Chapter 14

After we eat lunch, Aubrey and I walk home. Dad should be home in a couple of hours now, I think. So, I change out of Trystan's clothes and plop myself down on the couch, next to Aubry.

When Dad arrives home, Aubrey and I go to the door to greet him. "Hey, Dad," I say.

"Hi, Daddy!" Aubrey greets him, super excitedly.

"Hi, my girls."

"How was your trip?" I ask once he's settled.

"About that," he starts. "Girls, I have some news for you." he says happily, looking between Aubrey and me to see our reactions. Aubrey looks excited, like he just announced that he got her a pet unicorn. I, on the other hand, don't know what to think.

"Okay, Dad, what is it?" I ask.

"I'm engaged." My mouth drops open. I do the only thing I can think to do right now. I grab my phone and run out the door. I run.

I run until I can't run anymore. I end up at an old park with broken swings and crooked benches. It was probably unreasonable to run away from the situation, especially since Mom died so many years ago. I sit down on an old broken down bench, my mind in a million different places. I can't help it; I jump to every possible conclusion. He's been lying to us all these years; he cheated on Mom before she died all those years ago; he's been out of work, going out with new women, trying to replace Mom all those times he said he was working; he has taken out of my and Aubrey's college savings and that was his "pay" every week from work. I overthink myself to sleep.

When I wake up, I remember what happened last night. I quickly survey my surroundings, get up, grab my phone, and start running away.

I don't know where I'm going until I get there. I find myself at Trystan's house, knocking on the front door. I realize I probably look like a homeless ape.

Jolie answers the door. "Hi, Charlie. What brings you here?" she asks.

"I need to talk to Trystan." I reply, my voice trembly.

She lets me in, and I immediately run into Trystan. Talk about convenience. "Hi, Charlie," he greets before I collapse and he catches me as I start crying into his shirt.

"What happened?" he asks, concerned, while carrying me up the stairs to his bedroom so we can talk without getting interrupted. I try to answer, but it just results in more sobbing. Eventually, I fall asleep, in Trystan's arms.

When I wake up, yet again in a place that is not my bed that morning, I realize I'm lying on Trystan, who is staring down at me. "Good morning, sleeping beauty."

"What time is it?" I demand.

"Well, it's noon right now; you came here around eight; and you fell asleep pretty much right when you got here; so, before you ask, you have been sleeping on me for about four hours." He says, all prepared with this spiel, as if he'd known I would ask what time it is and, not only that, but my follow up question, too. Maybe I am predictable, after all. I mean, not to my dad, though, obviously. Since he's always out with a woman who isn't Mom.

"I've been sleeping on you for four hours?" I question in disbelief.

"You got that right," he replies, that smirk in its place on his face.

I get up off of him, and head towards the door, when I realize I don't have my phone. I pause. "Where is my phone?" I ask, not necessarily in the nicest way possible.

He smirks, yet again. "You didn't think you could leave without explaining, did you?" He teases, holding up my cell phone and wiggling it around.
