Chapter 14
Avoiding someone who sits right next to you is harder than I could have ever imagined. It's like his body heat is radiating and there's at least a good few inches between us. Just the feeling of him there is bringing back every single tingle I felt when his body was against mine. It also doesn't help that Ms. Ryan didn't say we weren't allowed to talk to each other, everyone around is quietly chatting.
Today's assignment is fun, she has us listening to eighties music while drawing how we feel the decade looks in our minds when we listen to the music.
Levi leans over, his right shoulder touching mine. I try not to let him see the effect he has on me, because I'm not those other girls who fall at his feet.
"Love the neon colors," he says.
Ms. Ryan told us we could use whatever type of drawing instrument we wanted, I chose colored pencils. I don't know why, but listening to Poison singing about having a good time makes me think of pink and green neon lights and mullets.
"Thanks."
I can't look up, I won't look up. He will never know the effect he has on me.
"Should we talk about what happened yesterday?" He whispers, just loud enough for me to hear over the music.
Now I look at him, and it's the dumbest mistake ever. The moment I do I can't pull away, it's like he's got some kind of weird magnetic pole inside of him that draws people in.
"And you think art class is the perfect time to chat about what happened?"
He chuckles, "you liked it."
He points to me and a smile lights up his face. I shake my head and try to hold in my own smile, but my lips defy my wishes and I probably look like a crazed person or like I'm taking a crap. Either way, my face heats up, my cheeks are definitely red.
"I didn't say anything."
I focus back on coloring neon pink zig zags on my paper. He doesn't say anything more and goes back to drawing a picture of a guy with a mullet and headband.
After the bell rings he doesn't try to talk to me, and I'm thankful he doesn't. I'm not sure I'm ready to share my feelings to him yet, when I have no idea what is going on in my head. I race to my next class hoping it will distract me from thinking about my kiss with Levi.
Levi didn't try asking me about the kiss, but every pass we made throughout the day has consisted of him winking or playing hard to get. Now at practice I've been trying so hard to keep my eyes focused on the coach and not the football field where I can feel the energy off of him as if he was standing right next to me.
There's only a few more minutes left of practice. Coach comes over with a clear bucket and tiny scraps of paper folded inside. She blows the whistle that hangs low around her neck to get our attention, then shakes the bucket a little.
"Ladies," she calls, as we all fall in standing in front of her. "The first game of the season is Friday. In this bucket I hold the names of every football player on the team," she says.
Some of the girls groan, others start whispering to each other sounding excited about what we are doing with those names.
"Each of you will come and pick a name from the bucket. That player will be yours to cheer on. If you are new here or don't know what that means, it means that on game day you celebrate the player you chose."
She stops speaking again, shakes the bucket a little and glares at all the girls giggling like children. I hear Levi's name mentioned a few times.
"You can decorate their locker, write their number on her face, send them a gift. I don't know, just be creative."
We all line up behind each other as the girls start picking out names. Shae and I are at the back of the line. As soon as possible practice is over we are going to get smoothies and chat. The only thing I know is that she's been texting someone all day and smiling every time her phone dings. I have a feeling I know who that someone is and I can't wait for her to tell me every detail.
Angela is next and the minute she pulls it out she turns in our general direction and says to no one in particular, "I got Levi!"
"Why do I feel like she was doing that to take a stab at you," Shae whispers in my ear from behind me.
I laugh, "because I think it was."
The line moves forward and finally it's our turn, I step forward and dig my hand into the clear bowl. I lift the flap of the small white paper and smile at the name scribbled onto the piece of paper; Ethan Marley.
"Who'd you get?" Shae questions.
"Ethan," I say, loud enough so that Angela hears me.
Shae peaks over my shoulder and smirks, "Oh, she heard you," she laughs.
