When Lila woke up in the morning, she was happy to find that Wooyoung's arms were still wrapped around her. She sighed and rubbed her nose into his chest.
He hadn't rejected her. That had always been one of her biggest fears once they started dating... She knew it was a lot to handle and was honestly surprised that San had stayed by her side for this long.
Wooyoung shifted, letting out a soft moan while loosening his grip on her.
Lila shifted so she could sit up and look at him. He looked so peaceful while he slept. Slowly, she reached up to trace his jaw, cheeks, and nose. He didn't even stir.
Biting her lip, Lila carefully slipped out of bed and pulled the covers back over him before placing a soft kiss on his cheek.
Then she crept into her living room and saw both San and Yeosang sleeping on the couch. Whether it was on purpose, or happened while they were sleeping she didn't know, but Lila just about lost it when she saw San's head in Yeosang's lap.
She had to place a hand over her mouth to muffle the squeal that threatened to break lose as she went to her bathroom, desperately wanting a shower. She grabbed a couple of towels, a change of clothes, and locked herself in the bathroom.
The warm water felt good as it ran over her skin, washing away the pain and sadness from the previous two days.
She knew San was right, she should be taking the medication... But the thought of the fog it put her in scared her. She wasn't the real Lila when she was on it. Sure it caused her to spiral out of control sometimes, but weren't the high points worth the low points?
If she had been on it, she might not have gotten the courage to talk to Wooyoung, or help him the day they had run into each other. Then he wouldn't be here right now, sleeping peacefully in her bed.
Lila felt a blush creep into her cheeks and she shook her head quickly. Now was not the time to start fantasizing. There was a lot that still needed to be discussed.
When she finished her shower, she dried herself of quickly and dressed in the jeans and sweatshirt she had grabbed. Then she wrapped her wet hair in one of the towels to let it dry a little more before going back to her living room.
She was surprised to see all three boys in her kitchen pulling out food and talking to each other as they prepared breakfast. The wonderful smell of bacon filled her house, accompanied by the amazing symphony of crackling and hissing.
"Now who said you could get into my bacon?" She asked, laughing when all three of them jumped as she took the towel from her hair and tossed it aside.
"You're awake!" San said, starting to move over to her.
But Wooyoung was faster.
Lila's heart leapt out of her chest when she felt his arms wrap around her and pull her to his chest. "Are you ok?"
She brought her arms up to hug him back and buried her face in his neck. "Yeah, I'm ok. Thank you for not... Freaking out. Although I wouldn't have blamed you if you did." She whispered.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked, pulling back but keeping his arms around her.
"I was scared. I still am if I'm being honest." Lila glanced at San. He gave her a tight, knowing smile and nodded.
At that, Lila took a deep, shuddering breath and pulled back the sleeves of her sweatshirt.
She saw the hurt that flashed across Wooyoung face as he stared down at her wrists and forearms. Several crisscrossed scars marred her skin, and there was one on each arm that ran from the base of her arm almost up to her elbow.
Wooyoung took her right arm and traced the scars lightly with his finger. "Why?"
Even though his tone wasn't harsh or demanding, Lila still flinched and felt the need to pull her arm away. But she didn't, not when she focused on how good his fingers felt against her skin. She didn't want to tell him, it just made everything worse.
Lila's chest started to tighten again as she thought back to the reason behind all this and she closed her eyes.
Another hand was placed on her shoulder and she looked up into San's gentle eyes. "Do you want me to tell them?"
She nodded and swallowed hard. San led her to the couch so she could sit down. "Not everything." Lila whispered, just loud enough for him to hear. She saw the slightest of nods and squeezed his hand.
Once she was curled up in the corner with San sitting next to her, still holding her hand, he looked at the other two.
"Lila... For as long as I've known her... She was abused by her mom."
Both Wooyoung and Yeosang gasped, the older covering his mouth with his hand. "What?"
Lila buried her face in her knees, trying to keep herself calm.
"She seemed like the nicest person to strangers, and she was always kind to me whenever I came over. The kitchen was always stocked with snacks and drinks, perfect for after school study sessions. I never suspected anything, until one day when I was walking over I heard her yelling."
"That was the first time she hit me." Lila whispered as she started to shake. "I had showed her the paper I had spent hours on and was really proud of, but it was only graded a 'C', so she was disappointed in the results. I was twelve. She had yelled at me before, for poor grades and such, but she had never hit me."
"And she never raised a hand to me either." San said, wrapping his arm around Lila. "She even let me stay the night over there, no questions asked, after I came out to my parents. I don't think she was a bad person..."
"She's just a bad mom." Lila added, staring blankly at her knees. "She told me she wishes I had never been born."
San flinched at those words while the other two sat motionless.
"She never wanted to be a mom in the first place. But she was forced to raise me by herself after my dad left when I was eleven. I think that's why she wasn't afraid to hit me. He used to stop her and calm her down." Lila felt the tears coming to her eyes when thinking about him.
