Chapter 5 - Deja Vu

Star of Gryffindor just hit 8k reads!

Before we start this chapter, @emil_law asked me to give you guys an idea of what Astra's room might look like. Well, since technically I've described two rooms of hers this summer, I'll just show them both, as best I can.

I always imagine the one at Andromeda's house, where Astra actually lives (the one I don't think I ever described), as looking something like this:

And the one at the Malfoys is a lot different, and much older, so picture this room:

With this ceiling:

And there you have it! That's what I picture when I think of those rooms. I feel like I should make a Pinterest board for just stuff about this series sometimes.

Anyway, my favorite ship from the original series is Romione. It's honestly the sweetest pairing ever. I mean, you've got Ron, who's caring and supportive and funny and exactly the sort of influence Hermione needs to keep her taken care of and not lost in her books and thoughts, and to keep her from getting too serious, and we all know he would die for Hermione. Then there's Hermione, who's smart and resourceful and can keep Ron from making stupid or rash decisions, and loves Ron to the ends of the earth. They were made for each other. I love them.

"WAKE UP EVERYONE! IT'S SEPTEMBER FIRST!"

I opened my eyes, frowning. I could Elcie hear roaming about in the hallway, banging on one of her siblings' doors and commanding them to get up. Were most wizarding children this excited when they finally got to go to Hogwarts? I I honestly couldn't remember Lily being like this. I rolled over to look at the clock and saw it was 6:30 in the morning, and groaned and covered my head with my pillow.

It was not enough. Within a minute, the banging had started up at my door. "Astra! Wake up! It's September first! How are you all asleep?"

"You think anyone's asleep anymore?" Ciara's voice carried from her room.

"Hurry up!" Elcie shouted back. "Dad's going to be making pancakes and he said I could eat them all if you didn't come down before seven!"

"It's not even seven?" Scorpios cursed loudly enough for me to hear him, and I heard Elcie gasp. "What are you doing even awake?"

"I'm telling Mummy you said that!"

"Wait, no!" There was a series of thumps and the sound of Scorpius stumbling into the hall. "Don't, Elcie, come on..."

"WAKE UP EVERYONE!" I had a feeling she'd yelled that right in Scorpius's ear.

I rolled my eyes I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep now. Grudgingly, I slipped out of bed and trudged over to the door, shivering now that I'd left the warmth of my blankets.

Scorpius was trying to bribe Elcie into silence when I walked out into the hall. He seemed relieved for the distraction. "Morning Astra. You certainly didn't hear any choice words?"

"Of course not," I said, yawning. "I definitely couldn't hear anything at all. That's why I'm out in the hall at six thirty in the morning. Because I didn't hear anything."

"I've been up since five," Elcie said, unconsciously bouncing a bit. "You really enjoy sleeping late, don't you?"

"Six thirty is anything but late," Ciara's grumpy voice said from behind me. "Elcie, I hope your dorm mates are all morning people, or one of them might kill you one Saturday."

"Come on," Elcie exclaiming, ignoring her sister. "Get dressed! Get ready! We have to go!"

"In three and a half hours!" Scorpius exclaimed. He rolled his eyes and turned back to his room. I did the same, stifling another yawn.

The morning went by quickly, though Elcie kept complaining that it was taking forever. It wasn't hard to make sure everything I needed was packed, because I hadn't really unpacked in the first place. Scorpius had enlisted me and Elcie to help him find several of his books that had disappeared overnight, though, so I had my fair share of running around.

At ten o'clock, after finishing off the last of Mr. Malfoy's pancakes, it was time to go. Elcie darted around, getting in the way, as we dragged out trunks outside and piled into the backseat of the car. All four of us fit in the backseat, to my surprise. Maybe all wizarding cars were like that.

On the ride to King's Cross, Ciara and I got into a slight argument about whether Elcie would do better in Slytherin or Gryffindor (and by slight I mean Mr. Malloy had to pull over, confiscate our wands, and turn Scorpius's hair back to its normal shade of blond), but other than that it was uneventful. Scorpius's was halfway through talking up Hufflepuff House (because Ciara and I had sort of disregarded Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff as options) when we reached the station.

"I wonder who your new Head of House will be," I said as we walked through the muggle platforms towards 9 and 10.

