♤ Run ♤
Description:
I was told one thing.
Run.
Run and don't look back. Don't stop for anyone.
I was told to run for my life, never stopping always on the move. It was the only way I could survive.
It was hunt or be hunted and I was the prey to their hunt.
Prologue:
8 years old.
It was just a normal day. Me and mommy were playing in the garden.
"Mommy, look out!! There's a bee!" I squeal and jump behind her. She just laughs.
"Darling, bees cannot see you if you don't move." She giggles to herself.
"Okay, so like a T-Rex? RAWWWW" I stomp about growling like a dinosaur.
"I think you've been watching to much Jurassic Park missy!" She says laughing once again.
"No mommy! I love Jurassic Park. I'm a hungry dinosaur and I'm going to eat you!" I say and pretend to bite mommy's arm. She screams and runs away.
For about 10 minutes I chase her around the garden. She finally sits down and asks me to sit with her so I do. I sit on her lap as she reads me a story, twirling my hair in her finger.
It's my favourite. Snow White. I like all the little people with funny names, Snow White's little friends, but Snow White is my favourite. I mean, she is a princess.
"Mommy? Am I going to be a princess when I'm a big girl?" I ask. I see a twinkle in her eye and suddenly I'm scared of her answer.
"No. You're going to be an troll." She whispers in my ears and then starts tickling me.
"No... no mommy... stop... ahhh it tickles" I roll around, wriggling, trying to get out of her grip.
"What's the magic word?" She asks.
"Abracadabra." I reply. She softly chuckles to herself.
"No, try again sweetie."
"I don't know mommy. That's the only magic word I know." I say, using my puppy dog eyes on her.
"It's please. Now say it again." She says, as she starts to tickle me again.
"Mommy please stop, it tickles." I say whilst laughing.
"Okay, but only because you said please." She stops tickling me.
She finishes reading me the book and then we decide to go inside as it's getting dark.
"We have one hour and then it's your bedtime missy." She says and taps my nose, as she sits down on the couch.
I'm about to join her but remember the drawing I drew for her at school.
"Wait mommy, I have something for you."
I run upstairs and go into my room. I go up to my desk and grab the paper. It's a drawing of me and mommy and daddy. Our dog Jewel is in the picture too. We are all at the park, having a good time.
I walk downstairs, I don't want to run and ruin the picture. It's special for mommy. I walk into the room.
"Mommy, look what I have." I say, trying to find where she is hiding in the room.
But I can't breathe.
I try, but I'm gasping for precious air and not one ounce of air is filling my lungs.
My voice is strangled as I try to find my mom.
There is a dark fog that fills my throat that taste burnt. The room is glowing orange and red. The colours dance for dominance as they ravage the room.
Fire.
"Mommy!" I yell, chocking on the smoke that invaded my lungs.
I see her curled up in a corner. The fire is approaching her but she isn't moving.
I run up to her. Desperate to get her attention. She just looks at me, but doesn't say anything as I try to heave her up. She doesn't budge.
"Mommy please!" I beg.
"Darling, you have to go. Take this." She coughs as she passes me a necklace. The one she always wears.
"No mommy, don't leave me, not like daddy and Jewel." I'm screaming now, crying hysterically.
"Baby girl, they will find you if you stay here. Run baby. Run and don't ever look back, don't stop for no one. You cannot let them catch you." She manages to say before coughing again.
"Mommy, I don't want to leave you. Mommy tell me who is coming. I can stop them."
She just smiles and holds my face. "I know you can, now go." Her eyes close shut and I watch the colour drain from her face. Her hair turn dry. Her body goes limp. She's gone. She left me, just like daddy.
I clutch the necklace in my hand and I run. I run and I run and don't ever look back.
