Chapter 10

A/N: In the picture is Paul.

Ugh, this is ridiculous. Two days of searching and still no idea who or what's been trespassing in our woods. I sighed as I walked up to the front door of my house.

I stood there, gazing up at the moon and stars. I don't get it. How could anything be able to hide so well from us? We've searched our area of the forest and tried finding information in town and still can't find out anything.

Approaching footsteps snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked to see Zane and Jasper walking over to me.

"Find anything?" I asked them.

Zane sighed and shook his head. "Nothing."

"Hey, guys. We couldn't find crap. I don't suppose any of you had any luck."

We all turned to see Paul and Oliver heading toward us. I let out a loud sigh.

"Nope," I answered the brown haired boy.

It grew quiet until I smiled at them and said, "You all did your best though. How about we head over to Burger King for a break? Chicken nuggets are on me."

The boys all smiled and nodded. Before I could move, I felt a tug on my sleeve. I turned and looked at Oliver.

"Um, Marlow, would it be okay if I bring my laptop? I could maybe search for information while we eat."

Oliver's quiet voice caused me to smile at him. "I think that's a great idea. Go ahead, go get it."

With a small grin, Oliver rushed inside, soon coming back with his laptop in hand. Together, we walked down the streets all the way to Burger King. Going inside, the place was almost completely empty.

I ordered several things of chicken nuggets and fries along with our drinks before we went to sit down. I quickly got my drink and sat at a booth with Zane in front of me. Paul rushed over with his drink in hand and sat next to Zane. Jasper came and sat next to me while Oliver squashed in with Zane and Paul.

As soon as we got our food, we dug in. Oliver was already on his laptop while he ate. I grabbed a nugget and sank my teeth into it.

"Well I hope you all enjoy. This is your reward for working so hard lately."

I immediately noticed a small smile on Jasper's lips. "Wow, thanks. This is a nice little reward."

"Yeah," Paul butted into the conversation. "Especially since we don't have to hunt this time. I think I'd be too tired to catch anything."

I noticed Zane roll his eyes and mutter, "Wimp."

Paul shot him a quick glare before pigging out on more nuggets. I couldn't help but laugh a little. These guys can be so entertaining.

I suddenly noticed two people come in the front door. Both males in yellowish orange hoodies. The weird part was that one wore a white mask with black features while the other wore some kind of black cloth-like mask with red eyes and mouth.

Did these guys just come from a costume party or what? I kept an eye on them as they quickly ordered drinks, but didn't seem to get anything else. I was about to take another bite of my nugget when they passed our table.

I froze as a familiar scent caught my nose. I sniffed the air, taking a quick glance back at them as they sat a few tables away. No way. It can't be. Them?!

"What's up, Marlow?"

I looked over at Zane as he watched me with slight concern. "Those two guys. Their scents are identical to some of the ones we found in the woods."

Paul suddenly yelled, "What?!"

I quickly grabbed his collar and yanked him forward slightly while quietly saying, "Shh, keep it down."

After releasing him, he went back to stuffing his face. Zane's gaze traveled past me as he narrowed his eyes slightly.

"They keep looking this way," he whispered to me.

"Then just act casual."

It grew quiet as we ate. I don't want to seem suspicious to those two. Something just doesn't seem right. There's no way they can be normal people, not with their odd scents. Surprisingly, Jasper was the one to break the silence.

"I wonder if those two are aware of us."

"I wouldn't think so," Zane answered him.

I added in, "They were probably looking this way because SOMEONE can't keep quiet."

"Hey! It's not my fault!"

With Paul's mouth full, pieces of food and spit flew onto Jasper and me. I grabbed a napkin and began furiously scrubbing my face.

"Say it don't spray it, Paul! Didn't anyone ever teach you not to talk with your mouth full?!"

I looked over at Jasper to see him frozen with a fry hanging out of his mouth. His neutral expression never changed, not even from something like this.

"Eww," he calmly said while grabbing a napkin.

After wiping his face off, Oliver's quiet voice cut in, "I think I found something."

His eyes met mine, as if asking if he should show us anything with those strangers around. I gave a slight nod to him. He then turned his laptop around to face me.

I looked at the screen with Jasper, Zane, and Paul moving closer to see. On the screen was some kind of news report. The headline read, "More sightings, multiple Nightstalkers?".

I began reading some of it aloud for the others. "Sightings of the mysterious beast are becoming more and more frequent. The creature that has been named "Nightstalker" has been living up to its reputation. Recent evidence has given us clues that there could be more than just one of them."

I then saw that they had pictures and a couple of videos. All of the pictures showed a black blur, like usual. I then saw that one of the videos was from the night I attacked everyone in the store.

I noticed Zane's eyes dart past me and he whispered, "Those two seem to be watching and listening."

I smirked slightly. "Then let's play the videos for them."

I clicked on the first one to begin the video. All was quiet as we watched the lady in the grocery store. The sound of glass breaking broke the silence and the air was suddenly filled with screams.

Just like before, a black blur, zipped past the camera, leaving the woman dead. Once silence fell, the blur zoomed past the camera again and then the video ended. I then went down to the second video, clicking on it and letting it play.

This one showed a man with glasses looking straight into the camera as he spoke. "Okay. I have set up cameras 1, 2, 3, and 4 across the woods. Hopefully I can capture footage of the elusive Nightstalker."

I remember, this happened about half a week ago. We discovered that man and killed him, then we destroyed the cameras. But I had no idea the footage had been recovered. We watched as the screen was split into four, showing four different areas of the forest.

The time skipped ahead until the sun had gone down. Once it became dark, low growls were heard from camera 1, where the man was waiting. He looked around in fear until a large blur jumped out from the darkness. The man let out a scream as he was quickly drug off screen. Then all grew quiet and the first camera suddenly went black.

The second camera caught a blur rushing toward it and a glint of a gold eye before going black. The third was the same, another blur before being disabled. The only one left was the fourth one.

That is, until it was knocked off the tree it was attached to. It was still on even after hitting the ground. At least until large, dark fangs enclosed around it, causing the camera to finally shut off and the video to end.

With Zane taking another glance behind me, I figured those two boys were still watching and listening. I leaned back in my seat, stretching my arms.

"Well that was interesting. Looks like they have some footage of the Nightstalker, or should I say Nightstalkers."

Paul shivered a little. "That's creepy. Remind me to never go near the woods at night."

"I think they're pretty cool," Jasper calmly stated.

"I agree," Zane said with a grin. "It would be really cool to actually see them."

I smirked slightly. "Then you'd be dead. Come on, let's get out of here."

Oliver quickly shut his laptop and we all stood and threw away our trash. As we left, I glanced back to see those two guys still at their table.

Masky's pov

After that group left, I looked at Hoodie across from me. "Did you hear all of that?"

He nodded. "Yeah."

"Do you think these Nightstalkers are what's been scaring the Rake?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe. Too bad we couldn't get a better look at those videos."

I grinned slightly and said, "No problem. Ben could probably find it now that we know what to look for."

"Odd that we've never seen these creatures before."

"I know. Yet all these people and even the Rake has seen them."

It grew quiet until another question popped into my head. "Hey, Hoodie, did that group seem kind of strange to you?"

"What do you mean? They looked like a normal group of friends hanging out to me."

"But how many times have you seen a nerd, a jock, a punk, and a goth hanging out together?"

He seemed to think for a minute before answering, "I guess that is a bit weird."

"And then that girl. Something just seemed off about her."

After a moment of silence, I shook the thoughts from my head. "Or maybe I'm just over thinking it. Let's head home and tell the others about this."
