But here's a little way to make your characters more interesting.

Let's take Jason Grace for example, from Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan.

He has a small scar on his upper lip. Why? You ask. because he tried to eat a stapler. He was also hit in the head with a brick.

It's a nice little interesting piece that makes your writing just a tad bit better.

So you can have cool or funny little stories behind your character's appearance.

No, it's not necessary. 

BUT(T)

It makes readers laugh (or cry, or whatever fucking emotion you're trying to make them feel)

With this you HAVE to be original, because people remember this, they might not remember your character's name, or what they looked like, but they sure as hell will remember this.

Adding on to that...

distinguishing features are a good way to remember a character. We all remember Harry's round glasses, Percy's sea green eyes, Keefe's styled blond hair.

Whatever distinguishing feature you character has, make it stand out.
