Tough Pup (Pt 2)

Note: I will be giving the Princess a name in this part. Let me know what you think.

One Month Ago: Barkingburg Cruise Ship

"Ahh! Isn't this the life Sweetie?" The Princess said. She lay on her beach chair, only wearing her bikini and crown. "Just you and me on this cruise alone. Nothing to bother us." The Princess picked up her drink, took a sip, and set it back down. "Isn't it great Sweetie?" The Princess got no response. "Sweetie?"

The Princess looked to her left side and saw per precious pooch silently sitting on her bed. Sweetie had a frown on her face. She didn't seem to be enjoying the cruise at all. This made the Princess sigh sadly. Sweetie had been like this for a few weeks, and she couldn't figure out why.

"Sweetie, are you ok?" The Princess asked.

"I'm fine..." Sweetie said in a monotone voice.

"You've been like this for a while Sweetie. Are you alright?" The Princess asked. Sweetie remained quiet. The Princess had an idea.

"Sweetie, would you like to wear the crown?" The Princess offered, taking the crown off her head. Surely this would cheer her up, right?

"No." Sweetie denied. Now the Princess knew something was wrong.

"You... you don't want the crown?" The Princess said curiously.

"What's the point of having something if it won't make you happy..." Sweetie said.

The Princess started feeling worried. Something was very wrong with her pup. "Sweetie, if something is wrong, you know you can talk to me about it, right? If you need to talk, I'll listen."

Sweetie didn't say anything at first, but after some thought, she decided to speak up.

"Nella? Can I talk to you about something... personal?"

The Princess was surprised but got serious. Whenever Sweetie used her real name, it was always something serious or something personal.

"Yes. Is something wrong?" Nella said, sitting up and getting closer to her pup.

"Do you... ever feel like you're missing something important?" Sweetie asked.

"Something important?" Ella wondered.

Sweetie nodded. "I think I'm missing something, and it's making me feel lonely."

"Lonely?" Nella began to think of potential ideas. "Well, maybe I'm not giving you enough attention." Nella picked up Sweetie and hugged her in her arms. "Is that it?"

Sweetie shook her head. She still felt lonely.

Nella wasn't giving up. "Hmm." Nella looked around, she saw Sweetie's toy frog knight Busby sitting next to her chair. She picked him up and gave him to Sweetie. "Did you need Busby?"

Although Sweetie nuzzled her froggy minion, it still wasn't what she was looking for. "No. It's... something else..."

"Something else..." Nella thought aloud. "Do you think you can describe what you're missing?"

Sweetie thought for a moment. "Well, I guess it's a type of affection, maybe? But, it's not the same affection you and Busby give me."

"Affection? Oh!" Nella beamed. Sweetie looked at her confused. "I know what you need."

"R-Really? What is it?" Sweetie asked. She was desperate to know.

"Love."

"Love?" Sweetie said confused. "But, don't you love me?"

Nella giggled. "Of course I do. But like you said, this kind of love isn't something me or Busby can give you."

"Then... how do I get it?" Sweetie asked.

"Well, you'll need to find that special someone in your life," Nella told her.

"Special someone? You mean like... a mate?" Sweetie wondered.

"Exactly." Nella smiled.

"Oh..." Sweetie looked down sadly, her ears pointing down. Nella noticed this and became concerned.

"Is something wrong?" Nella asked.

"Why would anyone be my mate? After all the stuff I did." Sweetie said sadly.

"Aww, Sweetie. Don't say that. I'm sure someone likes you." Nella reassured.

"I doubt it," Sweetie said.

"Well, maybe there's someone out there who you like," Nella said. Sweetie looked away, she had nervous look on her face. "So you do!" Nella smiled.

"O-Ok. Maybe I do." Sweetie admitted. "But he doesn't like me back."

"What makes you say that?" Nella asked.

"I... framed and trapped him..." Sweetie said.

