Prologue

I jumped and tackled Woobie, barking in glee. I rolled him onto his back and lightly bit his ear, careful not to use my sharp fangs on the tender flesh.

"Who's more dominant now?" I heard Millenia bark behind us, teasing Woobie.

He gave a light frown as I stood above him, staring into his eyes grinning. I wagged my tail as he gave a light chuckle. He gave a light smirk before flipping me onto my back. He smirked again, "I am."

I squirmed beneath his strong grip.

"You forget I had K9 Training." His warm eyes soothed me and I stuck me tongue out to mock him.

I stood up and shook my pelt after he moved with a gentle laugh. "Cheater." I growled playfully.

"How did I cheat?"

"You have your ways, Woobie." Millenia answered for me. I nodded, agreeing with my best friend. A silent howl rose above the night. As we waited for the howl to end, Millenia howled back, then Woobie, then I. Every night a wolf howled, we would howl back in the order of who had more wolf blood than the rest. Millenia was full wolf, giving her the right to howl first. Woobie is half wolf, half husky, so he howled second, and finally, I howl last because I have no wolf blood in me.

We all laughed after we ended our howl and there was no response.

"We should get some rest, we have been up all day and most of last night." I barked and brushed my head beneath Millenia's chest.

"I have pulled plenty of all-nighters and gotten up early with you girls before." Woobie bragged with a cute smirk.

"Woobie, shut up and go to sleep." I barked with a humorous snort. He mocked me and stuck his tongue out in a playful manner before laying his head down on his paws.

A few minutes later, his shallow breathing slowed into the rhythm of sleep.

"See you in the morning." I yawned and curled up, my muzzle buried into my fur as I too, drifted off to sleep. Millenia curled beside me, her muzzle on my back. Her breath ran through my fur and soothed my skin and I let sleep take over.

As morning came I was the first to wake up. Something didn't feel right. It wasn't because of my dream last night, but my fur just tingled. It wasn't the frosty winter morning air, it was something else... Normally I sleep in later than the other two. "Rei... is everything okay?" I turned as Woobie's voice pulled me from my thoughts.

"You're up early and that doesn't happen unless you had a bad dream..." Millenia yawned as she shook frost out of her thick fur.

"I did have a horrid dream." I mumbled as I decided not to tell them about the bad feeling I had.

"Go on then, tell us." I looked at them both as they sat down waiting for me to tell them. I sighed and began to explain my dream.

"We were all three walking around town as we normally did every day. Some Corgi with the name Scissor came running up to us asking for help because he couldn't find his sister and he explained to us that there was a new dogcatcher in town. He said that he and his sister normally got caught and always helped each other escape but when he went to the pound she wasn't there. After we agreed to help we followed Scissor to his home were we were attacked by a man wearing dark colors who definitely was not a dog person. He had a net and a silver dog whistle. He blew it as soon as he saw us and we all fell to the floor at the painful sound... and-"

"But dog whistles don't always effect you." Millenia stated.

"Yes, that is what makes this dream different and weird. As I was saying, I tried to be the hero once more and tried to protect Scissor from the man who seemed intent on catching a Corgi. He pulled a gun out of no where and shot me. I then woke up."

"That isn't a normal every-night dream..." Woobie tilted his head as he seemed to be slightly confused.

"That is what I mean. It was almost as if I could feel the bullet."

"It was only a dream, there is nothing to worry about now." Woobie soothed. I turned my attention to Millenia as she stood up and stretched. "Let's go find some food and get our minds off of this awful subject." I nodded hesitantly as I followed her as she has the best nose out of us three.

After about twenty minutes of walking around town in search of food, we decided to rest somewhere out of the cold. I trailed behind the two as we walked in a somewhat straight line. I still can't get that stupid dream out of my head and I can't help but picture my lifeless body laying on the ground. My pelt was tingling at the thought and guilt bubbled inside of me as I questioned my own loyalty to my friends. I don't know if I should tell them or if I should just take the risk of this awful feeling to be true.

We stopped moving and I almost ran into Woobie as he was facing me. Did he ask me a question? I was so carried away in my thoughts that I wasn't paying attention to the world around me. "W-what?" I asked.

"I said, you should lead the group since you don't do much and it could get your mind away from whatever is troubling you."

"I really don't want to. I-"

"C'mon Rei, just lead us to somewhere warm. Maybe you could be better than Woobie at this and he could be the one with a missing skill!" Millenia pleaded after trying to back him up, but I didn't hear her previous comment.

"Fine." I padded to the front of the group and led them around town for a little bit. I greeted every dog that we passed. After about ten minutes something seemed to draw me towards a dark alley way. Maybe this was a place we could stop and Millenia was right?

I led them into the alley with caution. Woobie sat down first and Millenia immediately began to lick her paws to sooth their pain. We haven't walked this much in a long time so we all must be sore. A shadow caught my attention on the wall and I swung around. There was a tall man with a net standing at the entry and only exit. I growled and waited for Millenia and Woobie to notice. When they did they quickly stood up next to me and snarled louder than I did.

"More puppies... Benny!" a large St. Bernard stepped out from the shadows and stood next to the man. He was large and was covered in muscles.

"Which one of you should we take? Or should it be all of you?" they both stepped forwards, Benny was in front. I barked a warning and my fur bristled. This can't be happening. "Oh, strong and demanding. You could help us out a lot." He bent down and whispered something to the St. Bernard and then stood back up.

"Benny Boy... fetch!" Benny ran at me and Woobie ran in front of him to get his attention. Soon, he and Millenia were fighting Benny and that left me with the man.

"You could earn us a lot of money." I jumped as I realized the man was right in front of me now. I wasn't focused and I'm not ready to fight. He swung the net at me and I ducked. As I lunged at him he dodged and slammed his shoulder into mine, sending me to the ground. When I stood up I heard a yelp. I turned around to see Woobie pinned by his throat and Millenia was knocked out a few feet away. When I lunged their direction I was stopped suddenly as the man scooped me up in the net.

He carried me back to their vehicle, a white van, and put me in a large cage in the back. He whistled and Benny threw Woobie into the closest brick wall before jumping into the seat. I looked through the small crack to see Woobie trying to stand up, but he collapsed just as we drove off. Millenia stood up and shook her fur. She looked at the vehicle and right at me. I drooped my head as she rushed over to Woobie's side to help him up.

I put my friends in danger... they trusted me to do something and I got them hurt. I can't go back and see them again to apologize, I might not even get the chance to see them again and the last thing they will remember of me was how I got them injured and how I failed them.

I let sleep take over me as I felt nothing but guilt.
