XIV : Lieutenant General König

8th May 2010

Lieutenant General Irmina König.

That was what the World will be calling her.

Generalleutnant König.

That was what her Army Forces Command was calling her.

It was surreal.

And her service uniform was something different. That is something for sure.

Her shoulder strap had red and yellow sewn, lacing it and grey being its main base colour. Three golden buttons and two leaves at the end of it. Basic white neatly ironed and buttoned-up shirt with a black tie under her light grey service jacket. The collar of the jacket had deep red gorget patches with gold decorative stitching. Dark grey, close to black, trousers and black shoes, way too shiny to her liking. Inner piping of gold braid, medals and a deep red beret with a gold device on it, to show she was 'Special Operations Forces' to top it off.

That's the only way they can put her in. She was in a special unit.

And her office was fancy. Fancier than Maria's. She was impressed and all she had to do was to fill it with her personal stuff. Her nameplate was a shiny black base and gold lettering and lining.

'GenLt. Irmina A. König.'

A knock on her office door and she answered, a woman in a similar uniform entered, except with lesser medals, the shoulder straps saying she was ranked Captain, silver piping and an ash-grey beret. Her collar had branch colour patches. The Army still uses the Waffenfarben colour scheme to indicate tropp types.

And the Captain here is with the Army Aviation Corps.

"Morgen Generalleutnant König. Captain Marlene Ackerman at your service." She saluted in perfect posture as she should.

Irmina saluted back with a smile and waved for her to be at ease. "Right. Your file is impressive and I hoped this job is fine with you. They insisted that I have an assistant."

"I am perfectly fine with the job Generalleutnant König. It was better than any other jobs they had offered months ago or I would have left the service." Irmina laughed in response, fixing her beret that wasn't to her liking and her neatly braided hair.

"I looked better with the cap. Does this look right?" Irmina whined as she checked her beret through the mirror.

"Ja Generalleutant."

"That must be a mouthful to say," Irmina scoffed softly before looking at her shiny shoes, frowning and disappointed.

"Something wrong?"

"Do we have matte shoes? This doesn't match in any sense and I like the matte shoes way more." Marlene smiled at how adorable her boss was and headed to where the pair of shoes she wanted was. Irmina accepted grateful, sitting on a sofa and changing out her shoes.

"You are a badass, your chopper shot down. You saved your buddies and were stuck in a firefight. Gravely injured, and lost a leg in the process. That is impressive. The reason why I chose you." Irmina voiced, busied with her shoes and eyed her from head to toe. Irmina nodded and stood up with Marlene thanking her for the compliment and job. "Tell me when you need anything and I'll try my best to fulfil it. Also making it fun for both of us. And these come with me everywhere so you hold onto one."

Irmina handed her one of her katana as she held the other. Marlene nodded in response and checked the design of the saya (the thingy that holds the blade). Irmina then showed her how to hold the blade properly not to make it blunt.

"Generalleutnant König!" The President praised entering the room and received salutes from both soldiers. "Time to show you off to the country."

Irmina has a soft smile as the President, leaves the office and Marlene follows closely behind and blade in hand. Irmina was glad that the President didn't oppose her having her katanas with her. She did however leave one behind and Marlene was holding one closely.

Outside of her office was her staff, lined along the hallway and saluting at their new Lieutenant General.

She was surprised.

This was the better outcome—a way better one.

She saluted back with a soft smile on her face. As they went down the hall, Irmina was grateful and shook everyone's hands. Some were shy to offer their hand and some were eager to meet their new commander. Irmina being the outgoing person she is, made sure that she didn't forget to shake anyone's hand and offer her hand first when needed.

Along the lines of welcoming the new Lieutenant General and telling her that it would be a pleasure to be working with her, the women were over the moon. It was almost impossible for a woman to take a position as high as Colonel and here is Irmina being 'promoted' for the second time.

Because there was only one woman that became a General of the armed forces and that was Verena Merethe von Weymarn.

And now, thanks to the President. The patriarchy was forgotten in Germany's dire need.

Germany has been going in the right direction ever since their part in the two World Wars. Sure some survivors had not forgiven or forgotten about the destruction and pain the Third Reich put the world into.

But most have moved on.

There was no point in holding on to the past. What was done is done, nothing else anyone can do but move on.

But it will always linger. Even if it was forgotten.

"Generalleutnant König, these people will be the Commanders of our military with you."

Irmina raised her eyebrows as she held her smirk. These Commanders are old. All out of retirement before they could find a replacement. But they are a few that have just been promoted a couple of days back.

