Chapter 5

"Here we are." Frisk said, hiking up the last rock. I followed close behind. The hike took a little bit of difficultly, as I had only one free hand to work with.

She got on top of the mountain and held a hand out to me. She grunted a little as she helped pull me up onto the top.

"I forgot how steep that hike was." I said, breathing heavily. I may be in shape, but that hike took a load on anyone.

"Yeah." She agreed, starting to walk towards the drop. We walked over vines and rocks, and all sorts of other things.

I paused, and taking a deep breath. Frisk noticed I stopped and turned to face me.

"What's wrong?" She asked gently.

"T..This is the vine I tripped over, causing me to fall." I said slowly, a wave of nostalgia washing over me. Images flashed through my head, my hike up, the tears, the frustration, the vine, the "trip."

I took a deep breath, calming myself.

"Okay, I'm okay." I said opening my eyes, suddenly realizing they had been closed. Frisk was looking at me, an endearing look on her face.

"You don't have to go any farther if you don't want to, Chara." She said kindly. I took another deep breath, and shook my head.

"No, really. I'm okay. I wanted to get over this anyways." I answered, reassuring her I was okay. I needed to face this, face this old life, the old memories. Hopefully, I could maybe find peace with it somehow... maybe.

"Okay." She smiled. I caught up to her, and there we stood above the deep hole we both fell down before. Suddenly she tripped a little to the side, seeming to loose balance. I panicked, seeing her tumble to the side. Luckily, she only fell a little.

"Frisk! Are you okay?" I asked worried, putting my arms out to catch her if she were to stumble more. She put her arms out for balance and took a deep breath.

She looked at me, her eyes a little teary.

"I'm having the waves of nostalgia I think you experienced with the vine." She answered, laughing a little. It wasn't a funny kind of laugh though, it was a sort of desperate, sad sounding laugh.

"Yeah, I know. They can hit you kind of hard." I said, feeling sympathetic. We've both been down this road before, we've both gone through the experiences. We both understand.

We stood, lost in our thoughts. The wind blew through our hair, the chill feeling kind of calming.

"Okay, let's start then." Frisk said, refocusing on the task. Her voice pulled me out of the memory world I had been lost in.

"Yeah." I nodded.

She walked over to a tree and tied the rope around it.

"Do you think the rope will be long enough?" I asked, noticing the tree was sort of far from the drop.

"I think so." She said, kind of paying attention and kind of not.

"Oh, okay, great." I replied sarcastically.

"I'll go down first, okay?" I said, grabbing the end of the rope tying it around my waist.

"Wait! What if you get hurt? Why don't I go first?" Frisk asked, panicking out of nowhere.

"Frisk, it's fine. We've both taken the fall. Even if the rope failed I'd be fine. I've gotten stronger." I said confidently. I was pretty strong, I think she knew that too, although we also both knew she could handle herself as well. However when it came to it, if one of us were to take the fall I'd rather it be me.

She sighed, nodding.

"It'll be fine, don't worry." I stated once again smiling a slight bit, trying to make her feel more reassured.

"Okay." She said, her face relaxing a bit, not completely, but slightly.

"So should I just jump, or try to climb along the wall?" I asked looking towards the edge.

"Climb. If you jumped and it snapped: One - You would get hurt. Two - I would have no good way to get down. Three - It'd be difficult to get you back up." She explained.

"Oh yeah, that makes sense. You're pretty smart Frisk." I smirked. She blushed a little.

"Thanks, Chara." She replied.

"Alright, should I just go for it?" I asked, stepping closer to the edge.

"Y- Wait!" She said suddenly pulling my shoulder back.

"What??" I asked, her pull catching me off guard.

"We should throw down the shovel first."

"Oh yeah, again good call." I said throwing the shovel down the hole. We watched it fall until it landed on the yellow flower bed below.

"Okay, we good now?" I asked turning to her. She took another breath and nodded.

I walked towards the edge once again, crouching down.

