Chapter 21: A Little Persuasion
Twyla Goodwin peered up through the cloud of smoke, her eyes narrowed into slits, hands balled into fists- all she could feel was rage. There was no accidents when it came to launching fireballs at someone's head and her Uncle was going to think twice before something like that happened again. Jumping onto her feet, she sunk into a low crouch, the tension in her body tightened like a spring. Just like a rubber band when it can no longer be stretched out, her magic snapped out of her control and attacked the man upstairs. A loud thud echoed through the room, and as the smoke cleared, Twyla could see the shoes of a man, lying on the floor.
"Xavier pick him and bring him downstairs. Hit him again if he wakes up, but not too hard, we need his working mind."
Mumbling, "Wicked," under his breath, Xavier's body turned into a blur as he whizzed up the stairs and brought their Uncle downstairs.
"Are you sure that's him?" Will came out from his hiding spot behind the coach, "He doesn't look anything like you guys."
Pinching his chin between her fingers, Twyla turned his head from side to side as she inspected every wrinkle and freckle on his face. "Oh it's him alright. He's my Aunt Nyx's twin, they were both skilled in illusions. They could make anything look like something it wasn't, including themselves. I guess when he wanted to cut ties us, he took the severe approach."
Luna shifted closer, to get a better look. Whereas before, Uncle Leo had short black hair slicked back and a rather symmetrical looking face with two sapphires for eyes, his new face was much more attractive. The black hair was faded to a dark brown, and a goatee stretched across his chiseled face- there was a slight tan to his skin which was something all Goodwin's lacked, and his build was more muscular than Luna had remembered as a child. There were still pieces of him Luna could see through the surface and she was sure if he were to open his eyes they would still be the same Sapphire color of her mother and her grandfather.
"Drag him into the living room, don't let go of his wrists," Twyla ordered Xavier.
"Sure thing boss lady," Xavier bit back a smile and walked the girls' unconscious uncle over to the couch. He did not lay him out on the sofa, instead remained standing, and waiting for Twyla's next order.
Will hung back by the door, not wanting to be completely immersed in the family drama and not wanting to leave Luna at the same time. By watching Twyla, he could tell she was moments away from snapping, her chest was heaving and knuckles whitening as she refrained from punching a hole in the wall. Though he wouldn't admit it out loud, Will was more afraid of her than he was of their crazy, flame-throwing uncle. At least, the crazy uncle gave them a chance to leave, which Will was all for, but Twyla was not going to spare this guy. He could see it in her cold, silver eyes, she wanted only two things- answers and blood. By some miracle, Luna was still holding her wits together. Well- that was a stretch- she was freaking out on the inside and reviewing each law that they had managed to break in the span of five minutes but on the outside her face remained stoic, and a little somber.
"Luna?" Twyla caught her sister off guard, "You know how in movies they wake someone up by slapping them, do you think that works in real life?"
"How am I supposed to know? I've never taken part of a kidnapping and interrogation."
After saying it out loud, Luna realized just how bad this whole thing was and even entertained the idea of telling Twyla to stop but that was until she saw Twyla stalk towards their uncle, like a jungle cat preparing to pounce on its prey. She didn't lunge herself at him, but she did reel her arm back and smack him with the back of her hand. The sickening crack of skin against skin grated against Luna's ears. She could see her sister's hand print forming on their uncle's cheek, as a groan filtered out of his mouth. He blinked once, then a second time and shook his head. Looking around his living room, he carefully avoided looking at Twyla until she appeared inches away from his face.
"Boo."
He flinched and then said, "What do you want from me?"
"What, no hello? No, how have you been? Maybe even why are you here? You just automatically assume I want something from you," Twyla let her traditional cruel smirk sit on her face as she casually spoke to the man she was just itching to tear to pieces.
Luna couldn't understand why, but Twyla seemed to get off of situations like this where she held all the power and the captive was forced to shrivel in fear. Maybe it was due to the fact they watched too many Disney movies as kids, and thought the bad guys always needed to put on some showstopper before killing the hero.
"Well you're here alone, without your mother, grandmother or aunt which leads me to believe something happened to them. They wouldn't let you come otherwise."
