Chapter 24
With my head against the table, I simply stared at Zane's face. I sat there in silence for hours, just waiting for Zane to finally wake up. In that time, the boys have frequently come by to check up on me and chat a bit.
It seems while I've been in here, they've been explaining things to everyone else. I guess that's a good thing. I don't want to be bombarded with questions as soon as I leave the room.
Without a clock, I had no idea what time it was now. I assumed that it was really late by the tired feeling that took over me. My eyes grew weary and my eyelids drooped. But I didn't care.
I would patiently wait for Zane's eyes to finally open. The sudden sound of the door forced me to lift my head and turn to see who it was. It was Jeff.
"Jeff?"
Jeff's eyes were fixed on Zane as he casually came over. "Anything yet?"
I slowly shook my head and turned my gaze back to Zane. It grew quiet until I tiredly yawned.
"Maybe you should get some rest, Changeling," Jeff suddenly said to me.
"I don't need rest."
"Sure you don't," he replied in a sarcastic tone. "Then how about a snack, or maybe a drink?"
I sighed. "I don't really feel like eating."
"You must be really worried about him, huh?"
"Of course I am. He's one of my boys. If I ever lost one of them, I'd...I..."
I couldn't even finish my sentence. I felt my eyes beginning to water again. I quickly wiped my eyes, not wanting Jeff to see me cry. I then felt his hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry so much, Changeling. Just give him some time, I'm sure he's going to be fine."
His hand left my shoulder and I heard him walking back over to the door. "I'm heading to bed. Just so you know, the others are sleeping on the couch."
I gave a faint nod, hearing the door open and close afterwards. I yawned again and rubbed my tired eyes. I laid my head back down on the table. I took one more look at Zane's face before letting my eyes finally shut.
Jeff's pov
The next morning, we all sat in the living room, waiting for breakfast to be ready. Joker and Ben were both playing games while Somber and Mute sat quietly and watched.
These three are quite the group. I suddenly saw a figure enter the room out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head, as did everyone else, to see Changeling.
Joker almost immediately jumped up and ran over to her, wrapping her in his arms and lifting her up off the floor.
"Changeling! You finally decided to join us!"
She struggled to get out of his grip. "Can't...breath...put me down...Joker!"
He finally set her back on her feet and released her. Somber then jumped into the conversation.
"Does this mean Wrath is...?"
Changeling turned her gaze to the floor and answered, "No. He still hasn't woken up."
She then looked up at all of us and gave a small smile. But I figured I should come out and enjoy some time with the rest of you."
"Breakfast is ready!" Slender called from the kitchen.
We all headed to the kitchen. On the way, I gave Changeling a pat on the shoulder.
"Glad to have you join us this morning."
"Thanks," she replied with a smile.
We all sat in the kitchen and started eating. Changeling and her group had plates of nothing but sausage and bacon. Joker was scarfing down his food and suddenly turned to Changeling beside him.
"Hey, wouldn't it be funny if the smell of our food woke Zane up?"
Everyone, including myself, turned and stared at him. Did I just hear him right? Did he say Zane? Upon seeing everyone looking at him, he quickly covered his mouth.
Changeling suddenly smiled and placed a hand on his arm. "It's alright. We can trust them enough to tell them our real names."
Almost instantly, her appearance changed. She still looked the same, but normal. Her skin was a normal peach color and her hair was now brown while her gold eyes turned a bright green.
"My name...my real name is Marlow. This is Paul, Jasper, and Oliver. Our wounded friend that you know as Wrath, his real name is Zane."
The three boys shifted their appearances to look normal, just like Change-I mean Marlow. Slenderman then spoke.
"Well it's a pleasure to meet you all...again."
We all finished up our breakfast before heading back to the living room. Marlow stretched her arms out and plopped down on the couch.
"So," she began, "about the Nighthunters. Do you think we got them all?"
I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know. I guess we'll just have to see if we find any more."
"There must me more," Masky suddenly interrupted. "One of them told us before that they had a lab full of those dogs."
"Then they must have a facility somewhere," Jasper said in his monotone voice.
Slender then said, "We will continue our search and take care of any remaining camps and facilities they may have. There shouldn't be that many left. Tonight, we shall continue with our current mission."
Slender disappeared, leaving the rest of us alone. I watched as the three boys all sat around Marlow on the couch. The rest of us took a seat and Ben suddenly grinned.
"Well at least now I have a new gamer buddy."
Paul mimicked Ben's grin and said, "You got that right. We can play games, watch TV, maybe pull a prank or two."
Ben's grin seemed to widen. "Oh yeah! Now you're talking! You and I are going to be the best of friends, Paul."
I watched as the quiet guy, Oliver, tugged on Marlow's sleeve and mumbled something to her. She smiled and nodded before looking over at Ben.
"Hey, Ben, is it alright if Oliver borrows your laptop?"
"Yeah, sure. No problem."
Ben got up and went upstairs. After a few minutes, he came back down with his laptop in hand and passed it over to Oliver before sitting back down. Oliver pushed up his glasses and quickly started typing and clicking.
Jack suddenly tilted his head and asked, "If I may ask, how exactly did all of you come together in the first place?"
Marlow let out a sigh. "It's kind of a long story."
"You could tell it anyway," Jasper chimed in with a small smile on his lips. "We love your stories. There's so much death in them."
Paul nodded in agreement. "Yeah. Come on, Marlow, tell them the story."
She chuckled slightly and replied, "Fine. Where do I begin? Oh, I know. I'm guessing all of you have seen the footage of me slaughtering a small store of people, right?"
We all gave small nods and she continued, "Well, that was all an accident. It was right after I gained my power. With my black blood on my hands and face, I lost control over my Nightstalker form. I was so overwhelmed that I went on a small rampage and killed everyone in the store."
She then glanced at Paul, Jasper, and Oliver. "Or so I thought. Turns out my blood is like poison. Everyone I scratched or bit died from my blood entering their body. Except these four. They somehow overcame the poisoning effect and survived. But then, they started to become like me and they were thrown into an asylum for it."
Jasper suddenly joined in the story, "Marlow came in and broke us out, gave us a home, and treated us like family. We owe her our lives."
I slowly nodded my head in understanding. "Ah, now it all makes sense. And what about that little mansion you call home? How did you ever get a place like that?"
Marlow grinned and leaned forward, resting her head on her hand. "I inherited it. You see, I once worked as a servant there. But after I killed off my master, the whole place and everything in it went to me."
Ben suddenly smirked at her. "You were a maid? I bet your master had a fun time with you, huh?"
A low growl erupted from her throat as she sent him a glare. "He wasn't that kind of guy. But he was very abusive. He's the one who gave me this."
She pointed to the scar over her left eye. Damn, she had it rough. No wonder she snapped. Oliver suddenly tapped her arm. She turned her attention to the screen of the laptop and smiled.
"Nice job, Oliver," she ruffled his hair before looking at all of us. "Seems there's been a news report on the massive slaughter of the hunter's camp. Fear of the Nightstalkers is spreading like wildfire."
Paul grinned. "Nice! I don't think anyone else is going to want to be a Nighthunter after that."
Jasper calmly said, "Nope."
After awhile of chatting, watching TV, and playing video games, Marlow quietly got up from her seat and headed back to the medical room.
