Chapter 4

"Here, Chara." Frisk said as she handed me a menu. I nodded as I took it.

I scanned through the menu options, but didn't see anything that really interested me. I don't even remember that much what I liked to eat.

I got to the last page and saw "Desserts" printed on the top. Ah, this is more my type of food. I looked down, reading each one carefully. Then I saw the "Coco-Filled Pudding Cake." This, is the one I wanted.

After a few minutes Frisk put her menu down.

"Okay, do you know what you want, Chara?" She asked.

"Mhm." I responded.

"Great! Me too. What do you want?" She asked smiling.

"Coco-Filled Pudding Cake."

"Chara." She said more seriously.

"What?"

"You need real food too."

"Friskkkkk. Whyyy?" I whined. I really wanted that cake.

"Get some real food, and then you can have the cake."

"Why are you so motherly. You've been spending too much time with Tor-Mom." I said picking up the menu again. She laughed.

"Thank you very much. I am going to take that as a compliment Ms. Whiny." She grinned. She's such a dork.

"Uh, I guess I'll get the chicken." I said. She nodded.

"Good plan, chicken's always a good go to. You can't go wrong with chicken." She smiled.

"Yep." I answered.

"Hello, I'm Jenny, I'll be your waitress this evening. Are we all ready to order?" Our waitress greeted pulling out a pen and writing pad. Frisk nodded.

"I'll take the lobster bisque, with a side salad. Ranch on the side for the salad please. And I'll take a strawberry lemonade for a drink please." She smiled closing her menu. Woah.

"And for you ma'am." She asked turning to me.

"Uh, just the chicken tenders please. And a regular lemonade." I said handing her my menu. She took Frisk's finished writing our order.

"Alright, I'll get your order in. Your food should be ready soon." She smiled walking away.

"A lobster bisque?? I don't even know how to spell bisque!" I said to Frisk once the waitress left. She giggled.

"I like lobster a lot too." She added.

"No kidding." I said laughing a little bit.

"If there was cinnamon buns would you gave gotten those instead?" I asked her.

"In a heart beat." She responded. I laughed.

"What?"

"I just never knew someone who would take cinnamon over a lobster bisque." I grinned.

"Haha, I guess I'm pretty unique." She smiled.

After a little while our food came. The chicken was better than I expected, and the lemonade was pretty good too. But finally our meals finished and I got what I was waiting for the entire time.

"Okay ladies, here's your coco-filled pudding cake." I smiled as she placed the glorious dish down.

"Enjoy." She smiled walking away. I grinned at Frisk.

"Should I time you?" She joked.

"If you want." I smirked. I was about to completely dig in when I suddenly realized she might want some. I stopped for a moment and looked up at her.

"Want any?" I asked. She looked kind of surprised, but laughed.

"I feel honored, you, Chara, have offered me a piece of your glorious coco-filled pudding pie." She mocked.

"The offer's only gonna last ten more seconds." I grinned back.

"Wait, wait! I'll have a bite." She laughed. She grabbed her fork and took a piece off from the side. I took a bite from the other side.

"Mmmmm." I said involuntary, indulging the cake.

"Haha, enjoying it huh?" Frisk said taking another bite.

"Mhmmmm." I answered.

"Good, I'm glad." She smiled.

She took another bite.

"It is pretty good." She giggled.

We finished the cake pretty quickly and headed home, stomachs full and bags full of clothes. We got back at about 4.

Undyne and Alphys were standing in the living room as we walked in. They were dressed pretty nicely. Undyne had on a nice white collared shirt and long black pants. Alphys had a purple sparkly dress on. Undyne was pulling on her jacket when she saw us entering the room.

"Hey punks. Where you been?" She asked, adjusting her collar.

Frisk lifted up her bags. I lifted mine up a little, following her lead.

"We went shopping!" Frisk exclaimed.

"Haha, dorks. Chara, I can't believe you were down with that." She responded.