"Don't know. I hope it's not Haverna, though." Scorpius shuddered.

"If it's Haverna, I'm dropping out," Ciara said, then seemed to realize she was talking to me and rolled her eyes. "Though I'm sure that's exactly what you want?"

I shrugged. "I mean, normally I'd be all for anything that ended in you dropping out, but then Scorp and Lily would be stuck with Haverna, so it's not quite worth it."

We'd reached the wall, so before Ciara could answer, I pushed my luggage trolley through it. Once on the other side, I scanned the crowds, standing on tiptoe to see if I could catch a sign of turquoise hair. As Scorpius came through the barrier behind me, I caught sight of Teddy, and set off, motioning at Scorpius to follow.

The Malfoys all followed me over to Teddy, Aunt Andromeda, and Victoire. Aunt Narcissa and Aunt Andromeda set off talking immediately, but I could barely catch what they were saying in all the noise surrounding me.

"So, how was it, kiddo?"

"Pretty good." I smirked at Scorpius. "I mean, the only person I had to hang out with was that idiot—"

"This idiot who just so happened to practically finish your History of Magic essay," Scorpius said, smirking back.

I turned to Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy. "Thanks for having me, really. It was nice."

Mrs. Malfoy hugged me, smiling. "It was our pleasure."

Just then, the train whistle blew, signaling five minutes until eleven. I quickly hugged Victoire and Teddy as the Malfoys said their goodbyes to each other.

"We'll miss you, Astra," Toire said, smiling. "Work hard, and maybe you'll make prefect next year."

"As if, with Rose for competition." I hoisted Anastasia's cage. "Well... Goodbye. I'll write."

"And we'll write too," Aunt Andromeda promised, hugging me tightly. She looked like she was tearing up.

"Just don't get into trouble, all right? Have an awesome year," Teddy said, grinning. For a moment, his hair turned the same dirty blonde as mine. "And we'll see you next summer, okay?"

"What, I can't come home for Christmas?" I asked, trying to sound like I was joking. Honestly, I was a bit hurt. They didn't want me for Christmas?

"Of course you can. In fact, we'd love it. But something tells me you won't want to come, though." Teddy hugged me. "If you want to skip the festivities, though, come home, by all means."

Another whistle blew, for two minutes until departure, and I stepped back, waving. "Bye!"

Aunt Andromeda burst into tears, and I wasn't sure if I needed to stay and comfort her, but Teddy waved me off and put an arm around her. I waved once more before running towards the train.

James and Albus had claimed one of the middle compartments, and that's where I found them, Wren, Colette, Rose, and Scorpius almost as soon as I got on. The compartment was almost too full, but Albus and Wren scooted over to make room for me on their bench, and I sat down, grinning.

"So, how many times did you duel Ciara?" James asked from across the compartment.

"None, excuse you. Are you implying I can't control myself?"

"Well, you don't have an amazing track record," Colette said, then dodged as I reached across Albus to slap her.

"She was particularly well-behaved last week," Scorpius said, which made Rose giggle. James made a face and scooted closer to the wall, farther from them.

"Where's Elcie?" I asked Scorpius.

"Don't know exactly. She was with Ciara... Could have gone off by herself, I suppose." Scorpius chuckled. "Sorry if she was a bit excited his morning—"

"A bit."

"—because she's normally not like that. Actually, I don't think she's been that crazy since her little league Quidditch team won the won the national championship."

"Oh, I remember that!" Albus exclaimed. "Hugo was on the other team, remember?"

"Wait, there's little league Quidditch?" I glanced around, confused. "You trust children on brooms fifty feet in the air?"

"Of course not," James said, rolling his eyes. "They don't go higher than five feet. Kid's brooms. Mum had all of us do it when we were little." He grinned. "One year my team was practically all Weasleys."

"Oh, hey, Drake Wood's dad is the one who started little league Quidditch," Albus said. "He wanted Dad to coach a team, but he was too busy teaching."

I glanced around again, surprised and amused. Colette shared my expression. "Definitely a British thing. France has nothing like that."

"Well, France has less wizards," Scorpius said, rolling his eyes. "I mean... I think it does..."

"No, everything's just more spread out in Europe," Colette said airily, glancing out the window.