The boys are fishing up and starting to run towards the locker rooms. Some of the guys stop as the girls wave them down to let them know they will be cheering them on. Angela takes the initiative and strolls up to Levi. He gives her a smile that seems more fake than real and I can't help but watch the trainwreck that's about to occur. She tries seducing him with her hips, they sway side to side as she walks. Angela touches Levi's shoulder and starts to run her manicured fingers down his bare muscular arm.
"What's she up to?" Shae asks from behind me.
Angela continues to run a finger up and down his arm. He doesn't look thrilled and that makes it so much more fun to watch.
"What's going on over there?"
A deep familiar male voice asks. I spin and nearly crash into Ethan. He grabs hold of my hips to steady me.
"Seems like our thing, huh?" he raises his brow.
"Totally our thing," I smile.
"So, who'd you get?" he questions.
I spin away from the soap opera known as Angela and keep my sights on Ethan. I press the small white paper to my chest and smile. Ethan's lips pull up, his smile warming my entire body. There's got to be something wrong with me, having feelings for two guys never ends well for anyone.
"It's a secret," I say.
"Oh is that so?"
Ethan has this way of being adorable and that's probably why he's so easy to like. He reaches for the little piece of paper and I jump backwards. I almost forget Shae is behind me and almost crush her. She giggles, "Oh just tell him Morgan."
"It's Tim Smith, isn't it?"
"I don't even know who that is," I chuckle.
"Neither do I. There's no one named Tim Smith," he jokes.
I smack his shoulder playfully and it gives him the opportunity to strike and grab the paper. I try to get it from him, but he holds it up high and I jump for it. He starts opening it as I jump to reach. He's laughing so loud it echoes through the field.
"So you're my girl, huh?" he asks.
His words do something to me and hearing him call me his girl sounds really nice actually. My mind switches to Levi and the kiss and I'm frozen in place from the thought of where things might be headed if I continue on this path. I'm not anyone's girl and I'm most certainly not going to tug on anyone's heart strings and hurt them. Friends, Ethan and I are just friends. Levi and I are ... friends and that's it. Friends who just kissed and that was all it was; just a kiss.
"Guess so," I say, a few seconds later hoping that my delayed reaction does not make him question anything.
"So how will you celebrate me and my amazing self?"
I laugh, clutching my stomach from laughing, "you'll just have to see."
"You need a ride?" he questions.
I shake my head, "Girl date," I say, looking over my shoulder at Shae.
She winks at me.
"Alright then. I'll see you at home."
He waves goodbye. As he starts to walk away Shae comes and stands to my right and we watch him walk away together.
"See you at home? My girl? Oh girl, you are so tangled," she says, resting a hand on my shoulder shaking her head. "Did you also happen to notice the look on Levi's face when you were talking to Ethan?"
I shake my head, "I hadn't even noticed, he seemed more occupied with Angel's manicured finger tips than anything else," I say.
She clicks her tongue, "That's not what I saw," she says.
After Shae and I clean up in the locker room, we get in her car and drive over to the Smoothie Cafe in town. We slide into a booth that looks out onto Main Street. I sip from the pink straw and stare over at Shae who looks like she's in another world, and whatever world that is she's happy there.
"So, what's with you?" I ask, not wanting to talk about Levi, although I know that will be next.
"Jackie and I talked and she likes me too," Shae squeals.
"Oh my god, Shae that's amazing."
"Isn't it?" she squeals. "I mean she does want to take it slow, but I think we might have something ... good," she tells me, her hands moving with excitement as she talks.
She sips her smoothie through her teeth, that's how much she's smiling. Her entire face is lit up and she's moving her head back and forth like she's dancing. She stops drinking and looks over at me.
"What did you have to talk to me about? What did you do?" she asks, wiggling her brows.
I open my mouth to tell her about my kiss with Levi, only nothing comes out. I try again, but I can't seem to form the words. It should be easy to just say, I kissed Levi - only it's not. I shake my head and act like it's no big deal.
"Oh, it was just something really silly. I want to hear more about you and Jackie," I tell her.
"You sure girl?" she asks.
I shake my head, "Positive."