"Wait!" She called again. I turned on my heels to face her. I raised an eyebrow.

"Yes?"

"Be careful." She said quietly. I smiled.

"I will." I promised.

I turned back and leaned over to see any rocks I could grip.

"Okay, I think I found a good spot, Frisk." I said, starting to turn myself over the edge.

She walked up to next to me and watched as I latched one of my feet onto the first rock.

"It's just like backwards hiking." I said aloud.

"Except I can't see shit." I added squinting below me trying to see rocks. I heard Frisk laugh a bit as I found the next rock.

Slowly but surely I descended my way down. I gave up on looking for rocks below me, and just felt for them with my feet. The rocks were cold, but the texture was easy to grip.

I got down to when there were only a few feet below me. I decided to take the chance and jump. I turned frontwards, jumped off, and landed hard, but stable on my feet.

"Looks like you were right about the rope being long enough!" I called up to Frisk. She was biting her nails when I looked up at her. I smiled slightly, her nervousness was kind of cute.

"Yay!" She brightened.

 "Are you okay?" She asked.

"Yeah." I answered. I untied the rope from around me, allowing Frisk to pull it up to her. She tied it around her waist and carefully hoisted herself over the edge. Now it was my turn to be worried.

She followed almost the same path as me, finding rocks as she made her way down. About half way down one of her feet slipped off a rock. A wave of panic flooded me.

"Ahh!" She screamed a little.

"You're okay! You're okay!" I yelled, trying to keep her calm. I saw her hands grip the rocks tighter as she brought her foot back up to the rock.

"Okay, I'm good now!" She said, relaxing. She continued climbing down, a little more slowly now, taking more time to position her feet firmly on the rocks.

"You screamed like a girl!" I teased.

"Oh, shush!" She replied.

I laughed, grinning.

Pretty soon she was a couple feet above the ground like I had been.

"Alright, you can jump now, if you think you can land on your feet." I told her.

"Psh. Chara, please." She said confident sounding.

"Oh hoho, let's see your jump then." I taunted. She carefully turned frontwards, and jumped. Low and behold she landed on her feet. She dusted her hands off like people do in movies.

"Ha."

"Alright, I got to hand it to you. That jump was pretty smooth, unlike your foot fail." I grinned. She playfully hit me.

"I slipped." She said defensively.

"I saw that." I continued to tease. She looked at me seriously for a few seconds before finally cracking and laughing a little.

She untied the rope, dropping it on the ground for later. We looked down at the buttercup flowers, both of us silent for a moment. I looked up at Frisk and she nodded, as a sign she was ready to keep going.

I grabbed the shovel and we walked down the short corridor to where we assumed Flowey would be.

"So, you sure he'll be here?" I asked Frisk.

"I hope so."

"Hope?" I questioned. Uh oh.

"Well, he ran away after I spared him."

"Oh great. I hope he's here, I don't feel like trekking through the Ruins as well as the entire Underground to find him." I sighed.

"Yeah, me too." She agreed, sighing as well.

We entered the small room, and thankfully, there Flowey sat. He looked bored, as he was just staring at the ground.

He looked up when he heard our footsteps, and his face was filled with complete shock. However that didn't last long as it was replaced with his evil state.

"What are YOU IDIOTS DOING HERE?" He yelled in his screechy voice.

"Saving you, you asshole." I responded approaching him.

"Chara! Be nice!" Frisk said. I laughed to myself a little, she's kinda cute when she does things like that.

"SAVE ME? I DON'T WANT TO BE SAVED!" He growled.

"Well, it sucks to be you then, doesn't it." I replied starting to dig a small hole around him. This time Frisk laughed a bit.

"STOP IT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!"

"See Frisk, he just does not listen." She giggled watching me dig out the hole around Flowey.

"It's okay, Flowey. We just want to bring you the Surface where you won't be so alone." Frisk explained softly.

"ALONE? I LIKE BEING ALONE!" Flowey angrily yelled.