Leo glanced up at the massive vampire looming over him and cursed Celeste out in his mind. He wasn't fond of anyone in his family, they could rot in hell for all he cared but he especially despised Celeste. When they were younger the two of them were quite close; Leo always felt bad since Celeste was always the butt end of a joke in the supernatural community since she was practically powerless. The two of them weren't fond of the magical world, Celeste had very obvious reasons but Leo, he wanted to leave because he fell in love. The girl was mortal and though there was no rule against marrying a mortal, it wasn't exactly something looked at in a favorable light and he had no desire to lie to her for their entire life. So, he cut ties with every supernatural person he knew, stopped showing up to coven meetings and even stopped practicing magic, though his powers were still there. The only person he remained in contact with was Celeste, since she too planned to marry a mortal as well. It wasn't until her children were born did their relationship begin to disintegrate. When it was clear just who her daughters were, Leo gave his sister two options set them up for adoption or never speak to him again. It was clear, she picked the latter and now, he would have to deal with the consequences.
"Smart. Very smart," Twyla pulled away and said, "You're right, they probably wouldn't let us come here and if it weren't for the fact that we're dealing with a life or death situation, we wouldn't be here at all."
"I don't care what you're dealing with. My mother and sisters made their choices and are now suffering because of them, I won't make the same mistakes."
"Wrong answer. You see you're going to help us regardless of whether want to or not, or I'm going to find out who this little girl is," Twyla picked up a small picture frame and flipped it around to show Leo.
Leo's body went rigid as he stared at the girl in the picture. Luna took a precautionary step back as she felt her Uncle's rage boiling to the surface. The veins in his neck began to bulge as his face turned red, he tried to shake free of Xavier and attack Twyla but Xavier remained an unbreakable force- he was like brick wall. A slew of expletives fell from Leo's mouth, causing Will to cringe at the sheer vulgarity of the older man, whereas Twyla stood in front of him, her body slack and her smirk did not budge. She already had an idea who the young child was since she bore a rough resemblance to Leo. The second she saw the picture when they first entered the house, she knew it would be the perfect bargaining chip. As sick as it was, she knew she would have to throw out a few empty threats to get what she wanted and she had no qualms about that. After all, it wasn't as if Twyla actually had any intentions to hurt the kid.
"Luna?" Not taking her eyes off of Leo for even a second, she handed Luna the picture and said, "Can you take a look in his mind and find out who she is?"
"Twyla I don't know if I can do this. This is a bit too much." Her response was a chilling glare.
Instead of furthering her objections, Luna decided it was best for her safety to just do as her crazy twin requested. It's for mom, she reminded herself. Taking a deep breath, she held onto the picture tightly while staring deeply into her Uncle's eyes. After realizing what she was trying to do, Leo closed his eyes and shook his head, he tried to force her out of his mind but his control was not what it used to be.
"Astrid Elroy," Luna gasped, "She's his daughter."
"That's what I thought. And Astrid is not a normal name, I'm sure it wouldn't take us very long to find her..."
"What do you want?" Leo growled, his shoulders were slumped in defeat.
A wicked gleam flashed in Twyla's eyes, she opened her mouth to make a sarcastic comment but Luna spoke first, not allowing her sister to continue with the charade. "Our family- your family- was taken by them. We don't know who they are or why they took our family but they won't give them back until we find a book and we have no idea where to find this book."
"They are what's known as the Delphi, a cult of witches and warlocks whose entire lives are dedicated to killing the Celestial Sisters. There's a chance they could want my mother's spell book but I doubt it. If they took her, chances are she had her spell book on her at the time- she never goes anywhere without it. The only other book that I can think of, that they could possibly want, is the Book of Moons, which is the Celestial Sisters personal spellbook."
"Celestial Sisters?" Twyla remembered the tapestry she had found in her basement, the one of the girls who looked strikingly similar to Luna and herself. "Isn't that another name for the moon goddesses? Why would they come after us?"
"Don't you see Twyla," Luna voice constricted with tears as the answer appeared her Uncle's mind. "Mom lied, we're not just twins blessed by the moon goddesses. We are the moon goddesses."
**That really should not have been a surprise to anyone at this point lol. But at least we finally know who the ominous they are and the book that the girls are looking for. In the next chapter, Twyla and Luna try to come to term with their knew identities and discover where the book is located. We will also see our very first glimpse- since the beginning of the book of- Alix.
