Chapter 28: The Lion's Den
The limo rolled to a stop at the top of a rolling green hill, in East Hampton. The tall wrought iron gate screeched and moaned as they closed behind the vehicle. The pale dark hairs on the back of Twyla's neck stood as the strange feeling of being caged in overwhelmed her. As conversation arose amongst the group, Twyla looked out the window and stared at the formidable structure looming over them. The Delphi mansion was a timely estate with lovely trimmed rose bushes lining the porch and stone statues dotting the yard. The house itself reminded her of her home in Virginia, except the mansion was much larger and didn't have a gaping hole in the wall. However, it did possess that same colonial charm that was favored in the 1700s when the house was constructed.
It had all happened very fast- their trip to the Delphi. Twyla found it difficult to keep up with everything that was happening. One minute they were standing in an alley beside a club and the next they were promising to raise a stranger from the dead and steal from one of the most powerful family in New York. Kaitlyn Delphi was mostly the cause for their sporadic trip. Everyone had agreed that they would need to get the book somehow and someday but Twyla did not expect everything to happen in one night. The Delphi heiress had barely even thought over Alix's request before she was ushering everyone into her car and gushing about how nice it would be to have her mother again. Twyla found herself questioning the girl's competence more than once that night, as she couldn't fathom why Kaitlyn would be so willing to trust them.
When Twyla had asked Luna if the girl was being sincere, her sister nodded and hesitantly said, "She seems to be ruled by her emotions." In which, Twyla only groaned.
A pinch at her thigh jolted Twyla out of her thoughts. "Are you paying attention?" By some unfortunate string of luck, Twyla found herself sitting beside Will who was doing a fantastic job at glaring at both Twyla and Alix at the same time. Of course, he was glaring at Alix for a completely different reason though.
"Do that again and I'll cut your fingers off," Twyla smacked his hand away.
Vibrations traveled down her spine as Xavier chuckled from her other side, his arm was thrown casually over her shoulder. "That would be a no, Billyboy."
Biting the inside of her cheek, Twyla had to stop herself from reaching out and hurting that pretty face of his. She was quickly discovering that she was quite fond of that face, and later, would regret it if it were permanently damaged by her hand. She crossed her arms over her chest, and averted her eyes from Xavier's intense gaze. Alix rolled her eyes at her antics but didn't complain about having to repeat the plan. She quite liked hearing the sound of her voice.
"Kaitlyn is going to do a quick spell to change your features. Nothing drastic but enough so you and Luna won't be recognized."
Twyla understood why that was necessary but that didn't mean she liked it. Her Aunt Nyx was an illusionist and she had been a witness to many horrible instances where a face-changing face went wrong. The slightest imperfection could leave someone with cat eyes or a tail. In some rare occurrences there had also been times when the illusion never wore off and the person found that their face was forever changed. Now, Twyla didn't really care about what she looked like but she knew the teen model she called a sister, would have an objection or two.
"Again," Luna wrung her hands in and out of knots, "That's not going to be permanent, right?"
"No," said Kaitlyn but there was a slight hesitation.
Luna's eyes enlarged, her face went as pale as the white, leather interior of the car but before she could speak again, Alix interjected. "Then, Kaitlyn is going to take you guys into the mansion with you two posing as friends from college. While Kaitlyn distracts her grandfather, you two will slip away and try to find the book."
"Where will the three of you be," Twyla gestured to Alix and the two boys by her sides.
"We will be standing outside on guard and preparing the getaway car. Keep your phones on you, I'll call if I see anything."
Twyla found herself biting her tongue as she swallowed a retort. Of course, Alix would be safely removed from all danger, acting as a concerned observer. Twyla knew she had no right to be mad at her dear friend, for she had already done more for than she could ask. But, Twyla envied her. Desperately, she wished to be in her place, completely indifferent and unaffected to all the insanity that surrounded her.
Glancing swiftly, at the doe-eyed brunette in front of her, she offered her a cross between a grimace and sneer and snapped her fingers. The doors flew open and slowly, Luna and Kaitlyn crawled out of the car. The second her boot hit pavement, and the cool, crisp air berated her face. The next hour was going to be painful, regardless of getting caught. She allowed Kaitlyn to touch her face, as the girl tried to figure appropriate sizing and coloring. Her nose was wrinkled and a crease had formed in her forehead as she waved her hands over Twyla's face. A soft prickling sensation covered her face as her features morphed into something entirely new. When Kaitlyn finally released her hold of her and moved onto Luna, Twyla took a quick peek of herself through the reflection of the car mirror.