"It was alright. Frisk made it better than I thought it'd be." Frisk smiled a little, looking back to Undyne and Alphys.

"So, why are you two so nicely dressed?" Frisk asked, looking at the both of their outfits.

"Well, what better way than celebrating our new life on the Surface than taking my beautiful girlfriend out to dinner?" Undyne smiled wrapping her arm around Alphys. She blushed deeply. I smiled a slight bit, and caught Frisk smiling a lot. I couldn't blame her. Those two are adorable together.

"Y-Yeah, we're going out t-to eat." She said smiling, looking towards the ground.

"That's so nice you guys. Alphys you look stunning, and Undyne, you look -"

"Very handsome." I interfered grinning.

"Ha-ha. Very funny, dweeb." She mocked back.

"I thought so." I replied, still smirking.

"Well, we better get going. Ready, Al?" Undyne asked turning to face Alphys. She nodded smiling, her blush lightening.

Undyne gave her a quick peck on the lips before they left. After the door shut behind us Frisk giggled.

"They are so cute together!" She said, her voice raising a few octaves.

"Haha, yeah they are." I agreed.

We headed up the stairs to put all our new clothes away. She put all her stuff in the top drawer, and I put all mine in the bottom.

"So... Chara. I was wondering... I wanted you to come on a, um, mission, I guess you could say."  She said closing her drawer.

"Huh?" I asked turning to her.

"Yeah... we haven't saved everyone yet. And it's been bothering me." She said rubbing her arm sitting on her bed. Realizing this was kind of serious I sat across from her, and put my hands together. She looked up at me.

"I need to save Flowey." She stated, determination in her voice.

"F-Flowey?" I... I forgot about Flowey in the past few days...

"Yes. I know it might be hard for you, so I'm okay if you d-"

"No, no. It's fine. I mean, even if Flowey is a little brat. He's stuck down there by himself. We should help him." I said, sadness filling me. He's stuck in the Underground, all by himself. All the monsters gone, he has to just sit there, day after day. I shivered, thinking of the thought. That would've been me if it hadn't been for... Frisk.

"Wow Chara. I'm proud of you. I guess I've rubbed off a little bit, huh?" She asked smiling at me.

"Yeah, yeah..." I said smiling a little too.

"So when did you want to pull of this Mission Impossible type stunt?" I asked her.

"I was planning for tonight, after all the others went to bed. Especially Mom." She answered.

"Oh yeah, good idea. Mom would kill us." I agreed. She nodded a lot.

"Yep, which is why we aren't going to tell her, until after we have Flowey. I feel bad for lying but... it's for now it's for a good reason."

"Don't worry about it, Frisk. You're doing the right thing." I smiled reassuringly.

---

Nighttime fell quickly, as Frisk and I lie awake in our beds.

"Do you think she's fallen asleep yet?" I whispered to Frisk.

"I think so. It's been about a half hour since she went to her room." She whispered back. I took out my phone and checked the time. 10:47.

"It's almost 11, I think we're good." I said, carefully sitting up.

"Okay, you're right. She should be asleep by now."

We as quietly as possible got on our new jackets, and Frisk put on a small, pullstring backpack.

"What's in that?" I asked quietly.

"A rope. Did you really think we are going to take that fall again?" She whispered.

"Ah, good point. Plus I don't feel like hiking through Hotland." I responded.

"Also a good point." She smiled.

"You sure you got that? Want me to carry it?" I offered. She'd done a lot for me. The least I could do is carry a backpack.

"Chara. It's a rope." She said in a very "duh" type tone. I laughed a little.

"But. You can carry this." She said going behind our computer desk. She grunted a little as she pulled out a shovel.

"Here you go." She handed me the shovel. It was an alright weight, it was heavy, but I'm pretty strong.

"Alright, thanks." I said, happy to be carrying something.

"Don't we need a pot or something to put him in?" I asked, going over how the situation would play out in my head.

"Yep!" She answered back, pulling out a pot from under her bed.

