, and Damon was revelling in the attention. The guys waved, and even signed autographs on our way to the cab.

Hotel rooms were booked and we got the royal treatment when we arrived; people were bending backwards to please us.

"I could live like this..." I mumbled to Damon in the elevator up to our suite.

"Yeah, this isn't half bad." He replied with a smirk, snaking an arm around my waist to pull me closer.

Our rooms turned out to be a suite with two separate bedrooms attached and it was beautiful. I didn't want to think about what this party would cost or what this trip had cost so far, nobody had mentioned any sums for me to pay; I just assumed everything was on Klaus account and I prayed to God that I wouldn't owe him anything for him to collect later. I neither had the money nor the stomach to master that. I figured the best way to deal with this was to just ignore it and enjoy life.

And enjoyed it, was just what we did! Anna and I had the time of our life; everybody treated us like royalties.

Anna and Klaus snook off to the national archive for genealogy when we now were in the capital of this country. They needed to find out more about the disappearing and reappearing of people in Anna's past. Earlier in life I had thought that everything had a natural explanation, but I've had to re-evaluate my whole life during these last six months.

Vampires had no natural explanation!

We hadn't been in town more than two days, when suddenly people started to call, asking the guys for interviews, and I noted after a while that all those calls went to a separate phone.

"I don't give my phone number to anybody." He smirked.

"I have it!" I said smug.

"Just so you can call me to brag to your friends." He said, making me feel a bit stupid, but if you were friends with Klaus, wouldn't you brag about it?

The day when they had a television interview, Anna and I were so much more nervous than the guys were. My pulse was beating wild when they were called on stage, and Anna and I grabbed each other's hands, standing in the side lines.

The guys just waved to the studio audience who were making deafening sounds and plopping down on the couch beside the hosts. "It's amazing to have you here, since the show was taken off air, all of you just disappeared and have been impossible to get hold of."

"Yeah, we're actually private."

"But why would they pull you off air, a show with that magnitude?"

"The production company got into trouble, and a lot of the recorded materials got lost." Damon answered. "I even heard of a fire." He lied, very aware of the part his brother played in the decapitation of the ones responsible.

"We're actually looking for location sights, to get a whole new twist on this story." Klaus answered.

"Is there anything you can share with your fans?"

Huge smiles formed on their faces. "Unfortunately not, but it's heading a whole new path." Klaus answered.

"But why Sweden?"

"Does anybody know where Klaus was from in the beginning of time?"

"I'm not that old!" Klaus interrupted glaring, making Damon smirk.

"Yes, you are."

The reporter laughed at their pretended playfulness. "It's easy to see that you are friends off set and not always mortal enemies."

"Yes, we're good friends."

Anna and I were still holding our breath, convinced that anything and everything would go wrong.

"Allegedly my character; Klaus, is from this part from the beginning, so that is why we needed to find out a little more about Sweden."

"That was interesting to hear, and how do you like it so far?"

"It has come a long way since I lived here in the first millennium." Klaus said with a cheeky smile, and I nearly passed out; the reporter laughed out loud, and the audience roared. After a few more questions, the reporter ended the interview, the audience cheered as the guys waved and then left. We had to keep up appearances until we left the building.

"When you lived here in the first millennium?" I growled through clenched teeth.

"Where's your humour, luv?" Klaus' eyes glistened with humour. "For the first time I was completely honest."

You can't argue with that, can you?

We revelled in the fame and fortune, or at least in the image of it and were accompanied by screaming girls and clicking photographers at every dinner or social outing. Finally I felt like staying inside the whole time, and there were a few times that Klaus took Anna with him, leaving Damon and me for some delightful alone-time.

"I wish we were at your house by the lake." I mumbled between kisses. "I wish we could just go home and stay there."

"I know baby, me too." He wrapped me in his arms.

I looked up at him. "Will you turn me when we get home?"

Instantly he got a pained expression on his face and sighed deeply. "I can't do that baby."

"Why?"

