Chapter 18: Mechanical Breather
He slipped into the hallway, finding his wounds healed as the person went inside another room, injecting Ainsley with a needle.
"What are you doing?"
They pointed at the young prince squirming, slowly waking back up.
"My mission isn't to just be your guiding star."
"I can't work with them though! Every other day they're trying to torture me one way or another."
"You survived in that world for eight years. Why give up now?"
"I don't have the power to challenge them."
"You'll need that same level of power to save your brother, won't you?"
"Can't you go back and save them?"
"Time reversal is a rarity even within our world. If he's the reason you've gotten this far, he'll be the key to help you get through them."
"Wait, before you go. I have to ask. I know what happened in the past. Were my parents planning on using the Voids for war? Would I be the same as the other heirs if we had switched roles?"
They pointed to his heart. "All of your paths will converge in time. You have all the answers in your heart. It's up to decide how you'll decide with theirs," vanishing right in from of his eyes.
"My heart, huh," returning back to Calypsa's dorm.
"You're back," pinching his cheeks. "What made you think you could fight two heirs at one day and get away with it?"
"I'm tired of them playing judge, jury and executioner. According to them, I can summon the Voids to my will."
"So that's what Ainsley was trying to test. Dumbki, you have to get better at reading them."
"Are you seriously defending them? What if they did that to you?"
"Trust me, I know. There's a good reason I'm keeping my distance as well. Still, if your magic power grows strong enough, defeating a Void could save your image. You haven't checked your Quilter?"
"No, my phone's not from here and I'm not downloading an app to see people hate me more than usual."
She snatched his phone. "A little primitive, I can get you something much better," about to smash it.
"No way," stealing it back. "This has almost everything I've worked on for the past four years! Is there a way I can "
"Hmm, I have an idea," leaning to his face. "Wanna go out with me?"
He cringed. "It's not that I want to say no," punching his loins as they hardened. "But I still don't know you enough to say yes. You're not dating anyone?"
"And after we slept together and everything," fake whimpering to his amusement and dismay. It's not like you have someone. Do you?"
He sucked his teeth. "Fine."
She eagerly pulled out the broom. "Hop on!"
They flew out of the phoenix dorm, him holding onto her as they glided through the night sky, saying goodbye to campus.
"Pretty nice view, ain't it," turning around to see him sweating and panicking.
"Still afraid of heights huh," whispering Mensa and Antlia to blast up trees and transform the broom in a wider shape as well as seatbelts for them both. "Better."
He grinned. "Merci, beauty."
"Mercy? Oh I haven't punished you in a while," she teased, leading him to smile with annoyance.
"Less pain please," spotting his dorm. "It's so weird the dorm is on the four corners, but they abandoned it completely."
"In due time, you'll be a great frat leader."
"Uhh, I've heard some bad stories, I'd rather make it a house open for anyone to join," letting the wind cool off his thoughts. "I get it, you're closer to them than me. But there's gotta be people at this school that won't worship them like sheep. Like the professors can't do anything if they're not around. What if something happens to you?"
A gentle touch covered his bulging nerves. "You'll make it work. It wouldn't be the first time you've done the impossible."
"Yeah yeah, look in my heart," taking a deep breath and closed his eyes. Imagining four bars. The fire was growing, the earth was still as low, the water was slightly higher, and the air was just as low. He concentrated, feeling a sense of air as he blew wind from his back as Calypsa felt a kick of speed briefly accelerating them.
"Your elemental power's growing? Nice!"
"Wait," trying to spot his constellation, describing it as counting two stars connecting.
"The more stars that'll connect, you'll know your StellArts. And look!"
Underneath them was now a neon city that didn't look too dissimilar to a trip to Manhattan, except with elements of the other kingdoms. He spotted a greenhouse skyscraper alongside traditional buildings, several shops lined up flavored with their own elemental and star themed flair, unEarthly pets, and more.
"Say hello to Cusp Central."
"It feels like a festival more than a city," marveling and recalling similarities between Umbra Sanctuary which he asked her about.
"Yeah, your ancestors and the others were working on making a city that could house people from any society, so they borrowed land from the Umbra Sanctuary to make it. Before everything happened, you could say Umbra was the suburbs, and Cusp Central was the urban environment."
"Awesome," as they descended towards the more street views, watching people play on hoverboards. "Wait, hoverboards that go more than two feet in the air?"
"Yeah," dumbfounded. "Your other home didn't?"
"Not yet! This is way cooler," taking a picture as she drifted through busy and lackadaisical streets until heading at a dark alley with a dead end.
After she saw the coast was clear, she pulled out a sphere.
"Nullshade." A magic portal opened in front of them, and he followed her through it, stumbling into a mechanical wonderland. Different devices and machines were tied and connected to different tubes, cables, magic circles, and contraptions.
"Calypsa, don't tell me your staff is acting up again," said an old man, hunching their back. Wearing glasses, a coat with a fur scarf, and wide ears under his dark skin. "Wait, is this," approaching him. "Prince Sehki?"
"Um," watching him inspect him like a science project. "I'm guessing I knew you before I left?!"
"Aha, I knew you weren't killed! Come on," grabbing clothes and threads for Calypsa, who started weaving and patching out Sehki's outfit."That Xia's girl gotten too strong for her own good," showing the monitor of the videos being recorded.
"They put that online?"
"Yup. So let's get your revenge!"