"What was Beauxbatons like?" Rose asked. "I've been doing research recently, of course, but there's nothing better than someone who's actually been there."

Colette shrugged. "I was a first year, Rose..."

"But there aren't differences?"

"Well... At least half the school is one eighth Veela." She shrugged.

"So, basically, all the girls are hotter?" James asked. I rolled my eyes at him. "What? I mean, look at Toire. She's prettier than average."

"Probably just the Weasley in her," Scorpius said, before putting his arm around Rose.

"Right." James rolled his eyes. "Get a room." Scorpius quickly pulled away, him and Rose blushing profusely.

Suddenly, the compartment door slid open, and Lacy Macmillan and Iris Brown stuck their heads in. I could see Eric Finnigan standing in the corridor, waving at Al from behind the glass. I felt Wren tense up next to me, and I smiled briefly at her.

"Astra!" Lacy exclaimed. "I heard you were at the Malfoys all week, I'm so sorry—"

"Excuse you?" Scorpius glared at Lacy, who just smiled sweetly.

"I meant about Ciara, of course." Iris and Lacy both giggled, at the sight of Rose and Scorpius sitting so close, I'd guess. "I expect you're happy to be back at school?" she asked pointedly.

"I expect you had a reason for coming here?" Colette asked curtly, drawing their attention back to our side of the compartment.

"Oh, right!" Iris exclaimed. "Did you hear? They're—"

She stopped, her smile vanishing as she finally caught sight of Wren. Lacy glanced towards us, then frowned. "Oh. I see." She glanced at Iris, then started out the door. "I'll see you at the feast," she said coldly. Iris followed her, sending a glare in Wren's direction before sliding the door closed with a slam.

There was a very tense, awkward silence. Wren was staring at her lap, so everyone else glanced around uncertainly. Were we supposed to say something? Let her talk first? I didn't know. I moved to give her a hug, but she flinched, and I stopped.

"I'm fine," she whispered, glancing up at me. "Sorry."

"A lot of people will probably react that way," Colette said, glancing at Wren. "I don't think many people trust you. You won't find a lot of people as forgiving as Rose." Wren simply nodded, her face unreadable.

I, on the other hand, frowned. "And why shouldn't they trust her?"

"You want me to answer that?" Colette asked. "Because I will, but since you're always telling me I could 'be a bit more sensitive'—"

"Colette, no, don't." James stood up. "I think I'm going to go find the candy lady. Astra, want to come?"

I most certainly did not, but I stood up anyway and followed him out to the hall. "What?"

"Astra, really, you've got to think a bit more."

"About what, exactly?"

James glanced at our compartment door. "What Wren's going through. She thinks she's done something awful, did you know that? She probably thinks she deserves the way people will treat her."

"She doesn't, though!" And if people were going to treat her the way Lacy and Iris had, I wouldn't stand for it.

James held up a finger. "I know that. You know that. Albus knows that. But she needs to figure that out for herself. We can't make her believe something if she doesn't want to."

I glared at him. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means that you've got to be a little careful around her. Don't ever let her think she's right, but don't be so forceful about it, you know?"

I stared at him. Was this the James Potter I knew? The one who never held his tongue, and always acted on impulse? He was telling me to be careful what I said? I didn't believe I needed to sit by and watch Wren go through whatever my classmates would throw at her. But I couldn't disagree with James, really, because he had a point about the forcefulness. That didn't make it any less strange. I shook my head, closing my eyes. "Where on earth did this come from?"

"What?"

"All this... This caution! I didn't know you could even do that!"

James paused, then frowned. "I... I don't really know. I just feel a bit protective of Wren. I don't want anything to happen to her."

I nodded. "I know. I feel the same way." I glanced down the corridor. "Think we should actually go find the trolley?"

James thought for a second, then shook his head. "I don't think they'll notice."