She saluted her General, also the Chief of Defence, as they practically glared at her, loathing because one, they're still in the past and second, she's young. Well looks young.

She's 87. Mentally, sort of.

Physically, about 25 to 30. Depends on the person's views.

"I hope it will be a pleasure working with you," Irmina voiced, filling the silence as President exhaled in relief, thanking her with a nod. He left with the General of the Army, her boss directly above her, who doesn't seem to be happy with the situation and the new Chief of Defence, who appeared to in crossed paths about the situation.

"We will see."

"Hostile already and I haven't even started my work." Irmina scoffed, walking away from the egotistic Commanders.

And they started shouting.

Irmina grinned and also wondered how this whole thing was going to work. Captain Ackerman looked at her puzzled, why would she start a bad relationship with them?

"Relax, we only crossed paths once in a while. So that can be settled another time. God, this is going to be so much fun but annoying too." Irmina laughed, handing a plate to Marie, who couldn't care less about the shouting directed at her that was quickly shut down after her bosses stepped in.

"Why would you do that for?"

"Please, this is politics and political views are still heavily in the past. These guys still believe that no woman should be at the command of the army. Even though it had happened before."

"But—"

"Trust me, I met them before but of course, they don't know who I was that time." Irmina shrugged before placing a crab cake in her mouth and she rolled her eyes. One of the best crab cakes she ever had. The shoutings died down as an Admiral stood by her side.

"SS-Oberst-Gruppenführer." His voice was so soft but gut-wrenching to hear. He was tall, and blonde and had the brown eyes she admired so long before.

He was not the same man, however.

He was his son.

"Vize-Admiral Richter. No wonder you looked familiar." Irmina sighed, looking at the Vize-Admiral. He extended out his arm and she took it, shaking it with a smile on her face.

"Thank you for saving my father."

"Of course. He was an honourable man. Also a great friend. He's doing better?"

She knew he passed.

"He passed—"

"You were a Nazi?"

"Yes but—"

"Mr President! You want a war criminal to be at the head of your army command?" Irmina rolled her eyes and went back to her food. The Commanders went on bickering with the President, Generals, Admiral and Chief of Defence. Vize-Admiral Richter stayed with Irmina and Maria as they had a new conversation.

Mostly about Irmina.

And another Lieutenant General joined one that would be under her as the Deputy Inspector of the Army Command. He nodded as an acknowledgement and helped himself with the plethora of food.

"Generalleutnant General Otto, I hope that we can lead with no trouble."

"I hope the same, Generalleutnant König. It is an absolute honour to be working with you." Irmina chuckled in response and shook his hand which was shaking in excitement. And their wholesome moment was ruined when a hand gripped tightly on his shoulder.  Irmina froze for a quick second before slowly turning to whoever was so offended by her presence.

"Get your hand off me," Irmina gritted through her teeth and Marlene swore that for a quick second, Irmina's eyes turned completely black. The Department Head of the Army staff, one of the very few survivors. "You have been too comfortable on the job, Generalmajor Wolf-Joachim Clauß (Clauss)."

He took a step back, seeing the disgust in her eyes. The Major General was terrified just by her glare. Irmina was thinking of her next move when her General stood before her. She stood up straight and greeted him with a nod, she was not the only one to do so.

"Rührt euch," he nodded as Irmina relaxes with the soldiers. General Volker Wieker raised his hand out for Irmina who accepted with a smile and eyes so kind but still filled with pain and hasn't found a purpose. He had seen those eyes too often with his soldiers. [At ease]

"Generalleutnant König was never a war criminal. Arguments and testimonies were made for her for decades and we have proof for you." President Köhler voiced, patting Irmina's back which made her way too uncomfortable and shivered slightly. The President apologised under his breath and he received a cute scrunched-up face and smirk from his favourite Lieutenant General.

"What he said is true, I read through a lot of it for a couple of days." It was the Chief of Defence's turn to vouch for her. Irmina did try to make up for her killings and tried to give the families some peace, every time she had a chance to. Some went well and some maybe not. Irmina sighed in response before going back to her food. Captain Ackerman glanced at her before laughing softly to herself.

Irmina was given some space as the President and Chief defended her before the Chancellor walked in with two soldiers who greeted the entire Military Command with salutes and formalities they were taught. Irmina was the only one that returned the greeting. Sadly and disappointing.

"It is time for us to introduce our new Military Command."

¬_¬

Maria looked at the screen of the Command Room before grinning to herself, seeing Irmina lined up with the Command but trying not to pull so much attention to herself as the others are doing. But failing miserably because there is nothing stranger than being the only woman and youngest in the Command.

