Mrs.Lee
"I should go," Izzy mumbled into Jimin's chest.
"No!" Male voices chorused loudly all around her. Seven pairs of arms tightened around her. They had been hugging her for a solid three minutes now.
"You guys do know that I'm going to have to leave eventually, right?"
"But we don't want you to," Jungkook whined as they began to peel away from the hug.
Izzy let out small laugh, shaking her head at their silliness. She pulled away from Jimin, who was the last to release his hold, and walked back to the couch where she had spent the night, picking up the familiar turquoise jacket that Jimin refused to let her give back to him. Izzy pushed her arms through the sleeves, groaning slightly as her stiff muscles stretched.
"Okay, I'm gonna go now. Thank you guys. I mean that, thank you." She gave them a tiny smile and was met with seven adorable boys grinning back at her. Izzy began to make her way past the boys and to the front door when she heard her name called.
"Izzy!" Jimin jogged up her where Izzy had one foot out the door. "Do you want us to walk you home?"
She was surprised at the offer, her eyes growing wide. "Um, you really don't have to do that," Izzy mumbled quietly as she now faced the ground.
"We don't mind. Besides, we've got to head down to the bank." Namjoon jumped into the conversation while pulling on a black leather jacket. The other boys trailed behind him, putting on their own jackets and shoes.
Izzy shuffled from foot to foot in uncertainty, she didn't want the boys to see the crappy apartment she stayed in and the crappy people who lived there. She glanced up, only to see Taehyung's adorable pouting expression and she caved right there. "Um, sure. As long as we don't go out of your way," she was reluctant to agree. She didn't want them to see her as a burden on them. And she really didn't want them to see the pile of drugs on Cassie's coffee table.
"Nah, it'll be fine. Come on," Hoseok slung an arm around her shoulders and pulled her out of the apartment, the other boys following closely behind.
The sun was up and shining, too brightly in Izzy's opinion, but the air still felt cold on her skin. Hoseok's arm gave her a bit of warmth but she shoved her hands into her pockets anyways, hoping to warm them up. Something cold and smooth crinkled beneath her fist in the jacket pocket. Izzy carefully pulled the crumpled up paper out of her pocket. Funny, she didn't remember the flier that lay in her hand. But the words 'Horseshoe Cafe' were vaguely familiar.
"What's that?" Jin peeked over her shoulder, trying to glimpse the paper in her hand.
"Oh, um, it's nothing," Izzy shot a smile over her shoulder at him, quickly shoving the page back into her pocket. Jin cocked an eyebrow at her but didn't say anything, which made her let out a sigh of relief. Izzy made a mental note to stop by that cafe before going to back to Cassie's place.
As much as she didn't want to admit it, she was running out of money, and she couldn't ignore the issue any longer. Money hadn't been a problem when she was living with Youngkyun. Everything seemed to somehow always pay for itself. When she first moved in, Izzy had offered to pay half the rent and utilities but he turned her down, telling her not to worry about it. He always seemed to have money. And she never knew what it was that he did to earn that money, but after a while she just stopped asking. And to be honest, she had been spoiled. She liked when he bought her clothes and food and made her feel as if she didn't have to worry about a single thing. She had gotten too comfortable in that apartment where she didn't have to lift a finger. But now that she had been kicked out on her ass, Izzy found that her credit cards actually laughed at her when she tried to swipe them.
A sudden solution floated in the back of her mind. It was so simple. And that's what made it dangerous.
The way Izzy saw it she had two options to fix this money issue. She could get a job or she could go crawling back to them.
It was a no-brainer.
As easy as it would be to slip back into that life, there was no way in hell she would ask her parents for help. And even more importantly, she would never admit to them that she had been wrong. Pigs would fly, hell would freeze over, and The Simpsons would go off the air before she admitted defeat.
"Hey, Izzy!" She was shaken out of her thoughts.
"What? What's wrong?" Izzy looked around at the group, startled by the sudden movement.
"We should be asking you that," Jungkook looked at her, worry clear in his eyes. "We kept calling your name but you were practically comatose. Are you okay Izzy?"
She laughed nervously, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just lost in thought I guess," she sent the boys a small but reassuring smile. They didn't look convinced but they didn't pry any further.
Once again Hoseok's arm was draped over her shoulder and the group began to walk again. Looking around her, Izzy noticed something odd. Just like when they walked her to their apartment, the boys had formed a circle around her and Hoseok. It's like they were trying to keep her sheltered between themselves. Or maybe it was just an accident, maybe they always walked like that. Izzy brushed it off, not really thinking too much of it. But she couldn't deny the fact that it made her smile a bit.