No one commented on the fact that we came back empty handed. Rose was explaining little league Quidditch in more detail to Colette (who didn't look interested at all), and Albus looked like he was pondering scooting into my seat to comfort Wren, who seemed frozen the way she'd been when we left. I sat down between them, and muttered, "I'll make them trust you." Wren quickly glanced at me, looking slightly alarmed, so I smiled sweetly. Inside, though, I was planning how best to hex anyone who tried to do anything to my friend.

~~~~
We reached the station by nightfall, and dismounted with everyone else. We followed the crowd towards the carriages, but not before Elcie ran up to give Scorpius and me one last hug before she took the boats. I whispered that she'd do awesome in Gryffindor as her head was pressed against for shoulder for a moment. She gave me a skeptical looked before turning and disappearing into the crowd.
As we walked towards the horseless carriages, I glanced at Wren, smiling. She didn't seem to notice me. No, instead she was staring at where a horse would have been, looking rather terrified. I was about to ask what was wrong, but James seemed to notice as well and slowed down to walk next to her. I didn't catch what he was saying, and he waved me on when we'd reached a carriage while they paused outside. Shrugging, I climbed in after Colette and sat down. Wren and James clambered in not a minute later, Wren appearing quite relieved.
Most of the ride was spent in debating what House Hugo and Elcie would get into. I didn't know Hugo well enough to make any sort of guess at his, but I was adamant that Elcie would get Gryffindor, almost as sure as Scorpius was that she'd get Slytherin or Ravenclaw. We'd been having this (good-natured) argument all week, but we both had known it wouldn't really end until the Sorting Hat placed her somewhere.
As the castle drew nearer, we fell quiet. I had a sense of deja vu looking across at James and Scorpius and Rose, and seeing Al and Wren beside me. Everything was so different, but right then it didn't seem like it. For the two minutes until we pulled up outside the castle, I could almost imagine that nothing had happened.
That is, until we stepped out of the carriage and joined the crowd. Well, we tried to. Most people shied away once they got a good look at us. I glared at them, but Professor Longbottom was standing at the door so I couldn't very well make a scene. James caught my eye, and held his wand up slightly, but I shook my head. We couldn't exactly hex everyone. Not just yet, at least.
Once we'd gotten into the Great Hall, Scorpius waved and set off for the Slytherin table, while the rest of us turned towards Gryffindor. James and I sat down on either side of Wren, and Albus, Rose, and Colette sat across. For several minutes, the seats on either side of us remained empty, which wasn't normal. I saw the rest of the students in my year glance at us, then walk right past us and sit down near the end. Finally, Fred, Lucy, Roxanne, and Louis Weasley joined us, and apparently two people between you and a "criminal" was enough because people began sitting down at our section of the table.
"Look, that must be the new Potionsmaster," Albus said, pointing at an older man sitting at the staff table. I didn't recognize him at all, and none of my friends did either. He was talking with Professor Sinastra, and seemed to laugh a lot. Neat white hair covered his head, and he seemed quite at home already. I could only hope he would be that nice in the Potions classroom, without the help of Madam Rosmerta's mead.
The Great Hall filled up quickly, and soon the doors were opening and the first years were parading down the hall. All the Weasleys and Potters waved at Hugo, who was staring at the ceiling in awe. I caught sight of Elcie near the back and waved at her. She was almost skipping.
They came to a halt in front of the stool with the Sorting Hat sitting on it. Several kids were watching it curiously, though a few (like Hugo and Elcie) didn't seem surprised at all. Not even when a rip near its brim opened and it started to sing.
Many years I've been here,
And many I'll remain.
I've sorted many people
Who've gone their different ways.
Many through the years have thought
That their House is the best.
However, let me tell you,
They're all equally blest.
Just because you stand under
The red of Gryffindor
Does not mean you're brave
Or have courage at the core.
Children, please believe me,
It's not about where you are.
It's about your choices
Which seem to drive you all apart.
But now you'll face a challenge,
That's torn this school apart.
You'll have to stand united,
And support with all your heart.
If you will overcome this,
It will take everyone
Standing together
And cheering loud as one.
The battle cries of Slytherin,
The House of the cunning and sly,