"What if you get sired? I can't risk that!" He whined. "First I did it to Charlotte, and the Elena, what if I do that to you?" He looked like he was about to either cry or punch something.

"What are you talking about?"

"You'd have to do anything I tell you..."

"I thought you'd like that..." I joked.

"This isn't a joke!" He got up from the couch, still with the frustrated, almost painful expression on. "You know I'm a selfish jerk."

"Stop it!"

"No, you stop and listen!" He paced back and forth for a while. "I turned this girl, Charlotte; I know it was a bad idea but... I couldn't say anything to her, she followed my slightest whim." He just stopped and looked at me with those pain-filled eyes.

"You're afraid I'll obey you?" I felt confused.

"Finally I got fed up with her and..." He made a gesture with his hand "...told her to go count all the bricks in some building block and I'd come get her." He sighed. "Steff and I got there now when you went away, and there she was, still counting the bricks; thirty years later!" I had never seen him express guilt like that; he always hid that part of him.

"You would never do that to me." I was certain.

He looked at me as if I had hit my head hard on something. "But I would never know if you loved me!" He finally exclaimed frustrated and slumped down on the couch next to me.

I held my breath there for a moment. "Damon, I love you." I said seriously and grabbed him by the shirt. "Isn't that obvious?"

He placed his hands on either side of my face. "Emma, I love you, but I will always need to know that it's true; that this is your own free will."

We both let that marinate for a while, then I couldn't stay silent anymore. "I just don't want to leave you again." My voice was silent and much weaker than I intended.

He kissed me with all the longing and frustration we had both experienced during these last six months. "I want it to be your choice to stay with me." He mumbled in between kisses.

"It is!" I said. "I want you and nobody else." I mumbled. "We'll work around this..."

He swept me into his arms and carried me to our bed where we let the passion sweep us away into oblivion. We both needed to be in a state where nothing but our feelings mattered, where the pain of our past and the worry of our future ceased to exist.

* * * * *

With this new revelation between us, it seemed harder to deal with all the screaming fans and paparazzi around all the time. More usual, Damon put his arm around me protectively and we tried to dodge the people, or just stay in our hotel room.

One night we managed to undetected find our way to some minor restaurant and it was such a relief. We could actually have a meal just the four of us, almost like ordinary people; that is if you see past the fact that two of us preferred two legged value meals at ninety eight point six.

"I love your outfit tonight." Damon said appreciatively when Anna and I slid back to our booth after a visit to the girls room.

I smiled, looking down on my slim black jeans and white shirt. "I love your jeans, you usually don't wear that slim jeans." I replied.

"Well..." He smiled, arched an eyebrow. "I'm supposed to be someone else here."

"You're hot either way." I mumbled.

"And you're... delicious." He was spreading the flirty tone wide and I laughed to hide the beating pulse.

We tried to talk trough the usual topics, of what possibly was going on at home with our siblings, what Klaus and Anna had figured out, and when Esther would show her face again. At the end of that meal, people around had noticed us, tried at first to discretely take pictures with their phones and finally the word was out and we noted paparazzi outside and people started approaching us with requests of autographs.

Klaus grabbed one of the waiters. "Is there a back door to this place?"

By the way the guy stood very still and answered in a monotone voice I could tell that Klaus was using his persuasive abilities. "Yes, it's over here." The guy showed us and we were out of the place in no time. There we ended up in some back alley that the movie business gladly would use in a rape or murder scene, I didn't even think we had that kind of shady parts of this town.

Luckily Anna and I were safe as houses in this company.

Fairly quickly we got out of that back alley and walked in the opposite direction from the restaurant entrance where the press and fans were reaching hysteric measures. There was a subway station not far from our destination and as soon as we were at a safe distance Anna and I giggled like crazy.

"Have you ever been so sought after?" I giggled, but happened to meet Klaus eyes. "Oh, I guess you have... But perhaps not for autographs?" I kept giggling as we took the longest moving staircase I had ever seen, taking us further and further down towards the subway platform deep inside the mountain under the town.