Her eyes nearly fell from their sockets as she looked in the mirror. A stranger stared back at her, with a pert upturned nose and and small curved lips smushed between two impressively sized cheeks. With that face, it was quite clear that Twyla was in fact a girl, and a very beautiful one. Her heart clenched as she reached out and grazed her hands across Kaitlyn's masterpiece. She had to feel it, in order to know that it was not simply a delusion of her mind.
Her hand fell from her face in a haste as Luna squealed beside her. She too, was staring at her reflection but her expression was none too pleased. They now looked like twins, with the same faces and bronze curls but their eyes remained different- the only clues to their real identities.
"Great," Luna pulled at the tight curl, which bounced back into perfect condition. "I'm a brunette."
She spoke with a slight quiver in her voice, as if she were going to cry. Twyla rolled her eyes and shoved her shoulder into Luna's. Luna glared at her twin before demanding once again that this were to only be temporary. Kaitlyn smirked at the young Goddess's outburst but nonetheless, promised that it would disappear in an hour.
One hour. That was all the time they had and hopefully, all the time they needed.
"Follow my lead," Kaitlyn approached the massive marble structure, with Twyla and Luna on her heels. "And remember: Get your book and I get my mother."
Twyla and Luna shared a quick look but didn't dare say another word. They bounded up the marble steps and Twyla found she had to fight the urge to run back to the car. She scolded herself for acting like a wimp, really the it shouldn't be that hard to find one book. But there was something tugging at her mind, a repressed memory, or maybe an unknown fear.
Offering the girls one last, warning glance, Kaitlyn reached out to the massive iron knocker. Her fingers barely fit around the ring but she managed to make a small thud against the door. She stepped back, her hands clapped behind her back as she waited patiently. There was a slight delay, which did nothing to help Twyla's nerves. Kaitlyn reached out one more time but before her fingers could wrap around the the knocker, the door swung open, slowly, revealing a bright, white interior.
"Why do I have the strange feeling like we're going to heaven?" Luna leaned closely to Twyla. It was clear in her tone, when she was referencing heaven, that it was not in a blissful manner. In fact, her face was void of all emotion, except for the tightening of her lips which let on to her fear.
Twyla scoffed and begrudgingly walked inside. She knew if death were truly coming for her, she would not be going to the pearly gates on a field of clouds. No, her fate would be much darker.
The Delphi mansion did appear to be a slice of heaven on earth with the pale marble floors, Greek inspired columns and white walls. But there was a feeling of emptiness that lingered through the hollow walls- it reminded Twyla of the old Covington Manor- the one she had broken into with Alix and Laurel. It felt like that had happened years ago, when it had only been weeks in reality. The only differences between the Covington Manor and the Delphi mansion was that there were no cobwebs or bugs and, of course, and there was a large, crystalline chandelier that hung from the ceiling- illuminating the room. Perhaps the room was undecorated, thought Twyla, because of the grand-staircase took up half of the space. Twyla's head whipped back to the staircase when she noticed an elderly man, with hair as white as the interior, and eyes darker than the devil's soul. He regarded the three of them with a cold eye before a large, toothy grin covered his face.
"Grandpa!" Kaitlyn flung her arms wide to greet him. "This is my grandfather- Nicolai Delphi."
**I am going to start by apologizing because you know and I know that this is shorter than usual and not edited- I'm sorry. Today is my last day before school starts and I really wanted to give you guys something to read. This is my last update on a full night of sleep for roughly the next nine months but I honestly believe my best work comes from sleep deprivation and post-anxiety attack mentality. You know, why be normal? This chapter is also shorter because next week's chapter will have another flashback which tends to make the chapters longer. Nonetheless, I hope you guys are liking how the story is advancing. I really missed writing from Twyla's point of view. Thank you so much for reading and I hope the rest of you are having longer summers than mine!
XOXO,
Ro.**
(Also, per request of my sister- since I love her- I am going to try to use my following for a good cause and promote an up and coming group. If you read my last author's note, or follow me on twitter, you know I had been watching that ABC show with my sister. The group that emerged from that show- In Real Life- has a new single out called Eyes Closed and was on the top ten for iTunes. I really recommend them for anyone who likes pop music- if not this is probably not for you. I remember what it was like on Wattpad when I first started and how hard I worked to get my stories seen and heard. The first few people who took a chance on my story and then, commented and voted really changed my life. So it's always good to take a chance on new things, you might like it or not but you'll never know unless give it a chance).