Must join with those of Gryffindor,
Who are brave and chivalry-wise.
The love of learning in Ravenclaw,
Who praise the quick of mind,
Will help the Hufflepuff brothers,
Who are hardworking and kind.
All must stand united,
Around whoever is chosen.
Be he Gryffindor, Ravenclaw,
Hufflepuff or Slytherin.
Do not let House bias
Set you off a friend.
You never know what's lurking
Beneath a crest, within.
My last words to you are
Never judge by sight.
You never know what you'll find
If you try with all your might.
The hall burst into applause, though several people seemed confused, including me. A challenge? Where all the Houses had to work together? I glanced over at the Slytherin table. I could stand about four people over there, maximum. Surely the Hat was just talking about mending interHouse relationships or something. I quickly pushed it out of my mind as the Sorting began.
"Abner, Nadia," Professor Longbottom called. A little girl with messy red hair stumbled out of the line and towards the stool. The Hat contemplated her for only a few moments before sending her the Hufflepuff. I let my mind wander as the next kids were sorted. I didn't care about any of them until Elcie. Buchanan, Chloe, was a Slytherin, as was Carrow, Mason; Cunningham, Madison; and Cliffton, Leona. The first Gryffindor was a little boy named Adrian Elanders, before a pair of twins (Fade, Vivian and Lavinia) got sent to Slytherin, followed by Grace, Silvia, to Ravenclaw and Heathshaw, Taurus, to Gryffindor. I tuned back in as the L's started going by (LaHue, Camryn, to Ravenclaw, then Lark, William, to Hufflepuff).
I caught Scorpius's eye from across the Hall as Lynch, Aaron, was sent to Slytherin. Any moment now. I felt a little secondhand excitement for Elcie, but more importantly we were about to see who was right about her House.
"Malfoy, Elcie!"
Elcie walked towards the stool, seeming more steady than most of the other first years. As the Hat was being lowered into her head, though, she locked eyes with me, and I saw a bit of fear. I smiled at her as the Hat fell over her eyes.
Many kids took only a few seconds to get sorted. The average tonight had been somewhere around thirty. However, the Hat seemed to be having a little trouble with Elcie. A minute ticked by. Then another. I glanced over at the Slytherin table, where Scorpius and Ciara were whispering, looking a little worried. Another minute. A few bursts of whispers were heard, and I saw Elcie squirming on the stool a bit. Another minute passed.
"She's going to be a Hatstall," Rose whispered, staring at Elcie. "Another minute, and she'll be a Hatstall..."
"A what?"
"Someone who's sorting takes more than five minutes," Wren answered automatically, then seemed surprised she'd spoken. I smiled at her, then glanced back up to the front.
"She's a Hatstall!" someone shouted as another minute ticked away. "It's been five minutes! She's a Hatstall!"
Professor Pouri stood up quickly, hands raised for silence, as chatter broke out among everyone. It quickly calmed down, but everyone was watching with renewed interest now.
"There hasn't been a true Hatstall since 1971," Rose whispered across the table.
"Who was it?" James asked, rolling his eyes.
Rose gave him a look, as if annoyed by his ignorance. "Peter Pettigrew, of course."
"Oh... Oh, I see..." James quickly reverted his attention back to the front.
"She's a Malfoy, right?" I heard Fred whisper. "Why's it taking so long? The Hat forget how to say Slytherin?"
Suddenly, the Hat's rip opened, and silence fell immediately. It had been six minutes and twenty-seven seconds, and finally the first true Hatstall in fifty years was about to be sorted.
"GRYFFINDOR!"
The silence remained unbroken. Elcie seemed surprised when Professor Longbotrom lifted the Hat off her head, and glanced at our mute table. I frowned at my Housemates. Yes, she was a Malfoy, but she was a Gryffindor none the less. Without even thinking about it, I jumped to my feet and started clapping. Rose quickly joined me, and after a few seconds, all of Gryffindors had joined in. Elcie cast an apologetic smile at her siblings before rushing down the Gryffindor table to squeeze in between me and Roxanne.
The Sorting continued as normal. Mayfield, Selena, was sent to Hufflepuff, and Mourad, Natalie, to Slytherin. Peterson, Kendra, to Slytherin; Roza, Esther, to Gryffindor, Summers, Kyle, to Ravenclaw. I watched Hugo, who looked quite tiny next to some of the first years. He kept glancing at Rose, who was smiling at him and mouthing advice that she'd surely been giving him for the past three years.
"Weasley, Hugo," finally rang out, when there were only five students left. Hugo smiled at the Weasleys at the Gryffindor table, looking a little sick, and quickly crossed over to the stool. Professor Longbottom placed the Hat on his head, then stepped back. I saw Rose holding tightly to Albus's arm, though she looked completely unaware of it, watching her little brother with wide eyes.
