Biography:

Katerina was born following a Hydra and KGB sanctioned experimental breeding programme. She is the result of the pairing of the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) and

Due to the nature of her parents, Katerina was born a dhampir, half human-half vampire, with super soldier enhancements. Her mother was put down by Hydra agents when she fought back against them taking her daughter away from her.

The Winter Soldier was granted 'special permission' access to his daughter in the beginning for 'good behaviour' and Hydra discovered that Katerina was a great way to control the Asset. He was a firm fixture in Katerina's life for the first three years.

As a toddler, she was deemed by the Red Room to possess potential and she was pulled away from the Winter Soldier.

Katerina was brought up within the Red Room Academy, where she endured both an education and indoctrination into the world of spy-craft. Due to her enhancements, Katerina excelled at the Academy.

In 1992, Katerina was granted a reprieve from the Red Room and was given an undercover assignment. Along with two other girls named Natalia Romanoff and Yelena Belova, the three acted as the daughters of Alexei Shostakov and Melina Vostokoff and relocated to the United States of America, where Shostakov and Vostakoff were tasked with retrieving cognitive data from the North Institute, a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility secretly run by HYDRA. For three years the five lived as an American family in Ohio and while aware that the family aspect was a simple ruse, Katerina loved them all like they were her actual family while Shostakov and Vostokoff loved the three as their daughters.

In 1995, Shostakov successfully stole the data and burned down the North Institute. Realizing that they had to leave Ohio and that she had to return to the Red Room, Natalia became upset while Vostakoff apologized. As they fled to an airstrip, they faced resistance from S.H.I.E.L.D., who injured Vostakoff. Katerina was then forced to fly the plane herself and successfully landed in Cuba.

Upon arriving, Natalia apologized to Vostakoff, who told her not to let the Red Room take her heart. As soldiers attempted to take Natalia and Yelena away, Katerina went to their defense and held the soldiers at gunpoint while Natalia and Yelena clung to her. As Katerina threatened to shoot the guards, Shostakov attempted to calm her down. Katerina expressed her refusal to return to the Red Room or to allow Natalia and Yelena to be indoctrinated into the program, citing Yelena's age, to which Shostakov reminded her that she was even younger. As he took the gun from her, Shostakov told Katerina that she and Belova would be all right, and that they were to take care of each other. However, on Dreykov's signal, Katerina, Natalia, and Yelena were sedated and placed on a plane headed to the Red Room Academy.

Katerina awoke in a cargo container with several other girls, watching as Dreykov told his men which girls to kill and which to take. As guards took Natalia and Yelena away, Katerina rushed to her younger sisters' side and gave Yelena a photograph of their family before three other guards pulled her away from them.

Returning to the Red Room Academy, she resumed her prior training, undergoing psychological conditioning and physical training, they also began to put heavy emphasis on her vampire side.

- Becoming Nocturna, The Heartless Black Widow:

Being a beautiful young woman, she was tasked with missions that involved her getting close to male targets, seducing and charming them, eventually marrying them. Usually, within a year following this, her 'husbands' would be dead and Katerina would be gone. She was effective. At the moment, she is known to have gone through five husbands and a fiancee, with her sixth husband surviving her but dying at a later point.

- Blinded:

Sometime later, Katerina was at a formal dinner with her then-husband Alexander Witherspoon when the Winter Soldier was tasked with Alexander's assassination at the behest of Hydra, despite the KGB working on it. Seeing the shot coming, Katerina attempted to 'save' her husband, as he was her mission, and took the intended bullet instead. The bullet entered her skull and whilst her vampire side healed her, for some reason, it left her blinded.

- Saved:

Following her blindness, the KGB were reluctant to send Katerina out into the field. Instead, they kept her at a facility under heavy guard. When Natalia was sent to apprehend Alexander Witherspoon for Shield when she noticed framed photos of a familiar face.

With Shield's help, Natalia discovered the location of the KGB facility where Katerina was being kept and Natalia rescued Katerina with the help of Clint Barton.

- Safe House:

After her rescue, Katerina was taken to a safe house where she has been since, with Natalia's help she's started to learn how to look after herself and to use her abilities to overcome her blindness.

Personality:

Katerina was raised to be calculating, cold, and merciless, but beneath that she has shown that she is strong, hardened, intuitive, hot-tempered, and passionate, but has been hurt in the past.