"Jeez, Frisk. How long have you been planning this?" I asked her.

"Hm, how long have we been on the Surface?" She asked.

"I don't know, a few days." I shrugged, too lazy to actually determine the number of days.

"Then a few days." She smiled putting the pot into her bag. I guess she didn't want it to get destroyed if she put it in the bag earlier with the rope.

"Haha, I see." I answered heading towards the door.

"We all good then?" I asked, thinking about the playout one more time in my head.

"Yep! We have everything." She smiled. With the flick of the lights and the close of the door we were out and headed downstairs. The lights were off, and we walked slowly, trying to avoid creaking anything.

Frisk slowly turned the knob when out of nowhere-

"Where you guys goin'?" Undyne.

I started to panic, and I could tell Frisk started to sweat a little herself too.

"U-Um..." I stuttered.

"Hey Undyne, we thought you went to bed...?" Frisk asked, avoiding her question.

"I did, then I realized I hadn't done my regular workout for the day. Stretching, 200 sit-ups, 200 push-ups, and 100 weight lifts with my 20 pounders. But back to the topic, whatcha guys doin'?" She grinned, clearly having fun messing with us.

After a few moments of awkward silence when Frisk sighed.

"Well, as long as you promise not to tell Mom, we are going t-"

"Nah dork, I'm just messing with you. I don't want to pry into your personal business. Just be careful okay? Let me know when you get back and give me a ring if you punks need anything. From what I've seen on tv, nighttime on the Surface can be kind of dangerous, so stay out of trouble. Andddd if trouble finds you... well..."

She held her left hand out to the side, and a flaming blue spear appeared in it.

"It wouldn't be fun for the trouble." She grinned.

Frisk smiled, and relief filled us both.

"Thanks, Undyne. Glad we can count on you." Frisk said.

"You're welcome you dweebs. Have fun doin' whatever your doin'." She said, picking up her weights as the sharp blue spear disappeared into thin air.

"Goodbye Undyne." Frisk whispered, heading out the door.

"Thanks Undyne, see you later." I said following out behind Frisk. I shut the door behind us quietly.

"That was close." I scoffed adjusting my jacket collar. Frisk was right about the cold, my breath was vivid against the very dark night.

"Yeah." Frisk said sighing.

"It's so pretty at night." She said softly looking up into the sky. I looked up, the bright stars painted across the sky. It actually was really pretty.

"Yeah, it is." I agreed looking back down towards the ground.

"It's so amazing... Everything. From things as beautiful as the nighttime sky to things as simple as the green grass under our feet. It's all just so..." She trailed off, memorized by everything. I looked at her, kind of in awe. That sentence, she's just so... nevermind.

With the mood shifted I gave her a slight smile.

"It is." She smiled back at me.

We continued walking, my feet dragging across the ground. A few cars passed every now and then, their headlights lighting up our backs for a few moments until they eventually passed.

"Frisk." I said, looking towards her. She looked at me, blue eyes vibrant, even in the dark of night.

"Um, thanks. For... everything." I stuttered. I could feel my face blush, so I looked towards the ground, a little embarrassed. Saying thanks isn't exactly something I do that often, nor comes easy to me.

She froze for a moment, before smiling warmly.

"Chara, you're welcome. I'd do anything for you." She said. I looked up at her.

"But, you barely know me." I stated, kind of confused.

"You were with me, talking to me through thoughts the entire time I was in the Underground, remember?" She asked. I nodded slightly, still kind of confused. Memories recollected in my mind, I shivered trying to shake them off.

"Yeah, but... I was g-genocidal, back then..." I replied quietly, struggling to say the word. More memories flashed through my vision, pain stabbing my chest.

Although I looked confused and concerned, she just continued smiling at me.

"Yes Chara. But, I knew all along you were good. So even if you were saying... unpleasant things, I just kept smiling. I knew you could be saved. You've always been good, just too-"

"Too locked up in fear of facing pain and heartache." I cut her off, looking at the ground once again. Silence fell for a moment, and I felt the pain grow stronger. It was the first time I was really honest with someone.

