The Line Was Dead
After 15 minutes of walking to the town diner, I jumped onto Link's back. He gave me a piggy-back ride all the way to the restaurant. I kept my chin on his shoulder. It was a feeling like no other. I was falling hard for this boy, and not just literally since I kept sliding off his back a little bit. I could tell he tried so hard to keep his hands off my butt, so he gripped my by my thighs. It tickled a little, so every time he'd scoot me up higher on his back, I'd giggle.
He put me down once all 3 of us had made it to the diner. It was a very cute place. It's very casual.
We walk in and a waitress leads us to a booth. I scoot in, and Rhett slides next to me. Link sits across from us.
"The entrees here are really big, so maybe we can split one?" Link asked me, with his gorgeous smile.
"Yeah, sure." I replied, biting my lip ever so softly. It's a habit I have. Either biting my lip or biting my nails.
Anyway, we ordered a chicken salad, while Rhett got chicken and waffles. The salad was very tasty, and Rhett let me have a waffle. The only thing that (barely) disturbed my dinner was Link's constant game of footsies with me. I would always smirk at him when we started the game.
We all got to know each other 500 times better than we did before. I nearly told them all my likes and dislikes.
No duh, I didn't tell them about my necklace and how I'm actually from 2014...but more of the stuff that I would tell a best friend.
Once we finished, we left $35.78 on the table and we left. Another 20 minute walk back to their neighborhood.
Link's hand brushed upon mine many, many times on the way back. Nearly all of them I could tell were "on purpose." He also stood very close to me, and talked to me in a very flirtatious manner.
Now, I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy it..because I totally did enjoy it.
"Friday night! Woohoo!" Yelled Rhett into the starry sky. It was a clear night, and the moon was very bright. Link and I smiled and 'woohooed' into the sky as well.
We walked Rhett home, waved and watched him close his front door. I was going to walk Link home. He kept on insisting it was the other way around, and that he should walk me home, but as of now, I have no home. Link doesn't know that, and he isn't going to ever know that.
What flew into my head during the silence of our walk was how I noticed a lot of things they do during dinner. Like how Rhett taps his fingers on the table randomly, and Link will fix his hair without knowing it. But I noticed another thing, too. Rhett always shot me this look when Link flirted with me. It wasn't a mean look, and it wasn't a sweet look. It was more of a warning look. I honestly couldn't tell.
When I was in thought, I never even realized that Link reached to hold my hand. I looked down at our hands and looked back up at his beautiful face. He played a smirk on his lips, but his cheeks were as red as tomatoes. He quickly let go as soon as I raised an eyebrow. He stepped a few inches away from me and kept his head down the entire time.
a w k w a r d.
We didn't talk for the rest of the walk. Once we reached his house, I grabbed his shoulder and turned him around.
"Everything okay, dude?" I asked him. He nodded and flashed me a reassuring smile, and like always, that brought a smile to my face. He still seemed very confused..or awkward.
I gave in and hugged him. He's a few inches taller than me. I'm 5'2 and he's probably 5'6. I wrapped my arms around his waist, and I felt his arms go around my shoulders.
"Today was probably the most fun i've had in a while," he finally said. I pulled away from the hug. I watched him turn and walk away, up the pathway to his front door. I stared at his house for a minute or two after he went inside. My major thought now was where am I going to stay? I don't have money or anything..I'm only 14 years old.
I walked back to the school where I woke up earlier this afternoon. Tomorrow is Saturday...there's gotta be a storage room I can sleep in. I came upon a shed, that seemed to be new. It was made out of wood. It wasn't locked or anything. I slowly creaked the door open, peeking my head in to get a good look. It must be the extra sports supply room. It was full of towels and water bottles, along with some medical/emergency supplies (blankets, band aids, sanitizer, deodorant, etc.) This is going to be my house for a little while.
Now that I know where I'm going to settle for the night, I had the urge to call Rhett. I had some important questions for him. It was only 9pm and I doubt he would be in bed. I reached in my pocket and pulled out a slip of paper. Both Rhett and Link gave me their home phone numbers. What was I going to call them on? I sat down on the floor, when I felt something thick in my pocket.
My phone? But its no longer a smart phone. It had transformed into a Nokia.
I dial Rhett's home phone number and wait for someone to pick up.
"Hello?" I heard a familiar voice say.
"Rhett, hey. It's Lily." I reply.
"Oh hey."
"So..why were you giving me a weird look today?"
"What do you mean?" He questioned.
"It seemed like every time I was talking to Link, you'd give me a weird version of the 'evil eye.' What was that about?"
"Look, Link. There's something you should know." He began. I listened closely. "You two can be good friends, but don't recommend flirting with Link, and don't get too attached to him. I don't want to see this go sour."
"Why can't I?" I scoffed into the phone. Why does he even care? He shouldn't! It's my life, and it's Link's life. Rhett can't make me do anything.
"It's just..Link has-" Rhett was cut off by something. It sounded like his mom. She seemed to be scolding him for something. She better not make him hang up!
"Rhett, Rhett, are you there?!" I held onto my phone with both hands. I had to know why I couldn't get attached to Link! "RHETT!" I yelled.
The line was dead
And the sound was worse than any awkwardness..
silence.