She can also come across as detached and guarded to those that don't know her. Katerina has a deep sense of loyalty and duty to her family, and loves her 'sisters' Natalia and Yelena unconditionally, even after so long away from them. To those closest to her, she is generous and kind and can be bold and outspoken.

Katerina is scrappy, resourceful, and not afraid to get into a fight.

Katerina has been known to have a rather short-tempered. She hides her more sensitive side underneath her tough, confident exterior; it's difficult for her to ask for help.

Katerina can also be emotionally fragile.

She is just a lonely woman who wants someone who actually cares about her after spending so long with the KGB.

Katerina shows on multiple occasions to have a soft spot for children. She is very good with them, able to talk to them with ease, and she is always very sympathetic. Her affection extends to nearly all children, particularly young ones, although she also cares about teenagers. Katerina is more willing to put her life in danger for children than she is for nearly anyone else. She has a natural maternal instinct.

Dhampir Physiology: Katerina was born a human/vampire hybrid, the enzymes in Katerina's blood make her immune to normal vampire bites, uniquely attuned to sensing the supernatural and resistant to ageing. She has superhuman strength, senses, and stamina, plus an accelerated healing factor.

Superhumanly Acute Hearing: Katerina's sense of hearing is heightened to levels comparable to those possessed by true vampires. Her hearing is enhanced to detect sounds that an ordinary human can't hear and enable her to hear sounds an ordinary human can hear but at greater distances. Katerina is also able to sense the presence of supernatural beings or forces whereas an ordinary human would be oblivious to them.

Following her blindness Katerina gained a number of other abilities due to her lack of sight, including:

- Echolocation: Katerina possesses an exceptionally advanced form of echolocation. She is able to detect objects in her environment by sensing echoes from those objects, by actively creating and listening for sounds - for example tapping her cane, stomping of her enemies' feet, raindrops, ticking from a watch, tumbling of a safes locks, rattling chains or even a person's heartbeat. She can interpret the sound waves reflected by nearby objects, accurately identifying their location and size.

- Lie Detection: Katerina's hearing is so acute, that she can tell whether people are lying or not, based on the rate of their heartbeats.

- Clairaudience: Katerina's hearing is tuned to levels of the universe that only she can hear. This gives her an ability to discern details of the world around her which no one else can.

- Precognition: Katerina's clairaudience allows her to hear warnings from the future. She finds it difficult to explain to other people, but she claims it's like hearing echoes of whispers about things that are to come. She claims trying to listen to a single voice is like trying to wade through static.

Superhuman Sense of Smell: Katerina possesses an incredibly pronounced sense of smell, easily able to discern what's human and what's not even from a good distance away.

Superhuman Sense of Taste: Katerina was able to tell that Clint had ripped open some of the stitches on his back, due to tasting copper in the air from the blood of his open wound.

Empathy: With her enhanced senses, Katerina can read peoples emotions by reading shifts in the air around them, including the tasting and scenting of pheromones.

Electroreception: Katerina is able to detect electric fields, similar to a shark. Katerina was able to find a hidden room by feeling an electrical current coming from behind the wall. She could hear the electricity buzzing inside the wall and felt a stop in the current were the mechanism for unlocking the secret room was.

Superhuman Sense of Touch: Katerina can feel the presence of those around her through vibrations, air currents and body temperatures. She can dodge attacks and projectiles by feeling them cut through the air, creating ripples of currents only detectable by her. She can even locate enemies through walls and from different floors by feeling the vibrations they make from moving, such as their footsteps.

Superhuman Strength: Katerina possesses the strength of a vampire, allowing her to lift about 1 ton due to her half-vampire side. Katerina has routinely makes prodigious jumps of hundreds of feet through the air, and has sufficient strength to easily rip the head off of another with her bare hands.

Superhuman Speed: Katerina is capable of running and moving at speeds greater than even the finest human athlete. She can also accelerate her movements to cover short distances in an instant, faster than the human eye can see, but she is not as fast as a pure vampire, even with the super soldier serum. Her reflexes are similarly heightened. She moves so fast that everything else when compared to her, appears to be moving in slow motion.

Superhuman Agility: Katerina's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. She can leap several feet into the air and is able to move, jump, climb, flip, and run at incredibly fast speeds without difficulty or exhaustion. She can perform above-human parkour feats and virtually always land on her feet.

