Chapter 16
It's like I'm on the set of Friday Night Lights. The amount of people out there in the football stadium tonight is insane. Even mom has turned out and is sitting in the stands. She's mostly there for me, but promised Ethan she'd come and cheer him on too. Mom likes Ethan and she keeps giving me these weird looks whenever he's brought up in conversation. It's like she knows I've got weird feelings for him. What she doesn't know is that I've also got those same feelings for Levi.
We're all in the locker room ready for the game to start. Some of the girls are gushing over what they gave their football player today, there were a few that went all out today for it. Most, including me, have our players' numbers written on our cheeks. There were lots of baked goods too and some really interesting ideas that I wouldn't have thought of myself. Sandra Fanning gave Scott Tyler this insanely awesome donuts bouquet, and Liz O'connor gave Bret Hanson one of those fancy fruit ones. Some girls hung huge signs in the hallways. It was like school work was almost non-existent, even the teachers were a bit more lenient with the workload.
"Hey girl, are you ready for your first Sunrise Lake football experience?" she asks.
"I didn't realize how much of a big deal this all was."
She laughs, "It's pretty intense, right?"
"Sure is," I say.
She places a hand on my shoulder, "so are you sure you don't want a ride to Tori's?"
I shake my head, "I'll be there a little late."
She raises a brow at me, "You and your football player gonna hang out for a few?"
I shake my head, "It's Levi, actually."
"Holy shit balls, what did you just say?"
I laugh at her comment, "I said it's Levi."
"Levi Harmon?" She says it so loud that some of the girls turn around.
I sneak a glance around the room looking for Angela, but she's not around. Tori is still here and although she's acting busy by tying her shoes with her foot propped on the bench, I know she's listening in on our conversation.
Shae places a hand on both of my shoulders and stares me in the eye, "Look, I know Levi may seem like he means well and all, but don't forget it's prank night," she says.
"You don't think he'll..."
"How about I hang around just in case?"
I nod, "You know what it's probably a good idea."
"Alright girls, let's move it. It's game time!" Coach calls out into the locker room.
We gather our pom poms and as we exit I see Tori whispering something to Angela. The moment I pass them their eyes land on me. There's that feeling again, like I'm being studied under a damn microscope. Every move I make is being watched by this girl and she will do everything in her power to make sure I don't get the two things she wants.
Outside on the field I'm in awe by how packed the field is. The bleachers on both sides are filled to the max with people spilling out onto the sides and behind the chain link fence that surrounds the property. The smell of hotdogs and cotton candy surround me as we jog onto the track that loops around the field. We stand in front of our crowd and everyone cheers as we start out first cheer.
The announcer's deep voice echoes through the field as he announces the teams. When the Barracuda's are announced the crowd goes wild and we wave our poms in the air and cheer. Honestly the atmosphere tonight completely takes away all of the other drama surrounding me right now. The team jogs out onto the field pumping their fists high in the air. I notice Levi and Ethan right away.
Angela has us starting another cheer and as we do Levi stops mid jog and turns around to find me. I didn't see him in art today, all of the players missed two periods for a meeting with their coach. Something that looks like relief washes over his face, like he's happy to see that I'm there. Ethan looks over as well and unlike Levi he waves over and smiles. I lift my hand to wave back when Angela shoots me a look.
I try to ignore her as the game moves on, but it's hard with her constant staring and whispering to Tori.
The team is doing really good, I'm not much of a football fan nor do I know much about it, but we are leading and that's all that matters right now. We've got the crowd riled up as the buzzer goes off and halftime starts. The guys run towards the locker rooms, but Levi decides to make a pitstop. He jogs over to me, stops, and brushes his hand against mine as he leans in and whispers in my ear, "fifty yard line."
I barely get a chance to look at him before he falls back in line with the team. Shae turns to me, "maybe I was wrong about him," she says.
I shrug. I don't want Angela to see the effect he has on me, although I think she already knows. The band files out onto the field to perform their song. The crowd disperses a bit. Some people take their bathroom breaks others are looking for food or just taking the opportunity to chat with their friends. The football team doesn't emerge until halftime is over.
The game is pretty intense and so far the boys are ahead by several points. Most of the people in the stands are already calling it as a win, you can hear it in their cheers. There's only thirty seconds left on the clock and between the roar of the crowd and cheerleaders you could probably hear the commotion for miles.
Ethan passes to Levi and he rushes down the field and man can that boy run. He runs so fast that when he whizzes by where we are standing he's nothing but a blur. The other team follows at his heels, but Levi is fast. Angela is squealing with delight and shouts, "that's my guy!" Something deep inside of me stirs and I'm not sure what it is, but I don't like the feeling and wish it would just go away.
Levi makes it to the end and scores a touchdown just as the buzzer sounds. He throws the ball down so hard it bounces. The team pours out onto the field to lift him on their shoulders. Levi pumps his fist in the air. It's only the first game, but the crowd acts as if the team has just won a championship game or something.
They put Levi on the ground. Ethan throws an arm over his shoulder as they start walking back. The minute Levi is within a few feet Angela darts for him. For some reason he welcomes her with open arms lifting and spinning her around, and that stupid feeling rages inside of me. It causes my chest to grow tight and my pulse punches through me so hard that I can hear it pulsing in my ears.
