Chapter 18: Ashlyn

•2411 words•

"Hey, Myliey!" I shout.

I want to go and give her a hug but I don't know if I should. I know it wasn't her fault that she was made to shoot Kyron, but at the end of the day, she still did almost kill my boyfriend.

"Hey, Ash!" She screams back. Everyone goes running over to her to hug her, Jamie shouting, "Oh my god, I'm so sorry that happened to you Myliey! Loffy is a horrible man and I hope he goes to jail!" I agree with Jamie but don't say anything. He should go to jail. Especially if he's done this before! Also, he was supposedly involved in the KK crime, and I think that we're already half-way through solving that.
"Hey, Ash! Come on, group hug!" Brooke shouts me over. She really wants me to join in with the hug, but I can't. Kyron's not here. Yeah, he's coming out of hospital in just 3 days now (if his condition doesn't get worse) so I'll be able to hug him soon. But still, I don't like group hugs without him. I really want to hug him right now. I wish he was here. I miss him.

"Guys," Here Jamie goes with one of his long speeches, I bet, "Crofley's rang me before. We're going to Rufus' office in a few hours. He wants to tell us something about the KK crime. Someone else has been arrested!"
What? Oh, my god. I wonder who's been arrested! I really want to go to Rufus immediately but we're only going in a little while. I run to my bedroom to get changed. I'm so excited!

A few hours pass by, and now we're literally steps away from entering Rufus' office again. As I said before, I'm so excited! We're inches away from solving this crime completely. I walk in and take a deep breath. We've nearly solved this thing! I'm holding Brooke's hand. She looks at me and I turn my head to look back at her. We grin at one another and slowly let go of each other as we sit down. We then both look at Rufus and smile as he says, "Well then everybody, the crime is almost solved! Thank you for your efforts so far; the police have been very impressed with you. I wanted to tell you some very important news. Loffy has been arrested. They changed the court dates and he was arrested last night. He's been given the rest of his life in prison for child harassment, murder, assault, and multiple robberies! Someone else has been arrested too. Well done, Jamie! 'John' goes by the name of Adam Macken. He was found to have killed around 50 people in the SPV that night and has since been arrested. His friend who was in a gang with him was also found guilty. His name goes by Mark Co-Corvense? No, sorry- Corvanze. Mark Corvanze. He lives quite locally, actually. He was found to have killed-"

What?
"What?" Jamie screams.
"That's my dad! Does he live at number 18 Russo Drive?"
"Um- um, I-I don't know his address," Rufus replies, "But I'll try and find it out for you."
"Describe him," Jamie commands, sternly.
"Um, according to the documents, he has dark brown hair, an earring in one ear and has a long beard. Other information: duh duh duh is, um, smokes a lot and is a father of 2. Oh and here we are, address: 18 Russo Drive, Bridgewood."
"Tha-That's my dad!" Jamie screams, startled. "My dad's killed people! Oh my God, oh my God!"

What. In. The. World?
Hang on- my foster dad has killed people. Plenty of people. Maybe like, 50 people. Jamie's dad-

Jamie and I look at each other in doubt. We cannot believe what we've just heard. Jamie doesn't even know how to react- he doesn't really like his dad anyway, but yet his own father is in prison. Chances are, he's never coming out of it either. Wow. This is incredible. Unbelievable. Literally unbelievable. We can't believe this. Jamie stands up and leaves the room, Brooke hugging him as he leaves; Rufus mouthing 'I'm sorry.' My jaw is practically hanging low enough to touch my chest, and my palms are starting to feel like I've just dipped them in a pool of water; drenching in sweat. I was only with that family for a couple of months and I never liked any of them anyway, but I feel so uneasy. See! What did I say? Ashlyn, I told you there was something that just wasn't right about that family! I knew it! I'm not so stupid after all.

Standing up from my seat and excusing myself to leave the room for a moment, I decide to go and check on Jamie. I'm as shellshocked as he is by this, but Mark Corvanze isn't my real dad, whereas he is Jamie's. "Hey, Jamie," I politely say as I walk through the hall of Rufus' office block. The new Head Detective is stood between Jamie and I, blocking my path to get to my ex foster brother. I don't even think Jamie heard me when I shouted his name. "Jamie!" I shout again. He looks at me and then carries on walking around the office block. How rude. "Jamie, please. Just come here a minute. I want to speak to you!" Eventually, I manage to make him listen to me. "Uh, fine," I hear him whisper under his breath as he walks towards me, wiping his tears.

"What do you want?" He asks aggressively.
"Look, I just wanted to say that we can figure this out."
"Figure what out? Everything's fine...I guess, " he tells me, looking down at his feet, scraping them along the carpet floor.
"You're not fine, Jamie. And this isn't fine. What I mean is that we'll figure this out with your dad-"
"You mean our dad."
"No! No Jamie! You know what, forget it! I hate you! That's too far!!"

I hate Jamie. I'm storming off and I'm not turning back around. I pretend I'm Usain Bolt and run as fast as my little 5'6" self can go. My legs might be nearly 16 years old, but they still have their life left in them. Oh yeah, talking about that, it's my 16th birthday in a few weeks. Kyron's is 2 days before mine, and Brooke's is 2 days after! Mark isn't my real dad either, nor will he ever be. You know what, I don't care if he's my best friend's boyfriend, I'm going to get revenge on Jamie Corvanze. What he did was unacceptable.

