Chahat and her family settled on the sofa after lunch, the remnants of their meal still lingering in the air. They talked and laughed, their voices filling the room with warmth . Every joke, every shared memory, was an effort, a collective attempt to lift her spirits and ease the ache they all knew she carried.
Living in her ex-husband's house, now as the wife of his brother, was far from simple. The walls held memories she couldn't erase, reminders she couldn't escape. They understood her pain, even if she rarely spoke of it, they tried their best to create moments of light.
Their moment was interrupted by the doorbell.
Sneha, Chahat's mother, was going to open, when Chahat told her to stay sit.
She stood up and opened the door, only to find her husband standing on the other side.
Agastya stood there, two gift bags dangling from his hands. His eyes met hers briefly, and he offered her a small, nervous smile hesitant, almost apologetic.
He shifted his weight uneasily, the tension evident in his posture. He was nervous, even embarrassed. Facing her parents felt like walking into a storm, knowing he bore the weight of his brother's mistakes. And yet, here he was, unsure of how to bridge the chasm that had grown between them.
She gestures him to step inside, when he did she closes the door behind.
"You didn't change" She asks looking at his clothes, the same one he wore today morning for work.
He clears his throat and says "umm, I just came from university" She looks at him and then at her watch.
"It's night, almost 8" She says.
"Yaa, it took time on the bus, your house it's quiet far from the university" He breathed out.
"Call kar lete, I would pick you up" She said and then started walking, him following her.
"I don't have your number, though I'm habitual of taking buses,it's not a big deal" he softly says ,they both stop when they reach the living room.
"Kon tha beta?" His father asks, busy watching the soccer match on TV.
"It's Agastya dad" she said and everyone's gaze fell on them making him more nervous.
Agastya whispered a soft "Namaste" and bent down to touch her mother's and father's feet, seeking their blessings. They responded with simple, subtle nod, acknowledging his gesture without a word.
He then turned to her Bhai and Bhabhi, greeting them with equal respect. Her brother, however, didn't acknowledge him, his gaze distant and indifferent. Her Bhabhi, on the other hand, offered a small, restrained smile, the only sign of acknowledgment in the otherwise tense moment.
Not knowing what to do with the gift bags he places them on the table.
"What's that Agastya?" Her Bhabhi asked trying to diffuse the tension.
"It's a small gift from my side," he began, his voice steady yet tinged with nervousness. "It's my first time being here, so I thought it would be nice to bring something. We usually don't visit someone empty-handed," he added, his eyes darting briefly to gauge their reaction. As he spoke, he rubbed his palms against his pant leg, trying to discreetly wipe away the sweat betraying his unease.
"A gift?" Eeshan, Chahat's brother, said sharply, his tone dripping with sarcasm. His glare was cold and sharp as he continued, "Isn't what your brother did to my sister already enough of a 'gift' for us? And now you bring this?" His words cut through the room like a blade.
"Bhai," Chahat yelled at him, her voice sharp and filled with urgency. "Don't... koi haq nahi hai aapko inse aise baat karne ka!" Her words were laced with frustration, as she stepped forward, clearly upset by the way her brother was speaking.
"Chahat? Seriously? Iske liye tum mujh par chillane aa rahi ho?" Eeshan shot back, his voice rising with anger. "Ek din bhi nahi hua tumhari shaadi ko... have you forgotten what they did to you?" He stood up, his frustration evident in his posture. The room grew tense with his words hanging in the air.
As Eeshan stood, so did the others. Aahana quickly moved to his side, gently holding his hand, trying to calm him down with a soft gesture, urging him to stop before things escalated further.
""Bhabhi, sambhaliye apne pati ko," Chahat said sharply, her voice cold as she shot a hard glare at Eeshan. "I'm not going to tolerate someone disrespecting my husband."
She turned to Agastya, taking his hand gently in hers. He looked at her in surprise, not expecting the sudden turn of events. "I can't stay in a place where me and my husband aren't respected," she continued, her voice unwavering as she began to walk towards the exit.
Before she could reach the door, her father's voice rang out, stopping her in her tracks.
"You both are not going anywhere," he said, his tone firm and commanding. "This is your home, Chahat, and no one says otherwise. Your brother is going to apologize, and then we're going to head to dinner."
His words left no room for argument, his authority clear in the air.
Ahana shook her husband 's hands a little urging him to apologize.
He roll his eyes before spatting a small sorry.
Sneha sighs in relief "thanks for the present Agastya,it was not needed but we appreciate your efforts. maaf Karna that you had to witness this." She said smiling warmly.
He shook his head a little "it's okay auntie I deserve it." He said .