"Framed and trapped-" Nella gasped. "Is it Ch-"

Sweetie covered Nella's mouth with her paw. "Not out loud!"

"Sweetie, we're the only two here."

"S-Still!" Sweetie said, embarrassed. "It doesn't matter anyway. He doesn't like me."

"You don't know that," Nella said. "Maybe he does like you and you don't know about it."

"That's not true. He hates me."

"Would someone who hates you save your life twice?" Nella asked. Sweetie blushed. Chase has saved her twice before, Once on the day they met and another when she stole a painting of Nella. "Tell you what, I'll help you."

"R-Really?" Sweetie said, surprised.

Nella nodded. "I don't like seeing my own pup so sad. If finding you a mate will make this loneliness go away, then I'll do everything I can to help you."

"Even after... everything I've done," Sweetie said, looking down in shame.

"That's all in the past, Sweetie," Nella said. "I'll admit, I was mostly the cause of your behavior because I didn't spend enough time with you. So let me redeem myself by helping you. Please?"

Sweetie smiled. "Ok."

Nella hugged Sweetie tightly. "Thank you. Now, let's get some lunch! And after that, we can have some girl time!"

"Are there any burgers?!" Sweetie asked excitedly.

"Maybe..." Nella teased. "If we hurry there you might get extra."

"You don't need to tell me twice!" Sweetie said as she ran off. Nella quickly followed.

As Sweetie ran across the deck, something in the air caught her eye. It made her stop in her tracks. Nella stopped next to Sweetie, confused about her sudden stop.

"Sweetie, what's wrong-" Nella looked up and saw what Sweetie was looking at. There was a weird triangle-shaped object flying wildly through the air.

"What is that thing?" Sweetie wondered.

"I don't know," Nella said. The weird object seemed to be getting closer and closer to them. "But we better run!"

Nella and Sweetie jumped out of the way just in time. The object crashed onto the deck of the cruise ship, its engines still on. But they quickly turned off for reasons unknown to them.

Sweetie sighed in relief. "That was close." Sensing that the object wasn't a threat anymore, Sweetie and Nella walked up to the mysterious object and looked at it in shock. It was a blue and white glider, it looked very damaged. But that wasn't their main focus. It was the amount of blood that was on the glider.

"Oh my goodness!" Nella gasped.

Sweetie decided to investigate further. She began sniffing the glider for clues. "This blood... it smells fresh." Sweetie became worried. She sniffed near the engines and gasped. "B-Burning flesh and..." she sniffed again. "Fur... Princess! Some pup is in danger!"

"Let's look around. You search the water on the other side of the boat and I'll search this side," Nella said.

Sweetie nodded and quickly ran to the other side. When she arrived, she immediately began searching for a pup in danger. She looked in the water but had no luck in finding anyone. Her eyes then spotted a deserted island. It was a bit far, but Sweetie could see something in the sand, but couldn't tell who or what it was.

"Need to take a closer look," Sweetie said to herself. She backed up and started running to the railing of the boat, her crown tag lighting up. "Arf! Jet!"

Sweetie jumped over the railing of the boat and landed in the seat of her jet, which had moved out from the side of the boat from a secret compartment. Sweetie put on her helmet and seatbelt, fired the engines, and quickly took off.

As Sweetie approached the island, she used her visor to get a better look. She spotted the thing she saw on the ship. "Arf! Visor, zoom!" Sweetie's visor zoomed in. She could see it clearly now. It was a pup! Almost completely buried in the sand. But it wasn't just any pup.

It was Chase.

"C-Chase?!" Sweetie said alarmed. She landed nearby Chase and got out. When she did, she saw a horrifying sight. Chase was covered in blood. His front paws were twisted almost backward, one back leg was snapped, the other had a bone sticking out of his skin. The back of his helmet was destroyed, the back of his head had a big open wound and was leaking blood. His jaw was broken badly, part of it was bending backward. And lastly, his tail was missing, it looked like it had been burned away. Sweetie could smell the burned flesh, the same smell she found on the glider.