Superhuman Stamina: Katerina's musculature generates less lactic acid (i.e. muscle fatigue) during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. She can exert himself at peak capacity for several hours before fatigue begins to impair her.

Superhuman Durability: Katerina's Vampire/Human Hybrid tissue allows her to sustain physical trauma to a certain extent. She can withstand powerful energy blasts, exposure to temperature extremes, and great impact forces without being injured.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Katerina, like true vampires, possesses an accelerated healing ability that allows her to heal mild to moderate injuries with much greater speed and efficiency than ordinary humans. She is capable of healing from severe slashes and puncture wounds within a matter of minutes to hours depending on the severity of the wound. Despite this, she was not able to heal her blindness following a bullet to her brain.

Immunity To Vampire Vulnerabilities: True vampires have numerous and very particular supernatural vulnerabilities, most of which Katerina is totally immune to. For instance, Katerina is unaffected by direct exposure to sunlight, whereas most vampires are either rendered comatose during the daylight hours or are quickly incinerated when exposed directly to sunlight. Vampires are also highly allergic to silver, supposedly because of the metal's mystical purity. As a result, silver blades or bullets are capable of killing vampires. If not killed, and merely injured, it will take a vampire much longer to heal than if the injury had been inflicted by another material. Katerina herself can be injured by a silver weapon, much as an ordinary human would, but her healing powers would be able to heal it as if it were an ordinary wound. Katerina is also immune to the effects of religious icons, such as crucifixes, whereas vampires are rendered almost powerless when confronted by them.

Immortality: Katerina, like all vampires, is immune to the effects of ageing and is immune to all known Earthly diseases as long as she ingests fresh blood on a regular basis to maintain her vitality. She seemingly stopped ageing once she reached 25, though as she is still young, this isn't something widely known to her.

Fangs: Like all vampires, Katerina has fangs and claws. She can quickly drain a victim of blood.

Shapeshifting: Katerina is able to shapeshift into a bat, a rat, a wolf, and mist.

Psionics: As a dhampir, enhanced by super soldier serum, Katerina has psychic abilities, enabling her to scan the superficial thoughts of any mind less adept than her own.

- Telepathy: Katerina has shown that she is capable of telepathy.

- Mind Compulsion: Katerina can compel the minds of most sentient creatures.

- Dream Manipulation: Katerina can control dreams and the subconscious of humans and vampires. She can produce and modify dreams, bestow nightmares or lucid dreaming.

- Illusions: Katerina has the power to trick the minds of others into seeing/feeling things that aren't actually happening.

- Telekinesis: Katerina is a highly adept psychokinetic who can mentally control and rearrange matter at a minutia level, being able to construct a ship from its base parts with the power of her thoughts.

- Flight: Katerina can fly at high speeds, being able to attain velocities up to 760mph.

- Mind Control: A person bitten by Katerina is able to be influenced by her through a sort of empathic link. Only beings of exceptionally strong wills are capable of resisting her.

Master Martial Artist: Katerina is one of the most dangerous and best fighters in the world, with supremely skilled in hand-to-hand combats and martial arts, having been trained from a young age in the Red Room. During her time in the Red Room, she was seen using her martial arts to defeat a grown man by swinging his head into the corner of a desk, proving how formidable she was even when she was young. She is extremely skilled in the field of martial arts.

Knife Mastery: Katerina is highly skilled in using a knife. This has shown during her skirmish with Taskmaster, Romanoff wielded a knife against her with great skill.

Master Marksman: With her enhancements, Katerina is a very accurate marksman who was skilled in sharpshooting.

Master Acrobat: With her enhancements, Katerina is an extremely skilled gymnast, acrobat, and aerialist, often incorporating gymnastics and acrobatics into her fighting style as she fought opponents.

Master Spy: Katerina is a dangerous secret agent highly skilled in espionage, stealth, disguise, infiltration, and seduction.

Master Assassin: Katerina is notorious in the art of assassination, considered to be one of the most dangerous assassins in the world.

Gifted Intellect: Katerina's intellect seemingly put her on par with Steve Rogers and Clint Barton. She possesses the ability to quickly process multiple information streams like threat assessments and rapidly respond to changing tactical situations.
