A bat flew out of my bedroom window

I don't believe in magic.

Or superheroes.

Or monsters.

Most especially vampires.

I mean, how can a human suddenly achieve immortality by getting bitten by a bat. Science hasn't even reached that yet. According to Twilight, vampires can go out in the sun, but it will reveal their true selves. FGM says that vampires are a kind of alien who adapted to our world.

There are many versions of vampires in movies and books across the globe. But one thing is clear, and vampires aren't real. They are just a figment of our imagination and for good measure too. Because if they were to exist, they would also have our human nature. Our greed, selfishness, dishonesty, and other wrong values, could also have our good qualities as well, but there is more bad than good in this world. So no luck won't be on our side.

We probably are wiped out within a year or two. So maybe science shouldn't dabble into it either, to be safe.

"And I'm finished," I exclaim as I finish typing my newspaper report.

Devon, our clubhead, came over as he peered at my report.

A smile formed on his lips, "great job," he said, looking at me.

I blushed and mumbled, "Thanks," as I scrambled to pack my things, aware of his gaze on me.

"Devon," Tana called as she batted her eyes flirtatiously while casually flicking her red hair over her shoulder. Yes, people, my worst enemy is in my newspaper club. No, she doesn't have a rich dad, nor did she use her popularity to worm her way in. She's good at writing; that's the only thing we have in common.

Oh, and yes, there's another thing too: Devon. This brings us back to the part where I try not to roll my eyes at Tana's sorry attempt to flirt with Devon.

Devon walks over to Tana as he inspects her work" great job save for a few mistakes here, here, and..here". He says, pointing at the eyelash hanging from her eyelid.

I fail to hold in my laughter as I laugh to the point of tears. Devon, who had a severe expression on his face, was beginning to smile a little.

Tana, who had no clue what was happening, huffed in annoyance as she picked her emerald-cloured bag and sashayed out of the room. The others had already gone home, so it was just Devon and me. My heart beat furiously as uncomfortable silence filled the room. We were picking up the stray papers while subconsciously glancing at each other.

I reach for a paper just as Devon comes for it too. Our hands touch but instead of moving it away. We stayed like that, staring at each other. He leaned in, our lips almost touching when the door suddenly opened; we moved away from each other as Tana walked in fear evident on her face.

I move towards her "Tana, what's wrong?"

"I tried to open the front door b-b-but-"

"But what?" Devon asked,

" It's locked."

I paced up and down, trying to figure a way to get us out of here, while Tana was hyperventilating into a brown paper bag I found in the lobby. Devon was calmly eating his granola bar, stopping once in a while to take a sip from his water bottle. It was oddly satisfying watching him as his lips moved up and down, his face furrowed in concentration. He noticed me staring at him, and he smiled; I smile back, my face heating up as I looked away.

An idea pops into my head" I may have an idea."

" Well..." Tana says as she throws the paper bag on the floor," What is it?"

" First, Tana, I'm going to need your credit card."

" Nope, not happening."

" Aw, come on, please,"  Devon pleads.

She sighs and hands it over, and in a couple of minutes, the door finally opens.

" Yes," we exclaim, giving each other high fives.

" Now, I don't know about you guys, but I'm exhausted," I said, stifling a yawn.

" I agree," Tana says.

" See ya," I say, leaving them behind.

I enter my room when I see something move. It's a small black creature, it flies towards me, and I scream. I stand there until it flies out.

Okay, I'm going to take my bat to bed with me tonight...on second thought, my dictionary seems just as formidable.

Not too far away from Hali's house, a black minivan is parked outside. Three figures are inside.

" Do you think she's the one?" a female voice asks.

" She passed the test, didn't she? a male voice replies.

" But she-"

" I know you're worried, but she'll be fine. Boss says she is suitable to be the next one." the male figure glances at the tall figure in the backseat who just stares out the window quietly.

" I guess you're right, Boss is never wrong."

"Exactly. The subject arrives tomorrow. Project M has begun."
