Thousand smiles
Somewhere in space, a silver needle sparkles trough the endless night, a voice suddenly resonates in the pod breaking the silent slumber of the pilot.
"Solla! Solla!" — shouts the voice — "I hope I woke you up, because we received an urgent request from Andromeda sector. It's another anniversary but they go big this time. Thousands of Andromeda's first tier crypto, the kind that can pay you a trip back home."
A right hand slides gently through the air, faint lights emerge like fireflies forging infinite scrolls of symbols. Solla lets go a sigh before talking back.
"This is getting ridiculous Pharos... First the Cartwheel sector who wants to perfect its spiral shape and rotation then asks for a blue marine wavy effect on its border. "
"That was a splendid —" quickly answers Pharos before being cut again by Solla.
"One false movement and I could create a supernova! Second! The Sombrero sector! Cacti! These dumb creatures asked me to transform a part of their asteroid belt into a cacti field and add a green and red tint around for their hot sauce galaxy event."
"I loved this event; you really did a spen —"
"Wait a minute! Third! The Sunflower sector, or should I call them the Rose sector now. That was the most absurd request I had. Cutting and bending parts of the belts to transform the spiral into petals of roses. I promise you, if someone asks me to do a lotus I will just enlarge their black hole to the point that they will be named the Dead-as-fuck sector."
Pharos makes a pause before talking back with a calm voice that slowly gets nervous.
"I understand your frustration, but don't come as an innocent to me. The client may not see it, but I do. Those little last touches, small shades, sharp tags. First it was benign, doodles, little easter eggs, then it started to envelop the picture and changes the message." — Pharos stops talking, digging his memory — "Remember the military agency who wanted to decorate some civilian space roads with their ads showing them fierily holding weapons protecting citizens! Well now the lights have diminished, asteroids deviated, in a perfect way I would say. Because now it shows them firing against the people they are supposed to protect."
Solla stays silent for a moment, wincing unknowingly at Pharos before answering joyously
"Hopefully they went bankrupt and are now pursued around the galaxy for organized crimes. We can sleep tight. "
You could hear Pharos's finger massaging hits temples humming a happy tune through the comlink. Once his song finished, Pharos's voice comes back tired.
"You know what? Do your thing! With Andromeda's paycheck I will retire. I already transmitted all declaration of ownership through the galaxy at your name. All drones will answer to your command. I wanted to announce it a little friendlier, with chicken and beer, but time runs at different scales in the space and I can't stand anymore living so far away from my family by the minute." — Pharos ends with a solemn tone — "I am sorry if you hated going through it."
"I don't mind it. When I fled from the Milky sector chasing a space adventure I didn't expect to end up as a Spacescaper, carving asteroid sewing between stars dust and sun flare seeing the universe as my own Versailles gardens. So thank you Pharos and have a nice end of life"
"Brat!" — He lets go with a last jiggle — "Pharos out!"
"Solla out!"
The overwhelming darkness takes over only to hear Solla's heartbeats and growling stomach. Fluid in tube circulates around the pod to reach hers veins, giving her enough to put her to sleep. The needle loops between planets, glides near asteroids, avoids black holes and joins wormholes. Chaotic white chalk on a black board, a silver ball echoing inside a flipper, the needle reaches unknown destinations in a glimpse to ends up at Andromeda's doors.
From everywhere across the galaxy we could see a swarm of glittering needles in the skies like the reflection of furious wave on a black ceil, billions of drones came from every corner at Solla's command. Drones had all the shapes imaginable, some for simple tasks like drilling or cutting to give asteroids incredible shapes other for complex tasks like producing gravity holes for beautiful movements, or fire balls for mesmerizing and colorful lightings.
She opens slowly her eyes and reads the request again:
For its special anniversary and declaration of peace in Andromeda galaxy, we have a special request that will be remembered for eons. You too! Be a part of this unique celebration by creating a galaxy size space mural around the galaxy showing the greatness of our civilization. In the middle we would like three huge pillars of our heroes and a mural of the lost families.
Best Regards, Andromeda Sector
Payment has already be wired to Pharos.
Solla takes a deep breath, puts some music, and starts embroidering the galaxy sky.
"Every day is just an endless night, but among the darkness, if I can create thousand smiles. I will keep doing it. That's the beauty of being a Spacescaper"