"Chara." Frisk said stopping, grabbing me by my shoulders, just like she had done when she saved me.

"You're not locked up anymore, that's what matters." She smiled. I gave her my slight smile back. Her words seemed to heal the intense pain in my chest.

"Yeah, I guess so." I answered. She squeezed my shoulders reassuringly.

"Alright, now let's go save Flowey." She said, continuing to walk. I continued walking beside her, my brain overriding with thoughts. The shovel slung at my side, scraping the ground every now and then.

"Hey!" I heard someone call. I looked up, and saw that Frisk heard the voice too.

"Uh, Frisk. Do you know wh-"

"Hey! Girls!" The voice was closer now, we saw an oncoming car, and realized the driver was shouting at us.

"Frisk, who's this guy?" I whispered to her.

"I'm not sure, I can't see him." She whispered back. The guy pulled up beside us. He looked middle-aged, had a reddish brown beard with a red baseball cap on.

"Hey ladies." He said to us. We stopped and turned to greet him.

"H-Hi, can I help you?" Frisk asked. She sounded friendly as usual, but I could tell she was nervous. The whole situation didn't feel right.

"Maybe." He smirked, smacking his gum. I narrowed my eyes at him. I didn't like the looks of this guy.

"It was a yes or no question." I hissed.

"Chara!" Frisk whispered to me.

"Ooo, seems I've got a feisty one on my hands." He grinned. His smile made me extremely uncomfortable and angry.

"A very feisty one. Now I'd suggest you tell us, what you want." I spat, anger taking over my fear of the situation.

"Mm-mm. I love a girl who's got a mouth on her." He said. I immediately felt disgusted and ten times more uncomfortable. Frisk gasped at his response, stepping back a little. I stepped in front of her, making direct eye contact, not letting this guy's creepy remarks break me down.

"Leave." I said cold and menacing.

"Well, honey. I don't know if I can do that."

"Excuse me?... Honey?" I asked, stepping dangerously close to the car.

"Chara! Get back!" Frisk cried from behind me.

"What's wrong sugar plum? Don't like when a guy take an interest in that sweet ass? Your friend there too has got quite the body" He grinned, looking around me to see Frisk, winking as he did so.

"LEAVE!" I yelled my voice taking on a demonic undertone. My eyes and mouth disappeared and were replaced with a black melting goo, my face becoming red and heated.

His face turned to horror as he panicked to press down on the gas pedal, soon skidding down the road, quickly leaving my field of vision.

I stood for a moment, giving myself a chance to leave genocide mode. After a few seconds I knew my face was back to normal, I turned to face Frisk. Her face was red, horrified, and frozen.

"Oh my god, Frisk. I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to do genocide, I just wanted to sca-"

"No, no. It's okay, Chara." She replied, shaking. She was holding her arms, clearly shaken by the guy's disgusting remarks.

I walked closer to her.

"A-Are you okay?" I asked sincerely, worry filling me.

Her eyes were closed, as she continued to shake. After a few moments her shaking calmed, as she took a deep breath. She opened her eyes, and gave me a slight, broken looking smile.

"Y-Yeah. I'm just... he made me feel, uncomfortable." Her eyes were watery, but a tear never escaped them.

"Yeah, I know. Don't worry, you've had my back up until now. It's time I return the favor. I'm here for you, okay?" I said, sounding sort of pleadingly. I wasn't very good at being sentimental and sincere, but I was trying, for Frisk.

"Thanks Chara." She smiled a little more warmly.

"How about I walk on the outside of the curb?" I asked. She nodded smiling gratefully, and slowly started to walk again. I walked along beside her, watching each car as it drove by.

I sighed. It sucked to see people like that sick fuck. People like him are the reason I began to hate humanity. I looked at Frisk.

And she's the reason I've began to restore faith in humanity.