I'm so far under this crazy spell that I don't realize the girls have all started running towards their football player. I need to set aside those feelings and cheer on my guy, Ethan. I jog over to him and just like Levi did for Angela, Ethan opens his arms for me. I hit into him so hard he actually grunts upon impact. His laugh echoes in my ear causing shivers throughout my body. Part of me doesn't want to let go, and Ethan kind of feels like home. He holds on for a second too long and by the time I pull away in the corner of my eye I catch Levi watching. I don't linger on the fact and turn my attention right back to Ethan.
"You guys were amazing. I'm in awe by this turn out," I say.
"You haven't seen anything yet, you should see homecoming. It's gonna be insane." He pauses for a minute. "Speaking of homecoming I was thinking..."
"Nice pass dude," Levi says, coming from out of nowhere.
He slaps Ethan on the shoulder, and for the first time since meeting the two of them Ethan has an annoyed look on his face.
"Thanks," Ethan says. There's an edge in his tone.
"Dude, we gotta jet, coach wants to chat," Levi says.
Ethan sighs, "See you later I guess?"
"Yeah, see you later."
As the two of them walk away Levi looks over his shoulder and winks, before turning back in the direction his team is going. I don't allow my eyes to linger, instead I look over at the fifty yard line. The crowd is already mostly gone, and the field starts growing quiet. It's a little weird to be honest and with the impending storm that I spot in the distance I'm not so sure I want to stand out here for very long.
A few people linger in the stands, it's just after nine and the flashes from the storm in the distance are brighter than before. I stand in the center of the white line just where he told me to wait. Shae sent a text a few minutes ago letting me know she's in the parking lot if I need her. If this is just some ridiculous prank I'm totally prepared for that.
Time passes and the few people that were lingering have now pretty much trickled out of the area. The lights are still on and with every passing moment I fear they will go out and I'll be stuck out here in the dark. Tiny droplets of rain start pelting me in the head and I just hope he'll be done with the coach soon. I'm not afraid of the lightning, but being out here in the pitch black all alone scares me.
In the distance I see someone running over, it's hard to see as there is a shadow on their face from the shadows. As they get closer I can tell it's not Levi. I focus on the blue cheer uniform and realize that it's Tori. This was a set up and now I'm leaving. I start walking off the field, but she reaches me before I can.
"Hey, what are you still doing here?" she questions, like she suddenly wants to be friends.
"Was waiting for Levi, but it seems as if the coach is taking a long time. If you see him though tell him I left would you?"
"Do you need a ride to my house?" she asks.
I shake my head, "I'm okay. Shouldn't you be heading that way to get set up?"
"I'm waiting for Angela, she's such a slow poke. My mom has everything set up and is letting all the girls in," she says.
I try to walk around her, but she steps in front of me like she's stalling. The thunder is getting louder and the lightning is much brighter now. The rain has picked up and I'm starting to shiver, even though it was a warm day the nights are starting to cool down a bit.
"What?" I ask.
She opens her mouth to say something, but then closes it.
"You know what," she says. "Never mind."
She starts to leave and then turns back.
"Come to think of it I saw Levi, he should be on his way over," she says, her tone indicating that she's lying.
Tori and Angela must think I'm some kind of dumb hick from Tulsa, but I'm not and I know those two are up to something. I'm so annoyed I don't even want to go to this sleepover, but I also don't want mom to worry about me and if I show up at home. She'll know something is up.
"You should wait for him," she says. "Bye."
She waves and starts jogging back to the parking lot. The rain starts picking up and the light on the field finally goes out, "shit," I curse out loud.
In the rain I pull my phone out and turn on the flashlight. I'm thankful that the parking lot at least still has a few lights. They are a soft yellowish tint and I'm far enough away that it's almost completely pitch black where I am. The rain continues to grow heavier and my entire body is wet now.
As I navigate through the dark field my phone goes off, Tori said that you told her to tell me to leave. I got halfway to Tori's and thought you would never tell Tori something like that. The rain is coming down so hard, I'm on the side of the road and I'm afraid to drive. My phone is going to need some major drying after this. I have to attempt to make it across with just the lights from the parking lot, which are getting a bit easier to see now that I'm closer.
My phone goes off again as I reach the bleachers, I'm coming back. I'm so so sorry. Don't be mad. I don't text her back and place my phone back inside my pocket. I'm about to pass the bleachers when I hear the sound of heavy breathing. I stop and can't believe what my eyes are seeing. Well, actually I can believe it. They both don't notice me, so I slip by. At this point I'm not sure if those are tears running down my face or the rain.
Headlights flash through the darkness and rain as I get into the parking lot. It's Shae's car. She pulls right up to where I am and stops so that I can get in on the passenger side. I slide into her car and shut the door.
"What happened?" she asks, putting the car into park.
"Can we just get out of here?" I ask.
She nods, "of course."
The ride to Tori's is mostly quiet aside from Shae apologizing a million times. She doesn't ask what happens and I'm thankful for that. I need time to process the emotions I'm feeling about Levi and Angela's make out session. It shouldn't bother me, because it's not like he likes me in that way. I don't even know why I allowed myself to feel like it could be something between us.
My phone dings as we pull into Tori's driveway. Where did you go? I looked everywhere. "Bullshit," I say out loud to no one. Shae glances over at me and catches one of the tears that fall from my eyes.
Shae's eyes are filled with questions and I know I have to tell her everything, hopefully it will make me feel better if I get it all off my chest. So I lay it all out there, from the kiss to the ridiculous feelings I've been having. Shae doesn't say a word as I pour my heart out to her in the car in front of Tori's house.