"OH MY GOD!" Sweetie exclaimed. She called Nella. "NELLA BRING THE LIFEBOAT! BRING DOCTORS! BRING ANYONE!"

"Sweetie! Calm down! What's going on?" Nella asked.

"IT'S CHASE! HE'S GONNA DIE! HURRY!" Sweetie yelled. She didn't bother to listen for a response. She ran to Chase and began to dig him out of the sand, which didn't take much time at all. Digging him out revealed his bruised ribs and torso.

"Chase?! CHASE?!" Sweetie said, lightly shaking him. Chase's slowly opened his eyes. This was a relief to Sweetie. He was still alive, but for how much longer was unknown. Chase let out soft whimpers. He began to cry and his body shook.

'He's panicking.' Sweetie thought. "Shh! It's ok! Everything will be fine! Help is coming!"

Chase calmed down, but not from Sweetie's words. He was starting to lose consciousness from blood loss. Sweetie knew she had to stop the blood spilling from his head. She quickly ran back to her jet and came back with her mission uniform. She the uniform in half and pressed one half against the back of Chase's head.

"Everything will be fine! Everything will be fine!" She repeated. She took the other half and placed it where his tail would be. There were more spots but his head and tail were the most important ones. Finally, a medical raft from the cruise ship came to the island and stopped at the beach. Two medics quickly rushed up to Sweetie and Chase. They were horrified at the sight of the injured german shepherd.

"Quick! Let's get him to the ship and get him stabilized! He'll need to be air-lifted to the hospital!" One medic said. The two carefully picked Chase up and placed him on a stretcher. They brought Chase back to the raft and set sail. Sweetie jumped back in her jet and flew back to the cruise ship. She started to cry.

"Chase..."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been two long days since Sweetie found Chase. Nella had ended their cruise trip early to get Chase back to Barkingburg for emergency surgery. The shepherd was currently being treated by Barkingburg's royal surgeons, who were located inside Barkingburg castle. Sweetie was in front of the door, waiting for any news to come of Chase's condition. The terrier had been there since day one, refusing to leave until she knew Chase would be alright. This behavior worried Nella, as Sweetie was refusing to eat or sleep.

Nella made her way over to Sweetie, sighing at the sight of her poor terrier. She had bags under her eyes and it was very obvious she was forcing herself to stay awake, as her body was swaying a lot. Nella sat down next to Sweetie on the floor. She picked up her tired terrier and stroked her back. Sweetie would try to fight back, not wanting to fall asleep, but she was too tired to move.

"Sweetie, I know you're worried about Chase, but standing in front of this door won't do any good. You're just hurting yourself," Nella said.

Sweetie shook her head. "But... Chase..."

"Chase isn't going anywhere, Sweetie. Now get some rest. Please," Nella said.

Sweetie sighed in defeat, knowing that Nella was right. "O-Ok..."

Within seconds, Sweetie fell asleep in Nella's arms.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, Sweetie awoke in her bed, which was right next to the throne. The westie terrier stood up and stretched her legs, fully waking herself up for the day.

"What happened?" Sweetie wondered, forgetting the last thing she had done. Her eyes widened once she did remember and she took off running. But she didn't go far as she bumped into someone. It was Nella, holding a bowl of dog food.

"And where do you think you're going?" Nella asked, crossing her arms with the bowl still in her hands.

"Uhh... To see Chase," Sweetie said.

"Oh, no you don't. Not without eating first," Nella said.

Sweetie shook her head. "But Chase-"

"Chase isn't going anywhere," Nella interrupted. "The doctors and surgeons are still evaluating and treating him. They'll let us know when we can see Chase. Now, eat," Nella urged, placing the bowl of food in front of Sweetie.

