Chapter 5

Freya's POV

I week has passed by since my arrival at the castle. After the second day here I found myself extremely bored and begged Moira to give me something to do.

She reluctantly agreed after a lot of persuasion and I was handed tasks to complete. I was so busy that I nearly forgot about the door I wanted to explore.

The rest of the week flew by and I had little chance to slip away seeing as I had a lot of tasks to complete. It was finally the end of the first week of my stay here and Moira decided to give me the day off, after all I was a guest.

I grabbed onto the opportunity with both hands and rushed to the door I saw. I luckily didn't get lost because I knew the castle a bit better.

When I arrived at the mysterious door I took a quick look around to see if any of the servants were nearby, but luck was on my side for the halls were empty.

I slowly turned the knob of the door and opened it quietly. When I stepped inside I closed it behind me. I was faced with another hallway that led to different doors. The only difference with this hallway was that it was darker and looked as if no one was here in years.

I walked over to the first room on the right and opened the door. To my great pleasure it opened to a spacious library filled to the brim with books. I didn't know why I sought out the library, but as soon as I saw all the leather covered spines of the books I knew I had a love for books.

An excited giggle escaped my lips as I strolled between the rows of books scanning over their names. Each book sounded intriguing and I wanted to read them all.

I was brushing my fingers over the leather bindings when a voice suddenly startled me from behind.

"What are you doing here?!" A loud voice boomed.

I spun on my heels after I let out a startled yelp to see where the source of the voice was coming from. Unfortunately the person was hidden within the shadows.
"I-I was just exploring." I replied.

"Well your not permitted to explore this part of the castle." The gruff voice responded.

"And why ever not?" I asked as I folded my arms infront of me.

"Because this is my castle and I will decide where people may be and may not be." The voice said in a low, menacing growl.

My response died in my throat as I realised I was talking to the king.

"You're king Ronin." I said out loud as I tried to comprehend the situation I found myself in.

"Yes, now I order you to leave. Immediately!" He said.

"It's nice to meet you, I'm-"

"I know who you are! Now can you leave?!"

"Sire please may I have a word?" I asked.

"About what?" He asked impatiently.

"I just wanted to thank for saving my life." I said as I looked up at the shadows where the king was hidden.

"Very well you thanked me, now will you please leave. I want to be alone." He said annoyed.

"But sire-"

"I said leave! Leave now before I regret saving your life in the first place!" He said with a loud growling voice that sent a shiver down my spine and made my neck hairs rise.

I nodded quietly before I rushed towards the door and left the king alone. I exited the library and rushed to the door I came through.

When I exited the door back into the hall Moira was waiting for me. She looked pale and worried.

"Are you alright? I heard screaming and came as fast as I could." She asked as she looked me over.

"Yes I'm fine. I just met the king."I said.

"Oh." Was all she said.

"I now know why you didn't want me to go to him." I said.

"Yes, but you must know he wasn't always like that. He was much friendlier before." She said.

"What happened?"

"Freya it is better if he tells you, after all it is his story." She said and I reluctantly nodded.

I knew it was his story, but if didn't even give me the opportunity to introduce myself then how will I ever be able to hear his story. Why was he so awfully rude and mean?

Rhid's POV

It has been a week since Freya's disappearance and with each passing day I grew less and less hopeful that we were going to find her.

Her chances seemed to get slimmer by the minute. We tracked her to a place, but then her tracks were gone and we had no way of knowing in which direction she went.

I was currently in the king's study looking over maps to see if I can determine where she went. I was still inspecting the maps when I saw a carriage enter the courtyard and I knew immediately who it was. It was Javier.

After Freya's disappearance Javier was immediately notified and the quest was cancelled so that more people could look for Freya.

A few minutes later I heard the study doors fling open and when I turned around I saw a very angry looking Javier step inside.

"Javier I'm glad-" My words were suddenly cut off by Javier who grabbed me by my collar.

"How could you let this happen, Rhid! I trusted you with her! How could you loose her like that!" He screamed at me.

"Javier-"

"Don't you dare try to explain yourself out of this one. I trusted you with my sister's well-being and what do you do? You get her kidnapped the first week I'm gone!" Javier said through clenched teeth.

