xii. A Royal Welcome
Leila's legs were shaky as they landed. She let go of Thor's arm and looked around to see that she was in a golden dome-shaped building.
A dark-skinned man with bright golden eyes walked over. He looked strangely familiar to her.
"Welcome home, prince Thor." He bowed deeply. "Loki," he nodded his head at the raven-haired man, who murmured something in response under the metal mask on his face.
The dark-skinned man turned to Leila next. "Hmm..." He gently picked up one of her hands and his eyes flashed. Blue light flashed and warmth spread through the room. "Ah yes, there is great power within you." He dropped her hand and dipped his head.
"Leila, this is Heimdall. Heimdall, Leila." Thor smiled as he introduced the two.
"Nice to meet you, Heimdall." Leila said.
"You as well, my lady." He responded with a smile.
"Are my mother and father present?" Thor asked.
"Yes, they have been awaiting your arrival."
"Let us go, then." Thor situated the containment device in between Loki's hands, acting as handcuffs. He walked out of the building onto a shimmering rainbow bridge. Leila and Loki followed.
"Wow," The woman murmured. The bridge was solid under her feet, despite its translucent appearance. In the distance, Leila could see a beautiful golden palace rising above a large city.
"It's beautiful." She said.
"I am glad you think so." Thor had slowed his pace to walk beside her.
As they walked closer, the excitement and nervousness inside Leila began to rise.
The cobblestone road clicked underneath Leila's boots as the group entered the city. Asgardians gazed at them in wonder.
"The princes have returned!"
"Who is that?"
"Someone must tell the king."
On the inside, the palace was just as beautiful as the gilded outside. Guards dressed in golden armor bowed as Thor passed them.
They entered a large room, tall ceiling supported by massive pillars. A golden throne rested atop stairs and carved windows behind it cast light onto the floor.
"My sons!" A beautiful, older-looking woman started running towards the group. A page from a Norse Mythology book appeared in Leila's mind. Frigga, queen of Asgard.
Frigga wrapped Thor in a hug, then turned to Loki. "My dear... what have you done?" He couldn't respond, the metal mask still over his mouth, but his eyes crinkled in what looked to be sadness. The woman tightly hugged her other son.
Frigga took both of Leila's hands in hers. She turned to Thor. "Is this the woman you spoke of?" He nodded. "You are very beautiful, my dear."
Leila blushed. "Thank you."
"I can sense a great power inside of you. When did it start?"
"About a year ago, when Thor first came to Earth."
"Ah. I know a thing or two about magic, I think we could figure out how to control that."
Leila nodded with a smile. Frigga touched Thor on the shoulder. "You two are very sweet together," she whispered.
"Mother, we are friends," Thor sounded exasperated as he shook his head. He met Leila's eyes and both of them ducked their heads immediately.
Frigga shrugged and winked at Leila. "My mistake! Now, let's go see your father."
The asgardian queen led the three of them to the throne at the back of the room, where an older man with white hair and a golden eye patch sat. He held a golden staff in his hand and ravens were perched around his throne. Odin, the allfather.
The man narrowed his eye. "Take Loki to the prisons. I will deal with him later."
Some guards came and took the containment device from Loki. They grabbed his arms, guiding him out of the room.
Odin leaned forward on his throne. "Who is this?" He gestured to Leila.
"This is Leila, father. She helped me defeat the destroyer and capture Loki." Thor stepped forward, and Leila noticed how he placed himself slightly in front of her.
"Ah. The half-Asgardian that the warriors three reported. You have come to learn magic, yes?" Odin stroked his beard.
"Yes." Leila dipped her head.
"Show her to the guest wing," Odin gestured to the guards, who stepped towards Leila. "Thor, you stay here. We have much to discuss."
"Someone will come get you when dinner is ready." Thor said softly to Leila.
She nodded and mouthed "Thank you."
Leila followed the guards to a large suite. They left her inside and she began looking around. There was a kitchen, sitting room, private bathroom, and bedroom with a canopy bed.
All of the decor was medieval, but everything operated as if it was modern. She turned on a faucet in the kitchen and warm running water poured out.
Leila walked over to the window to look out on the breathtaking city. She could see Asgardians walking below on the cobblestone streets.
She looked down at her hand. Frigga could teach Leila about her powers, and perhaps she would be able to find her Asgardian parent.
Every part of this planet fascinated her. She thought of the worlds tree Thor had told her about. How many other planets were out there? How were they different?
As the sun set on Asgard, the orange light washed over Leila's face. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
There was a twisting pit of uncertainty in Leila's stomach, but a sense of calm settled over her. She knew things would be alright.