Sweetie sighed. Knowing she wouldn't get out of it, Sweetie began slowly eating her food. Nella quickly noticed Sweetie's eating behavior and became worried. Sweetie loved to eat food. She craved it. Nella was always astonished at how Sweetie was able to stay fit and slim despite the massive amount of food she ate. Seeing Sweetie eating slowly was very worrying. The young girl places her hand on Sweetie's back and slowly stroked the terrier.

"Sweetie, if you want to talk you can-"

"I can't just sit here and do nothing!" Sweetie exclaimed, surprising Nella. "Chase is suffering right now and I'm just sitting here doing nothing!"

Nella sighed. "Sweetie, I know how much you want to help Chase, but there isn't much we can do right now."

"Then what can we do?! Just wait until we hear any news?!" Sweetie asked.

"Unfortunately, yes," Nella told her.

"Great," Sweetie knocked her food bowl away and laid back on her bed, facing away from Nella. Nella looked on sadly at her pup. Never in her life had she seen Sweetie so upset before. She could tell that Sweetie really wanted to help, but there wasn't much she could do.

"Chase will be ok, Sweetie. I know you hate waiting, but it's all we can do right now," Nella said as she tried to soothe the terrier.

"I just... don't understand," Sweetie said. "Why... Why did it have to be Chase..."

"I don't know, Sweetie. I don't know..." Nella replied. "But... we did figure out what happened to him."

Sweetie's ears perked up. She stood up and turned to Nella. "Tell me."

Nella nodded. "I hired some detectives to investigate the cause of Chase's injuries. They found some chilling things," Nella took a deep breath before continuing. "Presumably, while out on a mission, the mechanical arm connected to Chase's glider and pup pack broke. Not only causing Chase to fly out of control, but with the arm no longer locked in place it was hitting the back of his head violently while also burning his tail off."

Sweetie looked at Nella in shock, horrified by what she was just told. "B-But what about his other injuries? The glider only hit those two parts of his body."

"I was getting to that," Nella stated. "While trying to figure out why the mechanical arm broke, the detectives found out that there was a hurricane that tore through Adventure Bay from the ocean. More than likely, Chase got too close to it and was sucked in. Breaking his glider and throwing debris at him, causing more injuries."

"Oh... my..." Sweetie said in disbelief. "Wait, I found Chase on an island in the middle of the ocean, far away from Adventure Bay. How did he end up there if the hurricane went through Adventure Bay from the ocean?"

"The hurricane turned around and went back into the ocean with Chase still trapped inside. Honestly, Chase got lucky he stayed in the hurricane until it came across that island instead of landing in the ocean. He would've drowned if he did," Nella said.

"But that meant Chase had to suffer more," Sweetie said quietly.

"Excuse me, your royal highness?"

Nella and Sweetie turned to see the Earl walking towards them.

"The doctors would like to see you two."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was no secret that Barkinigburg had its own medical service. They were top-of-the-line doctors, always ready for any medical emergency. Not only that but they were trained for humans and animals. But never in their lives have they ever seen anyone or pup as injured as Chase was.

Each and every one of them spent countless hours trying to get Chase in a stable condition. They were successful but knew a lot more work needed to be done. But for now, Chase would be okay. The poor pup was currently laying on his medical bed with a full-body cast on, and underneath he was wrapped in bandages all around. A breathing tube and feeding tube were also attached to him, as Chase struggled to breathe and was unable to eat. He was still asleep from anesthesia, but the poor pup was still whimpering in his sleep. Like he had been for days.

KNOCK KNOCK

"That's them," One doctor said. He went towards the door and opened it, allowing Nella and Sweetie inside. Their eyes immediately fell on Chase. It was heartbreaking to see him so broken. But not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. The whimpers they heard from him broke their hearts.

Sweetie thought back to three days ago when she found Chase. The pool of blood he laid in, the mangled body he had, and the fear he showed was a horrifying sight. The once brave, strong pup she knew and loved was now...

Broken...

'Why?' Sweetie thought. 'Why Chase? Why did it have to be him?' Those were some of the many questions she had. Why was Chase near a hurricane? Who let him do something so reckless. And most importantly...