I'm sat here now, in a room in the office block, completely on my own. I'm sat on a bean bag in a small but spacious room about 20 feet or so from Rufus' office. I can't believe what Jamie said. As I said, Mark will never be my real dad and he never has been. He definitely isn't my dad now; he's in prison for killing lots of people! I know, I know- men going to prison doesn't make them any less of a father. But Mark- he was never my dad anyway. Ew. I'm sat here writing in my journal because there's nothing else to do and I'm bored. I can't go back to Rufus' office. I'm too upset. They've probably already left now, without me. Truth is, I don't care. I sign off my daily page of journaling which reads:

'Today:
Jamie is an idiot. Thinks Mark is my real dad- pathetic. I just want to go back to New Zealand. Actually, I want to start a life with Kyron in New Zealand. Just him and I. Him and I. Kyron and I.
I want to marry him.

Ash x'

And I shut the journal. Also, please ignore what I wrote; it's irrelevant. I stand up, throw my mini backpack over one shoulder and wipe my tears which Jamie the idiot made me produce.

"Wait!!" I shout as I see Lisha and the rest of the group walking out of Rufus' office. Hold on, why were they even in there for so long? And why did Jamie go back to the-

Oh you know what, it doesn't matter.

"I said wait!" I shout even louder. "Ahhh!"

*BOOF*
*CLANG*
*BANG*

I'm rolling and tumbling down the slope which leads to Rufus' office. I feel like I'm going to break my neck and die- I'm screaming. As my body rolls forwards and sideways, I see a moving, upside-down Lisha walking towards me, with Brooke.

*BANG*

****

What? Not again.

Tubes. Tubes and wires. You must be joking. I only know where I am because I remember what happened last time. I'm in hospital, I bet. Wait, what's that? I turn my head to my left -because I can actually move my head this time- and see an envelope. I try to stand up but yet again, nope. I can't do that. I look down and, my leg! My leg's in a...cast? Oh, I remember now. I must have broken it when I was falling down that slope. God, I'm so clumsy. Imagine breaking your leg in a detective's office block! Haha. It's pretty funny actually.

A nurse comes in and picks the envelope up from the floor. I assume she's going to tell me why I'm here.
"Hi, I'm nurse Sandra Clarke. You're Ashlyn, right?"
I nod.
"I'm just here to tell you that you've broken your leg. We've put it in a cast and you should be released from hospital in a couple of days. We just need to check on it, you know?"
I told you that's why she'd be here. I nod again, and she goes to leave the room. She's just put the envelope on the side of a chest of drawers and just before she opens the door to leave, I ask, "Please could you pass me that envelope?"

She studies it carefully before saying,
"Oh yes my love, it looks like it's addressed to you!"
I take it off her and she leaves the room. Not even 20 seconds later, I get a phone call. My phone's laying on the side of the bed, next to me. I carefully roll over onto my side to pick it up.

"Hello?"
"Hi, this is Lisha. I've been asked to deliver that envelope for you, Ash. Open it! Quickly!"
"Okay...?"

I reply, confused. She puts the phone down without saying goodbye and I carefully peel the top of the envelope, and then take out a letter which was carefully placed inside. It reads:
'Hi Ash,
This is Kyron. I miss you. I'm doing good now but I heard you're in hospital too! :(
I'm coming home tomorrow, hope I can maybe catch a visit to the hospo to see you.
Hope you get better soon,
K x'

Awe. That was so sweet of him! Why did he put it in a letter though? Why not text? Maybe something's wrong with his phone, or maybe he thought it was cuter with a letter, which I think it is. Hospo is just Kyron's way of saying hospital, by the way. It's pretty adorable. I fold it into a little card and put it up on my bedside table. It might be the cutest thing he's ever done for me. I don't know where Brooke is; she should visit her own best friend when she's in hospital, right? I understand why she didn't come last time; she was probably with Kyron, or maybe getting spoken to by the police. But she should be here now. I give her a call.

She says she's coming in a little while. Hold on, we're supposed to be going back to New Zealand soon, as the KK crime has almost been solved. What if I can't go on a plane? I pick up my phone again and quickly start to Google: 'Can you go abroad with a broken leg with a cast?'

Phew. I have to wait 48 hours from when the cast is first put on but it's fine. We were only due to go home in about a week or so. As I put in my journal, I can't wait to start a life with Kyron over there! Wait, where is my journal? No one is allowed to touch that, and I mean NO ONE. NOT EVEN BROOKE. NOT EVEN KYRON. If anyone gets their hands on that, it's game-over. The main reason I don't let anyone in it, you may be asking, is all of my amazing mini-stories about memories me and Kyron could make in the future. For example, (ooh I love talking about this) I once wrote a mini-story where Kyron and I went to a pet shop and bought our own dog! We had our own house- it was a beach house, duh- and we even had a kid. Oh my god. That's bad. I shouldn't be thinking about having children with Kyron. We're not even 16 yet! I mean, I guess with parent consent, it's legal. And seeming as we don't have parents... oh, shut up Ash!

I sit up in my bed and start to draw on my cast. If you can't tell, I'm extremely bored. I want to ring Kyron and see how he is. He said that he's coming home tomorrow so that means he must be only a few rooms away from me right now. We're both in the same hospital or 'hospo' as Kyron would call it- Bridgewood hospital. I roll onto my side again deciding to give him a ring, taking the fact that he could be tired or asleep into consideration, but suddenly I get another call.

"Hey, Ash. Sorry to bother you, it's Lisha again. Rufus has just rang me to tell you that Susan Corvanze, Mark's husband and Jamie's mum, has also been arrested for participating in the killings during the KK crime. I've told the others; Jamie's really upset. Just been told to let you know. Get well soon."

She ends the call. Shoot. As bad as this sounds, I'd sort of forgotten about the KK crime. All of this talk about Kyron has been distracting my mind. Wait, Sue Corvanze? Oh my God.

Ah well, I guess Kyron's more important than solving crimes anyway.

Ash x