"There's the bank," Namjoon nodded at a building across the street. They were in the Central city, the nice part of town. Vaguely recalling the address on the flier, Izzy discerned that the cafe wasn't too far from where they stood now.
"Come on Izz, we won't take too long and we'll walk you to your place afterwards." Jimin placed a warm hand on Izzy's back and the boys began to walk towards the bank.
"Oh um, actually I can make it there myself," Izzy retreated from beneath Hoseok's arm, who pouted as she pulled away.
"We're not gonna let you go alone," Taehyung's normally happy exterior suddenly turned serious.
"No really, I'll be fine. And I don't want to make you guys go out of your way so I'll just go." Before they could say anything else, Izzy was already dashing down the sidewalk, not even daring to turn around. She heard them calling her name a few times but didn't turn. She hoped they didn't hate her too much for running away without explanation.
Izzy pulled the cafe flier out of her pocket to check the address. She was right; it wasn't too far from the bank that the boys had gone into. She hurried down the sidewalk, keeping her head down to avoid any distractions.
Soon enough Izzy found herself outside of a small, slightly run down cafe. A metal horseshoe hung above the entrance. For a moment she hesitated, not sure if she should really do this. But then the thought of an empty bank account sprung to her mind. With a heavy sigh, she pushed past the glass door.
The inside of the cafe was much better looking than the outside. Wooden floors connected to metallic walls, giving the place a rustic feeling. It was a clean, open space. The only issue was that it was packed with people.
College aged kids filled every table and chair, even the counter was overflowing with beanie wearing hipsters. They sat around while poking at their phones or furiously typing on laptops. Textbooks and pages of notes covered every surface. Looks like exams were rolling in.
A middle aged woman with trays of food and coffee held in both hands was rushing around the cafe. Izzy watched for a minute as the woman frantically ran from customer to customer, taking orders and filling coffee cups.
Izzy stumbled a bit when the glass door opened behind her and hit her back.
"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to do that," yet another college student rushed past her into the cafe, immediately opening up his laptop.
Having been startled out of her thoughts, Izzy started making her way towards the woman who was filling cups again.
"Excuse me?" She tapped the older woman on her shoulder.
"The wi-fi password is up on the blackboard." The woman stabbed a finger towards the chalkboard hanging behind the counter before rushing to another full table.
"Oh um, no I wasn't asking about the wi-fi," Izzy called after her, dashing to keep up with the woman.
"We're out of coffee but I'm making a fresh pot right now, give it five minutes and I'll be right there." Once again the woman moved on to another table.
And once again Izzy scurried after her. "No it wasn't that either. I just—"
"Then what is it? I've got a full house today and I don't have time to waste so tell me what you want and tell it fast." The woman barked at Izzy, finally turning to face her.
Shocked as she was by the harsh tone, Izzy snapped out of it and pulled the flier from her pocket.
"Well I saw your flier and I was wondering if you were still offering the part-time position?" She timidly handed the flier to the woman.
At hearing Izzys words the woman's face broke into a massive grin, eyes crinkling happily.
"Oh thank god!" The empty coffee pot she had been holding clanged down on the countertop. "You've got the job. My name is Mrs. Lee. You can start tomorrow." She rushed the words out, startling Izzy a bit with her eager tone.
"O-okay," Izzy strutted. "But I don't really have any experience waitressing."
Mrs. Lee just shook her head, "That's fine, there's nothing to it. Take the orders, give them to the kitchen, fill the coffee, bring the orders back to the tables. Easy as that. Now, can you start tomorrow?" The alarming speed at which Mrs. Lee spoke actually scared Izzy.
"Uh yes, tomorrow is fine." Even though she was half a foot shorter than herself, Izzy was afraid to say no to this tiny, scary woman.
"Oh good good good! I'm dying here with all these college kids storming the place. The cafe opens at nine, so get here half an hour before then and I'll give you the rundown of what to do. Now go, I can handle today, but don't you dare skip out on me tomorrow." The older woman was still smiling happily as she left Izzy and rushed into the kitchen.
Izzy stood frozen for a moment, wondering what the hell just happened. She wasn't sure how it happened but she knew that she had gotten the job. Still trying to go over the conversation in her head, Izzy made her way out of the cafe and towards Cassie's apartment. She breathed a sigh of relief, glad that she now had a job. Because there was no way in hell would she ask her parents for help, and now she didn't have to.