Why did she find him before the Paw Patrol could?

"How is he doctor?" Nella asked the lead doctor.

"Well, it was a lot of work, but we got him stabilized," The Doctor said. "Though right now, we can't say if he'll make it or not. We'll need to do more operations on him in a few days."

"I see..." Nella said quietly. "Is there anything Sweetie and I can assist with?"

The Doctor thought for a moment. "A few things. We need someone to watch over him while we rest and get more supplies for additional operations. Is there anyone here that can watch him?"

"Oh, dear... I'd love to myself, but I'll be far too busy with my royal duties to watch him. And the only other people here will also be busy with me," Nella stated.

"Then I'll do it," Sweetie volunteered. This surprised everyone. Except for Nella, who knew how much the terrier wanted to help. "Please, it's the least I can do. After everything I've done in the past."

The lead doctor turned to all the other doctors and surgeons for approval. They all nodded at him. The lead Doctor turned back to Sweetie and nodded his head.

"Alright. I'll have a nurse come in here and show you what to do," The Doctor told her. He turned back to Nella. "We also need to contact his owner. Do you know who owns this pup?"

"Indeed I do. I'll contact him straight away," Nella said. "In the meantime, please, all of you take a rest. And thank you for everything."

The doctors and surgeons all bowed to Nella and exited the room, leaving Nella and Sweetie alone with Chase.

"N-Nella," Sweetie spoke nervously. "Chase will be ok... right?"

Nella sighed sadly. "I sure hope so, Sweetie. I sure hope so."

Sweetie whimpered sadly. She turned her attention back to Chase. Besides his whimpers, Chase hadn't done anything else. Gently, Sweetie placed her paw on his. Doing so, Chase's whimpers softened a bit. A small smile formed on Sweetie's face, but quickly after, she began to cry.

"He's so scared..." Sweetie said. "What he went through must've been so traumatizing," Sweetie then put her other paw on Chase's paw. "I'll take care of you, Chase..."

"...I promise..."

Present Time: Barkingburg Castle

Sweetie began to wake up from her slumber. When she opened her eyes, she saw that she was laying next to Chase, sharing the same pillow. She got up from her position and gently moved Chase's head to the center of the pillow.

"You need that more than me," Sweetie said. She took a look at Chase's feeding bag. It was nearly empty. She then felt her own stomach rumble. She decided to get a bowl of food for herself and a new feeding bag for Chase. But before she left, she looked at Chase worriedly. Chase was too scared to be alone. He would freak out and come close to having a panic attack. Sweetie rarely left his side, she'd always be next to him. But she was worried that he would wake up while she was gone.

'I'll just have to hurry then,' Sweetie thought. She quietly left the room and quickly ran to get what she needed. When she did, she was pushing her bowl and Chase's feeding bag back to Chase's room. But along the way, she stopped when a group of five pups stood in her way.

The Paw Patrol.

Sweetie growled furiously, causing them to step back in fear. They knew how angry Sweetie was at them and they weren't willing to risk making her angrier.

"U-Uh, H-Hi?" Skye spoke up nervously.

"What do you want?" Sweetie snarled in a quiet voice.

Marshall was next to speak. "U-Um. W-We were wondering if-"

"SHH!" Sweetie shushed him angrily. "Wake up Chase and I'll rip your head off!"

Marshall gulped nervously. "C-Can we see Chase?" He said in a much quieter voice.

Sweetie huffed. "If Chase wants to see you, you can," Sweetie proceeded to continue on her way.

"Wait, what do you mean?" Rubble asked.

Sweetie sighed in annoyance and turned to face them. "Let me put a simple term in an even simpler term. You can see Chase, but only if he wants to see you."

"Why wouldn't Chase want to see us?" Zuma asked.

"Gee... I wonder. It's not like it took you guys a month to finally look for your friend and answer our month's worth of calls!" Sweetie exclaimed.