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
The Hufflepuff table cheered, along with all of Hugo's cousins. Rose beamed at him as he proudly walked to his new House, then turned to Al. "I knew it! Didn't I tell you he'd be a Hufflepuff?" Albus was laughing, and nodded.
"Hey, that means we've got Weasley-Potters in all four Houses! First time ever!" Fred exclaimed. He glanced at James and raised his eyebrows, and together they jumped to their feet and started chanting, "Weasley! Potter! Weasley! Potter!" until Lucy cast a silencing spell on them because the staff looked quite annoyed.
The last of the children were sorted, ending with Zelton, Paul, a Gryffindor, and Professor Pouri stood up to give his annual speech. "Welcome, students, to another year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"
A loud cheer rang out, and Fred and James glared at Lucy, who hadn't lifted the silencing spell. She simply smiled at them.
"Now, before we begin the feast, all the normal announcements. Mr. Filch has asked that I remind you that there is to be no magic done in the corridors, and that he has added 'Weasley's Bird Bombs' to the expansive list of products forbidden here at school. For the full list, feel free to go visit his office off the entrance hall.
"Secondly, students, may I remind you that the Forbidden Forest is forbidden, and under no circumstances should you venture in there, unless you wish to be mauled by centaurs." Pouri seemed like he was suppressing a shudder. Albus caught my eye from across the table and raised an eyebrow slightly, no doubt thinking of the end of second year when we almost had been mauled by centaurs, along with Professor Pouri.
"Now, students, let us honor this year's Headboy and Headgirl, Matthew Hopkins and Faith Lindsey!" A boy stood up from the Hufflepuff table, waving and grinning at the student body. The girl was a Slytherin, and only stood up when one of her friends made her, but smiled at us all the same.
"All right, all right," Pouri said, smiling, raising a hand for silence. "May I introduce our new Potionsmaster, and Head of Slytherin House, William Lockley!"
The older man we'd noticed before stood up. He was tall and rather thin, and looked a little like a stork. He smiled and nodded out at the student body, of course paying particular attention to his new charges. The Slytherins seemed quite pleased with their Head of House, though that might have just been because one of the alternatives would have been Haverna.
"Now, on a more serious note," Pouri said. The noise level dropped quickly. "I understand that several of your parents, and perhaps even some of you, disagree with some particular choices I have made recently." He frowned out at the sea of faces. "Let me make it clear that I stand by my choices, and I approve every single student who will be walking these halls this year. As does the Ministry of Magic."
"Doubtful," Wren whispered. I glanced at her, and she gave me a small smile before looking down at her plate. I suddenly realized the obvious, that Pouri was talking specifically about her.
"So I will not tolerate any bullying or rumors this year. Is that understood? We want to make a good impression, anyway, don't we? Now, let the feast begin!"
Food appeared on the golden platters in front of us, and everyone quickly filled their plates. I introduced Elcie to my friends, and she quickly became a favorite with the Weasleys. Roxanne got her started on Quidditch, and they didn't stop talking until dessert appeared.
When the feast was finally over, we followed the prefects and first years up to the Gryffindor common room, to learn the password. Lucy had finally taken the silencing charm off Fred and James, and they were revolting against this "cruel and unusual punishment" by daring everyone they could find to stay up all night with them and throw a start-of-term party. James asked Albus, Wren, and me, but it was a little much for the first day, even for me, so we declined, and Wren followed me up to our dorm.
Lacy and Iris were already up there when we arrived, but when they saw Wren they immediately began ignoring us. Colette, who was sitting on her bed with a spellbook, caught my eye and rolled hers. It would be a long year if Lacy and Iris didn't get over themselves, that was for sure.
🔵 🔴 Guys, important announcement: I am going to be out of the country for the next two weeks, so I won't be able to update until July 11th. I'm so sorry! Anyway, hope you can wait that long (at least I didn't do a cliffhanger), and I'll see you when I get back!🔴 🔵
Question of the Day: Favorite ship in this series and why? This doesn't have to have Astra in it!
Vote and comment! The Jastra vs Astralbus war will commence with that question, I already know...