"Javier she's not kidnapped, she ran away."

"And how do you know for sure they didn't get her? Huh?"

I only looked down to the ground.

"That's right you don't know. And she's all gone because of you!" He roared as he pushed me back and I fell back against the desk.

Javier turned around and started to pace the room as he mumbled to himself that he never should have left Freya.

"Javier, I'm sorry. It's all my fault." I said as my shoulders sagged with shame.

Javier stopped his pacing and came over to place his hands on my shoulders. He let out a low sigh before he spoke.

"I'm sorry Rhid. I was just mad. It's not your fault. It could've happened to anyone and I'm sorry I took it out on you. The person who is behind this is to blame. Not you, not me. Just them." He said as I nodded my head.

"Now please tell me everything you know." He said as he turned around and viewed the map behind me. I showed him where we found her footsteps and where we looked.

After a while we joined the search party in hopes of finding something that could help us find Freya.

Freya's POV

After my encounter with the king, Moira took me back to the kitchen to help the cook. She didn't say it, but I guess she wanted to help me get my mind off the king.

I must admit that even though I didn't see him I was scared by him. He scared me, but at the same time I found myself drawn to him. There was something about him that enticed me.

Even though he was rude and mysterious I wanted to get to know him better. I wanted to see what he looked like.

"Come on Freya dear, those pots aren't going to clean themselves." The cook's voice broke me from my thoughts and I realised that I had stopped scrubbing the pots I was told to clean. I quickly shook my head trying to clear my head from all the stray thoughts.

"Ah young lasses always with their heads in the clouds." I heard cook mumble and when I turned around to ask her what she meant I saw she wasn't even in the room, but rather in the storage room at the back of the kitchen. And believe me it was a big kitchen.

A frown spread across my face as I wondered how it was even possible for me to hear what she said. Did I have hearing powers or something? I wondered.

I shrugged my shoulders, who cared if I had super hearing capabilities, they might come in handy sometime. When I realised that this might be one of my powers I wondered what other powers I had.

What if I had mind reading powers? And that is how it came to be that I started to focus my attention on reading people's minds.

It was quite difficult at first, but after a while trying I finally heard someone's thoughts, even though it was very soft I still heard it.

After we cleaned the kitchen for the night I let out a big yawn. I quickly said my good nights before I headed to my room.

As I laid in my bed I replayed the day's events in my heads. The particular event I was focusing on was when I met the king.

I wondered about him and how he looked. I found it very strange that he kept to the shadows in the library and I didn't even catch a glimpse of what he looked like.

His rudeness only brought my thoughts back to the curse and I wondered why they were cursed in the first place. I mean all the castle staff was so friendly, who would possibly want to curse them?

I was about to blow out the candle on the table when I accidentally knocked of the letter. I quickly picked it up before my eyes scanned through it once more.

I still had no memories returning to me. And I still didn't have a clue as to who this mysterious Javier could be. Was he maybe my husband? I wondered but I guess I would've worn a ring. Maybe we were courting.

I threw the letter on the table before I let out a frustrated sigh. I couldn't believe I lost my memories. I can't even remember how it happened.

I was starting to loose my mind not knowing who I was or where I came from. But I quickly reminded myself that I had to stay strong and that I should be positive that my memories would return.

Ronin's POV

The night after my chance encounter with the strange faerie I couldn't sleep. I tossed and I turned and all I could think of was her.

I had so many questions, but I knew she had no answers. I wanted to know why her powers was so intriguing, but if she didn't even remember her own name, why would she remember her powers?

I did feel bad about the way I treated her in the library, but I was very protective of my library. Especially after my parents' death.

The library was our special place and I didn't want anyone to spoil it. Especially not a strange faerie.

I remember the day I rescued her. If it wasn't for the strong pull her powers had on me I might've never known she was even there. The moment she crossed the border into my lands I felt her present and it was extremely strange.

I've never experienced such a pull from other powers in my life before. It was very common for skin changers to feel the presence of powers and we could immediately tell how strong someone's powers were.

That is why I found the faery so interesting, she had a stronger pull then most ordinary fae.

I wanted to know everything about her but I guess I had to wait for her memories to return, and I for one was not a very patient man.
