Prompt: Write something about twins who are running away from their parents. They can be running away because of anything and it's any time period.

The room was silent and dark; the one and only sound? Heavy breathing coming from under the bed. It was ten o'clock at night on November 5th, 1681.

James pulled his twin sister Amelia closer to him as they both shook with fear. They heard screaming coming from outside their bedroom door; it was their Mother. Their Father was an abusive man throughout all of the twins lives. He would always return home at night drunk and angry. He would beat his wife senseless every night— and usually the kids too.

James and Amelia were sixteen-year-old twins. They each had bright blonde hair inherited from their Mother with green eyes. This man in the house now was only their step-father. Not even their biological.

James gripped his sister tightly as the door to the bedroom flung wide open. A pair of heavy boots stomped across the room, flinging the closet door open and throwing things off the nightstand.

James and Amelia both held their breath as the boots stopped off to the side of the bed right in front of Amelia. They stayed there for what seemed like an eternity.

Amelia closed her eyes tightly shut praying their step-father would go away... but he didn't. Instead, a hand reached down under the bed and gripped Amelia's forearm. Amelia screamed loudly as she was dragged from under the bed, James did everything he could to keep her away from their step-father, but he wasn't strong enough to keep her with them.

James slipped out from the other side of the bed as Amelia was dragged through the door into the small living room. Amelia saw her Mother lying on the ground bloody from her husbands beating.

James felt his blood beginning to boil on the inside. He balled his hands into fists and slammed his fist into his step-fathers face. He did it over and over and over again until he would let his sister go. Once their step-father did, James grabbed ahold of Amelia and they ran towards the door.

"Get back here, you two!" their step-father shouted in a voice of rage.

The twins didn't listen. They ran outside into their little village and headed towards the forest. They wanted to get away from there as fast as possible. They ran until their lungs ached and they had to stop to gasp for air.

"What are we going to do?" Amelia asked her brother in a frightened voice as she panted, tears starting to dance in her eyes.

James tried to calm his twin down. "Sis, it's fine! Calm down!" He placed a gentle hand on his sister's shoulder. "We can't go back there," he began.

Amelia flung her head back in the direction they came from. "But Mother is—"

"Mother can take care of herself," James interrupted. He looked deep into her green eyes. "Do you want to go back to that house? Back to that monster?" Amelia didn't respond at first. James gripped her arms tightly and shook her. "Do you?!" he shouted.

Amelia started crying. "No!" she yelled.

"Then we have to go!" James pulled his sister along. He didn't know where he was taking her, he had nowhere else to go. Their village was the only home he had ever known.

They continued to run through the night; not looking back for in fear their step-father would be right behind them and drag them back to that awful home of theirs.

Amelia finally pulled away from her brother's grip. "James, can you please tell us where we're going?" She panted heavily once more. "It's very dark out here. We can't see where we're going, I'm tired, there could be wolves or anything out here."

James turned to look at his sister. It was hard to see her in the darkness. The only thing he saw was her green eyes sparkling in the moonlight. "I love you, Amelia. We may be twins, but I came out first. It's still my duty to protect you. Please, just trust me."

Amelia grinned slightly and nodded her head. "Alright, James. I will trust you." She allowed her brother to embrace her warmly. She didn't know what the future was going to hold for the both of them, all she knew was that from here on out James was the only person in the world she could ever trust.