"Yeah, yeah. Sure you do." I said, starting to dig underneath.

"How far do your roots go?" I asked him, not sure how far to dig underneath. He didn't respond right away.

I stared at him, waiting for an answer. He just stared back, his face frozen and annoyed looking. I kept staring, making direct eye contact with him until he finally groaned.

"Not very far." He sighed. I smirked.

"Good boy."

"'Good boy.'" He mimicked in my tone. I rolled my eyes, hitting the shovel down with my foot.

"Want me to take over, Chara?" Frisk asked.

"Nah it's okay, I'm almost done now anyways." I said.

The ground was pretty soft, probably from Flowey popping up and out of here all the time back when the Underground was full. I hoisted the extra dirt to the side until it was just Flowey sitting on a single column of dirt.

"Okay, I guess we can just pick this part up?" I asked turning to Frisk.

"Yeah, I think so." She answered walking over to help me disconnect the dirt from the ground. Within a few lifts we got it up, and Flowey mobile.

"Okay, I'll get the pot." Frisk said taking off her backpack. She pulled out the blue pot she had gotten for Flowey.

"Here we go." She said putting the pot out for Flowey. I maneuvered him in, and we both added extra dirt wherever there were gaps.

"There Flowey, feel nice and snug?" Frisk smiled. He groaned, but hesitantly nodded.

"Good. Now, time to get back to the Surface." Frisk said, taking Flowey from me.

We headed back to where we left the rope.

"WHY DO YOU GUYS WANT TO SAVE ME ANYWAY?!" Flowey yelled as we walked.

"Because, Frisk is actually nice. Take some lessons." I answered. Frisk blushed a little.

"WHY DON'T YOU DEMON-FACE?!" He yelled as a comeback. The term, "demon-face" made me feel uncomfortable and a little angry. But I just tried to ignore it, as he was just Flowey. He can't really help it.

"I'm already the star student." I replied, snarling only a little. Flowey rolled his eyes and Frisk smiled a little before stating,

"Chara's always been good. Just like I know you are Flowey."

"Please! Don't make me laugh Frisk! Me, nice? Good? Kind? Haha, that's hilarious." He daunted.

I exhaled sharply through my nose, trying not to get upset.

Frisk just kept smiling her delicate, happy looking smile. I admired that, how she could stay so calm around people, even if they are flat out rude.

The trek back went pretty smoothly. It was awkward at some points. No one was sure what to say. Except every now and then Flowey would complain about how cold it was, or how he wasn't comfortable.

When we were almost back I pulled out my phone to check the time. 12:45.

"It's only 12:45. It's been about 2 hours." I told Frisk, shoving my phone back in my pocket.

"That's not too bad of a time." She said back.

"Not to bad of a time.. Maybe you shouldn't have chosen such a far away place to live." Flowey grumbled to himself. I rolled my eyes.

After a few moments of silence I started thinking about Flowey. I guess his grumpiness and rudeness distracted me from who he actually is. I shook my head, trying to knock out the thoughts. But they always came back. It's my fault. My fault he is stuck like that. If I just hadn't...

The emotion began to overcome me as I scrunched my face, trying to not tear up. I sniffed, hoping it'd stop the tears.

Frisk looked over to me, concern flashed across her face. She looked down at Flowey who was staring towards the ground. She slung him into one arm and took my hand.

"It's okay." She mouthed to me. I smiled a little, nodding.

My thoughts turned to another subject. How she was so... so comforting. Whenever she told me something was okay, I felt a little better, even if it didn't really change the situation. I'm not sure, but, she made it feel okay.

After a few minutes, the house came into view.

"Here's the house, Flowey!" Frisk said excitedly, gesturing widely towards the house.

Flowey looked towards the house and sighed.

"It's better than the barn I was expecting."

"I'll take that as a compliment." Frisk said smiling.

We got to the front door and I quietly unlocked the door walking in.