"Where did he go?" Yeosang asked. He was obvious that he was trying to be delicate with her.
"I don't know." Lila said, biting her lip and looking down. She didn't want to get into that right now.
"Anyway..." San said, giving her a slight squeeze and quickly changing the subject, "I had noticed a change one day with Lila while we were in high school. I had only caught her mom yelling at her a couple of times, and there were a few occasions where Lila failed to hide a bruise. I tried to talk to her about it, but she would always push me away."
Now she was starting to shake as they got closer to the point she was worried about the most. She still hadn't been able to look at Wooyoung, even though she could feel her eyes on him.
San took a deep breath. "Then in our senior year, Li-"
A loud knock on the door interrupted San and Lila let out a little yelp. The four of them turned to look at it, then San got up and crept over to it.
He turned around with a scrunched nose and rushed over to drag Wooyoung and Yeosang off the couch. "It's Lila's coworker. And he's not going to go away, trust me." He hissed.
"Nate is here?" Lila asked, rubbing the tears from her eyes.
As if to answer her question, he knocked on the door again. "Lila? Are you here?"
Why did he have to come again today? It was sweet that he cared, but it was really poor timing.
Lila watched as San pulled the other two into her bedroom and came out, shutting the door behind him. He motioned for her to stay on the couch while he walked to the front door and opened it slowly.
"San?" Nate asked.
"Hello Nathaniel."
"Why are you here again?"
Lila was pretty sure San's silence meant he just raised his eyebrows as he crossed his arms. But then he said, "Why are you here again?"
Nathaniel let out a nervous laugh. "Touché. How is she?"
"I'm fine, Nate." Lila called from the couch.
The taller poked his head around San's shoulder and a bright smile crossed his face. "Hey you! I'm glad to see you up and about." He pushed past San and walked over to her.
"You really didn't need to come by today. I'm taking the weekend off like you asked."
"I know, but I wanted to check in. It's what friends do, right?" He sat next to her on the couch and placed a hand on her knee. "Have you been eating?"
Lila flashed him a quick smile. "Yes. San has been taking good care of me." She turned to look at her friend as he walked around the couch to sit down.
Nate turned to look at him too. "I can stay for a bit if you want to go. I don't have any plans for this evening. I thought maybe we could order some pizza and watch some movies?" He asked, turning back to Lila.
"That's really sweet of you, Nate, but I was honestly thinking about going back to bed soon. I can't afford to miss more than a couple days of work so I was going to sleep all weekend." And now that she said it, Lila suddenly did feel tired. She knew it would come at some point. It always did.
"Well let's get you into bed then!" He said brightly, standing up to pull her off the couch.
"No!" San and Lila said at the same time.
Nate dropped Lila's hand and turned to face San, his eyes narrowing a little. "Why not?"
"I-" Lila started.
"Well-" San bit his lip and glanced at her.
"I h-had just told San I wanted some lunch first."
"I was going to run and get it." San added quickly. "That way she could take a nap and enjoy some quiet while I was gone."
Nate looked between the two of them. His eyes showed that he didn't fully believe them, but he just shrugged. "Why don't I go get something and I can bring it back?"
"That's ok, you should just go home and enjoy your weekend."
Something flashed across Nate's eyes as he focused on Lila. "So San can go get you food and I can't?"
"It's not that. I'm just exhausted and he was already here."
"Did he stay the night?"
"What does it matter?" Lila asked tilting her head a little. She watched as Nate clenched his fists and closed his eyes. Then he pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.
"Ok. Fine. I'll leave. I'm glad to see you are feeling better, and I'll see you on Monday." He said, leaning forward and kissing the top of her head before leaving.
Lila sighed in relief and sank back into her couch.
Her bedroom door opened and Yeosang's head poked out. "All clear?"
"Yeah, we're good." Lila closed her eyes and rested her head on the back of the couch. She honestly was starting to feel tired.
A gentle touch caressed her cheek and she opened her eyes to see Wooyoung kneeling in front of her. "Are you doing ok?"
Lila hummed and leaned into his hand. "Yes." She sighed.
"You look tired. Let's get you back into bed. I should probably get back before my manager realized I snuck out." He said, picking her up off the couch easily. Lila leaned into his chest and closed her eyes.
"I hope you don't get in trouble because of me." She mumbled, as the swaying of his walking started to sooth her.
"It'll be worth it. I'm just glad that you're ok. We will talk more about this later, but for now you should get some rest."
Lila could feel herself slipping away. That was the hard thing with her spells. They always left her feeling exhausted and she usually spent the next couple of days sleeping.
"Don't worry, I'll stay with her." She heard San say as Wooyoung tucked her into bed.
"Thank you. I feel so much better knowing that you'll be here instead of whoever that guy was."
Lila tried to open her eyes. "Don't bash Nate... He's a sweet guy..." She mumbled.
She felt lips press against her forehead, and thought she heard San grumble something about Nate, before sleep claimed her once more.
