Chapter 17
After our heart to heart we finally make our way into Tori's house. Her mom has just put out a huge array of ingredients to make ice cream sundaes. Tori and Angela don't show up until after I've changed out of my wet clothing and into some dry ones.
Shae, Jackie and I are sitting at the island in Tori's insanely huge bright kitchen. She's another lake resident and the view from the long kitchen windows is amazing. Even on this stormy fall night.
Angela comes walking into the kitchen, her lips are so swollen it's like she had an allergic reaction to something, only I know the truth. She gives me a smug look and then goes to make herself a sundae. Every few minutes she and Tori look over in our direction.
"What is that girl's problem?" Jackie asks. "Seriously, I've known her my whole life and I still can't figure out why she is the way she is," she says.
Shae and I laugh.
"She's been my friend forever and I still can't answer that."
Shae looks over at Angela, it's like she's not surprised by what I told her tonight, but she's also a little disappointed in finding out how ruthless she can be. I can tell that Shae still cares about her best friend, but at the same time she wants to ring her neck for all the things she does.
"So this prank war, how are we supposed to..."
Jackie is interrupted by the sound of Kelly Michael's yelling about something from the living room. We all get up to check out what's going on. Out in the front of the house all of the cars parked along Tori's property now have different color silly strings all over them.
"If that ruins my paint job those boys are going to have their asses handed to them," Simone Carter says, folding her tan arms at her chest.
"Girls we have to come up with something better," Angela says, from the doorway.
The entire team looks in her direction, "We could slash their tires," Holly Flanagan shouts.
We all turn our attention to Holly, she's one of the tiniest girls on the team and one of easiest to throw in the air, but at that moment she looks like she's ready to pounce.
"That would probably get us in a little too much trouble," Jackie says.
She's standing between Shae and I, and now everyone's eyes are on us.
"What about you new girl?" Angela probes, "why don't we have you come up with something."
"Why me?" I ask.
"Think of it like an initiation into our crew," she says.
I laugh. At first it starts out as a soft chuckle, but within seconds I'm laughing like a mad scientist who just discovered how to raise the dead.
"What's so funny?" Tori questions.
"You think I want to be one of your crew?"
The room grows silent. Most of the girls on the team seem as if they would never stand up to Angela in fear that she'd kick them off the squad. She has no say in who stays or goes. She may be the captain, but the coach gets to say who stays on the team and who doesn't.
"I joined the team, because I love to cheer not to be a part of your cult," I say.
Angela gasps, like it's the craziest thing she's heard all day.
"Then maybe you should leave," she says.
"If it means not having to deal with you tonight, then sure. I'd love to," I say.
I start to turn when Shae grabs hold of my arm, "don't let her win," she whispers in my ear.
I meet Shae's eyes and I know where she's coming from. She's one-hundred percent right. I shouldn't run from some stupid petty girls, I've been doing that for far too long. It was time to suck it up and show her I'm not afraid of her.
"You know what Angela. No, I won't leave. I'm a part of this team and have every right to be here as anyone. So what about you captain, do you have any good ideas?"
Angela looks offended that I called her out in front of everyone. She acts like we all have to do everything she says and I'm tired of it. All of the girls eye Angela waiting for her to answer. The cheer captain's cheeks flush pink as she stutters over her own words.
"What if we just did nothing at all," Tori suggests. "Like they are going to be up waiting for us to retaliate, what if we just did nothing at all..."
The girls start discussing the idea. Some are saying how it's the dumbest thing they've ever heard, and some are all for it. Shae seems to be with Tori on it, while Angela is pouting over it.
My phone chimes and I pull it out just in case it's mom, but it's not. Next to Levi's name it says downloading. A few seconds later the picture starts to load. I click on it to enlarge it to find a drawing that looks like the start of a comic strip. It starts with a drawing of a girl that looks like me standing on a football field. The next picture is of the girl again, this time she looks annoyed, but in the background is a boy that looks like Levi and the boy in the drawing looks nervous. The next is of someone standing in front of him and there are anger marks like in an anime above the guys head.
Another picture loads and as it does I've completely tuned out the world around me. The next picture that loads is one of the guy pushing away the person, who just so happens to have a cheer leading outfit and looks exactly like Angela. Next it shows the boy on the field in the rain looking for something or someone. In that boy's hand is a drawing and I can't quite see what it says.