The pups all whimpered sadly.

"Don't give me those sad whimpers. The only pup that should be allowed to be sad is Chase, and it is because his friend and owner couldn't care less about his well-being!" Sweetie stated. "I can't remember a day where Chase didn't cry... Do you know how heartbreaking it is to see a pup like Chase cry every day!"

The pups were all silent.

"It's sad," Sweetie started. "It's sad that someone who was his enemy showed him more care than his friends! You all should be ashamed!" With that said, Sweetie continued on.

"Wait," Skye said. Sweetie huffed and stopped in her tracks, not bothering to look at them. "Why... are you taking care of Chase? Don't you hate him?"

"Hate him?" Sweetie questioned. She turned to them with an angry glare.

"I could never hate Chase."

Sweetie looked away and continued walking until she arrived at Chase's room. She entered the room and locked the door, not wanting the other pups to enter. She let out a deep sigh before changing Chase's feeding bag. When she was done, jumped on Chase's bed and began checking over him, making sure nothing was out of the ordinary. She then took a look at his heart monitor. His pulse was slow, but not anything to worry about. Every two seconds, the heart monitor would let out a 'beep' sound. At first, Sweetie was annoyed by it and knew that Chase was annoyed by it too. But they quickly got over it as time went on, the beeps were almost nonexistent to their ears. Sweetie looked over at Chase and sighed sadly.

"Still a long way to go..." Sweetie said quietly as she gently stroked Chase's side. She knew that things wouldn't be easy for Chase as he continues to heal. For one thing, Chase would forget how to walk due to his injuries and the amount of time he had been still. It would be a long process for him to relearn to walk due to his tail being gone. Breathing was still an issue for Chase, there were many times when his neck would swell and stop him from breathing, leading Chase to have a breathing tube in his throat until the swelling stopped. But the most worrying was something that Chase had gotten due to his head injury.

Aphasia.

More specifically, Global Aphasia. It meant that Chase couldn't understand or speak any language at all. But it was a strange case. At times, Chase was sometimes able to understand Sweetie and respond accordingly, but it was rare and it's only happened with Sweetie. Doctors thought that Chase had dysphasia, which meant that Chase only lost some of his ability to understand and speak a language. But seeing as it was only Sweetie he could respond to at rare occurrences, they diagnosed him with aphasia instead.

Sweetie didn't know why Chase could only understand her, but she thinks it's due to the reason that she was the only one Chase trusted. Chase would always be uneasy around everyone except for Sweetie, though he is starting to feel comfortable around Nella.

Before Sweetie could think of anything else, she noticed that Chase was waking up. She moved closer to his head, making sure that Chase could see her.

"Hey, Chasey," She greeted. "Did you have a good rest?"

Chase didn't respond, nor did he react.

Sweetie sighed. "Chase, can you try to look at me?"

This time, Chase understood her and looked at her. This relieved Sweetie a little. She was glad that Chase knew of his aphasia, it made things a little easier knowing that Chase was trying his best to understand her. But Sweetie noticed something wrong. She could see fear in Chase's eyes as he looked at her.

"Are you scared?" She asked.

Chase didn't reply.

"Chase, are you scared?"

Again, Chase didn't reply.

Sweetie sighed and hugged Chase gently. The hug calmed him a bit. "It's ok to be scared. You can let it out. I'll be here for you."

It wasn't long until Chase began to cry. Though she had seen him cry many times, it was still hard to believe that a strong and brave pup like Chase was crying like a baby. It was always heartbreaking to see, and even harder to watch.

"It's ok, Chase. Everything will be fine," Sweetie said as she nuzzled him. The only one who could calm Chase down was Sweetie. The terrier made sure she was always by his side at all times. She hated it whenever she had to leave him. She wanted to stay with him for as long as she could.

"It'll all be over soon. I promise."

The End

The story doesn't end there. Stay tuned for the continuation in "Scared Pup".

Smile :)
