Chapter 6: Place to Stay

I woke up with a police officer staring at me.

"Excuse me young man, are you Zach Newman?" the officer asked.

"Yeah." I said, getting up from the chair. I looked to my right and saw Jessica was still sleeping in the chair.

"Let's talk inside." I said.

"Alright." the officer said. We walked inside the house and I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"We've had reports of you in multiple locations in the past two months and only just after you returned home from being held captive from an unknown group. Care to explain?" the officer asked, crossing her arms.

"I went traveling." I said.

"Then why did that girl outside put out missing posters?" she asked, leaning her head in the direction of Jessica then straightening her head.

"I didn't tell anyone I was leaving." I said.

"Why?" the officer asked sternly.

"I don't know why, but I just attract bad things." I said, pushing myself off the kitchen counter with the back of my hip.

"So, these so called bad things, what are they specifically?" the officer asked me.

"People." I said.

The officer sighed and walked towards me. "Look, we both know what happened to you and that young lady's parents. Just give us some time to figure it out. We'll also need to put you two in a foster home unless you have somewhere else to stay." the officer said with a hand on my shoulder.

"My sister's staying with a friend of her's. Though, I doubt she'd want me and Jess there." I said.

"Why's that?" the officer asked with a confused look on her face.

"She thinks she can't look after people, let alone me." I said.

"Does she blame herself for your kidnapping?" the officer asked.

"Yeah, she does. I don't know why though, I mean, I can't blame her for what she did." I said. The door behind us opened and Jessica was standing in the doorway.

After talking a little more, the officer left Jessica and I to discuss what we were going to do.

"Well, what're we gonna do?" Jessica asked me.

"We really have no other choice to go to a foster home unless we can convince Katelyn to let us stay with her and her friends." I said, leaning on a chair.

"Well, then let's go." Jessica suggested.

"Alright." I said, pushing myself off the chair.

We got to the house where Katelyn was staying and I knocked on the door. Jason answered the door and let us in.

"Katelyn? Where are ya?" I called out. Katelyn came down the stairs and stopped in front of me.

"What do you need?" she asked.

"We need a place to stay. If we don't have one, we'll got to a foster home." I said.

"Wait, seriously?" Katelyn asked.

"Yeah, an officer talked to us earlier." I said.

"Zach, what did mom and dad tell you about talking to strangers?" Katelyn asked.

"It was an officer of the law. That's different." I said. Katelyn sighed.

"Fair enough." she said.

"So, we allowed to stay her or what?" I asked.

"I'll discuss it with my friends." she said. I nodded and she went off to discuss the situation with her friends.

After a while, Katelyn came back. "They said you could stay, but on one condition." Katelyn said.

"Which is?" Jessica asked worriedly.

"Don't bother us when we're doing stuff." Katelyn said.

"Well, that's easy. So, is that it?" I asked.

"Yeah, basically." Katelyn said.

"Alright. I'll go get my stuff." Jessica said going out the door.

Katelyn glares at me and I arch and eyebrow.

"What's with the glare?" I asked her.

"I can't believe you asked to move in!" Katelyn exclaimed.

"Well, sorry about that, but I had no other choice." I said. Katelyn scoffed and walked towards me.

"You know how I feel about you being around me." Katelyn said.

"I know, but again, I had no other choice." I said.

"Fine, make yourself at home. But do NOT go in my room." Katelyn stated.

"Alright." I said. I sighed and walked back outside to wait for Jessica to get back.