Then her uniform is fancier and somehow looks more comfortable than the ones that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have which were designed for agility and comfort for the agents. The so-so many coloured medals on her jacket, the colour of her gold braided piping, the shoulder strap with her rank and the deep-red beret with the device on it. That is another thing that was brought to her attention.

"She really is doing the job."

Maria slowly turned to Natasha who had been standing behind her for a quick minute. Maria laughed, checking her tablet and her attention back to the screen when Irmina's name was announced.

The cheers for her were overwhelming for anyone. Louder than the ones the others received.

They could clearly see Irmina holding back her smirk as she saluted the country with her stoic posture and face. She was cocky but grateful that the people are accepting her as one of their Commanders.

"God, she's a higher rank than I am." Maria sighed, sort of disappointed in herself but also slightly jealous of Irmina but she was as well impressed with how far Irmina had pushed herself after years of torture.

Lieutenant General of the Bundeswehr, a three-star General. That granted her a lot of authority and power that she knew how to use for her country and herself but she will never use it for her own gain. She will sacrifice herself again if the time comes.

"How much is she getting paid?" Natasha asked, generally curious since the last time she heard about Irmina's pay was when the Federal President was willing to pay her as high as she wanted.

"12 grand a month." Natasha slowly turned her head, impressed. Irmina gets paid more than she does or maybe Maria. Yes, Irmina gets paid more by a small percentage. A very small one. "She did say she doesn't need to be paid more but the President insisted. She's already a multi-millionaire thanks to her family's wealth."

"Now I know who to go to for money."

"What is it with you being so cold to her? Is it-"

"No!" Natasha coughed and smacked Maria's shoulder. "She's just annoying."

"Yeah right. Ignoring all the flirting and the small touches and the caring so much about one another—"

"What is it with you and her?"

"I want to sleep with her so bad." Maria shamelessly admitted before going back to the screen, still broadcasting the announcement of Germany's new command. The Intelligence Agency somehow had Germany's broadcast on their cable. Well, maybe because they are the Intelligence Agency. "Almost did."

"W-why?"

"For one, she is hot. Two, her hands looked so, how do I say this? I can't stop looking at her hands. And lastly, the teacher back in Japan, Ms. Sato, she needed another night with Irmina before we left. So I want to experience the pleasure she offers too."

Natasha was speechless as Maria walked with a smirk since Fury had called for her. One of the other Agents nodded after she heard Maria. Irmina went around the Headquarters whenever she needed a release.

And her attention was back on the screen when she heard an explosion.

¬_¬

"Why don't I not get in an explosion for once? Marlene!" Irmina shouted, propping herself over the President. He tapped her arm and nodded for her to do whatever she wanted. She crawled over Marlene who seemed to be in a panic trance. "Hauptmann Ackerman! Ackerman!"

Marlene let out a shaky breath as her eyes shifted everywhere, trying to focus on something. Irmina shook her, shouting her name and gripped her Katana.

"Vize-Admiral Richter, take care of her for me!" Irmina shouted, dragging the President towards them. She unsheathed her blade and cut a bullet in half. She started to shout at the Commanders to get to safety and order soldiers. "Two at each commander at all times. Four with the Chancellor and President!"

"Ja Generalleutnant König!" Irmina threw her blade at one of the attackers while her soldiers hurried to do as they are ordered. She wanted more troops for protection but there were civilians that needed to be taken care of.

"König!" The Chief of Defence shouted for her, making her stop in her tracks.

"Sir, I would very much like to talk to you. But please get to safety," Irmina said as she was handed her blade by one of the training officers. Irmina winched at the gunshots, bringing back her trauma.

"Don't die, I very much like you for this job. That is an order."

"Of course General, I hate to go against an order." Irmina grinned, picking up a gun that was handed to her by a Lieutenant and watched the General running off with two soldiers behind him. "Why must you attack my glorious day?"

Irmina stood as shook her katana out, letting the blood slide off it faster and checking the stability of it. Soldiers gathered around as if it was a protection wall from the attackers. She was selfless to the point where she stayed back to fight while some upper-ups ran to hide, dishing out orders from their safe haven.

"Generalleutnant König, you need to get to safety."

"Yeah right, maybe another version of me would." Irmina scoffed, pulling a soldier down as they hid behind the stage. Irmina spent a good three minutes just arguing with her subordinates about getting her to safety as gunshots and explosions around the Headquarters. But they failed and one forced a bulletproof vest on her.