"Okay, Flowey. Everyone is sleeping so please be quiet." Frisk whispered.

Flowey groaned nodding.

Suddenly we heard footsteps coming from the kitchen.

"Frick. Frisk, do you think it's Mom?" I whispered to her.

"I-I don't know." She said worriedly.

"Clearly not everyone is sleeping." Flowey teased.

"Shhh!" Frisk and I both said to Flowey. He rolled his eyes and looked towards the ground again.

The footsteps got closer as we tried to make our ways silently, but quickly up the stairs.

"Dorks! What are you doing? It's me, chill." We heard Undyne call, not too loud, but loud enough to get our attention. We both let out sighs of relief.

We both suddenly realized she didn't know we got Flowey. No one did. I didn't even think of how we were going to tell them.

I stepped in front of Frisk, so Flowey was blocked.

"We might as well tell her now, Chara. They'll all find out tomorrow, or today anyways." She told me. I nodded. Plus Undyne has proven to be pretty cool with things.

We walked back down the stairs and went to greet her.

Undyne's gaze went down to Frisk's arm, to Flowey.

"Hey, who's the little guy?" She asked leaning down to meet eyes with Flowey.

"Howdy! I'm Flowey..." Flowey started in his cheery voice.

"FLOWEY THE FLOWER!" He growled turning genocidal. Undyne jumped back a little, startled by his jumpscare.

"Flowey! Be nice!" Frisk scolded.

"Hey! What's the matter with you?" Undyne snapped.

"Undyne, he is souless, please. Just... give him a chance." Frisk pleaded looking at Undyne.

Undyne's hard expression softened a little.

"Souless, huh?" She asked. Frisk nodded, as I looked down at the ground.

"Listen punk, I trust Frisk. Not you. Cross me, and I will not be hesitant to teach you a lesson." She threatened, pointing at Flowey harshly.

"Undyne... be nice to." Frisk said.

"Whatever Frisk. I'm not scared of this idiot." Flowey said.

"You little-" Undyne started to snarl.

"Listen, I know he's a little brat. Just try not to kill him okay?" I said, cutting her off.

She looked at me and we made eye contact for a few moments.

"Yeah whatever." She sighed rubbing her hand through the front of her hair.

"So this is what you nerds went to do? Get a flower?" She asked.

We nodded. She laughed a little.

"Wow, you guys really are nerds." She said yawning.

"Okay, well, you guys didn't have any trouble did you?"

I looked at Frisk, remembering the creepy guy. Frisk took a long sigh and shook her head.

"No, we were fine." She smiled. Wow, she lied. I guess it was better left unsaid.

"Yeah." I agreed.

"Alright good. Well I'm gonna head up to Al, I think she's still up writing fanficition." She said smiling a little.

"Okay, goodnight Undyne." Frisk said.

"Goodnight." I said.

"Night dorks." Undyne said, headed towards the stairs. When she was finally up the stairs we headed to the kitchen.

"Okay, um Frisk. What's like, our plan of action?"

"I'm not sure. We'll have to tell the others in the morning. And Flowey, do you mind staying in the kitchen by the window?"

"Yeah, whatever." He replied.

"Are you sure?" Frisk asked.

"Yeah." He groaned.

"Okay." She smiled setting him on the window sill.

"Tomorrow we'll have to get up early, to beat the others down here." Frisk explained to me. I nodded sighing.

"What time does Mom usually get up?" I asked.

"I'm not sure. We should probably get up at about 6." I looked at my phone again. 1:07

"Okay." I answered rubbing the back of my head.

"You sure you can run off of 5 hours of sleep?" I asked her. She didn't seem like the type who could handle little sleep. She smiled at me.

"Don't worry about me. I got this."

"Haha, if you say so." I answered.

We headed up to our room and got changed into our pajamas. I slid under my covers and turned onto my side.

"Goodnight Frisk." I whispered to Frisk who was lying in their bed as well.

"Goodnight Chara." She smiled back.