I'm shocked he had enough time to sketch these out, between his make out session and the prank they just pulled. They aren't great sketches, just a rough drawing.
An additional drawing comes through one that doesn't seem like it was originally part of the comic like drawings. This one looks a little wrinkled and wet from the rain, there are smudges in some spots too. The picture was folded too and you can see the creases.
This drawing is a bit more planned out. It's of the girl that was waiting on the field. She is wearing a beautiful dress and dancing with a boy. The people in this drawing look almost identical to us as well. There's a banner above them that says, homecoming. On the bottom of the page in Levi's handwriting it says; Let me take you on another adventure. Be my date to homecoming?
Underneath the text of the picture comes another message. I'm sorry about tonight. Please tell me that you're okay.
"So that's it we're just doing absolutely nothing to get back at them?" I hear Angela huff.
"It will drive them crazy," Tori says, still trying to convince her.
"Fine," Angela pouts, "but someone has to stay awake to make sure they don't strike again," she says.
"Do we ever sleep on prank night?" Shae asks.
Angela gives Shae a real smile, one that she probably gave all the time before I arrived. As much as I don't like Angela, I hope I'm not the one thing coming between their relationship.
My phone beeps again. I can see you contemplating from here.
I stare out the window into the darkness wondering if he's standing outside that window waiting for me.
"Hey guys," I say, almost too quiet. The girls continue to chat, "Guys!" I say, this time louder. They all turn to me.
"I think they are watching us..."
Angela crosses her arms, "How would you know..."
"I'm getting texts from Levi," I say.
Angela's face scrunches with anger.
"Don't look," I tell them, "if they are really out there we don't want them to know that we know."
"Tori, can we adjust the setting on your sprinklers?" Shae questions.
"Hey guys, she's telling the truth," I hear Jackie say.
We all turn to her and she nods towards the backyard and the window in the kitchen that leads to the lake.
"Seems they are all out there, maybe planning something..."
"Hey ma," Tori yells for her mom.
All of us scramble up the stairs to Tori's enormous bedroom. It's dark without the lights on, but the hallway light leaves a soft enough glow for me to get a good look at the room itself. The closet is just as big as my bedroom and I'm in awe by how organized and neat it is. We all gather at the sliding glass doors. It leads out to a large balcony that is attached to her room. From here we can see the boys all standing around like they are waiting for us to come out and check on our cars and maybe they were planning on jumping out from the back to scare us.
Tori and Angela join us a few minutes later with a bucket of Nerf guns armed and ready, and lets us know her mom is adjusting the sprinklers now.
"My brother Thomas had a bunch of these lying around, I figured we could have a little fun," she says, wiggling her brows.
We all wait, mostly in silence, but the giggles ripple through the room. Suddenly the back flood lights come on and the sprinklers rise from the ground. A few of the sprinkler heads shoot up directly into their faces, while others get them from behind.
Angela opens the door of the balcony and we all pile out onto it and watch as the boys jump and yell from the cold water. The temperature dropped from the storm that passed. As the team starts running in the direction of Levi's, I notice he's the only one standing still. He's staring up at the balcony where we are all standing. He's looking at something in his hand and a second later my phone goes off.
Is that all you got? He asks, and even in the dark I can see the cocky smirk on his face.
I look around and whisper to the girls, "Levi's getting cocky, we should probably start firing these bad boys," I say.
Tori helps hand them out. The Nerf guns are all different sizes. Angela tells us to fire and we all start shooting. The orange darts start flying in every direction.
I stop shooting for a moment to reply, was your invitation one of your pranks? I see him from my place on the balcony. He steps outside the range of the sprinkler into the direct line of fire of orange darts. Levi shakes his head, darts are flying all around him. My phone dings, that was real. He glances up at the balcony. I lean over the rail to get a better look at his face. He's serious, I can see it in his eyes as the sprinkler he just stepped in front of pelts him.
I walk back into Tori's room and find a post-it on a small cherry wooden desk in the left corner of the room. I grab a marker from a jar and write out the word YES. I attach the post-it to one of the darts and wrap it around. I make my way through, Levi is still standing there looking up waiting. I aim the Nerf gun directly at him and nail him right in the gut.
Levi's eyes follow the orange and blue dart, then picks it up from the ground. I watch as he unwraps the post-it. His smile is so big I can see it from up here.
"Yo Levi man let's go!" one of the guys shouted.
Levi takes one extra glance in my direction before taking the dart and the note with him and running away from the chaos.