"If you want to stay, Generalleutnant. Wear the vest for us." Irmina clenched her jaws as she took a deep breath, adjusting the vest. She was uncomfortable, believe it or not, this was the first time she wore one.

"You have never worn one?"

"Nien, Major Adel. Too uncomfortable." Irmina groaned, pushing one of the soldiers against the stage and shooting an enemy before fixing her beret like nothing had happened. "Let's get out base back, shall we? Trust me."

"Ja Generalleutnant König!"

Irmina charged head-in first while her soldiers were bewildered, not just how she just ran in but how fast and deadly she was. Because in a span of ten seconds, she put down three men who were fully geared and ready to take her down.

¬_¬

Natasha panicked as she watched the screen with the other agents. The women were worried because they knew King's real face, they had the pleasure to. The men were something terrified for the future of Germany as they watched the second attack of the German military command. The country didn't have a week's break from the chaos residing on their land.

Maria watched on Fury's computer screen as the explosion interrupted their meeting.

"Motherfucker," Fury whispered as he switched to the bigger screen in his office. Maria scanned the screen for Irmine only to find her dragging the President.

Maria and Natasha smirked as Irmina threw her blade through what she thought was one but two. Seeing that the Lieutenant General's attention was on her boss.

"Go get them, King."

"Go get them, König."

¬_¬

Irmina ran through the courtyard, either using her Katana or shooting as her only action. She got behind an armoured car, threading her finger around her collar and the bullet-proof vest. She really wanted to pull it off.

"Generalleutnant König, please do not take that off." Ackerman panted as she gripped Irmina's hand. Irmina chuckled in response as she looked at Marlene. "Sorry about having a panic attack earlier. I think this is better than an unloaded gun."

Ackerman pulled Irmina's katana that was in between her bulletproof vest and her back.

"Yes, it is, Captain Ackerman." Irmina smiled, putting it beside the other, tying the sageo, a cord, to her belt and securing both blades tightly to her belt. "Are you sure you can do this?"

"Changed the leg and armoured up with a gun in my hand. So yes I am sure."

"I like the sass, I want that every day. Got it, Marlene?"

"Ja Generalleutnant König."

"Throw this at three o'clock please." Marlene nodded as she took an explosive from Irmina's hand that Irmina searched around Marlene's vest. She threw it quickly while Irmina took out her katana from the scabbard. Irmina shuts her eyes and listened to the surroundings while Marlene carefully placed a comm in her hand. "Cover me, sweetheart."

¬_¬

Irmina groaned as she sat down on the stage, legs hung over the edge and placed her dirtied katanas beside her. She removed the vest, and couldn't care less if someone were to take a shot at her. There were no losses but a lot are gravely injured but will make it through. She looked around the destruction on the headquarters and was glad that it wasn't too bad just a few weeks of rebuilding it will be fine. She placed the vest on her lap and then her katanas on it to clean it. Irmina untied the sheaths from her belt and Marlene took it from her, sitting down by her right.

"Thank you for dragging me to the Vize-admiral so I don't die," Marlene said, rolling up on the side of her pants and removing her prosthetic, letting out a soft moan and relieved from the pain. She didn't expect to be stuck in combat.

"You are my soldier. I take care of my people. I understand whatever you experienced earlier, it happens to me way too often." Irmina said, wiping off the blood and grime of her blades with the handkerchief in her jacket. Marlene looked at her, perplexed by her statement.

Irmina rarely open up to just anyone since she knew that the only betrayals one experiences come from those who one has trusted and been vulnerable with. She has a better probability of performing the necessary actions if and when they are required the less they know about her. But as she began to enjoy this freedom, her defences started to come down as she started to trust and associate with certain people who weren't Busidas.

Now, she has Maria, Micheal, Natasha and Nikolai. Maybe Clint and Marlene.

"That was hard for you to say, huh?"

Irmina laughed as she took back her saya and put her katanas back in. She nodded, tossing the vest to the side and checked herself for any torn part of her uniform, seeing if she was injured and didn't notice due to her adrenaline.

"I have a son. So I am very grateful that you saved me."

"You are not just any soldier. You are the one that will be with me a lot and I chose you so—"

"I know, I know. Can you just enjoy my gratitude?"

"Ja, ich kann, Hauptmann Ackerman." Irmina sighed, standing and reached out for Marlene. The two headed inside before leaving back to their barracks in Kolbenze. Marlene hopped for a bit before Irmina picked her up bridal style with ease that made the Captain shriek, surprised as her face became as red as a tomato. Irmina laughed in response, heading to the conference room. [Yes, I can, Captain Ackerman.]