"Perhaps not for autographs..." He admitted with a smirk.

"Would you two please stop talking so much about killings?" Anna growled.

Klaus just laughed. "We were talking about autographs, luv!" He pulled her against him as we reached the platform level and saw the train standing with the doors open.

We hurried over to the train but before we reached the doors, they closed and the train rolled away. We just missed the train and had to wait for another twenty minutes.

"Bollocks!" Klaus barked.

"Bollocks? How lame curse words do you have in Britain?" Anna teased him.

"Lame? In America you can't even say shit; they're the prudes! But I can say helvete in Swedish or if you prefer French?" He started to run a whole range of curse words in different languages, with a smirk on his face while wrapping his arms around Anna who giggled and tried to wiggle her way out of the grip.

A guy walked up to us, asking if we had a lighter, but when we said we didn't, everything changed in a flash. The guy suddenly had a knife in his hands and hissed something about money. Damon and Klaus took a protective stance, with Anna and me behind them, when more people were emerging.

This was a set up.

"You should pick someone else." Damon said in a low voice and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing, by the tone of that menacing voice.

"Give me your wallet!"

"You are picking the wrong crowd." Damon warned again. "Walk away." He hissed and the crooked grin was appearing on his face; I knew that evil grin.

The bastard approaching us had a wicked grin on his face as his gang appeared, closing in around us.

I could easily figure out what was coming; a lot of blood flowing and heads losing all connection to the neck-bone, left and right. "Oh no, please no!" I kept rambling.

The stupid idiots must have thought that I was scared of them, when I in fact was scared for them; they had no idea who or what they chose to pick a fight with tonight.

After having grasped Anna in panic I started to look around. "Surveillance cameras..." I kept mumbling and staring at the freaking camera when I found it high up in the cave-like ceiling by the wall. As I watched it in horror, suddenly it was dangling in the cords, totally smashed and I couldn't believe my eyes. When I tried for the guys to pay attention, I noted a huge grin on the both of them.

Oh! It must have been the guys doing... working super vamp speed.

The camera broken was actually a good thing, as long as that was the only one. I kept looking around to see if I could spot another one, totally blocking out the fight that was about to erupt.

Still grasping Anna hard, I glanced over at the guys who had moved a few meters away from us. Everything was still trembling but as I watched, the first blow was thrown. It was one of the attacking guys that tried to hit Damon who easily grabbed the guy's hand, and almost immediately after, the next guy tried to hit Klaus with the same result.

The surprise on these guys' faces was indescribable, but despite that they were taken aback, it didn't hinder the others to attack, with a replay of the earlier action.

Suddenly there were guys surrounding Anna and me and a yelp escaped my mouth.

The next second, one of the guys was sprawled on the ground before me with his neck in a strange angle. Anna and I was wrapping our arms around each other and closing our eyes. I didn't want to observe this.

This battle was not going the way these punks had planned, but the fact that they lost a guy didn't make them stop.

As I peaked my eyes open, I saw Damon snap another one's neck. A few of the guys gave up and started running, but instantly Klaus was standing in their way looking at them in a compelling kind of way. I wished I heard what he said.

With three guys bleeding, passed out on the floor, and two guys with their necks in unnatural angles, Damon had three guys left that he was forcing a new truth into, and here I could hear what he said.

"You had a disagreement that turned bad and in this battle, two of your friends died."

Wow, that would have cleared us from any suspicion at all.

Klaus came walking with the two guys just when Damon was done compelling the guys that this was an internal affair, and that was the moment the train rolled in.

"Oh God, please call the cops!" He called to the people in the train, acting hysterical in an Oscar-award kind of way.

"Come, let's get out of here." Damon said to Anna and me and put an arm around us as we were still shocked.

We got into the train and it rolled off.

I pulled up my phone and called the cops to tell that we had witnessed how a gang turned on themselves and seemingly killed each other. The panic I had felt earlier about Damon and Klaus blowing their cover made my voice reach the right of hysteria for the story to be absolutely believable.