"You don't,you are not your brother, don't apologise for something you didn't do." Chahat looks at him .
"Let's eat the dinner is ready." Ahana said breaking their eye contact.

"Chahat thori der ke liye aur ruk jao" Sneha said holding her daughter's hand.
"I wish I could mum, but it's already so late, it's almost 11,i promise I will return soon okay, but before going I need to go to my room and grab some things" She said making her mum nod.
She leaves her hand and went to her room, leaving Agastya standing there.
"Agastya, why don't you go and help her" Ahana said making him nod at her thankfully.
She smiled at him and told him where her room was.

Chahat was placing her belongings into her bag when her hands brushed against a file tucked in one corner. Curious, she opened it, only to find it filled with photos-pictures of her and Aayansh together.
Her breath hitched as she flipped through them, her fingers tracing the edges of the photos. Memories flooded back as she stood there, frozen, staring at the images for what felt like an eternity.
But the sound of the door creaking open broke her trance. Snapping out of it, she hurriedly slid the file into her luggage, her heart pounding as she tried to act normal.
"What are you doing here" she asks, her voice sharp, trying to mask the uneasiness inside her.
"Bhabhi told me to come and help you" he said, his voice as always soft.
"Knock before entering in the room" she said making him nod apologetically.
"I'm almost done, just bring the books and toss it in the bag" she told him indicating to the small library on the left.
He reaches there and taking all the books he places it carefully inside luggage.
He opens his mouth to say something but then shook his head.
He didn't want her to be angry with him as well. It was better if he stayed quiet, or so he thought.
However, she noticed his hesitant demeanor. "Kuch kehna chahte ho to bol do. I won't shout," she said calmly, catching him off guard.
Her words surprised him, but after a pause, he spoke. "Isn't it difficult for you?"
She frowned slightly, confused. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," he began hesitantly, "you have such a big house-it's triple the size of mine. Aren't you uncomfortable now, living there in a storeroom-sized bedroom? You have an attached bathroom here, your personal one. Isn't it difficult using the one that everyone shares now?" he said, looking at her, his tone both curious and concerned.
She watched him with amusement, a small smile tugging at her lips. Instead of answering immediately, she moved to sit comfortably on the matted floor.
"You know what," she began, her voice quiet but steady, "ladkiyon ka koi ghar nahi hota. They have to adjust wherever they go. This is not my home. If it was, I wouldn't need to leave it. I helped to buy this house alongside my brother, but it's not mine anymore. It never was."
She paused for a moment, her gaze distant. "Meri Bhabhi ka bhi nahi hai. It's only my brother's and my parents'."
A faint smile, bitter and resigned, tugged at her lips. "But a good thing is, Bhai and Bhabhi created their own home. Me, on the other hand... I'm stuck."
Her voice faltered for a second, but she quickly regained her composure. "This is not my home. And the new one... my in-laws don't even like me."
"I never imagined my life to be like this,it was always me and Aayansh together happily married, having our own cozy home, a family of our own." She broke the eye contact and looked at her mehendi filled hands the intricate patterns now a painful reminder of broken dreams. "But I'm not that lucky, I guess. The people I loved the most... they broke me. They broke my trust."
Her voice trembled as she continued, "And me? I did wrong with you. I shouldn't have married you. You weren't at fault. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
She paused, her words hanging heavily in the air. A single tear escaped her left eye, betraying the emotions she was trying to hold back. Quickly, she wiped it away, her movements brisk, as if refusing to let her vulnerability show.
He noticed the tear but chose to stay silent, not wanting to make her uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Despite her efforts, she wasn't as strong as she tried to appear. It hurt deeply, knowing she had been cheated and broken, yet she still had to put on a strong facade for the world.
"I'm sorry" she whispers "for everything,I don't want you to be stuck in my mess" she softly said looking at him again .
He looks at her and slowly holds her hand "you don't need to be sorry,I agreed to marry you" he said even if I was forced by my mother . He though.
"You can have your own home, you know right. I can create it. I know our marriage is not what we thought it would be. But if you are not comfortable there. You can have your own home. I'm not that rich but I'm comfortable,we can buy a small house ,you can live there alone comfortably." He said ,he didn't know what he was saying he was blabbering anything that came in his mind.
"Kiya karoongi akele reheke mai? I can adjust okay,i don't want you to leave your parents for someone you don't even know."
"Now let's go,it's late, help me with the luggage" she said standing up and handing him the heavy luggage.
Sorry for the late update, I was actually busy, I am not going to justify my actions, or tell why I was busy, I have a personal life like all of you do, but I know it's wrong to dissapear without telling, and I apologize for that.
